As a direct result of the Mining Industries need to improve efficiency and production in Open Pit type operations, the size of haulage units have increased dramatically. This trend has continued such, that the majority of dump trucks operating in Open Pit operations are in the 170 ton class. Continued mining in existing locations has meant that the increase in vertical lift and resultant grades, and increases in hauling distances are making electric drive systems unsuitable. This is largely due to the electric drive systems heat limitations on major propulsion components. With these mining requirements in view and the present limitations on electric drive systems in mind, Komatsu have been developing the Komatsu HD1600M. The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining, processing and marketing methods.

Two significant TBM boreability predic- tion models are outlined. Predicted advance rates are compared with actual advance rates taken from twenty case histories. The results show that a simple low cost method that uses one machine parameter and one rock parameter compares very favourably with a high cost sophisticated method which also includes information regarding discontinuities in the rock mass. The effect of rock texture on drillability is also examined. A method of quantifying rock texture has been developed and is outlined. Experimental results show that the developed TEXTURE COEFFICIENT returns highly statisti- cally significant correlations with drilla- bility data in a wide range of rock types.

A novel method for determining viable cells of the mineral leaching bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been developed. The cells were collected on 0.45/Lm cellulose acetate filters, washed with artificial minewater, and incubated in the presence of ferrous ion at pH3 in an atmosphere containing radioactive (14C) carbon dioxide. Colonies of bacterial growth were detected by the image formed on X-ray photographic paper (autoradiography). The method was compared with three conventional techniques and shown to detect three orders of magnitude more cells in cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the late exponential phase of growth.

The hydrocyclone parameter d5Oc is estimated by the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Results indicate that ANN performs equally well as compared to statically derived analytical formulae. Results also show that ANN will also be convenient in the on-line control of hydrocyclones.

Laboratory high tension roll separation and the commercial machines available for this purpose are discussed. The shortcomings of these machines are indicated and a machine that overcomes some of these undesirable character- istics is described. A procedure for evaluating laboratory high tension roll separation is described. The use of this evaluation procedure in conjunction with the laboratory separation is described with examples taken from the Dunwich and Hexham processing plants of Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited. Evidence that laboratory testwork results may be directly transposed to operating plants is given. A discussion of the effects of variables in high tension roll separation of mineral sand concentrates concludes the paper, and uses in support results obtained in the metallurgical laboratories of Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited, Southport, Queensland.

The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. Magmatic-related low sulphidation hydrothermal ore systems at plate margins exhibit distinct spatial and temporal zonations which can be used to aid mineral exploration and development. Low sulphidation systems at all crustal levels exhibit the same paragenetic sequence of events: early breccia formation, followed by quartz - secondary feldspar - sericite/illite veining, then mineralisation, and final argillic overprint. This sequence of events is interpreted to reflect the initial emplacement of melts at high crustal levels, and the progressive cooling of that melt and release of magmatic constituents into a circulating hydrothermal system.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

Quite often the reserve assessor becomes enamored with the numbers gen- erated and forgets the basis for his assessment. The quality of the assess- ment can only be as good as the quality of the input data. The use of seismic data from the Gippsland Basin in assess- ing Esso/BHP's oil and gas reserves is an excellent example of this principle. By significantly improving the quality of seismic data, a much more reliable estimate of a field's reserve potential can be made. In addition, it provides the basis for further delineation drill- ing which, as recent experience in Gippsland has shown, often leads to increased reserves.

A co-operative research project, combining Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research scientists findings and company iron ore geologists' expertise, resulted in new concepts about the origins, distribution and complexitie of iron ores and their parent rocks (banded iron-formation or BIF) in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Understanding these problems was important to the efficiency of exploration, development and ultimate mining of iron ores. This genetic model, based on a detailed mineralogic background, was modified by Mt Newman geologists to obtain a user oriented classification for practical application in the field.The proposed Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) gives iron ore geologists a basis from which to understand, identify and record the various mineralogic and physical characteristics of the many genetically different ore types occurring within and between orebodies in the Pilbara. More definitive quality control over ore products can be achieved based on the detailed understanding of ore types which the PIOC allows, compared to current classifications which deal only with the physical nature of ores. Of equal importance, the classification remains sufficiently simple to enable owners, operators and buyers to achieve a basic appreciation of ore type variations.With little modification, it is believed the classification has applications beyond the Pilbara, to iron ore worldwide.

The Australian underground coal mining industry is undergoing major changes. This paper analyses the technologies presently being researched in mines, and discusses their utilisation as major contributors in the underground mining of coal in Australia over the next 20 years. It describes the problems that underground mining of the year 2000 will face and the possible solutions to those problems based upon results of present day research. Methods, equipment and organisational requirements are outlined. Developments in micro-electronics, computerisation and monitoring will require a new look into human resource development, education and training, and organisation to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Observations of coal stockpiles subject to unusual levels of instability showed that the particular coals exhibited 'gap grading', a relative lack of intermediate size particles. This led to a suggestion that fine coal particles within the pile might have been induced to migrate under the influence of water flow and to concentrate in relatively impervious layers, resulting in local water saturation and reduction of shear strength. To investigate this suggestion, a large test column has been constructed and washed coals with various levels of fines content have been subjected to a downward flow of water. Subsequent examination of the bed of coal within the column confirmed the percolation of fines and their concentration into horizontal layers, and showed the development of zones of saturation above those layers. Shear box tests showed differences in cohesion and internal friction angle between coals with different percentages of fines, supporting the hypothesis that fines percolation may lead to decreased stability.

Rock blasting outcomes are often a shared responsibility of both the mine operations group and the mine geotechnical group. From an operational logistics and planning perspective, blasting concerns include optimal fragmentation for subsequent crushing, ensuring the blast is energetic enough to allow easy digging, and understanding the effect of muck from a previous blast on the current blast. From a geotechnical perspective, wall damage and catch bench capacity are the primary concerns. Other concerns for both teams include damage to mine infrastructure by fly rock or blast-induced vibrations, and the stability of open stopes under the pit. This work presents two blast modelling applications (or ‘apps’). The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and wall damage predictions for a given generic blast design. The advanced app loads the current pit contours, reads the blast design from a spreadsheet, and calculates the expected vibration magnitude and peak frequency. The apps have been developed specifically for the Rio Tinto Borates and Lithium Mine in California and are used to support blast design between the operations group and geotechnical group. The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and vibration predictions given a blast design by combining the Kuz-Ram fragmentation model with the scaled distance model for vibrations. The advanced app uses the signature hole method. Blasting outcomes at the mine have improved since using the apps.

Pillar mining methods at the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations are not new. Since mining commenced on Pasminco's leases at the turn of the century virtually every pillar extraction method tried throughout the world has been used. Much of the remaining mineral resource in the Pasminco Broken Hill leases is contained in pillars.However, due to the on-going need for mechanisation with bulk mining methods, and the very peculiar physical circumstances surrounding the formation of these pillars, their exploitation requires the development of a virtually new method based on excavation technology not previously used in the Australian mining industry. Trials of the method are to take place at the southern operations during 1991.

Surface disposal of mining processing wastes is usually perceived as an undesirable consequence of meeting societyÆs needs for metals and minerals. Environmental disasters associated with the discharge or storage of such wastes, though infrequent, can have very damaging consequences for the environment and the industry. Reducing or eliminating the potential for such events may be achieved by placing some or all of these processing wastes back into the voids created by the mining operations. Processing operations may limit or enhance the opportunities for using tailings and other waste products as a backfill material. Backfilling is a truly multi-disciplinary process and requires the informed involvement of mining, metallurgical, engineering and environmental specialists. This paper describes the range of fill types currently being used in Australian mines, particularly those utilising processing wastes as constituents. It focuses on how processing operations can affect the suitability of these materials for the various types of fill, the resulting fill properties, fill performance and costs.
