Ore Reserves estimation for the two producing copper orebodies at Isa Mine, Mount Isa, Queensland is discussed. The principal estimation techniques used and discussed are first, a computer based inverse power distance weighted assay meshing technique, and second, a manual arithmetic averaging technique. The principles involved in these techniques are compared, and their areas of application indicated. A general comparison of the estimation of reserves with eventual production is presented.

The Convergence Confinement Method (CCM) is one of the frequently used methods that considers the ground response to the advancing tunnel face. The CCM analytical solutions represent stress relaxation on circular tunnel walls in a rock/soil media. The CCM analytical solutions is based on circular tunnel geometry and consider a hydrostatic stress field in a homogeneous isotropic rock mass condition. However, noncircular tunnel geometries, non-hydrostatic stress field, staged excavation process in a discontinuous anisotropic non-linear rock mass conditions are usually ignored in these analytical solutions. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the existing CCM analytical solutions developed for elastic and elastoplastic ground behaviour for circular tunnels. For this purpose, a finite difference analysis is conducted to compare the analytical results with the results obtained from Finite Difference Method (FDM) for a chosen rock mass condition. Results obtained from the investigation shows that floor, crown and wall displacement are 30%, 10% and 23% more, respectively, in a horse-shoe relative to a circular tunnel. This indicates that the application of analytical formulation tailored for circular tunnels would lead to inaccurate quantification of wall convergence in horseshoe-shaped tunnels. Copper grades of diamond drill hole and development samples are determined in the core shed logging area at Mount Isa Mine using a Bulk Mineral Analyser. All geological and grade data on the copper orebodies is collected and stored on computer file.The raw data can be manipulated interactively using a computer terminal or by input of forms to produce output as computer plots or printouts. Grade distribution of copper or cobalt is obtained by the geologist using a computer kriging package followed by grade contouring. Computer plotted cross-sections and plans of individual stopes or several stopes can be produced showing geological structures, kriged grades at points and as grade contours.

Expanding rock bolts anchor within a rock mass more efficiently than non-expanding varieties. This is of great importance in weak ground conditions, where grouted friction bolts perform less efficiently than in good ground conditions. Filling a Split Set with demolition concrete has been shown to double the load-carrying capacity when compared to conventional use of Split Sets. This report details verification of these results by installing and pull-testing 14 Split Sets of varying grout conditions within in a fault zone. These Expanding Split Sets achieved loads double and triple that of ungrouted and normally grouted conventional Split Sets. A literature review and chemical analysis were conducted to understand the expansion process better. It was found that 20 per cent more calcium is included in expanding cement, which is responsible for its growth. Factors most affecting the expansion process were identified. Furthermore, the expansion rate of a bolt outside a borehole was measured and 6 mm of expansion across its diameter was found. The compressive properties of the cement were compared with other types, due to expanding cement becoming uncohesive after the expansion process is complete. When confined within a Split Set, compression testing demonstrated that this grout is just as strong and rigid as normal grout. Finally, the bolts were tested by shear and it was found that the Expanding Split Set (ESS) has a similar shear capacity to grouted Split Sets, which is 70 per cent higher than that of ungrouted Split Sets. These results enabled the mechanism for improved performance in weak ground conditions to be verified. Expanding grout will expand the Split Set into its borehole of varying diameter and lock it into place, creating increased friction and resistance to pull-out. The Mine Safety and Inspection Act, 1994 of Western Australia recognises the importance of ground control in underground mining. The recent safety performance of underground mining is summarised in terms of the most common causes of injury and fatal accidents. A review of current ground control practices is presented and the concepts of local and large-scale ground control are introduced. The need for a more systematic approach to ground control is considered to be directly related to requirement to improve safety performance. The new regulations will require that certain geotechnical issues be addressed during the life of a mine. To comply with the regulations it is suggested that a ground control management plan be developed for each mine. The geotechnical issues associated with the ground control management plan are reviewed and hazard recognition aspects discussed.

Chalcopyrite ore and converter slag treatment to produce copper concentrates is undertaken at the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. This concentrator was commissioned in May 1973, replacing the original No 1 Lead-Zinc Concentrator, for the processing of all chalcopyrite ore coming from Mount Isa Mine.Treatment of chalcopyrite ore at rates of up to 125 000 l/week is described here; the treatment of converter slag is described later.

Installation of flotation equipment is a lengthy and intricate process involving conceptual design, detailed design and layout, equipment installation, equipment commissioning and handover prior to the plant commencing operation. During these steps, mistakes are often made that lead to increased costs and/or schedule delays in bringing the new equipment online.This paper presents a series of recommendations for the installation and commissioning of flotation equipment to minimise mistakes and ensure that plant production commences efficiently with a minimum of resources. The Vera Nancy orebodies, although simple in overall geometry, are in detail generally narrow, multi-veined and fluctuating in width, strike and dip. Tight geological control is required to optimise gold and silver production from this bench stoping operation. The processes used to model the resource and to control ore drive development have evolved since mining commenced in 1997. Grade control is a combination of orebody sampling, geological data collection, understanding orebody geometry and the optimisation of ore driving and stoping activities. Global resource modelling utilises mainly drill hole data which is largely superceded by drive development data as stope development progresses. The orebody has a relatively low nugget effect that assists in grade estimation. Rather than rely on sophisticated grade interpolation methods, resource estimation to-date has focussed on developing the geological understanding of the orebody to ensure the framework for estimation is correct. Drill data alone is not adequate to define deposit geometry for stoping . Drive data is used as the dominant data set for stope geology modelling once development for a stope is complete.

Geotechnical conditions often have a critical influence on the design of new open pit and underground mines, but they are often considered of secondary importance in relation to other factors, such as detailed geology, orebody geometry and grade distribution. As a result, geotechnical studies may not be carried out during early project investigations or, at best, may be given only superficial attention, often to the overall detriment of the project. Technically and economically, it is logical that geotechnical studies should be integrated with geological investigations as soon as it becomes evident that the particular deposit may prove to be economic. The paper discusses the use of geotechnical information in the selection of mining methods and mine design for underground mines and for wall design and assessment of excavation characteristics in open pit mines. It then considers methods of obtaining the relevant data, with particular reference to exploration boreholes. Selected case studies on the application of geotechnical data to mine design are Included.

At the proposed Crandon Project, mill tailings would be depyritised for upland disposal. The resulting pyrite concentrate would be disposed of in the underground workings as a cement-amended paste backfill. In the long term, the underground workings would be flooded and the potential for the paste backfill to generate acid would be limited. However, while the mine is operational, there is potential for oxygen ingress to the backfill that may lead to sulfide mineral oxidation and acid generation. A series of humidity cell tests were completed to assess the potential for groundwater contamination. To assess effects of surface area on oxidation, the humidity cell tests were conducted on moulded cubes of paste backfill. The tests were terminated at different intervals, and the cubes were dissected and examined mineralogically. Various leach extraction procedures were also used to assess the progress of oxidation and secondary mineralisation within the paste backfill. The test results showed that: the cement amendment significantly contributes to acid neutralisation and results in a lag in excess of one year before the onset of acidic conditions (in comparison to less than three weeks for the pyrite concentrate); the depth of oxidation in the paste backfill is restricted to about 1 mm after 107 weeks of testing; and secondary minerals form a distinct ærindÆ at the surface of the paste backfill. The results indicate that acid generation in the backfilled stopes would be minimal. The importance of including the surface area effect in the testing (ie using moulded cubes) is clearly demonstrated.

Coal mining activity first began on the West Coast in 1864 and has since led to the exposure of large areas of coal and host rock to chemical weathering. These exposed abandoned workings have led to the formation of acid mine drainage, which flows into selected rivers and streams impacting on the natural environment. A previous study conducted for the West Coast Regional Council identified four catchments receiving mine drainage which had elevated arsenic concentrations. The aim of this research is to expand on this initial study by determining the spatial distribution and attenuation of the arsenic within the sediment and water column in each stream of concern. Cannel Creek is influenced from drainage from the Bellevue coal mine adit and exhibits a low pH of ~3, elevated sulfate concentrations and high arsenic and iron concentrations in the sediments. This pattern is repeated in the Rapid Stream and Soldiers Creek catchments, which are also affected by adit inflows from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Soldiers Creek also has significantly high arsenic in the waters, with an accompanying pH of ~5.5. Snowy River exhibits a similar trait with a pH also of ~5.5, but with very low sulfate concentrations. Arsenic concentrations in the waters are consistently around 30 ppb, with sediment concentrations up to 900 ppm. These sediment values might be partially attributable to the operation of the Snowy battery gold ore production facility, but the consistently high As concentrations in the water column and in the sediment upstream of the battery have an as yet unconfirmed source.

The Racecourse Orebodies at Mount Isa consist of a series of parallel steeply dipping lead/zinc/silver orebodies with a strike length of up to 1000 metres. Production from these orebodies between 13 Level to 9 Level has been by a series of cut and fill stopes in two level stages, leaving a crown pillar at 11 level. Development of the 15 level to 13 level extraction stage has recently been completed. The layout consists of a series of parallel stopes over a strike length of 1200 metres. Access to the stopes is by two declines connecting the stopes with a series of crosscuts This paper describes the basic layout with development and production methods employed.

At the Cominco Ltd plant in Trail, British Columbia, the Betts lead electrorefining operation requires that antimony and arsenic be present in the lead bullion for anode slimes stability control. Until 1986 the antimony and arsenic inputs from concentrates to the Lead Smelter needed to be supplemented with high antimony and arsenic content recycles from the Silver Refinery operation to maintain a satisfactory composition. Subsequently the antimony and arsenic inputs have increased as a result of increasing levels of antimony in Sullivan lead concentrate and the purchase of larger quantities of silver/gold bearing concentrates that inherently have higher antimony and arsenic levels. The increase has exceeded the limits required by the Betts process. It therefore became necessary to install a partial softening process downstream of the Continuous Drossing Furnace to satisfactorily control the bullion composition. Process control and oxygen injection techniques used in the partial softening process are reviewed. Approximately 8 tonnes/day of softening slag are produced having a combined antimony and arsenic content of 25 percent. This slag is reduced in a recently commissioned short rotary furnace followed by vacuum distillation of the metal for recovery of the antimony and arsenic values.

Hard rock underground mining has been wedded to the drill-blast method of breaking rock. Current practice and technology have focused on greater efficiencies in the blasting and handling of ore, on the basis that thelower costs that come with larger scale operations compensate for the waste dilution associated with the bulk methods. However, it is suggested that new technology is available or is on the horizon that could completely change the shape of hard rock mining in the 21st century. Hard-rock continuous-mining machines, possibly assisted by high pressure water jets, coupled with automated sorting and materials handling systems, could re-orient the miner's focus to winning metal rather than mining tonnes of ore. More continuous mining processes could accelerate the penetration by high technology in the hard rock underground mine, with the potential of greater manpower productivities and lower costs per tonne of metal produced. This new technology will be important in maintaining a competitive supply of metals, given the falling headgrades of the orebodies remaining for development and the increasing market threat from manufactured substitutes.

Two coal samples (810 Panel and Area 900) collected from Clarence Colliery have been tested under a controlled heating procedure to evaluate the gas evolution trends corresponding to increasing temperature. Gas evolution data are normally used to identify key gas indicators and validate the trigger action response plan settings for the mine as part of the Principal Hazard Management Plan for Spontaneous Combustion. The samples were located some 6 km apart and there is a significant coal-type difference between them. At low temperatures (<100°C), the Graham’s ratio (GR) values for the two samples are almost identical. However, at elevated temperatures, there is a significant difference, with the 810 Panel coal having higher GR values than the Area 900 coal. This is most likely due to a difference in the coal reactivity. The 810 Panel coal does not evolve ethylene until temperatures in excess of 140°C are reached, whereas Area 900 coal evolves ethylene once temperatures in excess of 120°C are reached. The 810 Panel coal also produces significant ethane evolution (200 ppm) at low temperatures (50°C) due to the presence of retained ethane seam gas, which decreases as the temperature increases due to desorption from the coal. Once the coal temperature exceeds 130°C, the ethane evolution increases again due to coal oxidation reactions, reaching levels of 50 ppm. In contrast, the Area 900 coal has no significant low-temperature ethane evolution, and ethane evolution only increases once the coal temperature exceeds 120°C. There are also noticeable differences in the trends of other gases evolved from the coal. These findings have implications for the interpretation of gas monitoring results from the two different areas of the mine. Ore textures in base metal deposits are an important factor in the liberation of the economic components of the ore, metal recovery and reagent consumption during beneficiation. Optimising the mine profit requires knowing the relationship between ore texture and mineral processing behaviour, and the ability to predict the metal grade and the ore texture at a suitable scale. A new method that generates distributions of mesotextures for any mining block size or shape is proposed and includes: I . establishing a protocol for acquiring mesotexture data: 2. measuring the mesotexture spatial correlations using a multi-texture variogram; 3. generating multiple simulations of mesotextures; and 4. upscaling the simulations to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. Models of the ore textures built using the proposed methodology can be used to assess resources and reserves, enhance ore/waste discrimination and predict the metallurgical behaviour of parcels of ore.

It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. A wide variety of copper-bearing gold ores exist throughout the world which have yet to be processed economically for gold recovery. The copper minerals present in these ores can be many and varied and usually result in high cyanide consumptions and problematical levels of copper in leach solutions. The copper content is often assessed as being of nuisance value as the ores are generally of the grade or type which can support neither a copper project nor a straight gold project, due to the interference of copper. Many of these problematical gold-copper ores could possibly be processed economically for gold recovery using a novel ammoniacal cyanide leaching system which utilises a copper-ammonia-cyanide complex as an effective lixiviant for gold, yet limits copper dissolution and conserves cyanide. Results from recent testing have promoted a re-evaluation of the economics of treating some gold-copper ores. This paper describes the novel leaching process and discusses the conditions employed to treat a variety of gold-copper ores.
