Treating an ore blend from five different deposits at Newgold’s Peak Gold Mine (PGM) has always been a challenge due to the inherent variability between each of the orebodies.Operating the processing plant at PGM with a ‘normal’ level of process control and a good operations and metallurgical team has allowed the processing plant to achieve above the name plate design at 102 t/h and recoveries in the order of 92.8 per cent for gold and 88.4 per cent for copper.With a company value and culture of striving for continuous improvement, PGM implemented the Manta Cube® system, an advanced process control system, for the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, gold leach circuit and tailings thickener over a 12-month period throughout 2012 and 2013.The overall benefits of implementing the Manta Cube® system has led to an increase in mill throughput of at least two per cent, improved SAG mill liner life, a ten per cent decrease in cyanide consumption and a reduction in flocculant of at least 30 per cent with no detriment to the gold and copper recoveries.The entire project had a payback period of less than two months, and the combined benefits resulted in an overall increase in revenue of at least $5 million per annum. McKinnons open pit gold mine, located within the Cobar Basin in New South Wales, is characterised by complex mineralisation controlled by the intersection of steep faults in the hinge zone of an anticline. Resource estimation using indicator variography and indicator kriging was based on RC drilling on 25 in sections together with grade control RC drilling on 12 in by 12 in and 6 m by 6 in patterns. Rigorous sampling and checking procedures were used to verify the reliability of the drill hole data. Blast hole data was used to assist grade control in defining ore block boundaries.

Ore definition for final stope planning is often a challenging prospect in underground (UG) gold mines which exhibit high geological and grade variability. Unlike the grade control (GC) scenario in an open pit (OP), the ability for the mining geologist to plan a sampling campaign which effectively characterises the underlying mineralisation is fraught with difficulty. UG sampling patterns are strongly clustered and typically not dense enough to characterise the spatial and statistical properties. Very commonly, sample volumes are not large enough to provide a reliable grade estimate of the surrounding rock. These factors critically affect our ability to accurately map out ore positions and estimate metal quantities.At Sunrise Dam, traditional UG sampling and modelling techniques have proven to be an unreliable strategy for successful stope planning and extraction. The problem was first observed during the final cut-back in the open pit for which the mineral resource model was constructed from UG diamond drilling. Open Pit grade control reconciliations were strongly positive for both tonnage and grade compared to the resource model. Underground workings missed significant quantities of ore which was laterally defined by open pit reverse circulation (RC) GC drilling. Upon examination it was realised that the cause of the problem was one of inadequate sample density and sample support, the implications of which potentially affected the entire UG mine.As part of a broader study into underground grade control procedures, detailed reconciliation of initial stope production from the GQ domain also pointed to inadequate sampling as a major constraint to effective grade control and reserve conversion.To overcome this deficiency, dense 115 mm wet RC grade control drilling and conditional simulation modelling has been successfully implemented with the intent to replicate the grade control process in the open pit. The increase in sample density and sample volume has proven to be a very effective tool for mapping out highly complex mineralisation. A marked improvement in stope definition, reserve conversion and Mine to Mill reconciliations has been demonstrated on the back of an innovative approach to UG grade control.CITATION:Clark, F and Carswell, J T, 2014. While in some cases it is vitally important to measure the virgin stress in rock prior to tunnelling there are a number of cases where such stress measurement is really not required. The concept of having to have a number to put in a numerical model representing a continuum is often quite inappropriate. This paper discusses the cases when virgin stress measurement is required and the most appropriate means to measure it. The techniques discussed cover all of the overcoring systems, hydrofracture and borehole breakout measurements. It also covers the use of rock surface stress measurement, which is easy to perform and should be used to check for changing stress conditions. Unfortunately this technique has been ignored in recent times because engineers are addicted to numerical models requiring far field stresses rather than measuring the real values that exist where they matter – at the tunnel wall. A case is presented in which the measurement of surface stress in a tunnel boring machine tunnel enabled the far field stress to be determined in what must be the world’s largest overcore.CITATION:Gray, I, 2014. A survey is made of changes in the technical status of a number of western world copper extraction and refining operations over the past 20 years. Specific developments in pyro- and hydro-metallurgy and refining practices are identified together with factors in the changing environment of the industry which has influenced their adoption. Nickel extraction and refining is similarly discussed.The replacement of traditional technology by more attractive alternatives has occurred in a considerable number of operations. The develop-ment and status of new continuous smelting processes, advances in hydrometallurgy and refining innovations which emerged during the 1960s and early 1970s is discussed. The varying experience in commercial acceptance of these new technologies is noted.Finally some possible future directions are canvassed for both operators and the research and development institutions.

Kanowna Belle Gold Mine is a deep, high-stress, sublevel open stoping mine located near Kalgoorlie. Seismic activity during the development cycle presented problems, including concerns regarding the exposure of personnel. A number of seismic management systems were developed and tested to monitor seismicity and control the risk. It was recognised that a dynamically capable reinforcement and support system was required to be installed as part of the development cycle to reduce the risk of exposure of the underground workforce to uncontrolled movement of rock. The performance of a new Garford Dynamically capable bolt was measured in tests performed by the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) at their Kalgoorlie Dynamic Test Facility. Detailed descriptions of the facility and data processing were reported by Player, Villaescusa and Thompson (2004) and Thompson, Villaescusa and Player (2004). The development of the Garford Dynamic bolt is described and dynamic testing results are presented and evaluated. This bolt was implemented in the mining cycle following the testing program; the observed performance is described and assessed in this paper.

The growth in production of beneficiated ilmenite products has been one of the most significant trends in the titanium feedstock industry over the past 30 years. In this period, the production of titanium slag and synthetic rutile has grown five-fold to the point where these products represented 56 per cent of total feedstock production in 2000. Additional production capacity is being proposed as the core component of new feedstock supply projects presently under consideration. A high proportion of these products is based on technologies for which the inherent quality of the is an essential factor. Location specific factors also play a large part in determining the cost of production. As the demand for such products grows, and the availability of favourably located sources of ilmenite of suitable quality declines, it can be expected that existing beneficiation technologies will become increasingly constrained. Existing beneficiation technologies, and those which have been developed, but are not yet commercially applied, are reviewed. Future issues which are likely to impact on the cost effectiveness of these technologies, or the quality of final products, are identified. These factors suggest directions for development of ilmenite beneficiation technologies to achieve economic production of the quality of feedstocks which will be demanded by the TiO2 pigment industry in the future.

In the first half of 1987 two four metre diameter raise bore holes were drilled at the Olympic Dam Project for ventilation purposes. The first hole, 476 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 96 days, 35 days longer than scheduled. The second hole, 407 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 39 days, 2 days ahead of schedule. Both holes were drilled with a Robbins 121R rig using a Wirth head that consisted of 23 face cutters and 5 side cutters, supplied by a contractor. After the sites were located a grouting program was carried out to help seal off an aquifer between 160 and 180 m below the surface. Cavities discovered in the Andamooka Limestone were filled with concrete. Because of the overlying dune sands and clay both sites were pre-sunk to the competent Andamooka Limestone.

The Que River and Hellyer polymetallic massive sulphide ore bodies are located 3 kilometres apart in the Cambrian Mount Read volcanics of Western Tasmania. Both deposits are classic examples of the Kuroko volcanogenic style. Base and precious metal rich hydrothermal solutions rose through a deep fracture system and vented on the sea floor, causing sulphides to accumu- late in adjacent topographic lows. Together the preproduction geological resource is approximately 23 million tonnes at greater than 18% zinc plus lead, with economically significant silver and gold. Exploration by Aberfoyle in the Mount Read volcanics com- menced in 1970. Que River was discovered in 1973 following a comprehensive data review, a regional stream geochemical survey and a helicopter-borne electromagnetic survey. Production began in 1981, and the mine is currently producing 300,000 tonnes per year. The ore is sold to the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Aus- tralasia Ltd mill at Rosebery. Ten years of extensive geological mapping, soil geochemistry, and induced polarisation, combined with continual study of the Que River orebody and its host rocks, formed a strong frame- work for the discovery of the Hellyer deposit, which was found as a result of drilling .a subtle time domain electromagnetic anomaly in 1983. Hellyer is currently being mined at a rate of 250,000 tonnes per year, with the ore being concentrated at Aber- foyle's converted Cleveland tin mill. Treatment of 1 million tonnes per year will begin in early 1989 at a new mill located near the Hellyer site.

This paper describes model-scale bench blasts on mortar blocks with distorted drill hole patterns, done in 2013–2014 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The main aim of the project is to see if the fragmentation from and the crack development behind blasts with and without drill hole deviations differ significantly.The dimensions of the test blocks were 660 × 280 × 210 mm (L × W × H). They were mounted inside a yoke that allows the blast waves to escape (see Figure 1). Three rows in each block were shot row by row with a nominal pattern of B × S = 70 × 95 mm. The same nominal delay 73 µs (ie 1 ms per m burden) between holes was used throughout. Blocks with holes of stochastic collar position errors (variations in burden or in burden and spacing but constant row volume) and systematically shifted collar positions (blasts with staggered pattern) were shot. The results were compared to reference blocks without collar deviations.Apart from the sieving analysis, the remaining bench faces were measured with a stereo-photogrammetric method and horizontal roughness profiles for each row were constructed. Sawing slabs from block remains after the third row and use of dye penetrant allowed the study of internal blast damage.The analysis showed that none of the changes in borehole collaring had a significant effect on the sieving curve (median). The sieving results confirm earlier findings though that the fragmentation gets finer with the number of rows shot, implying that blast damage from earlier rows has an influence on the blasting results. The tests demonstrated that the nequiv (equivalent n-value) has increased ten per cent by shooting staggered pattern and decreased by seven per cent by pattern with burden and spacing errors. For the rest of the patterns, the nequiv was roughly the same.The surface roughness investigation showed that a smooth surface was achieved by the staggered pattern. The other deviations patterns did not show a clear trend.The internal blast damage, which was measured in the remaining part of blocks, showed that out of eleven, four crack families seemed to be most affected by blasting. The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. From 2003 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A major focus of the investigations is developing strategies to maximise the beneficial use of the limestone that will be mined. Laboratory columns and field test pad investigations have been ongoing for six years examining limestone blends. Trial dumps utilising truck placement and conveyor/stacker placement and blending of limestone and acid generating rock have recently been constructed. In addition, based on initial results, investigations aimed at further evaluating the performance of limestone covers in this high rainfall environment have commenced. A significant finding has been the identification of strong armouring layers on sulfide surfaces within well-blended material and under limestone covers. These layers effectively isolate sulfides and thus progressively slow the oxidation rate to a level where the alkalinity load from the limestone exceeds the rate of acid generating. ARD is controlled and neutral low metal drainage results. The results have demonstrated that although limestone blending is effective, it is necessary to ensure that all size fractions within the blend receive adequate acid neutralising capacity to buffer the potential acidity. Because the sulfur content generally increases and the acid neutralising capacity decreases with decreasing particle size in limestone blends, the amount of limestone required greatly exceeds the stoichiometric requirement. This paper describes the development of limestone blending specifications for potentially acid forming overburden and presents the results of the ongoing limestone cover trials at the Grasberg mine.

Robertson Diasol have developed a spectral gamma-gamma tool fully able to withstand borehole conditions. Spectral data is digitally recorded across 256 channels depending on energy levels of the photoelectric effect. Data processing is being developed with the objective of calibrating channel amplitudes to mineral type which will lead to a direct log of selected mineral grade as a continuous trace with depth.

The iron ore district of Gol-e-Gohar (GEG) is located 60 km south-west of the city of Sirjan, in the Kerman Province of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Six exploration targets have been identified and iron ore has been mined from one area with dry and wet concentrate products sold. Prior to mining commencing in 1999, the proven reserves were estimated at 265 million tonnes (Mt) in 2004 and 40 Mt of 100 Mt overburden has since been mined. Of the six exploration targets, the largest anomaly in the GEG district is Deposit No 3. This paper discusses economic considerations focusing on mine extraction and construction of a concentration and pelletising plant to process ore from Deposit No 3 of GEG. Planned capacity of 10 Mt product (concentrate and pellet) per year is targeted to commence in 2011, and nominal capacity by 2014. The economical evaluation and analysis is one of the most important stages in the feasibility study of mine development. Financial calculations including the provision of financial resources, operation period revenue, loss and profit statement, cash flow, net cash flow, internal rate of return and net present value have been undertaken as part of the feasibility study. The feasibility study operating plan assumes a large open pit mine containing proven reserves of approximately 250 Mt. The feasibility study assumed an economic return of $80 per tonne iron pellet. The economic study determined that Deposit No 3 of GEG can be economically developed by open pit mining followed by magnetite separation and flotation to generate iron concentrate and pellets.

Testing of in situ seals in underground coal mines is critical to determine seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions. In the wake of the 2006 Sago Mine explosion, the United States of America (USA) promulgated the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act (USDOL, 2006) which required mines to install 827 kPa (120 psi) rated seals or monitor and maintain the atmosphere behind existing 345 kPa (50 psi) seals. The purpose of developing the regulations was to prevent the breaching of seals in the event of an explosion in the sealed area.While seal design and construction is carefully regulated in practice, the construction of seals is difficult to monitor, as many are constructed under various mine conditions and the methods rely on prescribed placement of the seal material. Further examination of installed seals is limited to two-dimensional visual inspection and atmospheric and convergence measuring devices. These methods do not accurately reflect the integrity of the seal and cannot detect changes, deterioration, or defects within the seal.If detection of defects, deterioration and damage is not possible, unexpected communication between the active and sealed areas may result. Additionally, the ability of the seal to withstand explosions may be compromised. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of underground mine seals is necessary to investigate if the seal properties have been altered and if the seal remains functional as a barrier between active areas and sealed areas of the mine. A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

Background BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd is one of the major iron ore producers in the Pilbara Region of North Western Australia. The company manages three separate joint ventures; the Newman, Goldsworthy and Yandi joint ventures and two 100 per cent owned operations, Yampi and Jimblebar. The Newman operations constitute a mine site at Newman and a 426 km railroad to Port Hedland where there is an ore processing/port site. The Goldsworthy operations currently constitute a mine site at Shay Gap/Nimingarra, a developing mine site at Yarrie, a decommissioned mine site at Goldsworthy and an ore processing/port site at Finucane Island (Port Hedland). The Yandi operations include mining and processing facilities at site and a spur line to join the Newman Hedland railroad. Jimblebar operations are scree and bedrock mining near Newman and include mining, processing and a spur line to Newman where it joins the Newman-Hedland railroad. The Yampi operations constitute a mine/port site at Koolan Island (which is presently being decommissioned). The combined BHP Iron Ore operations produce approximately 46 Mtpa of iron ore. This paper will concentrate on the processes developed and applied for the decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site. The Goldsworthy site is on the northern boundary of the Pilbara Region and adjacent to the western extremity of the Great Sandy Desert. It is located approximately 110 km east of Port Hedland (see Figure 1). The area is generally of low relief with isolated low ranges. The mine site being within the Mount Goldsworthy range area. The geology of the area is essentially Archaean granite with Archaean banded iron formation becoming dominant within the ranges. The chief soils are hard alkaline red soils. The vegetation is essentially shrub steppe with the main hummock grass species being spinifex (Triodia sp). The climate for the region is semi arid tropical. The temperature ranges from a mean low of 15¦C in winter to a mean high of 40¦ in summer. Rainfall is episodic, occurring mainly throughout the summer as a result of tropical depressions or cyclonic activity. The average annual rainfall is approximately 300 mm and annual evaporation may exceed rainfall by up to 2500 mm. Goldsworthy Mining Ltd commissioned the Goldsworthy site in 1965/66. Goldsworthy was the first iron ore operation and associated town site in the Pilbara region. The mine development peaked in 1977 with the town population reaching 1400 people. In 1982 mining ceased and the mining operations were relocated to Shay Gap, 80 km east of Goldsworthy. The Goldsworthy town continued as the base for the railing operations between Finucane Island and Shay Gap. BHP Minerals acquired Goldsworthy Mining Limited in 1990. The population for the town of Goldsworthy at this stage was around 450 people. An assessment of the Goldsworthy site operations concluded that it was uneconomic to continue the operation of the site. The decision was made to transfer the base for railing operations to Port

Application of ore pre-treatment technologies such as Grade Engineering and in-pit ore treatment require comprehensive analysis to show proven value is being generated by switching away from the current practices. Considering most mining operations last several decades; the pre-treatment technologies must be investigated over life of mine (LOM) to truly show value was generated or lost. Therefore, a value chain flowsheet model has been usually developed to run those analysis/simulations over LOM using a set of defined ore characteristics and the operating equipment capacities. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) has been used for this type of LOM simulations as it has the necessary flexibility to accommodate the whole mining value chain flowsheet in one platform and provide essential computation power to run mass simulations for the given scenarios using the resource block model. This allows to forecast the value chain response over the LOM for all given scenarios in a feasible amount of time. The traditionally developed flowsheets for the analysis/simulations are usually limited to the mineral processing plant and were developed based on a single audit conducted on the plant in a very short time, e.g. several hours. The process plant is being operated with a certain ore at a certain condition during the short audits which would not reveal the true capacity of the operation equipment when ore characteristics changes. Therefore, it would be impossible to define the true capacity of the equipment and identify the constraints along the value chain. In this study, a methodology was developed to identify the constraints along the value chain and implement those in the IES flowsheet using process information. Also, the equipment models were fine-tuned to represent the true capacity of the equipment in the flowsheet using the same data set. The methodology was tested over five process plant in two operations and showed the performance forecast was significantly improved over the traditional methods being used so far. Then those high-fidelity flowsheets were used to evaluate the ore pre-treatment technologies proposed by the relevant resource company experts.

Coal mining ceased at Strongman Mine this year after 70 years of production. Underground mining finished in 2003 and opencast methods began in 1998. During the life of the mine, 8 million tonnes of coal was extracted from two underground mines and 1.2 million tonnes removed through opencast methods. Strongman Mine is within the Grey Coal Fields; various seams have been extracted from the Rewanui Coal Measures. Coal extracted was predominantly of thermal or semi-soft specifications and characterised by low sulphur and low ash.   The area has steep topography, high rainfall (>3000 mm/yr) and is particularly exposed to westerly quarter winds. Strongman 1 and 2 underground mines are located in the steep, narrow valley which leads to the Strongman Opencast at the top of the valley. Subsidence from underground mining combined with spontaneous combustion, has resulted in an underground fire which has had substantial surface effects. Opencast mining in the steep topography resulted in several landslides at the perimeters of the site. These factors, along with water management, topsoil management and erosion control have added to the complexity of rehabilitating the site.   Rehabilitation of the site is well underway, including infrastructure removal, final landform creation and revegetation of the Strongman Opencast footprint (~45 hectares). Some innovative methods of rehabilitation have been trialled. Successful trials such as helicopter-seeding and moss hydro-seeding on highwalls are now routinely used along with traditional revegetation practices. 18 hectares disturbed land has been replanted with 88 000 seedlings, and another 200 000 seedlings are scheduled for planting over the three years. Fire management is an ongoing challenge; however thermal photography shows a steady decrease in hot areas which have been contained by grout curtains.   Mine closure is some time away and will occur after all standards set by Solid Energy and regulatory bodies are achieved.

Paste back-fill technology is gaining rapid acceptance in the Canadian mining industry. The authors were able to work on four different mining sites employing paste technology in their operation. In each site the paste hackfll is prepared with very fine tailings containing significant amounts of sulphur minerals. The research program involved laboratory testing on samples prepared in the laboratory, on control samples obtained at the hackfilll plant during pouring into the stopes and on core samples obtained from drilling in backfilled stopes. The laboratory testing provided detailed knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the paste backfill. The need for a means of measuring the in-situ mechanical properties of the backfill became clear. A review of various trials published in literature and an evaluation of available technology suggested the Cambridge Self-boring Pressuremeter. A first field campaign confirmed the efficiency and dependability of this instrument leading to the conclusion that it offers a very good method for the in-situ measurement of paste backfill properties.

The Tropicana Gold Mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% owned and managed) and Independence Group NL (30%) is located 330 kilometres east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, Australia, in the newly developed Albany-Fraser Orogen. Following extensive feasibility studies, a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball milling circuit was selected based on the reduced power requirements and thus reduced operating expenses. The HPGR-ball mill circuit was estimated to require 75% of the energy of a standard semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit. Even with an anticipated greater capital cost, the HPGR-ball mill circuit was found to give significantly better financial returns in all cases investigated in the feasibility study. A comparison between the specific energy requirements of the HPGR, crush and SAG based circuits (SABC) from the feasibility work was conducted and the HPGR circuit was found to be considerably more energy efficient. A survey was conducted and the efficiency of the HPGR was similar to both the overall circuit design and the HPGR laboratory results, reflecting the accuracy that is possible for design and operation of HPGR circuits.Between 2015 to 2016, the Tropicana circuit has achieved a 20% increase in throughput from 780 to 930 t/h, and this increase has been maintained in 2017. This improvement can largely be attributed to upgrades to material handling processes, increased HPGR speed and smaller HPGR screen apertures.
