The Channel Tunnel is an outstanding example of an undersea tunnel and its design illustrates most of the unique features of this type of tunnel. The marine site investigation was partic- ularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. To minimise this interference the time the drilling vessel was required to remain on station was kept to a minimum by expediting the drilling and the insitu tests as far as was practicable. To avoid additional unforeseen costs the contract documents were framed to take particular account of marine practice. The limited access at the coast line meant that for economy, maximum tunnel advance rates had to be attained. Ground excavation, handling and disposal methods and the provision of the lining were optimised and equipment specified in detail to ensure that no one com- ponent was delayed by a lack of capacity or mechanical failure in any other.

Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. Most of the operating steelmaking capacity currently relies on conventional, coal-based steelmaking processes. Currently, direct reduced iron (DRI) is only produced in regions where energy is available at low cost. To align with net-zero emissions goals, steelmaking capacity must transition to loweremissions steelmaking technology. Direct reduction of iron ore will get one of the preferred methods in the future due to its high technology readiness. New reduction technologies include hydrogenbased direct reduction processes. To ensure optimal efficiency during DRI production and to cope with newly developed technologies, processes need to be monitored more frequently and accurate. Traditionally quality control of raw materials and DRI has relied on time consuming physical testing, wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of DRI that defines its properties is not frequently monitored. Process monitoring and quality control of DRI is possible by using modern X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. In addition to the metallic iron content (Femet), metallisation (Metn) and the total carbon content (Ctot), XRD analysis also identifies the overall mineralogical phase composition. This allows additional information about the reduction process and enables fast counteractions on changing raw material mixtures. The benefits of the quantitative determination of the phase composition and the calculation of process critical parameters to produce DRI will be demonstrated with a case study

BolidenÆs Aitik mine, located 100 km north of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is one of EuropeÆs largest copper mines. This operation produces 18 Mt of ore per year and 99 per cent of this tonnage needs to be deposited as tailings. The tailings pond currently covers 1140 ha but at closure it will hold around 760 Mt of tailings and occupy an area of 1400 ha. The tailings contain less than one per cent sulfur and only 0.03 per cent copper. The carbonate content is as low as 0.25 per cent but silicates, with substantial accumulated buffering and metal adsorption capacity, are abundant. A programme of comprehensive material characterisation and investigations has been undertaken in order to design a decommissioning strategy that meets the regulatory requirements and secures long-term physical and chemical stability of the deposited tailings. The main concern has been the potential generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Standard tests using acid base accounting (ABA) and humidity cell tests during 15 weeks were not conclusive regarding the ARD generation potential. The accuracy of the results was considered to be unsatisfactory, therefore the humidity cell tests were gradually extended in time. In total, almost four years of humidity cell tests were conducted on various sets of samples which were selected in order to cover the variation in sulfide content existing on site and in various points of the milling process. The laboratory results were subject to detailed geochemical evaluation in order to fully understand the interaction between acid-producing reactions, driven by weathering of sulfides, and acid-consuming reactions by dissolution of carbonates and alumino-silicates. The laboratory tests were followed by both pilot tests and field measurements in order to estimate the scale dependency between the laboratory and the field results. It was found that sulfide weathering rates in the field were considerably lower than those measured in the laboratory. However, it could not be verified that the tailings top layer would maintain a neutral pH in the long term even under field conditions. Thus, a reviewed tailings management plan, including de-pyritisation of the tailings during the last years of operation, is considered.

This presentation discusses NASA-funded research on the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map diagnostic acid rock drainage (ARD) mineralogy that adversely affects water quality within watershed and to determine the relative contributions of natural ARD sources of metals and acidity to that drainage. Ground-based reflectance spectroscopy, combined with water chemistry, is used to identify mineralogical and chemical variations throughout a watershed. Integrated with hyperspectral data acquired from airborne remote sensing platforms, such as the NASA Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) sensor, a methodology has been developed that should improve environmental assessments and tracking of impacts on and from drainages. Phase I of this project focuses on a drainage basin (Lake Creek), tributary to the upper Arkansas River in central Colorado, which is impacted by natural acid rock drainage from areas of high-sulfide hydrothermal alteration. This project builds upon research and inventory efforts by the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) to identify hydrothermal alteration that is the primary source or is contributing to acidic and toxic drainage in Colorado. This presentation will cover ground and airborne hyperspectral remote sensing techniques and results and water analyses for seasonal high-flow and low-flow conditions in Lake Creek. Identifying correlations between mineralogy, especially mineralogy that can be identified through airborne remote sensing, and water chemistry is a key focus of this project. Of particular interest are low-pH iron phases such as jarosite, ferrihydrite, schwertmannite, copiapite, and transitional amorphous phases as well as AlOH phases from higher, although still acidic, pH environments which are observed to mix with the iron precipitates within the streams draining from the hydrothermal systems. Drainage in the Lake Creek watershed derives from the Grizzly Peak caldera (Oligocene), which exhibits extensive hydrothermal alteration. Alteration types include silicic, quartz-sericite, quartz-sericite-pyrite, advanced argillic, and argillic. By understanding the chemistry of a naturally impacted drainage and its relationship to the surrounding geology, the project goal is to allow more efficient and complete identification of such sources in mineralised terranes through remote sensing technology.

Gold mining is a major contributor to the South African economy, but is associated with several environmental issues such as acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is due to the oxidation of sulfides in gold tailings and is characterised by low pH, high sulfate content and elevated concentrations of heavy metals that contaminates scarce water resources and subsequently limits the use of such waters without treatment. Treatment strategies can only be implemented if the acid-generating potential of mine wastes is effectively predicted using common static and kinetic acid prediction tests. The choice of test performed is usually a trade-off between the number of samples, speed of the test, cost of the analysis and level of information obtained. Often the results of these various tests are not consistent with one another. This study uses mineralogy to analyse biokinetic test results of a Witwatersrand gold sample in order to improve the understanding of behaviour of mine wastes under different ARD prediction test conditions.All ARD prediction testing methods investigated in this study showed that the gold sample is considered to be potentially acid forming with net acid generation (NAG) pH of 2.5 and net acid producing potential (NAPP) of 36 kg H2SO4/t. Results of biokinetic test showed that ANC was consumed within four days confirming acid producing potential of the sample with low neutralising potential as observed from acid base accounting (ABA) (4.7 kg H2SO4/t) and mineralogy (4.9 kg H2SO4/t). Results generated in this study demonstrated importance of mineralogy in both understanding the controlling reaction mechanisms playing key role in ARD formation and its capability as a prediction technique. Given the ever increasing quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), one of the most challenging issues presently facing policymakers and public administrators in Italy concerns how to organise and manage collection and recycling and to understand whether and to what extent recycled aggregate can complement natural building aggregates in a sustainable supply mix (SSM). The paper presents the results of a research aimed at analysing energy and environmental implications of the C&DW recycling chain in the administrative territory of Provincia di Torino in northern Italy. In respect of a population of about 2.25 million inhabitants, the annual production of C&DW in the area under study is 1.8 Mt. A combined geographical information system (GIS) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model was developed, paying attention to the geographical location, land use, transportation network and avoided landfill: crucial issues for sustainable planning and management. Around 90 recycling plants were classified according to the size, typology (stationary, semi-mobile and mobile) and physical- mechanical characteristics of the recycled aggregate. Under different assumptions relevant to the delivery distance, and considering the typology and grade of recycled aggregate, as well as local availability of natural aggregates, it was possible to evaluate the geographical coverage of aggregates demand and to use LCA in order to identify and quantify energy and environmental indicators.

The original and most basic relationship between mining company and explosive supplier was a simple one of consumer and product supplier. The divide between the two was quite clear-cut with neither taking much interest in the activities of the other. The explosive supplier had little understanding or share in the outcome, efficient rock breakage and therefore impact on mining and milling. Likewise, the mining company did not encourage the improvement or development of products. The transactions were limited to product and funds. This environment does not encourage any form of knowledge sharing, trust or optimisation of the mining process.Conversely, there are now a variety of relationships to the point that the mining company may simply be an asset manager whereby all æoperationalÆ aspects are contracted out. For the drill and blast aspect this takes the form of a æRock-On-GroundÆ contract whereby the explosives company takes on design, drill, load and fire responsibilities and is paid a rate per volume of broken rock. This removes the majority of risk to the mining company derived from having to produce broken rock and guarantees the cost of a portion of the overall unit cost of mining. The onus is now on the explosives supplier to break rock to a specification as efficiently as possible.There exist a number of variations between the æbasic supplyÆ and æRock-On-GroundÆ. These contracts may also include value sharing to encourage the explosive supplier to optimise the mining operation to maximise profit.This paper looks at some of the drivers for the change in explosive supplierûconsumer relationships and examines the æprosÆ and æconsÆ of a few of the options.

Newmont Australia is the operator of the Mt Leyshon mine near Charters Towers, Queensland. Mt Leyshon is an open cut gold mine, which processed on average 5.0 Mt of ore and produced up to 250 000 ounces of gold per year. Mining was completed in early-2001, followed by treatment of low-grade ore stockpiles for a further 12 months. Approximately 250 ha of waste rock dumps have been rehabilitated. Rehabilitation of two of the three tailings storage facilities (TSF) has been completed and the third is in progress. A field performance monitoring system that includes an automated meteorological station, large-scale lysimeters (measurement of net percolation), and in situ moisture content sensors (measurement of moisture storage changes in the cover material) were installed to monitoring performance of the cover systems placed on the waste storage facilities. This paper focuses on the installation and calibration of the in situ moisture monitoring system. The moisture monitoring system provides automated detailed in situ volumetric water content data above and within the large-scale lysimeters. A portable unit that provides spatial in situ moisture content measurements at additional locations on the cover system is also utilised. The paper will focus on installation and calibration of the in situ water content monitoring instrument in the waste rock, coarse cover material, and fine textured cover materials of the tailings facility and waste rock dump cover systems.

There has been an ongoing research on coal and gas outburst for the past two decades at the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, University of Wollongong. Research study began with a humble beginning, initially conducting basic laboratory studies on the coal and gas properties, progressing into the determination of gas content of coal by sorption technique and the effect of gas pressures on coal strength. The present laboratory facilities and research interests are extended to include the study of coal permeability and shrinkage properties and their effect of gas drainage characteristics with respect to gas type, and pressures. All the changes are examined with respect to changing in-site geological conditions of the coal deposit investigated. The aim is to provide a long-term support to industry in establishing a data bank for Australian coal deposit characteristics and properties.

To respond to ever-increasing challenges, mining companies have been experimenting with new business models and technologies in order to speed mine development, production, processing and transport. The various experiments involve mobile access to data, intelligent sensors, advanced analytics, virtual collaboration, virtual reality, automated equipment, remote operations centres and strategic partnerships. A synthesis of all these components creates a ænetwork effectÆ that can dramatically improve the overall effectiveness the entire operation. The concept of the Network Centric Mine borrows from a variety of industries, including defence, aerospace, aviation, petroleum, utilities and manufacturing. Central to the concept are improvements to the way we connect people, process, information and technology, resulting in a more highly collaborative business model, with roles and processes designed to take advantage of new technology. The components of the mining operation act as a connected network aimed at a common goal, regardless of the boundaries of organisation and location.The design of this new organisational ecosystem needs to take into account the recent advances that enable the æplug and playÆ integrated collaborative environment, including cloud computing, mobile devices and social networking, as well as advances in augmented reality, robotics, geo-location, digital labelling, simulation and analytics. However, the most consistent lesson from other industries is the need to properly enable the behaviour and process changes necessary for success.Benefits from adopting a network centric approach include the more effective use of scarce expertise, improved data and information analysis, reduced process variance, and more informed and faster decision-making. The future of mining will see more technology savvy workers who will drive the adoption of new processes. Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along the Waiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of "platinum" were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS)and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni. R^~

High-nugget gold orebodies are difficult to model in 3D because samples from diamond drill core are generally too small to provide reliable estimates of the gold content of the larger body of rock, and therefore interpolation of gold assay values between drill holes is also unreliable. As a result, gold resources are generally underestimated in areas of high nugget. In practice, proxies for gold mineralisation, such as presence of alteration, specific structures or high vein density, have been used by geologists to predict rocks which are favourable for mineralisation. However, there has been no automated method for combining the predictive capabilities of several proxies, except by human judgement.We have been developing a method to combine several different types of geological features or geochemical analyses into a single measure using conditional probability. Conditional probability provides a meaningful numerical measure for the favourability of rocks for containing high-grade gold mineralisation. This measure can be interpolated in the exploration space, providing a sound basis for a 3D model of the orebody. Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.

Iron ore currently mined in Australia generally requires very little beneficiation. However, depleting high-grade resources means that in the future low-grade iron ore deposits will need to be mined to meet the increasing demands of the global steel industry. Along with the increased demand, the industry faces additional pressure to reduce the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing. This has stimulated research beyond incremental improvements to conventional processing into alternative low-impact processes, including biotechnological approaches to mineral processing.Bioflotation and bioflocculation have emerged as relatively recent technologies, in which bacteria and/or their extracellular material may be used as flotation reagents (collectors or modifiers), enabling improved selective separation of minerals. The primary advantage is the production of a selective, environmentally-benign alternative to conventional flotation reagents. A biotechnological approach may also be taken in the beneficiation of high-phosphorous iron ores utilising bacteria capable of iron reduction and phosphorous solubilisation.Samples from three iron ore deposits in Western Australia were examined for bacteria suitable for iron ore benefi ciation. A number of common soil microorganisms including Pseudomonas spp, Limnobacter thiooxidans, Paenibacillus spp, and Ralstonia insidiosa were identified using culture-independent molecular techniques. A number of anaerobic species belonging to the genus Clostridium were also identified in the core samples. Selected aerobic species were enriched and isolated on high nutrient media in the presence of haematite. Several of the isolated strains showed an affinity for iron ore, attaching to haematite in enrichment cultures and further demonstrated through adhesion studies. Other isolated species such as Ralstonia isidiosa and Pseudomonas stutzeri are known to solubilise rock phosphates in soils and have potential for the removal of phosphorous from Australian iron ores.

Despite the recognised importance of tailings management, there remain little data on the potential benefits of biological treatments compared with physical and chemical treatments. The operation of the majority of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continues to employ mainly physical solutions, such as sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition, with increasing adoption of thickening, paste and filtration to dewater the tailings involving the addition of chemicals such as flocculants and coagulants. However, with tailings production continuing to escalate rapidly due to the increasing demand for commodities and reducing ore grades, available technologies have not demonstrated cost-effective performance at high tailings production rates. This paper examines the emerging role of bacteria to better manage tailings, reducing risks and optimising storage capacity. Bacteria have the potential to enhance tailings dewatering, maintain their permeability, delay the onset of desiccation cracking, and improve their shear strength. Bacteria-treated tailings may be suitable for use as construction materials. Bacteria also have potential in limiting the dusting of tailings and facilitating rehabilitation on closure. The paper describes a series of laboratory involving the addition of harmless bacteria to a range of tailings. The bacteria form a compact material called calcite (a common and stable form of calcium carbonate), which immobilises the tailings particles, releases water, and cements the tailings in a stable and natural matrix. The water released can be recovered or evaporated, depending on site objectives. The bacterial reactions are linked to physical and chemical processes, providing the potential for an optimal mix of technologies for particular tailings and site conditions.CITATION:Cifuentes, H and Williams, D J, 2018. In order to improve the cutting blasting effect of dimension stone mining, the water coupling directional cutting blasting technology was put forward. Based on the test apparatus and special charge configuration, the mechanism of directional cutting blasting was analysed. Directional device changes the initial equilibrium of the total energy of shock wave effect on blasthole wall. The initial directional crack first appears in the blasthole wall that makes contact with the directional device. Then, two cracks are connected along the direction of the blasthole centre line under the action of detonation pressure and water wedge. The plexiglass tests showed that water coupling directional cutting blasting technology produced cracks along with the predetermined direction completely. The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. Metallurgical accounting is key to the control and production planning process of any mining operation. This is even more crucial for complex operations involving mining, concentration, smelting, refining and marketing. The tracking of multiple metal product and contaminant components through the operation can improve process predictability and inventory management. Appropriate use can be made of æhigh quality dataÆ for strategic reserve utilisation, mining operations, milling operations, etc. This information enables the optimisation of all aspects of the mining and processing operations. This case study discusses a metal balance implementation for WMCÆs Olympic Dam operations; a large integrated mining, concentration and refining operation, which used an existing off the shelf statistical data reconciliation package developed for the oil industry. It was extended to track and balance the metal co-products across the entire integrated mining, mineral processing and refining plant. The key benefits discussed are tight integration with existing data collection systems, formalisation of previously informal processes, and leveraging the development and support available for a widely used package. The project provided a solution for the site metallurgical balance spanning the mine and processing plant. The solution facilitates a bridge between the planning and production worlds, using a common data model across the site.

Knowledge of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites is very important for the development of the concept of biomineralisation and the creation of a scientific base for new biocompatible materials for medical purposes. The present work is devoted to research results on various synthetic and biological carbonate apatites obtained at Saint Petersburg University over many years. All-important problems will be considered such as the location of CO32- ions in the apatite structure, the ionic substitutions in various biological apatites and the development of synthesis methods for their analogues. Syntheses of apatites were realised by precipitation methods and under hydrothermal conditions (from solid compounds and by calcite treatment). Biological samples used in this study were physiogenic and pathogenic apatites formed in the human organism, eg in teeth and in renal and salivary stones and dental calculi as well as apatites from fossils of different taxonomic families (brachiopods, conodonts, fishes, reptiles, mammal) with different geological ages and burial conditions. The study of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites has been carried out by powder (including high-temperature measurements) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, IR-spectroscopy, thermal analysis and various chemical analytical techniques.
