When it comes to structuring major mining contracts, the two most widely adopted formats are æmeasure and valueÆ and æcost-plusÆ. A problem with both of these formats is the difficultly of aligning the objectives of the mining company with those of the contractor to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. An alternative contractual arrangement is for the mining company to enter into an Alliance arrangement with the contractor, linking remuneration to mine performance across a range of targets. These targets can change over time as operational requirements change.   The aims of this paper are to: +        outline alternative types of mining contracts, as well as their strengths and pitfalls; +        describe the philosophy behind the Alliance contract at Newmont Waihi GoldÆs Favona underground mine; and +        identify some of the keys to success and pitfalls to avoid when implementing an Alliance.

In this paper, we developed and implemented a fuzzy logic expert system capable of evaluating the degree of sustainability within the context of gold mining operations. The newly introduced approach of evaluating sustainability in the gold mining industry has the merit of sufficiently handling diverse, sustainable, development-related qualitative and quantitative data owing to fuzzy logic technology capabilities in dealing with linguistic syntax. The economic, environmental and social indicator inputs were independently evaluated and then combined with the aid of fuzzy logic to provide an overall sustainability index on a scale of zero to one. A total of 66 independent indicators were identified and applied in our model. The novelty of this work lies in providing a coherent numerical and automated approach in evaluating sustainability in the context of gold mining operations. In addition, the model can aid policy- and decision-makers in arriving at consistent decisions regarding the degree of sustainability on various aspects of gold mining operations. The functionality of this model will be illustrated through several examples.

The Julius Kruttschnitt semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill model was developed by Leung in the 1980s and extensively updated to the variable rates model by Morrell and Morrison in 1996. Since then only minor upgrades have been incorporated in the version distributed in the JKSimMet simulator. A number of improvements, developed over the course of the AMIRA P9 project and in recent independent work, have now been incorporated. These improvements are based on a power-based model that directly relates the degree of breakage with energy consumption. The new size-dependent breakage function has been incorporated. The upgrades include more accurate predictions for a wide range of mill fillings (ten - 40 per cent), slurry hold-up in the mill, pebble discharge rate and the influence of changes in feed size and ball load.The paper presents the status of progress in the model development. Blast vibration analysis is one of the important topics in the control technology of blast vibration damage. Nowadays, blasting vibration safety standards are based on both the particle velocity and the frequency of vibration and they have been adopted widely and internationally. However, the analysis on vibration frequencies is less studied compared to investigations of peak particle velocity. For the vibration induced by a spherical charge in a viscoelasticly infinite rock mass, an expression of vibration spectrum taking into account the damping effect of rock mass is inferred. Then the attenuation laws of dominant frequencies and centroid frequencies are compared theoretically. For the case of cylindrical charge, dynamic finite element method (DFEM) software of LS-DYNA is employed to analyse the attenuation laws of characteristic frequencies. The research demonstrates that, no matter whether it is a spherical charge or a cylindrical charge, there is a local mutation or fluctuation at some distance when the blast proceeds, while the centroid frequencies conform to a smooth attenuation law. Both the multipeaks structures of vibration spectra and the decay rate difference between high- and low-frequency components contribute to the mutation or fluctuation investigated in this study. Additionally, an increase in longitudinally sonic velocity or the quality factor of rock mass produces an increase in the vibration frequencies, whereas an increase in blast source diameter or the rise time of blast load produces a decrease in vibration frequencies from a spherical charge. In borehole blasting, there is a positive correlation between the vibration frequencies and charge diameter, whereas there is a negative correlation with charge length. And altering the initiation plan will change vibration frequencies to various degrees. Truck fires in a tunnel can create heat release rates (HRR) significantly higher than 100 MW. Because of a fast spread of smoke and heat the self-rescuing period is shortened significantly. Furthermore, it was experienced that firefighters are not able to approach the fire because of enormous heat and radiation. As consequence, the fire may spread to adjacent vehicles, which is reported for distances of more than 50 m. Tunnels can be damaged severely by fires and the repair works causes long closing time of tunnels. In addition to direct costs for the refurbishment of the tunnel, further economic losses will occur due to the closure time. Conventional deluge systems in Japanese and Australian road tunnels have been known since the 1960s. During the last years the research work was concentrated in the development of more effective and cost-effective solutions based on water mist technology. Orientating fire tests as well as specifications of minimum requirements were carried out within the European research project UPTUN. This basic work was extended by the safety of life in tunnels (SOLIT) research project, funded by the German government. The scope of SOLIT was not only to study the effects of water mist fire suppression systems in tunnels, but also the interactions with other safety systems, such as fire detection, passive fire protection or ventilation. Furthermore, the integration of active fire suppression systems into a holistic tunnel safety system was part of the work program. Within this research project a large-scale fire test program with more than 50 fire tests, including 25 truck fires with a potential HRR of almost 200 MW, was carried out in the test tunnel of San Pedro des Anes (Spain). Furthermore, a two-week testing and training period with the Madrid Fire Brigade was carried out after the SOLIT program. Two fundamental results were achieved during the fire tests:Primarily, water mist systems are able to control the HRR of fires in tunnels, so the atmosphere will be improved significantly. Hazardous effects of toxic smoke on people will be reduced and due to the reduction of temperatures and radiation, a firefighterÆs approach is improved significantly. Furthermore, the fire spread will be hampered and the thermal load on the building structure also be reduced. Secondarily, due to positive interactions with the ventilation system, the effectiveness of a tunnel ventilation system, longitudinal as well as semi-transversal, is increased significantly. Based on the results of the SOLIT research project, a water mist system was applied into several parts of the M30 tunnels in Madrid. As a basic principle the technical equipment and the methodology of implementation comply with the UPTUN 251 guidance, recommending minimum standards for water-based fire suppression systems in tunnels.

Ore from the Browns deposit near Batchelor, in the Northern Territory of Australia, is a fine-grained polymetallic sulfide ore hosted in graphitic black shale. Minerals of economic significance are seigenite (Co,Ni)4S3, Galena (PbS) and Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with minor Sphalerite (ZnS). Gangue minerals include quartz, carbon and K-feldspar. The grain size is fine, with a significant amount of the seigenite present as Early flotation work determined that a grind size of around 20 microns was required to achieve clean sulfide concentrates. This work recommended oil agglomeration flotation, in which small sulfide minerals were collected, then loosely agglomerated with oil ahead of flotation into a heavily mineralised froth. In the 400 kg/hr prototype plant this froth proved unmanageable. A conventional flotation circuit after grinding to a P80 of 24 microns and using very low flotation pulp densities resulted in an 86 per cent cobalt recovery.The paper analyses further laboratory work which has increased cobalt recovery to 91 per cent by grinding to û250 microns ahead of flash flotation. The real cobalt recovery breakthrough comes from flash flotation of the whole mill discharge rather than the more usual flash flotation of cyclone underflow. Flash flotation tailings are ground to û38 microns and are floated under normal flotation conditions with only the scavenger concentrates being reground to 20 microns.A one tonne per hour prototyping campaign is scheduled to demonstrate the robustness of this circuit.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences' Mineral Resources Programme is currently carrying out research under two major projects:   HAREM (Hauraki Andesite Rhyolite Epithennal Mineralisation) The Hauraki Goldfield lies within a belt of andesite-dacite-rhyolite volcanics of Miocene Pliocene age which is underlain by a basement of Mesozoic greywacke. It contains some 50 separate epithermal gold deposits and is a world-class gold and silver producer. The HAREM project is aimed at improving models of the epithermal gold mineralisation, and to better understand the processes and controls of origin, transport and deposition of the gold.   MARGO - (Marlborough Gold) The MARGO project is aimed at determining the geological factors that controlled the formation of the Mesozoic mesothermal gold-antimony-tungsten deposits in the Marlborough Schist belt. Following reconnaissance work on 12 deposits, our current work is concentrated on deposits in the Wakamarina valley.

Laboratory batch rod and ball milling tests were conducted on samples of Heavy Medium Separator (HMS) sinks from Renison Limited. The effects of mill rotation speed, rod volume and ball size on the resulting product size distribution were investigated. Between 48 and 69 per cent of critical speed, the product sizing distribution curves remained very similar, with a finer grind resulting from increasing the speed of rotation at constant grind time. Increasing the rod loading from ten to 53 per cent by volume caused the product size to become finer and more closely sized with a transition occurring at approximately 29 per cent. This was interpreted as a change of dominant grinding mechanism from abrasion to impact. No preferential grinding of the cassiterite was observed. The effect of increasing ball size at constant charge weight was to preferentially grind the coarser particles and generate more intermediate sized particles, whereas the product from a mixed ball charge gave a distribution similar to that obtained when a charge containing only smaller balls was used.

"Characterisation of sulfide minerals (eg pyrite, sphalerite) in historic tailings can assist in determining whether there are economic benefits of reprocessing such materials using modern metallurgical practices. In addition, there are associated environmental advantages if the historic tailings are actively generating acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). At the Old Tailings Dam (OTD), Savage River, Western Tasmania, 38 Mt of pyritic tailings were deposited from 1967 to 1982; consequently it has been recognised as an AMD source. Long-term management options considered for this site have included the establishment of either a water, hard-engineered or vegetation cover. However, due to geotechnical challenges posed and the lack of success demonstrated by previous pilot studies, these strategies have not been implemented. Instead, resolving the pyrite chemistry can allow for a first-pass assessment of whether reprocessing these tailings is a feasible option as part of a long-term management strategy for this legacy site.Tailings samples (n = 144) were collected across the OTD from up to 2 m depth from five facies (A–E), and four zones (1 to 4; defined by hydrological regime and grain size). These materials were subjected to acid-base accounting (ABA) and mineralogical evaluations to determine their geoenvironmental characteristics. Following this, 26 samples were selected for in-depth laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations to evaluate pyrite chemistry across different tailings facies. The results revealed enrichment of Co and Ni in these materials. Specifically, Co content was up to 3.0 wt per cent, particularly within facies C to E, and Zones 3 and 4. Cobalt is recognised as a critical metal, therefore, reprocessing should be considered as a future rehabilitation option for the OTD, pending resource definition using established codes and practices.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Fox, N and Jackson, L, 2016. Effectiveness of Lead as an Alternative to Copper Activation in Gold Bearing Iron Sulfide Flotation

Laboratory testwork was carried out on an overall orebody composite, of 2.9 per cent Cu and 4.2 per cent Zn, prepared from drill core taken from the Currawong fine-grained, copper-zinc massive sulphide deposit near Benambra in Victoria. While 90 per cent of the copper was readily recovered in a concentrate of 20 per cent Cu, after grinding to 95 per cent passing 38 microns, zinc responded poorly to conventional flowsheet/reagent regimes. Experience elsewhere with the use of reverse cleaning, to separate pyrite from sphalerite, led to a series of tests in which better (but still modest)metallurgical results were obtained. The best result was a zinc recovery of 55 per cent in a concentrate of 50.5 per cent Zn. The major loss of zinc occurred in the reverse cleaning stage where the unit recovery of zinc was similar to pilot plant results achieved at Mount Isa Mines on similar feedstock. Diagnostic mineralogy suggested that an overall zinc recovery of 70 per cent was probably the practical upper limit, at a 50 per cent Zn grade.

The gold salting fraud at Busang on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia was exposed in early 1997 and resulted from the independent drilling, sampling and assaying of PT Freeport Indonesia which reported assays from the South East Zone with negligible concentrations of gold. Since then, a number of legal actions directed at former Bre-X directors, consulting firms and financial or broking institutions are at various stages and are based on numerous allegations surrounding the supposed existence of obvious and numerous warning signs or æred flagsÆ. These include: the absence of references to visible gold in the drill logs; the alluvial nature of the gold grains; the high gravity recoveries; the invalid comparison with Kelian; the absence of outside scrutiny and the lack of external review/audit and surface depletion of gold. The focus on the red flags has been at the expense of the numerous positive indications or ægreen flagsÆ. These include the morphology and chemistry of the gold grains, the gravity testwork, the amalgamation results, the role of external consultants, the results of a review by one of North AmericaÆs leading minerals auditing groups, the behaviour of the gold at surface and the presence of references to visible gold in the drill logs. The flawed nature of the discussion of the technical facts surrounding Busang has prevented a meaningful and informed discussion about what actually happened and has, therefore, prevented the formulation of meaningful remedies for the future.

The worldwide association of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and rifting is confirmed in New Zealand. In the currently productive Coromandel epithermal-gold province reported Ar-Ar dating of adularia from low sulfidation deposits falls into two groups at 6 and 7 Ma. Bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism has been reported to be K-Ar dated at 9 to 7 Ma and 6 to 5.5 Ma. Epithermal gold mineralisation in Northland is spatially associated with bimodal basaltic-rhyolitic volcanism, with rifting cogenetic with that in the CVZ. The Taupo Volcanic zone (TVZ) is sufficiently young that the presence of a segmented rift with recent bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism can be genetically associated with epithermal gold mineralisation, which occurs as both fossil occurrences and in active geothermal fields. This reinforces the known potential prospectiveness of the Coromandel area and increases that of Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

The Ngakuru zeolites are located about 20 km south of Rotorua and comprise a number of deposits dispersed along several fault lines. Relatively recent volcanic activity (250,000 years ago) resulted in ash depositions that vary in depth and mineralogy. Subsequent variable thermal alteration intensities generated predominantly clinoptilolite and mordenite zeolites with a range of physical characteristics. Typically the zeolites have low density (650 kg/m3), have high liquid (60% of dry weight) and odour absorption characteristics, and a high affinity for soluble cations (CEC =: 100 meq/100 g). Traditional kitty litter and oil absorbency markets are being expanded. New opportunities in waste and potable water treatment, organic and synthetic slow release fertilisers, use as a light weight aggregate for speciality concretes, and pozzalome activity are currently being researched.

Geological, textural and mineralogical classification of iron ores is routinely conducted by mine and exploration geologists on reverse circulation percussion, blasthole cone and bulk samples for grade control, defining ore and waste, determining lump:fines ratio and predicting downstream processing characteristics. Classification is based on physical hardness, colour, streak and other visual characteristics. However, logging is generally restricted to the five to 20 per cent of chips above about 2 mm. This means that most of the sample is too fine to be reliably logged for anything but colour or streak and the textural types must be inferred from other information. A recently developed software package called æRecognitionÆ allows automated identification and classification of iron ore textural types and gangue on a particle basis in polished section down to 0.01 mm using processed digital images. It is not designed to be used as a routine logging tool, but is applicable where higher definition is required at the resource evaluation stage on selected percussion, drill core or bulk samples. æRecognitionÆ processes data obtained after optical image analysis of fine iron ore samples. It contains several parts, like æRecognitionÆ, æCompositionÆ, æLiberation by Total IronÆ, æLiberation by PhasesÆ and æStatisticsÆ, which allow vast and diverse information to be obtained about the iron ore samples being studied. Identification and classification of the textural type of each particle is performed according to the CSIRO-Hamersley Iron Ore Group Classification Scheme. The recognition procedure encompasses a good knowledge of different ore types and a logical knowledge tree, managing fuzzy boundary problems and the potential for a few different ore types in the same particle to be considered. This new technology introduces strict criteria to make the process of identifying particles more objective. Automated recognition standardises the identification procedure and significantly saves time. It enables users without a strong background in mineralogy to perform accurate texture identification. The æRecognitionÆ package has a modern user-friendly interface and Word compatible output. The combination of all the features mentioned makes the package a convenient tool for detailed studies of fine iron ores.
