Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980's :1) hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2) "Red Sea" type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3) ferromanganese nodules; 4) concentrations of metallic sulphides ("Black Smokers"); and 5) cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts. Since then, the so called "White Smokers", containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. These horizons have not only a theoretical, but also a principal economic significance

The selectivity in flotation columns involving the separation of particles of varying degrees of floatability is based on differential flotation rates in the collection zone, reflux action between the froth and collection zones, and differential detachment rates in the froth zone. Using well known theoretical models describing the separation process and experimental data, froth zone and overall flotation recovery values were quantified for particles in an anthracite coal that have a wide range of floatability potential. For highly floatable particles, froth recovery had a very minimal impact on overall recovery while the recovery of weakly floatable material was decreased substantially by reductions in froth recovery values. In addition, under carrying-capacity limiting conditions, selectivity was enhanced by the preferential detachment of the weakly floatable material. Based on this concept, highly floatable material was added directly into the froth zone when treating the anthracite coal. The enriched froth phase reduced the product ash content of the anthracite product by five absolute percentage points while maintaining a constant recovery value.

The Albany Conglomerate is a widespread geological unit found in northern areas of Auckland, New Zealand. It has previously been described as part of the early Miocene Waitemata Group which underlies most of Auckland. Much of the Waitemata Group comprises weak interbedded sandstones and mudstones, but also includes conspicuous conglomeratic units such as the Albany Conglomerate. The Albany Conglomerate comprises a well-cemented mixture of hard pebbles, cobbles and boulders of igneous and metamorphic derivation in lenticular beds. A number of tunnelling projects are planned for the near future in Auckland. Recent experience has shown that the variable features associated with the Albany Conglomerate can make selecting appropriate construction methods very challenging. This paper explores the engineering geological and sedimentological features of the Albany Conglomerate with respect to other conglomerates within the Waitemata Group and the potential implications on tunnelling projects in Auckland. The oil crisis had repercussions throughout the world and most importantly on mining, where the drive to reduce the use of liquid fossil fuel led directly to the appearance and subsequent growth in the design of mobile crushers in late 1970s early 1980s, which heralded a new era in both quarrying and mining. Even though mobile crushing has now become common, even preferred in the quarrying industry, this has not been the case in mining. This paper looks at why, in spite of the initial optimism, this technology has yet to gain full acceptance in the mining industry. The paper examines some of the problems that have been encountered in the past and offers suggestions as to how they can be avoided by applying the appropriate technology. It then takes a look at the successful application of the semi-mobile in-pit crushing system used by Italian Thai Development Company (ITD), on the Mae Moh Phase 5 contract and examines how the techniques used successfully there could be applied to the industry at large.

The Tom, East and West zone, stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag deposits at Macmillan Pass, Yukon, Canada were discovered by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co Ltd prospectors in 1951. Further exploration, including two phases of underground exploration produced an HBM&S calculated reserve of 9.28 Mt of 7.5 per cent Pb, 6.2 per cent Zn and 69.4 g/T Ag for these zones. Cominco Ltd optioned the property in 1988. Deep, surface drilling extended the West and Southeast zones downward 200 - 300 m, indicating an additional potential resource of several million tonnes of good grade. The magnitude of the controlling syndepositional setting suggests that mineralisation continues to greater depth but with increased drilling and possibly mining costs. The 30 x 60 km Macmillan Fold belt trends WNW across the NW Selwyn Basin and Cordilleran trend. Within the fold belt, the Central Block - a complex, rift controlled basin of Devonian siliciclastics, hosts seven zones of Pb-Zn-Ag mineralisation clustered about four hydrothermal centres. The centres, distributed over 24 km, are coincident with small syndepositionally active structural sub-basins. The Tom deposits, in one such sub-basin, are localised by a third order structure consisting of two palaeobathymetric troughs flanking a syndepositional horst. This structure caused drastic facies and thickness changes over 600 metres of strata and focussed the venting of hydrothermal fluids through permeable conglomerates in the horst and its flanking growth faults. Mineral facies are zoned, with Pb-Ag contents rapidly diminishing outward from the vent resulting in restricted areas of high grade Pb-Zn-Ag-Ba ore within more extensive, sub-economic, Ba-Zn mineralisation. Widespread iron carbonate alteration of the footwall and high Si, B and Zn values in the hangingwall 'fingerprint' the deposit and along with the distinct facies variations provide aids to exploring the Tom and like deposits.

As the iron ore/magnetite boom gains momentum, it is particularly important to question established past trends and explore the potential of alternative design options. Traditionally, ‘rule of thumb’ methods have been used to size dewatering equipment. Greater consideration needs to be given to technological advancements and specific throughput testing of each ore body type based on innovative developments.This paper will describe how an innovative approach resulted not only in significant savings in capital cost and site work hours but also delivered a truly optimised design for the thickener duty at Karara. Test work also played a crucial role and a comprehensive test work program on the ore samples showed the scale-up benefi ts of new technology in thickener designs. Working closely with the Karara team during the laboratory testing proved the old sizing theories for iron ore/magnetite processing have been superseded with the knowledge and results of the industry’s newest feedwell technology. Increased solids flux and rise rates in the testing process proved very successful, resulting in signifi cantly reduced thickener sizes and lower capital expense.Mechanical design considerations such as removal of underflow and pump access led to a preference for an above-ground thickener confi guration, and the economics of a completefabrication and installation package favoured steel construction for the thickener units.The ultimate choice of the bolted/fl anged tank methodology provides both economic and timely solutions for the site installation including reduced man power and quick and safe site-work. A benefits comparison between this design and other fabrication and installation procedures will also be analysed in the paper.

The top submerged lance (TSL) technology, developed in the 1970s, is now widely used for the processing of a range of materials. The key advantage the ISASMELT™ TSL technology provided was the ability to process feed materials in a highly turbulent bath, reaching close to equilibrium conditions, uniquely allowing for operation below the liquidus of the molten slag phase. The details on what happened below the liquidus line in the phase diagram became critical for the successful operation of the technology. During the development of the ISASMELT™ technology this led to a collaboration between the Process Technology group of Mount Isa Mines, now part of Glencore Technology, and the Pyrometallurgy Research Centre (PYROSEARCH) at The University of Queensland. The fusion of the phase equilibria research into the technology development allowed for understanding of the behaviour of molten splash, reliable tapping of the furnace, and the ability to operate the furnace with a refractory lining and achieve a year campaign life in excess of four years. The outcome has allowed for the highly successful adaption of the ISASMELT™ technology to recycling of complex feed streams necessary to drive circularity in our modern global economy.

The Australian bulk explosives industry has matured significantly over the last five years and it would appear that the rest of the world is following suit. This maturity is characterised by the technical sophistication of modem bulk explosives, an increase in the technical competence of the explosives consumer and a greater openness in the debate on the quality and performance of explosives. The principal mechanism by which these advances have been made is undoubtedly commercial competition in the market place although a new element, technical competition between manufacturers and independent professionals, has and will continue to play an important role in the development of the industry. The relationship between the explosives manufacturer and consumer is necessarily both complementary and competitive. This paper identifies the need for the consumer to take a more prominent role in the critical analysis of the performance of explosives and to use his commercial influence to direct explosives manufacturers at least in the direction required for the future technical development of the industry.

The late 1960's and 1970's saw the initial development of the coal resources of the Bowen Basin of Queensland. The projects developed relied on large scale, open-cut operations using draglines for overburden removal and, in the majority of cases, project viability could be established based solely on those open-cut operations. Many of the mines developed in the 1980's have the same characteristics.Unlike these mines, the German Creek Mine has limited open-cut reserves at low overburden to coal ratios, and planning of the complex involved a large open-cut mine capable of developing early cash flow, with phased introduction of underground mining to replace open-cut capacity as the strip ratio increased.

Each of us has a vision of what the future mine will be and, generally, these visions have many similarities and some differences. One of the major discrepancies in visions of the future mine is not the ultimate goal but the path to achieve it. Many of the future concepts require a radical re-thinking of how things are and will be done yet. So how do we reach this visionary future mine? We need a path that satisfies both our future aspirations of a high tech gee-whiz operated from our iPads and the unfortunately mundane approach that says ‘we must know the method works, ie nothing new’.This paper explores how, within a research based organisation, we firstly set our ultimate goal and then divide the path into realistic technology development chunks that would appeal to mining companies to progress within their organisational constraints. Through examples, such as, automated LHDs, communications systems, surveying and localisation, rock cutting and geological sensing, we illustrate how this path will get us from the here and now to the out there future.This paper also demonstrates CSIRO’s short, medium and long-term research in many of the areas needed to create the Future Mine: mining methods, automation and remote control, mine communications, mapping and mission planning, geological sensing and, importantly, human-system integration, which examines how to effectively present data as information to operators and supervisors in an intelligent and useful manner.

For many crushed aggregate producers will the finest fraction minus 4 mm represent a problem. The fine material will fetch a much lower price than the coarser products, and may even be difficult to sell in some markets. The blasting operation will strongly influence the generation of fines after both blasting and crushing. Drill hole deviation together with the drill hole diameter, powder factor and velocity of detonation are the most important blasting parameters with regard to the generation of fines. Drill hole deviation is often ignored, and many operators will just reduce the drilling pattern in order to avoid hard bottom and an excessive number of boulders. The paper presents a technical and economic analysis of how drill hole deviation will lead to an increased generation of fines in crushed aggregate production. The analysis shows that the loss of sales revenues will be much higher than the extra costs for drilling and blasting caused by compensating for drill hole deviation by putting in more holes.

"Spring Creek Mine uses high pressure water to extract the thick Main seam in the Upper Rewanuicoal measures. The extraction method results in the creation of large voids which collapsespontaneously. This can result in the displacement of large volumes of methane, which may create a signifi cant hazard if not correctly managed. A system of automatic dilution doors is employed to mitigate this risk. This paper describes the evolution of the system and gives some examples of its eff ectiveness."

Testwork carried out in the cooling water circuit at the Yabulu treatment plant of the Greenvale Joint Venturers (Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated) since 1980 has resulted in significant improvements to both fouling and corrosion control. At the same time corrosion inhibitor costs have been reduced.Acrylate-type silt dispersants were identified as the most effective means of sediment control in the circuit. An increase in the cathodic component of the corrosion inhibitor coupled with a relatively minor adjustment to water pH has yielded a two to three fold reduction in corrosion rate. It has been established that these lower corrosion rates can be sustained in the face of a 20% reduction in corrosion inhibitor addition rate. Further improvements are indicated with a change of raw water algicide.

The current study integrates hydrogeochemical and stable isotope results to investigate the sources and evolution of acid mine drainage at the historic Mount Morgan gold mine in Queensland, including the controlling factors and mechanisms of sulfate formation. The open pit and seepage sumps contain acid-sulfate waters and show elevated Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn values. Samples collected from the Dee River bordering the mine site are less acidic, with lower concentrations of dissolved metals that gradually attenuate downstream from the mine. Concentrated acid mine waters has lead to formation of efflorescences consisting mainly of hydrous Fe-sulfates. The results of the ongoing isotope analyses on water samples show distinctive grouping of the data. The range of the sulfur isotope values for dissolved sulfate in samples from the open pit and sumps (d34S = 2.1 to 3.0 per mil) are similar to those of sulfides in the Main Pipe mineralisation (d34S = - 0.2 to 2.8 per mil). The lack of fractionation between sulfides and sulfate indicates that intermediate oxidation states of sulfur are not significant and makes this technique a useful tracer to identify the sources of sulfate. The Dee River samples, on the other hand, have heavier sulfur isotopes (d34S = 2.8 to 5.0 per mil). These samples may contain dissolved sulfate from æinternal sourcesÆ in the river basin, show local bacterial reduction or indicate a simple mixing trend. Further isotope analyses including oxygen isotopes of dissolved sulfates will enhance the interpretations.

The installation of a final cleaning column at Ok Tedi Mining Limited was carried out to increase final concentrate grade in order to reduce concentrate handling, shipping and treatment charges and to reduce penalty payments. To fast-track the project a decision was made to install a full-size column on one of the two parallel circuits, designed on information readily available and utilising the experience of mill staff and an engineering consultant, rather than delay installation while a pilot scale program was conducted. A 3.66 m diameter by 12.8 m high column was installed to produce 40 t/h of final concentrate from a combination of rougher concentrate and recleaner concentrate. The column design and sparger system were by Cominco Engineering Services Limited.

"Implicit modelling is an approach to spatial modelling in which the distribution of a target variable is described by a unique mathematical function that is derived directly from the underlying data and high-level parametric controls specified by the user. This modelling approach may be applied to discrete variables such as lithology (after converting the discrete codes to numeric values) or to continuous variables such as geochemical grades. This paper discusses the estimation of continuous (grade) variables using implicit modelling.One of the underlying engines of implicit modelling for producing this mathematical function description is the radial basis function (RBF). In essence, the RBF is a weighted sum of functions positioned on each data point. A system of linear equations is solved to derive weights and the coefficients of any underlying drift model coefficients. Once derived, the RBF may be solved for any unsampled point or averaged over any volume to provide an estimate of grade. It is possible, for example, to query the RBF on a regular grid to derive an estimate of block grades. Given the ease of creation of an RBF, and its ability to predict grade, the question arises as to how the grades derived from the solution of an RBF compare with grade estimates derived from conventional geostatistical interpolation methods (eg ordinary kriging (OK)).The purpose of this paper is to describe in lay terms: the basic structure of an RBF the role of parametric choice in the solution of RBFs and how this influences the character of the solution the fundamental similarities and differences between RBFs and conventional geostatistical estimators.Using a high-resolution conditional simulation, we show that in many situations RBF and OK estimates are very similar.CITATION:Stewart, M, de Lacey, J, Hodkiewicz, P F and Lane, R, 2014. The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore from sublevel open stopes annually. Extraction of the narrow, steeply dipping silver-lead-zinc orebodies requires a strategy quite different to that used in the massive copper orebodies. A range of blasthole diameters, explosive types and initiation systems gives the flexibility needed to adapt open stoping to a variety of situations. Hole diameters from 70 mm to 200 mm are being used, with lengths of up to 100 m common for the latter.

"Suboptimal performance of clusters of hydrocyclones (cyclones), relative to the performance of the individual cyclones that comprise the cluster, is a common phenomenon. The primary cause is well known: uneven distribution of the slurry feed into the individual cyclones. The direct result of uneven distribution is that each cyclone in a cluster performs somewhat differently. Hence, some, if not all, of them do not work at their intended operating points, and the classification is not as sharp as intended. The impact on grade, recovery and milling efficiency will vary depending on the duty of the processing circuit, but the most immediately apparent consequence of uneven distribution is a difference in wear rates in the individual cyclones; this exacerbates the problems of unequal performance of the individual cyclones. In severe cases, and as differential wear proceeds, flows from the individual cyclones may become visibly different. Uneven distribution, once the phenomenon was identified, was seen to be a significant issue in the high-solids hydrocyclone cluster in the ball mill recycle section of Evolution Mining’s Edna May Operation (EMO, Westonia, Western Australia) gold processing plant. In 2012, a FloCEP® hydrocyclone feed distributor system was installed to alleviate the problem. Over the next four years of operation, this innovation has proven its value in the metallurgical and maintenance areas. Individual cyclones now wear at the same rate, greatly reducing the need for operator intervention, as well as increasing overall plant availability through minimising unplanned maintenance. The costs of the installation can be justified by savings in maintenance alone, though the greatest value, as is described in this paper, is in allowing the plant to produce consistently closer to its operational design limits. The FloCEP® system is a low maintenance, readily installed retrofit, based on two patented devices that are combined with complementary proprietary design methodology allowing customisation for specific flow rates and slurry particle properties. The Southern 'B' lode orebody at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine, Broken Hill, is a continuation of the zinc-rich orebody that was first mined in NBHC in the 1940's. Preliminary diamond drilling in the early 1960's resulted in sufficient information to delineate the southern extension of the presently mined 'B' lode orebody, In 1966 the sinking of a 7.3 metre diameter circular shaft (No. 3 Airway) was commenced to improve the ventilation of the southern extremities of existing workings and to provide a base to further explore and develop the orebody extension. Development on four levels was started in the early 1970'.s to link the existing workings with the new shaft. Three possible mining methods - sublevel open stoping, loader cut and fill with ramp access and sublevel caving - were investigated and the decision was made to mine the orebody by transverse sublevel longhole stopes and pillars with trackless equipment and ramp access between the major working levels.

The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business.
