Geostatistical analysis, resource estimation and three-dimensional modelling of the gold grade distribution was undertaken using exploration drillhole data taken from the Mt Leyshon gold mine. The main aims of the project were to provide an independent estimate of the primary gold resource and to improve the estimate by better understanding the statistical distribution of gold and the establishment of more robust variograms. These criteria have been achieved by the removal of low grade sub-populations, increased sample size and access to data from the most recent drilling program. The outcome of this statistical study has led to a lowering of the sill and nugget variance of the variograms used. Distinct geometric anisotropy was identified in all the resource estimation zones and was used to model gold grade distribution.Two independent resource estimates were established from the primary gold resource, one based on a geostatistical estimator (kriging) and the other on a traditional estimator (inverse distance weighting). Both methods were compared with a contemporary kriged estimate by Mt Leyshon Gold Mines Ltd.

A lead-zinc flotation tailings sample containing silver from BHP Billiton’s Cannington Mine has been characterised to understand occurrences of silver in the tailings by conventional elemental, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and size analyses followed by mineralogical analysis with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with mineral liberation analysis (MLA) software and the use of an adapted diagnostic leach process originally developed for gold containing materials.The tailings sample contained 67 g/t Ag, 1.8 per cent Pb and 0.52 per cent Zn. The XRD analysis showed that the sample consisted of 74 per cent silicates, nine per cent sulfides, 11 per cent magnetite and small amounts of other minerals such as fluorite, fluorapatite and rutile. The p80 and p50 of the sample were determined to be 106 µm and 38 µm, respectively. The silver distribution was high in the small size fraction with 52.1 per cent of the silver being in the -8 µm fraction. The silver minerals freibergite, acanthite, jamesonite, pyrargyrite and native silver were observed in the mineralogical analysis of the sample by SEM/MLA. The associations of the minerals were intricate and the occurrences of silver were complex. There were finely disseminated silver minerals and also coarser grains of silver minerals in composites with the host minerals. It was estimated that almost 50 per cent of the silver was contained in pyrargyrite, around 14 per cent as native silver and contained in acanthite, 12.5 per cent in galena and around ten per cent in freibergite and jamesonite.These composite particles and the type of the silver minerals present were expected to limit leaching efficiencies of the silver in hydrometallurgical processing. The diagnostic leach tests showed that around 50 per cent of the silver could be recovered by direct cyanidation and higher extractions could be achieved by more aggressive acidic systems.Cyanidation tests were conducted to confirm the findings of the diagnostic leach studies. The investigated cyanidation parameters were time (up to 48 hours), solid to liquid ratio (1:1 and 1:2), cyanide concentration (0.025 M, 0.5 M and 0.1 M) and particle size (p80 of 106 µm, 63 µm and 7.5 µm). The effects of oxygen and lead nitrate were also studied. The tests were conducted at atmospheric temperatures. The maximum silver recovery obtained was about 50 per cent for all the parameter ranges trialled except particle size. The decrease in particle size from 106 µm to 7.5 µm by fine grinding resulted in an increase in silver recoveries from 50 per cent up to approximately 82 per cent indicating that the liberation of the silver grains/minerals is one of the factors affecting the cyanidation recovery of silver in addition to the presence of refractory silver minerals not amenable to cyanidation.Low head grades of silver in the tailings and relatively low cyanidation recoveries of silver (without fine grinding) necessitate a thorough cost analysis for the cyanidation of the Cannington lead and zinc tailings to assess if cyanidation would be a suitable process option for the extraction of silver. The smelting, refining and hydrometallurgical operations practised in the winning of non-ferrous metals are associated with severe aqueous and high temperature corrosion problems.With the increasing costs of maintenenace and the utilization of computerization to control the processes, the trend in recent years has been to spend more capital on improved and proprietory grades of engineering materials, which offer greater reliability and more cost effective plant performance.The problems which have plagued stainless steel users for many years are the alloys' poor performance in chloride or other halide media where pitting, crevice or chloride induced stress corrosion cracking may occur, have been essentially solved by the new proprietory grades. The controlled additions of minor alloying elements including rare earth metals have led to the development of stainless steels with high mechanical strengths, improved corrosion resistance, and high temperature corrosion resistance and structural stability.

The combination of shot-firing and stage loader, and a prop and bar support system is an accepted drivage method. The support configuration is based on the final prop density, and assumes relitively uniform load sharing between the props. During the development of a longwall faceline at a medium depth (approximately 600m) British coal mine using such a drivage method, a fall occured overnight, effectively closing approximately 40m of the drivage. The severity and speed of the fall prompted an investigation into the performance of the temporary support system installed prior to chock installation. This paper deals with the investigation which disclosed some major contributory factors towards loss of strata control.

Relocation into the Lichtenberg open pit mine of about 110 million m3 of sulfide-bearing and ARD-generating waste rock piled up on the surface is the most important and cost-intensive single surface restoration project conducted by WISMUT GmbH at the former Ronneburg uranium mining site. The waste rock comprises for the most part Palaeozoic shales, limestones and diabases with pyrite contents of up to seven per cent. Waste pile relocation began in 1992 and is scheduled to be completed by 2007. The approach used for relocation has been extensively described elsewhere (Jakubick et al, 1997; Hockley et al, 1997; Chapman et al, 1998; Paul, 2003). Following completion of the backfill that will be up to 60 m above the initial ground level, a dry cover will be placed on top of the backfilled mine wastes. The area to be covered amounts to about 220 ha. Design planning for the final cover placement of which is to begin in 2004 had to be based on a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis over and above compliance with legal requirements. The crucial question to be answered in this respect was to determine û in addition to the expenditure required to ensure reuse, radiation protection and soil protection û the extent to which additional time, effort and money were justified in order to minimise contaminant release from the unsaturated portion of the backfilled pit contributing to total releases into the ground water and possibly achieve savings in long-term operating costs for the on-site water treatment plant. Optimisation was based on contaminant balance modelling for the entire site reproducing dominant physical and geochemical processes. Among the specifics underlying the cover design is that contaminant release from the backfilled open pit must not be considered independently of that from the adjacent flooded underground mine and that a major part of the backfilled open pit will also be submerged. Following weighing of cover-related short- and long-term costs it was found that higher construction costs for the various cover options will not be offset by cost savings in the long-term water treatment. As a consequence of pit flooding, even a costly multiple cover including an impermeable layer will only insignificantly impact on concentrations and loads at ground water spill over points. As a result of comprehensive studies and investigations, a combined cover of cohesive soil material from on-site excavation overlain by a 0.4 m thick storage layer to restore natural soil functions for revegetation was derived and submitted for approval. Together with hydraulic measures, this approach is to meet any requirement in terms of radiology, water protection, stability, erosion protection, and reuse.

The Ok Tedi Project has been planned as a selective mining operation since the Feasibility Study. The nature of the orebody, and the need to 'stage' the infrastructure buildup meant that initially the mill would process gol ore using a leach-CIP process, followed by parallel leaching of gold ore and flotation of copper ore, and finally all flotation of copper ore. Cutoff grades were applied to gold and copper ore of 1.0-1.3 g/t Au and 0.4-0.3% Tot. Cu. Since startup, unpredicted occurrences of sulphide copper and, to a Lesser extent, carbonaceous material, has necessitated significant additional short term drilling (other than at grade boundaries), and shift grade control in the pit to control contaminant levels. Remodelling of the orebody based on the most up to date variography and geological interpretation has had a significant impact on the reserves, and thus the whole project development strategy; necessitating the earlier processing of copper ores, and preflotation of the gold ore.This paper discusses some of these points in detail, and in particular highlights how unforseen geological occurrences coupled with processing restrictions can have significant impacts on ore reserves and the mine development schedule.

Laminar flow furnace techniques and thermal analysis were used to study the combustion of Kambalda nickel concentrate and Collie coal. The study was made to ascertain the suitability of the latter as a replacement for the fuel oil currently burnt in a flash furnace at the Kal- goorlie Nickel Smelter. The coal was found to ignite at temperatures between 500-600¦C which was the same as that required for the most reac- tive component of the concentrate, namely py- rite. The rates of reaction of both the coal and concentrate were dependent on oxygen con- centration. Sulfur dioxide hindered the combus- tion of concentrate and of coal, the effect on the concentrate being the more pronounced. The effects of moisture content and the tendency for spontaneous combustion of the coal were also noted.

Man has always been and will always be part of his environment, in ,a good, bad or indifferent manner. Until quite recently, this environment has been the atmospheric boundary layer above the land masses, and to a limited extent the air-sea interface of the oceans. Since the days when he lived in caves, he has built up a wealth of observations on these two environments,-with ever-increasing scientific precision which unfortunately until quite recently was completely insufficient for modern capabilities of data analysis. Consequently, in a sense, he has left in his wake thousands of years of missed, opportunities for making exact observations and increasing his understanding. The data of the past are lost and he has to be satisfied with what he can assemble from now on when his environ- ment, largely as a result of his actions, is exhibiting more and more rapid variations in time; in other words, time series of observations of phenomena are required, the length of which is critical for most purposes of analysis.

The Kanmantoo copper mine is located in the Adelaide Hills area of South Australia and is owned and operated by Hillgrove Resources (HGO). The mine is a drill and blast, truck and shovel operation mining sulfide (chalcopyrite) ore located in chloritised andalusite biotite schist. The initial Kanmantoo open pit operation occurred in the 1970s, before falling copper prices closed the mine. In 2010 the mine was reopened by HGO and the Kavanagh cutback of the Kanmantoo pit was undertaken. The Spitfire, Nugent and Emily Star satellite pits were also mined through to 2015 before the latest steep wall Giant pit design was developed to take mining out to 2019.There are no major fault structures and only two significant shear zone structures exposed in the open pit walls. The main Garnet Andalusite Biotite Schist (GABS) unit is quite competent so the pit designs have therefore mainly been controlled by four distinct joint sets. This paper is a case study on the influence of the joint regime on the wall stability of the main GABS unit and how a better understanding of the joint regime and the use of rock reinforcement has allowed the steep wall design to be adopted.The paper also describes the remote geotechnical mapping and slope monitoring techniques used to manage the rockfall risks associated with the steep walled slope design.CITATION:Hutchison, B J, Chambers, J, Gannon, S and Oko-oboh, D, 2017. The Geita Gold Mine is located 80 km southwest of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania and is 100 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Limited. Open pit mining commenced at Geita in 2000. In 2011, the operation produced 494 000 oz at a cash cost of US$536/oz. This is a significant improvement from 2008, when 264 000 oz were produced at a cash cost of US$742/oz.A period of relatively poor operating performance at Geita was recorded over the period from 2006 to 2009. A period known at Geita as æthe turnaroundÆ commenced in 2009, and has been remarkable to say the least. Over the last couple of years the mine has embarked on a journey, which saw various interventions and initiatives. Among the key initiatives were Project ONE (which focuses on business process framework, systems for people and safety transformation), asset integrity, fatigue management and contract mining of satellite pits.Since the commencement of the turnaround at Geita, gold production has matched market guidance. The mine has returned to positive cash flow on the basis of strong performance on cash management, improved production and increased gold price.This paper explains some of the details of the mine operationsÆ improvements, how they were implemented, their relative contributions to improved mining performance and the path ahead to best practice. N Longhole Open Stope at The Zinc Corporation Mine was developed in an area with large and continuous tension cracks. These cracks resulted fran widespread block subsidence into previously mined areas. The practical problems encountered and their solutions are discussed together with an outline of a new method of stope wall support using large diameter dowels installed sub-parallel to the stope wall.

The design of mine openings and the assessment of their reserve are processes ihicl, require the routine manipulation of considerable amounts of data. A number of computer programs have been assembled to operate in a mini computer in order to provide some mechanical assistance for these processes. The system responds to plain language commands. which allows mining engineers to compute the reserves for a number of possible mining outlines, on an interactive basis. Methods of numerical analysis were used in preference to statistical or qeostatistical techniques.

Current low prices for many metals mean that deposits have to be mined at high cut-offs (relative to their mean grade), which means that only a small percentage of mining blocks are above cut-off. Worse, at such high cut-offs, the blocks above cut-off are usually not grouped into convenient clumps for mining; they tend to be split into small isolated patches that are difficult to reach and hence expensive to extract. Companies wishing to acquire mineral properties have to be able to work out quickly what percentage of blocks are above cut-off and what can effectively be mined given the mining method envisaged. Moreover they need this information within a relatively short-time. The work presented here relates to typical South African gold mines (ie tabular orebodies) but the long-term objective is to develop tools for quantifying the impact of reserve breakup at high cut-offs for a wide range of underground mines including those that are not tabular. The mining method and the sampling procedure determine whether ore blocks can effectively be located and extracted economically. This project studied the impact of these two factors on the recoverable reserves for Witwatersrand gold mines. In order to be repeatable, the tests were done on numerical models of the deposit obtained by geostatistical simulations. To ensure realism, the orebody model and the mining scenarios were based on a specific mine. The recoverable reserves (ore tonnage above cut-off, the corresponding metal quantity and the average grade) were calculated for a wide range of cut-offs for four mining scenarios, as well as for the base case of free selection: ò Scenario 1: Blocks are taken if their true grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline (no information effect, no marginal blocks). ò Scenario 2: In addition to the accessible pay blocks, adjoining marginal blocks are taken (no information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Scenario 3: Blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline. Here the estimator is the average of the face samples (information effect, no marginal blocks): ò Scenario 4: Accessible pay blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off. Adjoining marginal blocksare also taken (information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Free selection: All blocks whose true grade is above cut-off are taken irrespective of their accessibility. A steady state heat and mass balance simulation of the Western Mining Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter (KNS) flowsheet was developed within the framework of the commercial software METSIM. Monolithic packing systems have gained in popularity as a gate side packing method. However, there has been no detailed investigation to assess their underground strength behaviour. This work includes the laboratory and in situ investigation for strength behaviour determined on various monolithic packing materials namely Tekpak-XX, Hydropak-20, Hydropak-30, Astrapak-3R, Flashpak, Thyssen pack and Aquablends. A simple technique for assessing the pack strength was developed at the laboratory by using a penetrometer, of which penetration resistance can be directly correlated with the uniaxial strength of the pack. The in situ strength investigations were made on core samples obtained from three pipes inserted inside the pack, while the penetration test were made on the pack surface. The in situ results indicated that the packing material develops an inconsistent strength on various part of the pack which was mainly related to an inadequate mixing of grouts inside the pack.

Independence Group’s Jaguar Mine treats a polymetallic ore producing a copper concentrate and zinc concentrate. Effective separation of the sulfides requires relatively fine grinding with flotation feed P80 of about 75µm. Zn losses to final tails are greater than 60 per cent and <32 µm. When magnetic conditioning was first installed in 2010 it showed about an 8 per cent reduction of zinc in final tail and on some ores a similar benefit for silver as well. Current testwork is showing about a 12 per cent reduction in zinc and silver in final tail, consistent with the original testwork. Sizing of the final tail during the tests showed that the reduction of zinc and silver losses were only in the <32 µm fraction, as would be expected from an aggregation process. However, the most surprising result was about a 4 per cent reduction in zinc and silver in the plant feed with a >99 per cent statistical certainty. The reduction in zinc and silver in the feed is also only in the <32 µm fraction. Therefore, because the magnetic conditioning of Zn flotation feed cannot impact plant ore feed grade the hypothesis is that the magnetic conditioning is reducing the fine mineral from downstream processes, like filtering and thickening, returning to the plant feed in the recycled process water. This hypothesis is consistent with plant observation of dirty concentrate thickener overflow and measurements of solids in the overflow, as well as the average % Zn grade in cyclone overflow that correlates with the magnetic conditioning ON and OFF days. The introduction of new technology into thegold-mining industry has been encouraged in recent years by increases in the price of gold andthe necessity for costs to be contained.At most new gold mines, run-of-mine millingis preferred over crushing and multistage milling, and this change at the head of the circuit leaves no place for the manual sorting of ore and for gravity concentration in the mill circuit.Flotation continues to hold its place in goldrecovery. However, a decline in the demand forsulphuric acid may limit the amount of pyrite thatcan be roasted before cyanidation.

Roof bolting with resin bonded bolts has been developed extensively in French coal mines. There are three aspects of this development: 1. The reason for and the care used in the development of roof bolting from use as a reinforcement in a classical arched roadway to use as the only support in roadways in ad- vance of the working face (the roadway being reinforced behind the face); 2. The problems encountered and studied, such as choice of boltable roadways and determination of the technical data in designing a roof bolting pattern; 3. Only because roof bolting has been controlled by safety rules, and especially by accurate measurement of strata behaviour, has this system of support been expanded aapidly in France since 1967.
