The White Pine mine site lies five miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County, Mich. Copper sulfide, mixed with some native copper, is mined by a room-and-pillar system from gently dipping Upper Kewee-nawan sediments. Depth of mining now varies from 700 to 1800 ft and the ore body continues to a depth of at least 3400 ft. An area roughly 21/2 miles square has already been mined. Mining height has varied from 61/2 to 22 ft. A rock mechanics program was set up in late 1963 to promote safety and mining efficiency. This note reports some of the findings. Rock Strength Compressive strength of small, dry specimens of sandstones, siltstones, and shales from the ore zone varies from 20,000 to 30,000 psi. This is intermediate between the softer coal mine sediments and the meta-morphic and igneous rocks of hard rock mines. Annual Cycle of Rock Failure Since 1963, every roof and pillar failure involving more than a few tons of rock has been examined and documented. Some 1500 stations have been installed for measuring convergence, -c1/1000 in., with Invar extensometers. Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals throughout the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data from test site and laboratory indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. These low order or "transient" velocities were believed to originate because of inadequate primer strength or a primer diameter to column diameter mismatch. However, the nature of this experimental work was generally confined to small diameter column charges detonated in iron pipe simulated bore-holes. It was questionable whether the smaller scale laboratory data was applicable to large 12 1/4 and 15-in. boreholes.

Most of the treatises on metallurgy intimate that simultaneously with the development by the atomic physicist of a really satisfactory theory of the atom will be inaugurated a new epoch in the science of metals. Metallurgically and metaphorically, we shall dwell in the Utopia of Sir Thomas More. It is my privilege this afternoon to demonstrate that this state has not arrived. An atom is a miniature planetary system consisting of a positively charged nuclear sun about which revolve electrons each carrying the negative charge e. The charge on the nucleus is + Ze where Z is the atomic number and the number of planetary electrons in a neutral atom is equal to Z. These electrons are arranged in several groups having different binding energies. Ordinary x-ray phenomena relate to processes occurring deep within the atom, usually with electrons in the so-called K or L shells. Such electrons in the heavier atoms are so closely bound to the nucleus that the forces exerted by neighboring atoms in a solid are relatively inappreciable. For most practical x-ray investigation, the atom may be considered as in the gaseous phase completely isolated from its neighbors. The K radiation from an element in the gaseous state, in the solid or liquid phase, or even in combination with other elements in all its possible valences, is almost identical.‡ Visual and ultraviolet spectroscopy is concerned with disturbances of the most loosely bound outer or valence electrons of the atom, always in the vapor state. To those who investigate the workings of our complicated mining and metallurgical industries, the story of their evolution from humble beginnings will appear an instructive romance. Rapid advances in any branch of science often follow the development of new instruments or techniques which permit the scientist a closer look at the material in which he is interested. With the development of the polariz¬ing microscope, modern petrology was born. The resolving power of the microscope, however, was not great enough to enable the geologist to dis¬tinguish or identify the material now known to be minerals which constitute the bulk of the rocks known as "clays" and laterites. The discovery of X-rays and the development of powder X-ray diffrac¬tion techniques provided the extra resolving power necessary to get "a closer look" at the minerals in the clays and laterites. These techniques are largely responsible for the great strides made in the past two decades in the identification of the clay, sesquioxide and hydroxide minerals. To obtain an X-ray diffraction. pattern of a mineral or rock is relatively a simple procedure, but to interpret this pattern in terms of crystal structure or min¬eral identity is quite another matter. It has taken the combined talents of physicists, physical and colloid chemists, mineralogists, and geologists to unravel the identity of some of the minerals in these complex rocks and, as this symposium will indicate, many more problems remain to be solved. To assist in the identification of these minerals, we have the ever-useful microscope, which, is supplemented by the development, only in the last ten years, of differential thermal techniques and the powerful and costly "eye" that enables us to see the shapes and sizes of extremely small particles -the electron microscope. To this array of equipment must be added such gadgets as supercentrifuges, spectrographs, and the apparatus necessary for chemical analytical work. Obviously, not only is it difficult for any one man to master all of the techniques to the point where he can do competent re¬search, but also few institutions are able to provide the high capital outlay for purchase and maintenance of suitable equipment. Here we clearly see that if this equipment is to help us solve our many problems, a close co¬operation of specialists from various institutions and industry is essential. This, however, is less than half the problem. If the geologist is going to learn to intelligently find, and the industrialist to intelligently and eco¬nomically exploit the materials that constitute a large part of the mineral wealth upon which our way of life is based, we must get a better insight into

TWENTY FIVE years of doing, finding, and encouraging others to do scientific research in' industry, and of organizing the machinery for the` smooth 'and effective conduct of such research, have left me with a feeling that so far as this branch of human activity is concerned the problems in 'essence are- not, materially 'different from those met elsewhere. Years ago, in a less mature period of life, I may have thought that the effective industrial research man was a being somewhat different from his fellow workers in adjacent 'fields, but I have long since 'changed my views. The rank and' file of the modern industrial research organization are relatively easy to find, though some¬times difficult to get in sufficient numbers. Mistakes in choosing them are not particularly serious to the or¬ganization, however unfortunate they may be for the misplaced individual who persists too long in the wrong environment. The reason for this is obvious from the fact that, taken by and large, the work of the rank and file is at best necessarily a work of detail done under guidance of the more experienced. In this respect the situation of the rank and file in an industrial research organization is not different from that class in any other group activity, whether concerned with industry, the university, or the church. This does not mean, however, that we are not all anxious to have the best possible material obtainable in the rank and file, or that we are indifferent to the utmost of encouragement and stimulation to its individual members.

THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute, since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1" to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. I). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-alltimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the liquidus curve of the binary alloys did not intersect at the euteotic temperature. An equivalent effect mas observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent in- vestigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 2 51.5°C. The observation that the curves of primarY crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomeilon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4pb. He felt that supercooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3 the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature Of 2500 to 252°C. at a rate Of coo1ing of about 6°C. Per min. Abell Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic only 11 .4 to 11.5 per cent antimany. THE empirical character of plasticity analysis insures a continuing need for measurements of the yield surfaces of anisotropic materials. Recently, Wheeler and Ireland (W-I) proposed that an octahedral yield locus could be constructed on the basis of six Knoop hardness indentations. Such simplicity would have obvious appeal, if it led to consistently dependable results. In other recent work, a much more straightforward (and more tedious) method of measurement was used to establish all quadrants of the plane-stress yield loci for two substantially anisotropic titanium alloys.2,3 The same materials have since been reex-amined by the W-I method with results being reported here. A full description of the stress state under a Knoop indentor would be complex. In principle, however, this can be avoided in relating the hardness number to a plane-stress yield locus, by the expedient of superimposing the appropriate hydrostatic component on that state of stress. Six possible orientations of in-dentor on orthogonal (symmetry) planes, along (principal) coordinate directions, are illustrated in Fig. 1(0). Pictured in Fig. l(b) are normal-stress components nominally associated with indentation n: o2(H), directly proportional to the Khn in this case, together with By overlaying a hydrostatic tension, ah, that in general is equal to the stress state around the indentation is reduced to one of plane stress in the x-y plane for which the stress ratio is a The key step in the W-I yield-locus construction is to represent the Khn for any indentor orientation as a vector quantity on the octahedral plane. In the plotting, the vector is given as deviatoric stress components along the principal axes in the ratio , where represents the direction of the minor (width) diagonal and 1 that of the major (length) diagonal. There is no attempt by W-I to justify the 7/1, although it might be supposed that the value originates in the usual ratio of major to minor diagonals in a Knoop indentation of about 7/1. If that were its origin, the link to the deviatoric stress ratio would presumably be made by first taking 7/1 and then turning to the Levy-Mises equation for isotropic material: Interpreted in this way, the W-1 approach seems arbitrary and even contradictory. Yet it would still be favored by two circumstances: the deformation under a Knoop indentor approaches plane strain: when dcw/del =a; and the shape of the locus where plane strain is represented is not overly sensitive either to the exact value of dc,/dcl or to the degree of anisotropy, within a rather wide range of both variables. At Elkol, Wyo., about 80 miles northeast of Ogden, Utah, the Kemmerer Coal Co. and the Utah Power and Light Co. are involved in a joint venture that will soon see 1 million tons of coal going "out by wire" to Ogden. Kemmerer, owner of a multi-seam strip mine, and the utility, now building a steam power plant adjacent to the mine site, expect to begin initial power generation by February 1963. Although capable of producing only 150,000 kw at that time, this plant is expected to be ultimately enlarged to 500,000-kw capacity which will require about 2 million tons of coal annually. The deposit consists of more than 30 seams of coal, usually varying in thickness from 2 to 40 ft, and separated by beds of sandstones and shales. In certain areas the aggregate thickness of all the coal seams measures 300 ft. The thickest and most spectacular of these seams is the lowest one, referred to as the No. 1 seam, which is 118 ft thick in some places.

The DOE-funded (Contract No. DE-ACO3-77ET13108) Gulf Research & Development Co. (GR&DC) field tests of underground coal gasification in steeply dipping beds (UCG/SDB) were conducted in the North Knobs area, located 12.8 km (8 miles) west of Rawlins, WY. The site has a gently rolling, sparsely vegetated, semidesert terrain on the transition zone between a broad, flat basin (Great Divide Basin) to the west and the subdued mountains of the Rawlins uplift to the east. A comprehensive geotechnical program (Ahner et al., 1980) was essential to successfully complete the test program. Emphasis of the program was the subsurface characterization of the site and consisted of mapping, drilling and logging, core analyses, and hydrologic tests. The samples of lithologic units over- and underlying the G coal seam were tested in the laboratory for their modulus and strength. This program provided the required data necessary for designing surface facilities, input for permits, and ensuring correct placement of the process modules. The two UCG tests at the Rawlins site were conducted in the nominally 6.7 m (22 ft) thick G coal seam (rank-subbituminous B), dipping at 63°.

The Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140" 06' N., Long. 86" 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Tegucigalpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle Y. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 Ib. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo servicc. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced. The nearest site for an airport was two miles north of the mine. The necessary grading was done by a small track-type tractor with a wheeled grader, which was brought in overland. Although an almost continuous campaign had been carried on by various experimenters since 1885 to find a commercial process of smelting zinc by electrothermic means, no commercial success was attained in the United States. The St. Joseph Lead Co., appreciating the theoretical possibilities of such a process, such as the ability to construct units of large capacity, quality control, and the possibility of treating complex and refractory ores, decided in 1926 that the process was worthy of further investigation, and in that year, at one of its southeast Missouri plants, began the development of the electrothermic zinc-smelting process according to the invention of the late Earl C. Gaskill. Late in 1929 the process reached a stage of commercial significance, and in 1930 the erection of a modern electrothermic zinc smelter was begun, at Josephtown, Beaver County, Pa. The site is 3 miles from Monaca, which is on the main line of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad, and a spur of the railroad has been constructed to the plant site. The site borders upon the Ohio River, which is navigable for 600 to 800-ton barges. This district was selected for the plant after an economic survey involving such questions as cost and availability of electric power, reduction fuel, transportation facilities, and the transportation charges on raw and finished materials, labor conditions, and taxes. The initial unit of the plant was designed to treat daily 120 tons of 58 per cent zinc sulphide concentrates from the company's mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. The plant equipment is housed in seven modern steel-frame buildings, and includes: Roasting and Acid Plants 3000-ton concentrate storage. Two Nichols-Herreshoff 21 ft. 6-in. diameter, 12-hearth roasters with usual cast-iron airshaft supporting chromium-alloy rabble arms and rabbles. SO2 gas purification system consisting of: One double-compartment hot-dust Cottrell precipitator. Cast-iron sinuous air-contact gas cooler.

Following a procedure proposed by Wheeler and Ireland, Plane stress yield loci were constructed from Knoob hardness numbers. Basically, six differently oriented hardness measurements were made on three orthogml surfaces through pure poly crystalline magnesium sheet, a magnesium single crystal, and sheet of the magnesium alloys: Mg + 0.5 pct Th, Mg + 4 pct Li, AZ31B, and EKOO. Hardness loci were found to be in poor agreement at small strains (E < 0.05) with loci established by a more rigorous technique. At larger strains (E - 0.10) the agreement is fair, but at this stage in deformation the conventional locus has lost much of the asymmetry that characterizes these anisotropic materials. Two effects which will lead to distortions in the Khn locus are discussed with reference to the geometry of plastic flow during a hardness test. DETERMINING a material&apos;s resistance to multiaxial loading is of interest not only from a structural design viewpoint but also from that of deformation processing. Unfortunately, the determination of the yield locus, although simple in principle, involves tedious procedures if the results are to be at all rigorous.&apos; The idea, first proposed by Wheeler and 1reland2 of determining the yield locus by means of six Knoop hardness impressions along the principal directions in a material has obvious appeal. It is simple, quick, and should be applicable to very thin sheets. If such a technique could be demonstrated to produce consistently reliable results, it would be of interest to both researcher and designer. Lee, Jabara, and ackofen have compared the yield locus determined by Knoop hardness measurements (the Khn locus) to a locus determined by more rigorous techniques. They found good agreement for two titanium alloys at a plastic strain of about 1 pct. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if the Khn locus construction is a reasonable approximation to the locus of a highly anisotropic material. Examples of such materials are magnesium and magnesium alloys which have severely distorted yield loci which in turn reflect markedly dfferent yield strength in different directions.&apos; In pure magnesium, for example, the yield stress in tension along the transverse direction may be four times the yield stress in compression in the same direction and twice the tensile yield stress in the rolling direction. Predicting such large differences ought to serve as a severe test of the Khn locus construction. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Samples of rolled sheet, 0.250 in. (6.35 mm) thick, of pure magnesium and four magnesium alloys (Mg experimental materials. The pure magnesium together with the lithium and thorium alloys were those used in the study of Kelley and Hosford. The grain size was ASTM number 4 for the pure magnesium and number 6 for the alloys. HARDNESS TESTING The materials were sectioned along the rolling and transverse planes, mounted in a quick setting resin, and mechanically polished. Most of the hardness tests were performed on a surface prepared by electro-polishing (30 pct nitric acid in methanol at 0°C and 20 v) with the exception of the AZ31B and EK00 alloys which were made directly on a metallographically polished surface. However, subsequent hardness tests on the same sample after heavily electropolishing, revealed essentially the same hardness as before. At least twenty Knoop hardness impressions under a 100-g load were made in each of the six orientations shown in Fig. 1. The average hardness number and standard deviation were then calculated for each orientation. CONVENTIONAL LOCUS CONSTRUCTION Yield loci were constructed using a technique described in detail by Lee and ackofen,&apos; in which the flow stress (stress at a given plastic strain) fixes the coordinates of a point on the locus and measurements of the strain ratio serve to establish the slope of the locus at that point. The loading paths which correspond to uniaxial tension or compression tests establish the four intercepts of the locus with the coordinate axes plus one point on the balanced biaxial tension line Tensile testing was performed along the rolling and transverse (r, t) directions. Samples had a uniform rectangular gage length 1 by 4 by 4 in. (25.4 by 6.35 by 6.35 mm) and were deformed at a strain rate of 3.33 x 104 sec-&apos;. The tests were interrupted periodically to unload the sample and measure the plastic strains by means of X-Y post yield strain gages. Compression tests in the rolling, transverse, and through-thickness (r, f, z) directions were performed on 1/4 in. (6.35 mm) cubes at an initial strain rate of 8.33 x sec-&apos;. Lubrication was provided by 0.002 in. (51 pm) Teflon sheet which was renewed after unloading for micrometer measurements used to calculate the strains.

THERE are discrepancies reported in the literature regarding the micro and macro stress-strain behavior of metals and alloys. In particular, Young&apos;s modulus and micro yield measurements often show significant variations depending upon the techniques employed.&apos;-" The purpose of this note is to correlate measurements made with four techniques and to indicate where some of these discrepancies might arise. Allied use of these techniques can provide a complete and consistent characterization of micro and macro stress-strain behavior (over the strain range of 10-9 to 10--2 in. in.-&apos;) from a minimum number of samples. Techniques. The techniques employed for measuring stress-strain behavior involved the use of a) linear differential transformers, b) SR-4 strain gages, c) longitudinal resonance waves, and d) X-ray diffraction. Specimen geometries and preparations are summarized in Table I for each technique. Differential Transformer and Strain Measurements. An Instron universal testing machine, modified with an alignment device, was used to apply the load via parallel-jaw grips. The signal from the load cell was applied to the Y scale of a Moseley X-Y recorder (sensitivity of 10 lb load per in. chart). The elongation was monitored simultaneously with strain gages mounted on three sides of the rectangular specimen, and with two linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) mounted at 90 deg to one another on faces that also contained the strain gages, Fig. 1. The signal from one of the LVDT&apos;s was applied to the X scale of the recorder (sensitivity 40 µ in. elongation per in. chart) in order to trace a continuous load-elonga-tion curve. Concurrently, the strain on the same face (i.e., the face monitored by the LVDT) was recorded by the corresponding strain gage. A stress-strain curve was plotted from the load cell-strain gage data and was compared to the stress-strain curve (converted from load-elongation) plotted from the continuous load cell-LVDT trace. DURING a session on coal and coke at the February, 1926, meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the writer called attention to the important work on the X-ray analysis of coal1,2 being carried on in England by C. Norman Kemp and his associates. This aroused so much interest that a paper on the subject was requested for the October meeting. It has seemed advisable to make this paper a preliminary survey of the present status in the application of X-ray methods to coal problems and to follow it from time to time with further articles as the art develops. A survey of this sort naturally divides itself into two parts, radioscopic analysis of the distribution of constituents through the body of the coal, and diffraction analysis of the state of association of the elementary components. In this article the subject matter concerning radioscopic analysis has been drawn almost entirely from the writings of Kemp and his associates and the illustrations have been specially furnished by him. It is a pleasure to record here a great indebtedness for this courtesy and cooperation. The subject matter and illustrations concerning diffraction analysis are taken from the author&apos;s unpublished researches.

IN CIRCLES where mining men are wont to fraternize, a statement often heard is: "Yes, I spent six (or two, or ten, or thirty) years down at &apos;Chuqui.&apos; " This means Chuquicamata, the site in Chile of what in all probability is the world&apos;s largest deposit of copper ore. One hears similar remarks regarding Braden and Andes, and, in fact, regarding a score of other big mines in South America, Africa, and elsewhere, but Chuqui seems to lead the others as the locale of engineers who have done a stint in foreign countries. One reason probably is that it is the Anaconda Company&apos;s premier foreign operation. Because of its unusual size and the diversity of its operations a great many men are needed. It is a sort of training school for young engineers; but, also, Anaconda has sent down a great many mature members of its big organization for special assignments like metallurgical research or plant construction. Chuquicamata is about 150 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at an elevation of 9,500 ft. It is in an almost rainless desert country where the wind (it is alleged by some) blows most of the time. However, the copper mining entrepreneurs have done their best to make up for what nature has neglected to do in creating a pleasant environment for the people who operate the mines. These include about 160 "foreigners" of whom 86 are from the United States, most of them accompanied by their families. There are 165 Chileans on the staff. Comforts, conveniences, and many luxuries are provided to offset in some measure the disagreeable features of the climate. Nevertheless, as I have implied, engineers at Chuqui generally jump at the chance to become "alumni" when opportunity offers. At the same time, they appear to take pride in their alma mater.

THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute. Since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1° to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. 1). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-antimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the&apos; liquidus curve of the .binary alloys did not intersect at the eutectic temperature. An equivalent effect was observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent investigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 251.5°C. The observation that the curves of primary crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomenon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4Pb. He felt that super-cooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3. the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature of 250° to 252°C. at a rate of cooling of about 6°C. per min. Abel, Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous, publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic contains only 11,4 to 11.5 per cent antimony.
