"Establishing ventilation in the early stages of a new mine is an essential step to achieve scheduled outcomes that ultimately drive the financial success of an operation. If the primary ventilation is not in place in time to support a contractorÆs work output, then the ore delivery is likely to be severely impacted. Options to increase ventilation in order to address shortfalls are limited. This in turn can lead to reduced revenue generation at a time when a mine is at its highest capital outlay. This can have implications for any company, but even more for an explorer moving to producer. The ventilation put in place to cover the start-up period is also unlikely to cover any extended or increased load required to meet schedule delays.The following paper examines two issues in relation to ventilation with a focus on small to medium projects where the company is establishing a mine using a mining contractor. The issues being: potential impacts on the contract and tender process when using a mining contractor key mine design considerations, such as æcrunch timeÆ, as they interact with ventilation achieving a successful ramp up.A recommendation is made for higher levels of detail around secondary ventilation leading up to the primary fan installation. The information should be included as part of the tendering process and preliminary project execution planning. Understanding the æcrunch timeÆ concept can lead to strategies, as well as back up plans, to minimise any negative impact.By understanding key risks around primary ventilation establishment for a new mine, detailed design work can be completed where it is needed most. Value is added by reducing uncertainty and a payback with better contract terms and a more robust ramp up plan. This paper puts the view that, for one gold deposit in Victoria at least, the Australasian Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources is severely deficient. The author questions whether or not the Code constrains the proper dissemination of information relevant to resource valuation. The author offers a view about the estimation of inferred resources, and provides data believed pertinent to the proper valuation of Ballarat Goldfields Ltd Ballarat East Project.

The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Iron ore sinter mineralogy and its associated macro-/micro – structure has a strong impact on sinter quality. At a macroscopic scale, sinter ideally consists of a strong, porous matrix which bonds relict ore nuclei together. Microscopically, the sinter matrix (solidified from the melt part of the initial sinter mix) generally consists of complex calcium ferrites known as SFCA, secondary magnetite and hematite grains (precipitated from the primary sinter melt), glass and silicates. Depending on the conditions under which the sinter structure is formed, two major forms of SFCA with different morphologies are generally recognised, ie fine micro-platy SFCA (usually termed SFCA-I) and coarse columnar/prismatic SFCA. Detailed optical microscope observations of several pot grate and compact sinter samples revealed the presence of a variety of fine, coarse and dense forms of both types of SFCA. The controlled cooling tests revealed that cooling rate has an impact on the form and size of SFCA crystals. In this work, EPMA analysis of SFCA compositions from a variety of pot grate and compact sinter samples are presented. Results show that the SFCA types exhibit a broad range of complex compositions within the system Fe2O3/CaO/SiO2/Al2O3/MgO/TiO2/MnO2. Although SFCA-I and SFCA are known to be crystallographically distinct and with different, well-defined ranges in composition, there was considerable overlap in compositions of the experimental sinter samples. The development of SFCA textures depend on several parameters including the local chemistry and conditions including the maximum temperature attained and the cooling rate, within the sinter bed, thereby suggesting that SFCA identification based on morphology alone may be erroneous.

In the first part of this paper, the principal sources of dilution during underground evaluation and mining are discussed, then definitions of ore dilution currently in use are analysed. These definitions vary depending on the authors. Ten different analytical expressions of dilution percentage currently exist. It is demonstrated, with the help of a numerical example for a given mining condition, that dilution percentage results vary considerably and that they depend on the definition used. This situation makes it difficult to compare different results regarding the dilution problem, often because some of the terms used are contradictory. A new ore dilution evaluation methodology is proposed, replacing the ten different analytical expressions by only two: the planned dilution factor related to the stoping selectivity, done at the mine planning level, and the additional dilution factor related to the efficiency of the dilution control measures during stoping operations. The conclusion shows that the use of this methodology would be a definitive asset in planning, in stoping operations follow-up, and in future costs comparison studies between mining operations.

Operations at the Mount Bonnie gold/silver project are described. The project is based on the gossan of a stratiform and stratabound polymetallic sulphide deposit. The gossan contains approx- imately 100 000 tonne of ore grading 8g/tonne Au and 230g/tonne Ag. This is mined in an open cut, and transported to a stockpile area lkm away, from which it is fed to the treat- ment plant. The ore is crushed through two stages and fed to a fine ore storage shed, from which it is reclaimed, milled and cyanide leached in draft tube agitators. The pulp is filtered using a horizontal belt filter to recover a pregnant solution. Silver sulphide is precipitated using sodium sulphide solution, and collected as a mixed sulphide/precoat concentrate on a drum filter. The solution is then passed through carbon columns where the gold is adsorbed and is subsequently recovered by methanol desorption using a process developed by Micron Research, and electrowinning. Modifications to the treatment plant circuit based on operational experience are Described.

The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold \lincs 1't% Ltd hati pla,xd all the major the gold producing areas adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie/Boulder under one management, enabling the development of the 'Super Pit'. This has facilitated the economic optimisation of the resource. Optimisation has been achieved by the timely collection and presentation of data and the use of these data to reduce costs and improve planning procedures.In particular the following issues have been addressed:ò the reduction of the impact of the mining activity on the adjacent urban population centre,ò implementation of safety procedures for mining through underground voids,ò the determination of the optimum bench height and mining method for ore production benches and blast design. This system is fundamentally based on maintaining a high degree of selectivity while achieving a balance of relatively low unit operating costs,ò assessment of the comparable benefits of contractor versus owner operated earth moving equipment, andò the development of effective ore body models, production reconciliation and the long term mine planning procedures to facilitate effective strategic planning.

In an environment of lower zinc prices, falling revenues and reducing zinc feed grades, Century mine implemented a fast-tracked capital upgrade program in less than 15 months. The program was designed to increase ore milling throughput capacity by 20 per cent and optimise the capacity of the flotation plant to increase zinc recovery by approximately 2.5 per cent whilst maintaining final zinc concentrate grade.A key aspect of this program was minimising capital expenditure by better utilising existing capacity and only adding capacity where absolutely required to address critical processing bottlenecks. By gaining an understanding of plant process bottlenecks and future ore blends, and by carefully selecting appropriate technologies for particular specific flotation applications, maximum return on minimal capital investment was achieved.The close collaborative work achieved between the metallurgy processing department and other operational departments on-site was also critical to the success of this project. This work increased the mining and processing capacity of the mine and port site respectively, such that the full value of the process plant modification could be achieved.Capital payback on this investment was achieved in approximately three and a half months.This case study demonstrates the extra value to a mining business that can be achieved through fully understanding the mining/processing value chain and by careful targeted action to address critical bottlenecks in the processing chain from the mine through to the port site.CITATION:Akroyd, T J, Wynn, R and Costa, C, 2014. This paper presents an analysis on the dynamic adsorption of frothers and collectors onto air bubbles in flotation. The analysis was carried out using the theory on the surfactant transfer by diffusion and adsorption. The bubble size was considered when solving the diffusion equation for the dynamic surface excess. The adsorption kinetics was modelled employing the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and its extension with the inclusion of the lateral interaction of the adsorbed molecules (the Frumkin adsorption isotherm). The numerical computation was applied to solve the governing equations. The dynamic adsorption of the surfactants was measured in terms of the dynamic surface tension for sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and Dowfroth 250, using pendant bubble tensiometry. The results show that for air bubbles with diameter of the order of 1 mm, the bubble size effect on the dynamic surface tension is small and the solution of the diffusion equation for a planar gas-liquid surface can be used to describe the dynamic adsorption onto the air bubbles. The experimental data obtained with SDBS were well described by the Frumkin adsorption isotherm and the molecular diffusion. The model description for the experimental data obtained with Dowfroth 250 required the kinetic equations. The paper is relevant for further analysis of the role of the adsorbed surfactants in the particle collection.

The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, cenprises middle to high rank bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are presented:The seam is somewhat. disturbed and 'dissected by various structural features. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2, 000 ft in the presently, Worked area. Wide variations of seam thickness occur. Gradations of, rank occur from-place to place. Variations in seam gas content and pride variations in seam gas composition are experienced. Variations in coal strength occur. The influences of these factors on the occurrence of stress and gas phenanena in mining exploration are considered.

A 3050m long section of a 1.65m internal diameter tunnel is presently under construction in the Brisbane area by means of the pipe-jacking method. The soils along the alignment had been deposited in a deltaic/estaurine environment and rapid changes in soil type occur. The tunnel passes beneath several extensive bodies of surface water. Groundwater problems have been experienced with tunnelling through alluvial sands and gravels. Details of the ground conditions, the pipe-jacking method used and tunnelling experience are discussed in this Paper.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques can provide a useful tool to aid drill and blast engineers in open cut mining. By avoiding time consuming tasks such as scan-lines and rock sample collection for laboratory tests, MWD techniques can not only save time but also improve the reliability of the blast design by providing the drill and blast engineer with the information specially tailored for use. While most mines use a standard blast pattern and charge per blasthole, based on a single rock factor for the entire bench or blast region, information derived from the MWD parameters can improve the blast design by providing more accurate rock properties for each individual blasthole. From this, decisions can be made on the most appropriate type and amount of explosive charge to place in a per blasthole or to optimise the inter-hole timing detonation time of different decks and blastholes. Where real-time calculations are feasible, the system could extend the present blast design even be used to determine the placement of subsequent holes towards a more appropriate blasthole pattern design like asymmetrical blasting.

There are more than two million square kilometers of carbonate in China.Many water-bearing deposits are distributed in it.According to the karst shapes the surrounding karstic aquifers of mines can be divided into three kinds including solution fissure aquifer,karstic cave aquifer and underground stream (karst stream) aquifer. Underlier invasion is a main feature of karst water-bearing coal mine and upper tier incoming is a main feature of skarn copper and ferro mine.Swatlor pillar and collapse is a special feature of karstic water-impregnated mine.

The paper will review the marked upsurge in the installation of new continuous metal coating lines, both hot dip and electrodeposition. Although some of this new capacity has been replacement for obsolete facilities or directed at traditional markets, eg building products, consumer durables etc, by far the major portion is targeted at the automotive industry. The reasons for the rapid growth of coated automobile panels are discussed. A comparison of the installed capacity with projections for this market indicate that a severe over-supply situation has arisen. Many coatings are now available for the automotive industry, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but none as yet wholly satisfactory. Coating development has mainly been cost driven. This favours hot dipped coatings, providing surface quality and pressing problems can be overcome. The high cost per unit thickness of electrodeposited coatings has also seen pure zinc coatings being replaced by thinner, more corrosion resistant alloy coatings such as zinc-nickel and zinc-iron. Recently resin overlays have been introduced to improve the performance of electrodeposited coatings. Developments in coatings for the more traditional markets will be described. The fastest growing market in the last decade has been prepainted product for the building industry. This has led to the installation of extra painting capacity and again it appears an excess capacity situation has occurred. Over the same period the traditional zinc coatings have continued to lose market share to the zinc/aluminium alloy coatings, Galvalume and Galfan. These have been joined recently by '1'aiyo Crack-Free which has been taken up by some metal coaters. Galvalume is now widely accepted as being the best available coating for unpainted applications. It is also suggested that 'spin-off' coatings from automotive developments might find a niche in the consumer durable market. The end users of coated products, particularly the automotive industry, have demanded improvements in quality, such as surface smoothness, formability, etc. At the same time the new coating lines have to process wider strip and run at faster speeds. To reconcile these somewhat incompatible needs has required numerous process improvements, many of which need in-line instrumentation and computer control. The more important of these changes are discussed briefly. Finally the paper will describe the recent developments which have occurred in continuous galvanising in Australia and put them into context with the rest of the world.

The development of a softwood alternative to the hardwood chockpiece used to build the waste-edge breakers commonly incorporated in gateroad packs is described. The results of laboratory tests on softwood prototypes and two underground trials are presented. The results of the last trial suggest that a viable alternative chockpiece has been designed, offering advantages over availability of wood, weight and given reduced wood content, price.

Recognition is the most important aspect in the use of breccias as an exploration tool. Ore-hosting breccias occur in a wide variety of environ-ments, shapes, compositions and characteristics, but generally present favorable loci for the deposition of ore mineralization in epithermal, porphyry copper-gold-molybdenum, massive sulfide, carbonate-hosted, sedimentary lead-zinc deposits and others.

Design of cemented fill in mining is often carried out without any consideration of the structure of the fill. The composition of cemented fills varies in the stopes due to the placement method, and the strength of the fill in the laboratory depends on the density, orient- ation, moisture content and drainage conditions. Within each stope there are definite zones and the structure of both cemented rockfill and cemented hydraulic fill has to be defined for each zone and the field conditions simulated in the laboratory. Structure also affects fill permeability and compressibility. From a study of the cemented fill in place, the effect of changes in the placement methods can be seen and then controlled to improve fill performance and economy. These features of cemented hydraulic fill and cemented rockfill behaviour are discus- sed and illustrated through reference to field and laboratory work undertaken at Mount Isa.

Gold and copper mineralization in the Parkes area is hosted by a meridional sequence of Late Ordovician to Early Silurian igneous and sedimentary rocks on the central northern edge of the exposed Lachlan Fold Belt. The mineralized area straddles two zones separated in part by the Parkes Thrust and exhibiting different styles of deformation and mineralization (Figure 1). The western zone is characterized by gently folded rocks, with shallow dips and weak to non-existent axial plane cleavage. Faulting is restricted to directions oblique to bedding. Numerous occurrences of minor copper mineralization are known, but of recent national importance is the discovery of the Coradgery- Goonumbla porphyry copper-gold deposits by Geopeko Ltd. A resource in excess of 250 million tonnes has been delineated (Jones, 1985), and this represents the first porphyry deposit of sufficient grade and tonnage to be potentially mineable in New South Wales. The eastern zone is much more strongly deformed. Folding is tight with strongly developed axial plane cleavage. Faulting is abundant both parallel and oblique to bedding. Quartz veining is also abundant, and a narrow belt of gold mineralization adjacent to the Parkes Thrust stretches from Forbes in the south, through Parkes and Peak Hill, to Tomingley in the north. Over 31 tonnes of gold have been produced from this gold belt, mostly before 1914, and now three deposits show good potential for redevelopment - Peak Hill, and the London-Victoria and Lachlan lines of lode.

Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area.   Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization.   An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.
