Accurate sampling of slurry streams is extremely important for metallurgical accounting in mining operations, not only for measuring the ore grade from the mine, but also for measuring the recovery of mineral by the mineral processing plant. Accurate sampling is also required for intermediate streams in complex circuits for determining efficiencies of processing units within the plant. As the profitability of the minerals industry is squeezed more with time, greater emphasis is being placed on efficient use of the resource and accountability of the various sections of the mining operations. This has led to increased awareness and interest in obtaining statistically correct sampling across the operations. Accurate sampling is not only required for metallurgical accounting, but is also required for on-line analysis of the slurry streams for elemental analysis and for particle size. Sampling of slurry streams for metallurgical accounting purposes has traditionally been one of the areas of concern in mineral processing plants. In the first instance, the sampler must be designed to comply with the fundamental principles of sampling theory and must provide a representative sample of the slurry stream. In the second instance, the sampler must continue to reliably provide a representative sample, regardless of wear of the equipment or build up of solids with time and other operating issues. To-date the main type of sampler that has been used in mineral processing plants for metallurgical accounting has been the Cross-Cut sampler. These have a cutter that periodically cuts across the full slurry stream. For large flow slurry streams, these are often followed by a secondary and perhaps a tertiary sampler, to reduce the flow-rate or sample, to a manageable size. This paper discusses a new method of sampling slurry streams that has been developed by Thermo Gamma-Metrics, previously known as Amdel Instrumentation. The new samplers overcome many of the problems associated with cross-cut samplers while providing a sample which is representative of the main stream, throughout the life of the sampling system. The sampler is called the SamStat (Sampling Station) and it is now proven in many applications across many countries and mineral processing plants (PGMs, Cu/Au, Pb/Zn, etc).

An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.

BechtelÆs Mining and Metals projects across the globe are executed in remote arid and semi-arid countries where providing even basic water supplies impose considerable challenges. Opportunities for water conservation measures using a Six Sigma initiative were proactively pursued to address the potential business impacts of limited availability of water resources. The initiative investigated areas driving water-optimisation during concrete operations and camp management. This paper details the water conservation evaluation of alternatives and cost/benefit analysis based on current and predicted water usage for development projects. Optimisation of water consumption through institutionalising more prescriptive standards for camp design and defining water conservation requirements have resulted in a new standard specification. Based on our projected mining project workload across the globe, it is estimated that for the period 2012 - 2015, a potential 5.5 M m3 water savings resulting in US$11 M could be realised for construction camps and savings of 4 M m3 of peripheral concrete process water resulting in potential cost savings of US$8 M could be achieved as a result of these revised standards.CITATION:Haase, T, Hannah, B, Ganapathi, G, Martin, L, Madore, C, Labarca, F and Uriarte, M, 2013. Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile has been conducting detailed assessments investigating value adding options for their asset. The mine has conducted several detailed Mine-to- Mill and Grade Engineering studies to investigate increased throughput and head grade and to quantifying the impact of these approaches across the life of mine. CRC ORE has two key technologies namely Grade Engineering and the Integrated Extraction Simulator. These two technology suites have been combined to understand the technological landscape and associated value drivers suitable for application at Los Bronces. Detailed ore characterisation test work was conducted to:  measure and spatially model the propensity of ores to naturally deport and  develop customised blast models for Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering evaluation The outputs of this work were utilised to develop a block model populated with a range on new Grade Engineering and blasting parameters suitable for scenario analysis. To facilitate scenario analysis a high-fidelity value chain model of the Los Bronces operation from blasting to concentrate production was built in IES. IES was combined with sophisticated analytical tools such as Neural Networks to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model made it possible to simulate in IES all available blocks in the block model to predict throughput and grade changes for different strategic scenarios. The scenario analysis was run across 24 strategic combinations of Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering and comprised several million simulations. The scenarios investigated each technology independently and jointly to provide an attributed block model that can feed forward into technoeconomic modelling to determine optimal execution strategies for the mine. This paper presents the first published study combining Grade Engineering and IES to provide mass simulation capability to investigate strategic options for a mining asset.

Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.

DML Resources Limited - Mining Division produced over 50 000 oz of alluvial gold in the 1995 - 1996 year from five operations located in the West Coast and Otago Regions on the South Island of New Zealand. DML Resources Limited - Mining Division have a twenty year history of alluvial gold mining development in New Zealand. Recent expansions have seen the establishment of two operations in Chile whilst exploration continues in Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. The overseas growth is based on a stable production base in New Zealand focussed on the West Coast and Southland/Otago present and future operations. DML Resources consider that the mining potential in the Arahura Valley on the West coast will be fundamental to their New Zealand operations for some time. Collectively the plants operating in this catchment are referred to as the Poutini Project. Recent and late Pleistocene gravels derived from the erosion of the Alpine Schists running parallel to the Alpine Fault located on the Pacific/Australian Plant boundary are thought to be the sources of the alluvial gold in the Arahura and adjacent catchments. These gravels have been extensively mined for the past 130 years yielding some six million ounces over this period. Production from the Poutini Project started in 1989 and stood at approximately 35 000 oz for the 1995 - 1996 year. This production was split among three plants each working different areas of the deposit. Recovery techniques from each of the plants are fundamentally the same. Gravels are fed to a floating treatment plant where, following screening, the gold is recovered using jig plants and knudsen bowls. Overburden to wash stripping ratios vary between zero and seven to one with plants treating between 80 and 250 cubic metres per hour. Restoration of the land following mining is undertaken progressively. All land in the Poutini Project area mined to date has been restored to a standard suitable for dairy farming purposes. The Poutini Project is a cooperative venture between the Maori landowners and DML Resources Ltd. The Arahura River has particular cultural significance to the Maori as it is the source of the much valued greenstone or pounamu a type of jade valued for jewellery and tools. The Poutini Agreement was signed in 1989 setting out the role of each party in the mining of the Arahura and adjacent lands. Current exploration and development should extend the resource to allow mining to continue on the Poutini project for an additional three to five years at current gold prices. Production within new Zealand beyond this point may be compromised by increasing difficulty in gaining access to prospective areas within New Zealand, lowered margins due to high New Zealand dollar exchange rates and the overall lowering of alluvial headgrades throughout the West Coast and Otago/Southland regions. To counter these effects DML has continued to improve on operational efficiency and performance monitoring to optimise the mining practices used. This paper detains the background to the Poutini Project, the geology, plant and equipment used together with descriptions of the current mining methods employed.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

Strain-type rockbursts, or strainbursts, are characterised by a localised violent failure. Their cause is attributed primarily to the sudden release of strain energy, which accumulates in a volume of highly stressed rock as a result of mining activities. Examples of such phenomena are crown/sill pillar bursts created in the mining process, pillar crush in room-and-pillar mining, face ejection in drift development headings at depth, and floor bursts associated with deep shaft sinking. The paper describes a simple method for the assessment of crown pillar bursts in steeply dipping ore deposits which are extracted by the overhand cut-and-fill method. The method is based on a theory previously established by the author to help assess the need for a remedial solution such as pillar destress blasting. Basically, the mining-induced energy storage rate (ESR) in the pillar is compared with the critical strain energy to come up with the so-called burst potential index (BPI).

THE de-silverizing of base bullion at the Port Pirie works is carried out in accordance with the principles of the well-known Parkes process. The base bullion produced by the blast furnace department carries (apart from silver values) impurities, the chief of which are copper, antimony, and arsenic. In order to more clearly indicate the grade of the base bullion, the following analysis, representative of a half-year's production of base bullion, is submitted...Before proceeding with the actual operation of de-silverizing, it is necessary that the impurities, copper, antimony, and arsenic, should be eliminated. This is accomplished in the following steps :- (1) Removal of Coppel - Copper is largely present in the base bullion as dissolved sulphide, and this is removed by liquation in a reverberatory type furnace, of which the following are the essential details :-Working temperature 7500 to 8500 C.Coal consumption per 24 hours 2 tons.The hearth of the furnace is encased in a steel tank 22 ft. 4 in. long by 13 ft. 4 in. wide by 2 ft. 10 in. deep; the bottom of the tank is covered by a depth of composition conforming to the invert :-Cement 39 cwt.Brick dust 8.4 tons.Fireclay 0.6 tons.Sand 0.6 tons...

The Pine Creek gold mining development consists of a 1000000 tonne/yr open cut mine, a carbon-in-pulp processing plant and support facilities. The operation is located at Pine Creek, 230 km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The mine was officially opened in late October 1985, having been designed and constructed in less than twelve months, despite front end expenditure constraints and unseasonal cyclonic rains shortly after commencement of site activity. Non-traditional methods and attitudes were required to be adopted by both Engineer and Owner to successfully bring the project from preliminary design through construction and commissioning in a minimum time. Those areas which differ from the more traditional approaches to Project Management are examined together with a review of the advantages and penalties of these methods.

The segment of the Upper Cenozoic volcanic chain (CVZ) located on the western border of South America (16-28¦S lat.) is constituted by an association of strato- volcanoes and ignimbrite sheets, with high K calco-alkaline affinities. Strata-bound volcanoes, mainly of andesitic and dacitic composition, present along the whole chain, and various hydrothermal alteration zones, on the slopes and in the cores of eroded volcanic structures. Some of these altera- tion zones bear epithermal precious metal ores and sulphur deposits, which at present are being exploited. The studied Salar de Gorbea area, located in the Andes of northern Chile (25-26¦S lat.) contains a numer- ous group of Miocene to Quaternary stratovolcanoes, with advanced argillic and extreme silicification hydrothermal alteration in their cores and on their slopes, favoring the formation of great volumes of alunite within altered zones and sulphur deposits in the higher parts of the volcanic edifices. Simultaneously, siliceous hydrothermal breccia of the phreato-magmatic type, with evidences of hydromag- matic explosions are recognizable, allowing, in some cases, the ascent towards the surface of rock fragments belonging to the Paleozoic pre volcanic basement. Radiometric ages obtained in some of the hydro- thermal alteration zones (K-Ar in alunite) are slighty young- er than the unaltered rocks which constitute the strato- volcano. Trace element (Hg, As, Sb, S, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo) patterns in orientative rock samplings show that the studied alterations zones correspond to high sectors of the cpithermal system, without evidences of metallic minerali- zation on surface. The weak erosive action due to the ex- tremely and climatic conditions in this segment of the Andes, has not allowed the cropping out of deeper areas of the hydrothermal alteration zones, in contrast to other Miocene more eroded volcanic edifices and Miocene vol- canic terranes of the Andean Range.

The Obuasi Mine has been in operation for the past 100 years. Within this period a host of mining methods have been employed during its various changing phases. The causes for the changes are multiple, ranging from orebody capability, dynamics, technology, safety, economics, production levels, geotechnical, etc. Mining methods applied have also ranged from timber square setts, conventional cut-and-fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel caving, mechanised cut-and-fill, longitudinal and transverse open stoping, and lately longitudinal retreat mining method (LRMM).The Obuasi Mine has a world class underground resource potential of about 27 million ounces. A third of this is in reserve. The orebody is subvertical, with multiple lodes and with widths ranging from 1.5 - 40 m. It stretches along 8.5 km N/S strike. A cursory statistical analysis on the various resource ore widths show a higher percentage (60 per cent) of the resource being within the range of about 1.5 - 10 m. Thus a high proportion of the resource is amenable to narrow vein mining methods. This has enhanced the choice of LRMM as an alternative method. Also, with the increasing cost of mining over time, LRMM, which eliminates expensive and time consuming footwall drives, will become far more advantageous as compared to the transverse/longitudinal open stoping methods which currently constitute about 40 per cent of the total underground production.The LRMM currently delivers about 20 per cent of the Obuasi Mine production. Plans are underway to improve total underground production from the current average of 160 000 tpm to about >180 000 tpm in the next few years and about 20 - 40 per cent more in the foreseeable future. Recoverable ounces will also increase from 26 000 to about 34 000 ounces per month. The proportion of LRMM in the business plan is also expected to increase from the current modest level to about 50 per cent. Despite its tremendous advantages in terms of economics and productivity, the method is facing some challenges during its inception. Laboratory scale flotation tests were done on mineral hematite and aspecular hematite ore using oleic acid and sodium oleate as collectors. The mineral hematite floated strongly in the neutral pH region, with an increased pH range of flotation at higher oleate additions. Concentrates with sufficient hematite grade to meet the paint pigment specification were produced using oleic acid and sodium oleate as hematite collectors on the specular hematite ore. Hematite recoveries of 70 per cent at 60 per cent Fe grade were obtained using stagewise roughing. The interaction between hematite and oleate was confirmed as chemisorption but the exact mechanism could not be determined, as two independent phenomena can be used to explain the fact that the pH of maximum grade increased with increasing oleate addition.

Miners and explorers in New Zealand are expected to consult with stakeholders, keep out of core conservation areas, and operate a high standard of environmental management and rehabilitation. These requirements are not difficult to meet, but many of the industry's own actions have brought it to a low level of general public esteem in New Zealand. Reasons for this are discussed, drawing examples from the Maruia Society's experiences with the industry since the mid-1980s. The boundary between core conservation areas and other land is not easily drawn, and the Maruia Society has sought to work with the mining industry to promote legislation for net conservation benefit trade-offs. However this initiative was not successful. Today the industry, unlike most other major industry sectors in New Zealand, has no accord with the country's conservation movement.

The recent (2005) amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 have made it clear that there is no obligation on an applicant to consult. However the importance and value in consulting with the community, particularly before commencing a major project, cannot be understated.   This paper looks at the provisions of the Resource Management Act as they relate to consultation and public participation in the process, and will discuss the benefits of consultation both before an application is filed and following the filing of the application. Engaging with the local community can help shape a project to better fit the community, engender support and address opposition. In short, taking the extra step to what is legally required, can help smooth what is potentially a bumpy road. Examples in practice of the value of consultation are given.

A major challenge for closure planning at mining operations below the water table is evaporation from final void pit lakes and concentration of salts, which can impact on downstream groundwater (and surface water) flows and quality. Where such impacts are deemed unacceptable, the closure approach that is often adopted is to infill the final voids with waste rock to above the pre-mining water table to prevent the development of a pit lake and subsequent evaporative losses. BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek (Yandi) mining operations face these issues. The orebody is a channel iron deposit that forms the major aquifer in the region, which will be completely mined as a series of elongated open pits over tens of kilometres. The major constraint on mine closure planning was the stripping ratio of less than one, which means that there is insufficient waste rock to infill all areas to the pre-mining water table. Hydrogeological investigations and groundwater modelling indicated that standard mine closure approaches would result in pit void lakes becoming saline sinks unless the residual void geometry was optimised to minimise evaporation and maximise throughflow. The solution developed is a cost-effective long-term mine plan that meets all mine closure objectives, and involved:the selective infilling of all pits, largely using run-of-mine waste dumping with limited re-handling; the diversion of the major part of up-catchment creek flows around the mining operations to allow mining of the resource under Marillana Creek crossings, which in turn restricted overall aquifer recharge and reduced the elevation of the long-term water table; the diversion of some minor creek tributary flows into specific locations within the mine path to induce hydraulic gradients to maintain groundwater throughflow and water quality; and close integration of mine plan optimisation (mining and waste dumping schedules) with groundwater modelling scenarios to achieve acceptable environmental outcomes. This approach is designed to result in no reduction in downstream surface water flows or quality, maintenance of adequate downstream groundwater throughflow to support groundwater dependent ecosystems, and no reduction in the beneficial use status of the downstream groundwater resource.

In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.

The energy supply in the 21st century is still secured by coal. According to estimates of the International Energy Agency (IEA), coal will have the same importance as oil for the world-wide supply of energy until 2030. Coal is also an important element of EU policy, its future use is closely linked to effectively addressing the environmental challenges it poses. Hard and brown coal represent approximately 80 per cent of European Union (EU) reserves of fossil fuels and coal utilisation can co-exist with the development of power generation based on renewables. Europe is the world's third largest consumer of coal behind China and the United States.The Czech Republic is poor in energy resources except for coal. Brown coal is relatively abundant (mineable reserves estimated at 1800 Mt, output 48 Mt/a) and significant quantities of hard coal (mineable reserves 900 Mt, 13 Mt/a), much of it suitable for coke production, are also present.Severoceske Doly (SD Company), the biggest Czech coal mining company (22 Mt/a, 48.6 per cent Czech market share) and one of the biggest in Europe, reinforces despite the last deep crisis in the Czech and European economies its long-standing stable and strong market and financial position. From 2009, the SD Company co-owns, with partners, a brown-coal mining company MIBRAG (21 Mt/a). SD Company invests in large mining equipment (eg new giant spreaders and bucket-wheel excavators, extension of overland belt conveyors), rebuilds and upgrades mining and processing installations, auxiliary and other machinery. We should see the investment we make today in tomorrow's mining and reclamation as an opportunity and not as a burden. They enable to make our position more resistant in the longer term. Projects focused on the environment and operational safety went hand in hand with these efforts.R&D activities relate to technical innovations, improvements of mining equipment, research and evaluation of conditions for extracting coal seam and/or overburden and mitigation of environmental impacts, utilisation of coal in new products. The company spends considerable amounts on reclaiming affected land and creating a new post-mining landscape.Our dialogue with influential stakeholders in the region where we operate contributes to the long-term improvement in the quality of life of local residents. Such dialogue with communities in the last ten years has been instrumental for confidence building. SD Company helps to develop many projects of towns and villages in its vicinity. The stable and transparent relations with our neighbours are in accordance with our basic principles of corporate social responsibility.
