Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy at surfaces under electrochemical control has been applied to elucidate the adsorption of thiol collectors. SERS spectroelectrochemical studies at coinage metal electrodes have been carried out on ethyl xanthate and three iso-xanthates, O-isopropyl-N-ethylthionocarbamate, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, diisobutyl- dithiophosphinate and butylethoxycarbonylthioura. For each collector, adsorption occurs via charge transfer to form a metal-sulfur bond and, in situations for which the reversible potential of the formation of the bulk phase is known, at underpotentials.

Earlypractice was to adapt equipment from other fields, but with changing emphasis, research anddevelopment by the coal industry has created specifi c equipment, technology and practices toaccurately place in-seam boreholes to provide efficient and effective gas drainage."

The New Southern Railway (NSR) involves the excavation of approximately 10 km of single bore tunnel from Tempe Reserve, Tempe, to Prince Alfred Park (PAP). PAP is located just south of Central Railway Station in SydneyÆs Central Business District (CBD). From Tempe Reserve the alignment takes the tunnel under Sydney Airport including the main north/south runway. Sydney Airport is approximately 8 km south of the CBD. The NSR is being constructed by a private group, the Transfield Bouygues Joint Venture (TBJV). Transfield is a major Australian contractor and the French contractor, Bouygues, is providing the soft ground tunnel construction expertise and is also responsible for the design of the concrete segmental lining. This paper sets out to present in some detail the issues involved in tunnelling under the airport and in particular under the north apron, the main north/south runway and the new elevated roadway. The paper concentrates on these three areas on the airport with an emphasis on the following. The risks involved and measures taken to minimise the risks in tunnelling under the International Terminal north apron (with Jumbo Jets parked immediately above). Secondly, settlement predictions, settlement and runway operation criteria and the actual settlements that have occurred on the main north/south runway. Finally, the criteria that was developed during the construction of the deep bored piers for the elevated roadway at the Domestic Terminal as the TBM passed through this area of construction activity.

The Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (A.C.I.R.L.) MINVENT computer program can be used to simulate existing and projected colliery ventilation requirements. New collieries can be planned using a database of ventilation parameters which were ascertain- ed by A.C.I.R.L. surveys at selected collieries in N.S.W. and Queensland. Several techniques are used in both the formulation of the database and in the evaluat- ion of a ventilation system, prior to analysis by the MINVENT program. The analysis of a ventilation system requires the measurement of air quantities, pressures and hence airway resistances. All resistances are calculated at standard air density of 1.205 kg/m3. Air densities are derived from barometric pressure and wet and dry bulb temperature readings. Airway frictional and shock losses, leakage through stoppings and overcasts, flow of air through regulators, face resistance and resistance of anomalous ventilation features are related to the typical Australian measured data presented.

Mount Isa Mines' Hilton Mine was brought into large-scale production in 1990/91 at a time of sharply falling metal prices. To ensure the operation's survival and eventual prosperity there was an urgent need to reduce operating costs and increase revenue. A target of a 40 per cent increase in productivity over five years was set. Strategies to obtain the required improvements were developed on the basis of greater involvement and increased contribution from the workforce, major changes to the mining methods and the development and application of new technology. This paper describes the organisational, operational and technological changes that have been implemented at Hilton and presents the results achieved to-date.

Western AustraliaÆs Mining Act 1978 was amended in 2010 to provide for the requirement of a mine closure plan to be submitted to the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) for approval, as part of a mining proposal application. The mine closure plan must be prepared in accordance with approved guidelines. Guidelines for mine closure plans were developed to assist the mining industry in Western Australia to plan and implement effective closure of mines. The guidelines focus on the application of integrated mine closure principles and industry best practice information on mine closure. This, includes stakeholder consultation, risk based approach, data collection and monitoring, development of completion criteria and financial provision.Due to the potential high level of public interest in the guidelines, extensive consultation with stakeholders was conducted. The elements of consistent structural de sign models for underground structures are explained. Such models should comprise at least ground properties, excavation and support methods, computational models for analysis, failure hypotheses, and in-situ monitoring. The fundamental characteristics of the interaction between ground and support are investigated. Then, plane strain models for soft ground tun- nelling and design models for rock tunnelling employing stress release at the tunnel face are elaborated. Some numerical evaluations are gi- ven in diagrams, comparing approaches of dif- ferent authors. Comments are presented on nume- rical three-dimensional models (visualized by structural models for mining in rock salt), on the interaction of in-situ monitoring and design, on structural safety for underground structures, and finally on the general develop- ment of structural design models in geo- Techniques.

On-line analysis systems have found widespread application in the metalliferous mineral and coal industries. The continuous analysis and rapid response of these systems has led to improved control of mining, processing and blending operations, with increased recovery of valuable minerals and coal combustibles.The paper reviews developments in on-line analysis by CSIRO and Mineral Control Instrumentation Ltd which led to the award of the Australia Prize 1992. These commercialised systems analyse mineral and coal slurries; determine the ash and moisture contents of coal on conveyors, and the moisture content of coke on conveyors; and determine the carbon content of fly ash. These gauges are estimated to have resulted in productivity increases valued at $50 million per year to Australia.

In the 1989 best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author, Stephen Covey, highlights the importance of maintaining not only ‘production’, but also, ‘production capacity’. When operating a modern flotation concentrator, production is often measured in terms of concentrate tonnage, tonnes milled and plant utilisation. There are very few metrics that focus directly on flotation equipment condition in relation to performance, which is analogous to Covey’s production capacity principal. It is evident on many mine sites that flotation equipment condition is not monitored on a proactive basis and that the prevailing culture is to wait for a failure, before addressing an issue.This paper discusses examples of how poor equipment condition can lead to production loss through poor metallurgical performance. Actual examples are given where these problems have occurred in operating plants. The moisture content of iron ore is important in handling, stockpiling, transport and further processing operations. Typically these ores contain both `free' and `bound' moisture, the latter being moisture that is not removed in a conventional laboratory determination of moisture by air drying at 105¦C, and it is the free moisture that is important in dust control and ore handling. The CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering has previously developed and commercialised gauges, based on capacitance and microwave techniques, for the on-belt determination of moisture in coal and minerals. However, these gauges determine total moisture, and have a different sensitivity to free and bound moisture in the material analysed. Consequently, the accuracy of determining total or free moisture alone may be significantly affected by variations in the bound moisture content. In the non-codified realm of tunnel design there are issues which are sure-fire instigators of controversy. This paper presents a discussion regarding one particular issue which in the authors’ experience often results in comment and debate. This issue only forms part of the rock load assessment process, but it is specifically addressed with the intention of presenting a rational basis for design, which may result in broader acceptance within the tunnel design community.The issue considered relates to the characterisation of in situ rock stresses for the design of tunnel support in the Sydney Basin. A summary is given of the literature on the topic, with emphasis on the main sources of uncertainty and contention. A design approach is proposed, with particular focus given to the numerical modelling of in situ ground stresses and the approach used to ensure that the adopted stress regime is consistent with the assumed ground model. "Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. The Windarra nickel deposits known to date comprise two sulphide orebodies located at Mount Windarra and South Windarra. These orebodies, which are 15 km apart, lie within an ultramafic complex at or near its footwall contact with a banded iron formation. The Windarra deposits are 270 km north-northeast of Kalgoorlie in West- ern Australia which was the centre of a major nickel exploration programme fol- lowing the discovery of nickel deposits at Kambalda in 1966. Surface indications of the Mount Windarra orebody were discovered in 1969 by Mr. Ken Shirley while prospect- ing the Laverton area for Poseidon Ltd. (then NL). The mineralisation was loc- ated by systematic prospecting for goss- anous material associated with aero-mag- netic anomalies and ultramafic rocks. The South Windarra deposit was dis- covered in 1971 by the Union-Hanna- Homestake Joint Venture, by exploring along the strike extension of the mount Windarra ultramafic-banded iron format- ion contact. A limitation to present theoretical roof reinforcement design methods is the inability to derive accurate and quantitative information about the roof rock condition and the action of reinforcement at various excavation stages. To obtain the information required to assess roof rock stability, detailed monitoring of the in-situ behaviour of reinforcement and roof strata is required. Reliable instru- mentation and techniques have been developed for use in underground coal mines to identify the geometry and magnitude of displacements occurring in roof rock and the forces generated in reinforcement. The use of such instrumentation allows an accurate assessment of the in-situ capability of reinforcement and the mode of reinforcing action developed. In-situ monitoring can supply data required for the practical design of reinforce- ment and assess the potential stability of current designs. The use of such data together with mine wide appraisal of rock and stressfield considerations, can allow roof reinforcement to be designed on the basis of a predicted roof Response.

Outbursts have occurred irregularly in the Collinsville Coal field since 1954 when an incident claimed seven lives. Further significant outbursts occurred in 1960, 1961, 1972 and more recently in the No. 2 mine in 1978. From the information collected over 25 years a comprehensive program to minimize the hazard of outbursts has evolved. Further developments of techniques to combat outbursts are being developed.

Simulations of complex physical phenomena, such as hurricanes and fluid flow around space vehicles, can now be effectively explored using modem visualisation techniques which have been developed to examine the results of numerical modelling using supercomputers. These techniques are also being applied extensively in medical investigations, including viewing the interior of the human brain. We have now applied these same techniques to the visualisation of gold deposits.Grade control in open pit gold mining operations may involve the collection of at least half a million samples in each mine. Extensive drilling programs also accompany the early reserve evaluation stages and exploration in advance of mining. Maximum utilisation of these very large amounts of information requires an ability to integrate, examine and present large three-dimensional data sets in order to be able to derive and effectively communicate information on grade distribution and geological controls.

Minor magnetic anomalies which may be un represented on a magnetic contour map can be extracted from the original survey data and plotted by the described method to provide a rapid interpretation of the magnetic survey, provided that the data has been recorded digi- tally on magnetic tape. This paper presents an overview of a technology package developed by BHP for locating discontinuities in coal seams using an in-seam seismic (ISS) exploration technique. The technology package includes instrumentation, data processing software, field procedures, numerical modelling and interpretation know-how. The technology developed has proved to be highly successful; features such as faults and dykes, not detected by other methods, have been delineated. Using equipment specifically designed for underground use, surveys are carried out quickly and at low cost. More than 30 ISS surveys have been conducted by BHP in Australia. Substantial savings in production revenue have been realised in situations where ISS has identified mining conditions which would have impeded longwall operations. Case studies of several ISS surveys are described in the Paper.
