Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa Mines' cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite clement program is described.

During induration of iron ore pellets produced from magnetite concentrates, there are many reactions occurring simultaneously. While the magnetite is being oxidised to hematite, carbonate fluxes are being calcined, leading to the formation of complex oxides. Calcination of fluxes and the formation of calcium and magnesium ferrites and silicates during the preheat stage can influence the magnetite oxidation process. As the calcination reaction proceeds quicker than oxidation at temperatures experienced during the preheat stage (700 - 1200¦C), the bulk flow of CO2 emanating from within the pellet should disrupt the diffusion of O2 to the magnetite reaction as the gas fluxes are similar in magnitude. This increases the time required for the oxidation of the pellet. Using an infrared rapid heating furnace, experiments were performed on heating individual magnetite green balls in an air atmosphere. These experiments showed that time played an important role in the extent of oxidation and calcination and temperature significantly influenced the initial evolution of high temperature phases such as magnesioferrite, calcium ferrites and calcium silicates. Understanding the kinetics of all these reactions for a particular pellet feed, and their interaction, is important for optimising the design of the induration furnace.

Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

The Waft River gold deposit is hosted by low grade metasediments which have been intruded by a dacite/andesite porphyry complex. Wafi River is classified as a high sulphur, epithermal type gold deposit having: a high sulphur content, a close association with calc-alkalic igneous rocks, zoned advanced argillic and argillic alteration, and enargite group minerals. Gold occurs as minute inclusions in pyrite and pyrrhotite within intermediate dickite/kaohnite - interlayered illitic clay alteration zones. Central leached silicic, alunite and pyrophyllite zones and peripheral chloritic zones are low in gold. The gold mineralisation at Wafi is interpreted to have been predominantly caused by mixing of hot upwelling acidic magmatic mineralised fluids with cool, neutral meteoric/hydrothermal fluids within permeable sediments. Locallised high grade breccia zones are encountered within the porphyry. An initial resource in excess of I million ounces Au has been defined.

In open cut gold mining at Mt Magnet and Reedy, grade control sampling is done with inclined RC drilling using one metre samples. In the small open cuts at Rothsay blasthole sampling was successfully used. Underground sampling for gold and copper grades at Rothsay is done using chip sampling. At the Youanmi open pits both Ditchwitch Earthsawing and RC drilling are used.All assay data are interpreted on sections and plans using a customised SURPAC system. Reconciliations of the grade control predictions of tonnes and grade against initial ore reserves, mining production and milling results are carried out monthly.

The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales. Polyurethane resin (PUR) is extensively used in almost all coal producing countries. On the local scene, PUR components suitable for underground application were selected and subsequently, trials were carried out at several coal mines. This paper describes the work at Pikes Gully Colliery (B.P.3Coal), where water flow rates of up to 4.5 m (1000 gallons) per minute, were reduced to 1-1.5 m /minute at the tirst stage of application. Subsequent trials were carried out at West Cliff Colliery (Kembla Coal and Coke). A variety of PUR chemical mixtures were tested in coal ribs and in the roof of intersections and roadways. The trial results are presented with all particular details. Using the PUR injection method, the roof, at the most difficult intersection, was stabilised and 'de-bonded' roof bolts were re-sealed. At Pikes Gully and West Cliff Collieries, 2 tonnes and 3 tonnes of PUR chemicals were injected, respectively. The technique, primarily based on German experience (Bergwerksverband), was used by Delta Control Systems Pty. Ltd. ACIRL was closely associated with the trials, which were monitored by installation of the measuring Stations.

The objective of this paper was to determine if recent advances in numerical electromagnetic wave propagation modelling techniques could be used to study the propagation of GPS signals over arbitrary terrain. Specifically the effects of diffraction and multipath were to be modelled accurately for propagation over arbitrary terrain surfaces defined by a digital terrain model. Ideally the model was to be in three dimensions and cover an area of a few square kilometres with a simulation height of a few hundred metres. Simulations were to run on current technology PC's with run times less than a few hours. A relatively new technique that involves a numerical solution to the Parabolic Equations can be used to solve for two-dimensional propagation over any type of terrain. The PE provides a direct solution of Maxwell's wave equations by approximating the Helmholtz scalar wave equation. This technique does not rely on the study of individual ray paths as used in the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). It was decided to develop a two dimensional Parabolic Equation code, using the Fourier Split/Step method that allowed propagation over arbitrary terrain (; ; ). The model boundary conditions assumed that the satellite transmission was a plane wave, and that the lower boundary was a perfect reflector. Propagation simulations from the model accurately provide the amplitude and phase of the propagated plane wave at all points within the model domain. The PE model was used to study the effects of diffraction and multipath caused by various types of terrain commonly found in an open cut mining environment. The study of diffraction errors was relatively simple, because we are simply concerned with amplitude of the signal as it diffracts about an obstacle. If the amplitude is above the level receivable by a GPS receiver then the diffraction error can be obtained from the geometry of the terrain obstacle. The study of multipath is more complex, as the computed phase from the PE model is ambiguous and the presence of multipath can only be inferred. Thus the absolute magnitude of the nmltipath error is not currently determinable, though the results of some new work is shown here. This paper shows that diffraction effects can cause significant errors in range. It also shows the effects that multipath has on the received amplitude of the signal and the received phase of the signal. A discussion is made of further work that is presently underway that will allow the direct determination of the multipath error by comparing the ambiguous phase with a reference phase.

Bacterial oxidation, previously known as bacterial leaching or bio-leaching, has been applied at laboratory and pilot plant scale to many refractory ores and concentrates around the world. The most common bacterial culture used in this process has been Thiobacillus sp. This organism is limited in commercial application, especially in Australia for several reasons. The optimum operating temperature range for this culture is 30¦C to 40¦C and high levels of some metals such as arsenic, silver, and copper have toxic effects on the culture thus reducing its effectiveness. The culture employed by BacTech (Australia) Pty lid is a moderately thermophilic culture which operates in a temperature range of 40¦C to 55¦C (which is more amenable to the Australian climate) and with higher resistance levels to metals often found to be toxic to Thiobacillus sp..

The paper studies the flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as: bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, respectively, using the new effective collector - H205 which has been developed by Baotou Research Institute of Rare Earth, and describes their flotation properties. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH values, Rare Earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium and calcium bearing intergrowth minerals (barite and calcite) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be successfully obtained by H205 as collector with water glass as depressant. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and reagent dosage on the flotation were investigated in the test. Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation separation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for H205 and RE cations by theorical analysis shows that H205 formed chelate complex with RE cations and adsorbed on the surfaces of RE minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by water glass can be explained as: H2Si03, HSi03 and gummy SiO2 hydrolised from water glass are selectively adsorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, under pulp pH value 8.5 to 9.5.

The opportunities offered by an increasingly volatile world invite the international consultant or engineering services contractor to broaden attitudes, diversify interests, expand capabilities, retain and develop specialist skills and base judgements upon sound principles and solid experience. The wide-ranging scope of this review reflects such a change but the topics of discussion are not intended to be exhaustive or to detract from many other current developments.The subject of environmental protection, effluent control and pollution prevention is a primary consideration in the application of many mineral processing technologies but is not covered here. There is an array of developments relating to noxious gas emissions and toxic wastes and the paramount importance of this matter justifies comprehensive conferences dedicated solely to the application of suitable measures. This review concentrates therefore on the main stream processing techniques for the primary recovery of values.

This paper describes the application of a three-dimensional finite element modelling tool to help assess the stability of a highwall at a Central Queensland mine following the weakening of its base due to highwall mining. With traditional stability assessment techniques, likely failure modes are identified on the basis of previous experience and structural, sedimentological and geomechanical data and a mechanistic analysis of these individual modes is performed. The value of the full three-dimensional model over these traditional techniques is that it provides a coherent approach to assessing highwall stability without the necessity of initially deciding upon the dominant failure mechanism and gives a useful adjunct to the traditional tools. The three-dimensional model assumes the rock mass is made of elasto-plastic blocks, incorporating possible planes of weakness, separated by near horizontal joints. The model includes the relaxation of stresses due to the excavation of the highwall and incorporates estimates of blast damage near the highwall surface

The Granites Goldfield is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs. Mineralisation was discovered in 1900 and intermittently worked along nine km of strike until the early 1950's, yielding a recorded production of 470 kg of gold. The geological environ- ment, pre-existing exploration drilling results, and an optimistic view on gold, prompted acquisition of the property by North Flinders Mines Limited in 1975. An agreement was signed with the Central Land Council in August 1983 and drilling commenced in the same month. In the past, gold was won from alluvial deposits, rich quartz veins and lower grade, disseminated stratabound mineralisation. The last is contained within a distinctive unit in the Mt. Charles Beds, of the Early Proterozoic Tanami Complex. This informally named "Host Unit" is a metamorphosed, chemical- pelitic sediment. The schist contains variable proportions of amphibole, quartz, garnet, clinopyroxene, carbonate and sulphide, inter- calated with recrystallised chert beds. Free gold occurs in several mineralised horizons within the Host Unit, generally conformably distributed within lithologic bands or at lithologic contacts. The Host Unit occurs within a sequence of metamorphosed pelitic sediments and intermediate volcanics. Although mostly confined to the Host Unit, stratabound gold mineralisation also exists in both Footwall and Hanging Wall Schists, usually within zones displaying certain Host Unit characteristics. The deposits may be loosely categorised as being of banded iron formation (bif) type, although some important differences are noted between them and classical bif type orebodies.

In 1997, the Australian coal industry through Standards Australia committee MN-001 Coal and Coke recognised the need to produce a Standard giving some instruction on how to inspect and audit mechanical sampling systems. A Guide was developed by sampling subcommittee MN-001-04 and in 1999 the Standard was released as AS4264.5 æGuide to the Inspection of mechanical sampling systemsÆ Coal and Coke. Since that time the author has assisted with other committees in developing the Guide for other commodities such as concentrates and a generic standard for particulate materials. (AS4433.6 released 2000). The Coal and Coke guide is also currently a work item for ISO Standards. This paper is focused primarily on auditing and inspection procedures for coal mechanical sampling systems. It highlights the need for at least a three level inspection protocol where the operators manning the system maintain operational checks, the operators are regularly supervised by the company managing the system and once per year an independent auditor inspects the whole system to ensure compliance with design and standards. It does not cover short- and long-term maintenance of individual systems. With companies already certified to the ISO9000 series, this guide forms the framework to bring the operation and inspection of their mechanical sampling systems into line with these principles.

This paper considers two particular empi- rical models for the processes of the generati- on of hydrochemical zoning and epithermal near- surface mineralization of mercury-antimony-arse- nic formation in the discharge area of the Uzon Caldera ore generating hydrothermal system in Kamchatka. Vertical and horizontal hydrochemical zo- ning is caused by mixture of infiltration waters of the surface formation with fluid of chloride- sodium composition which are supplied up the-zo- ne of deep fault. Ore formation is caused by simultaneous existence of two geochemical barriers, namely oxidizing and reductive. The first barrier is determined by the-level of ground waters. The second one forms under the clay-opal screen un- der the influence of two factors, namely the inflow of deep reduction sulphur compounds (which are transported together with arsenic, antimony and mercury) and the generation of hyd- rogen sulphide as a result of sulphur- and sul- phate reduction. X-ray-amorphous phase of orpi- ment composition and realgar phase are formed, respectively, on the oxidizing and reductive Barriers.

General Gold was discovered in quartz veins at Wiluna in 1896, and the first lode was discovered in 1904. Since 1896, some 2.5 million ounces of gold have been produced from the Wiluna area. The mining operations at Wiluna are 100 per cent owned by Wiluna Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiluna Mines Ltd. Oxide and sulphide gold ore is extracted by conventional open pit mining techniques, and ran-of-mine ore is processed through two separate circuits. The oxide circuit has a capacity to treat 600 0(X) tonnes per annum and the sulphide circuit has a capacity to treat 400 (XX) tonnes per annum. Additional gold is won by dump leaching sub-grade oxidised ore and by retreating of primary ore flotation tailings from previous operations. Testwork carried out in 1990 indicated the viability of leaching dumps of run-of-mine oxide ore, and in June 1991 Signet Engineering of Perth, WA, was awarded an EPCM contract to construct a nominal 2.5 million tonne dump leach facility, for a total construction estimate of 51.75 million.

Correct sampling practices are of vital importance to the mining industry; key decisions for the business are made on the basis of samples in all the value chain. Geology plays a relevant role in pre- and post-investment stages. Actually the understanding of natural variability is essential for geological modelling, geometallurgical modelling, mine planning, grade and process control. Improper sampling practices obstruct this objective introducing irrelevant variability components, which can cause monumental economic losses. A good approach to accomplish this understanding is the application of heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests, which are useful tools to quantify the variability of a certain well-delimited geological unit at different comminution scales. The application of heterogeneity test can help minimise Pierre GyÆs fundamental sampling error and to study the impact of other sampling errors. IngamellÆs test allows us to define the correct mass of sample for chemical analysis. This paper presents the results of several heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests done in Chilean porphyry copper deposits that belong to CODELCO Chile (Chuquicamata, Mina Sur, Radomiro Tomic, El Salvador, Andina and Teniente), in different geological units (endogenous oxides, exotic oxides, supergene sulfides and hypogene sulfides) and for several elements (Cut, Cus, Mo and As). These tests, considering the natural variability, have helped us develop accurate sampling protocols to minimise the fundamental error to acceptable levels. A major contribution of these tests (more than 30) is the generation of secure sampling protocols using the highest sampling constant obtained in the tests, for new porphyry copper deposits that donÆt have information given by heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests.

The large rotary blast hole drills for hole sizes of 250 to 375 mm in diameter have been utilized by large open pit metal and coal mines for production drilling all over the world. The design of such rotary drills is in most cases about two decades old and it has not been done much in order to apply a modern technology on rotary drilling. The most modern large rotary drill, Tamrock RI 10, consists of an advantageous rotary head with a squirrel cage AC motor controlled by a frequency converter, a beneficial mast structure with a possibility for inclined drilling, hydraulic driven, independent crawlers, and a modern ergonomic cabin to provide a comfortable working condition for the oper- ator. Several automatic features are available as options. The rig has been designed to be operated by one man only. With this modern rig the produc- tion rate can be increased and production cost kept on a low level.

Fires are a common and recurrent unwanted event in the operation of open pit mines. In most cases, the causes of events such as fires are already æknownÆ but are either overlooked or not fully addressed in planning. Ongoing rapid growth of the global mining industry is creating a scarcity of skilled personnel, and high turnover within operations. This contributes to loss of corporate memory in risk management activities. RISKGATE« is an online risk management system designed to support and assist in the analysis of priority unwanted events in Australian coal mining operations. Funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE« is a knowledge management program that delivers best-practice controls for unwanted events and assists operations in staying abreast of emergent risks and threats. RISKGATE« content has been primarily developed from an association of industry experts, and enriched with input from additional academic and technological resources. In mining operations, RISKGATE« provides a continuum of knowledge and best practice for risk identification, assessment and management. RISKGATE« will assist companies in improving safety performance, operational efficiency, operating practice and training. An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.
