FOR many years there has been no book that adequately represented the present state of the art of coal preparation-an art that has been rapidly changing during the passing years, and particularly during the last ten or fifteen years. In fact, changes of preparation have been so rapid that no book could keep abreast of their progress, and even the Proceedings of the technical societies have not been able to do so. It has been the intention of this committee and of the editor to make this book as nearly up to date as possible and to make it one that would appeal primarily to operating men, while at the same time adequately showing the theory back of the many processes used. The start of the war and the increased calls upon the time of the authors selected for the various chapters have slightly dimmed the brightness of the ideal intended, but the result undoubtedly brings the practice of preparation and its literature closer together than they ever have been before. It is the hope of the committee that this book will be useful both to those whose daily work is concerned with preparation and to consumers who use the product produced at the many fine and up-to-date coal plants throughout the country, which are now producing, as they always have done, all the coal needed by this country in its greatest crisis. While the committee has exercised a general supervision over the preparation of the various chapters, all of the correspondence and edi¬torial work have been done by Prof. David R. The effects of various antifreeze agents on the formation of hydrogen sulphide hydrate have been studied. On a molar basis the relative lowering of Tm (the maximum temperature at which solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate can exist in equilibrium with the given solution) for the various agents is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 1.71, methyl alcohol 0.57, ethyl alcohol 0.68, ethylene glycol 0.73, diethylene glycol 0.73, sucrose 0.87, dextrose 0.71. On a weight basis the relative lowering of TM is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 0.91, methyl alcohol 1.08, ethyl alcohol 0.89, ethylene glycol 0.69, diethylene glycol 0.41, dextrose 0.23, and sucrose 0.15. Introduction The solid hydrate of hydrogen sulphide, H2S.6H20,1 is in equilibrium with water and liquid hydrogen sulphide at 85°F at a partial pressure of hydrogen sulphide approximately equal to the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. At temperatures below 85°F, in the presence Of excess hydrogen sulphide (greater than the amount required to react with the water present) the hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid hydrogen sulphide at approximately the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide. In the presence of excess water, the solid hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid water, containing dissolved hydrogen sulphide, at a pressure lower than the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at the same temperat~re.2 The lower the temperature, the greater the difference between the decomposition pressure of the hydrate and the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. Conditions conducive to the formation of solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate may exist in wells producing a gas containing a high percentage of hydrogen sulphide under high pressure, or in the lead lines from such wells. This paper gives the results of tests made with various antifreeze agents which might be useful in decomposing the hydrate or in preventing the formation of the hydrate of hydrogen sulphide Apparatus Fig , shows a diagram of the apparatus used. The sample under observation was contained in a glass tube 34 cm long, having a 6 mm id and a wall thickness of 2.5 mm. The lower end of this tube was closed- with a plug of butyl rubber. The upper end of the tube was connected to a diaphragm gauge, with a stainless steel diaphragm, a manometer, a vacuum pump, and a cylinder of hydrogen sulphide, The tube was held nearly horizontal, with the liquid resting along the lower side of the tube. It was found that when the tube was held in a vertical position, it broke with ex. plosive violence as soon as it became filled with solid hydrate. Presumably this was caused by the expansion which occurred on solidification of the hydrate. The difficulty disappeared when the tube was held in an inclined position during the tests.

IN discussing the art of the goldsmith, it is apparent that it is an art requiring skill. He who wishes to be acclaimed a good master therein must be a good universal master in several arts, for the different kinds of work that come to his hands to be done are infinite. Those who work in gold and silver must outdistance all other craftsmen in learning and achievement to the same degree that their materials outdistance other metals in nobility. Therefore, it is necessary first of all to be a good designer, because design is the key that opens the doors not only to the goldsmith's craft but to all others. Then it is necessary that he understand melting and that he know well how to work with a hammer and how to use flat gravers and burins in engraving, as well as files and chisels. He must also possess certain secrets that are needful to the art, which in truth are parts of alchemy, such as softening gold when it is brittle and raw, coloring it when it has little color, soldering, enameling, working in niello, blanching, gilding, and an infinite number of things which must all be known in detail. But above all he who wishes to do this art well must be very patient in working, must know how to mould and how to proceed with the melt and with the file, hammer, chisel, or other implements for bringing his gold or silver work to the final state which he plans. He must also have good judgment in gems and know well how to recognize every [134v] good or defective quality they possess, and to distinguish the false gem from the true, either when set or when unmounted, as there is need; also how to value them both in buying or selling and in satisfying others who seek his appraisal. He should also be experienced not only in the technique of melting but also in the methods of assaying, parting, refining, cementing, and the like, and still many others. Viscous fingering was studied as it occurred in an open Hele-Shaw model (1 ft x 4 ft x 1/16 in.); it was also studied in the same model packed with 80-mesh glass beads during miscible displacements under unfavorable viscosity ratio conditions. It was determined that the lengths of 20 elements of the front were distributed normally around the average position of the combined elements under all conditions. Represented by the normal distribution, the length of the viscous fingers grew linearly with the distance traveled from the point of finger formation, increased with displacement velocity, and increased with increasing mobility ratio. Results obtained during the first few inches of displacement were of little or no use in predicting finger growth and/or finger length throughout the 4-ft model since the point of finger initiation cannot be predicted and would often occur several inches from the point of injection with either positive or apparent negative coordinates. The fingering occurring during a miscible slug displacement was much greater than would be predicted based upon the actual mobility ratios between in-place fluid and slug and between slug and following fluid, using the results described above for miscible displacement in the absence of a slug. Many of the experiments in the packed model showed that the rate of growth of the viscous fingers was diminishing toward the end of the displacement in the 4-ft long model, indicating that microscopic mixing, such as diffusion or dispersion, was decreasing the viscous fingering effect. INTRODUCTION Viscous fingering is a manifestation of a finger-shaped interface between displaced and displacing fluids occurring during typical miscible displacement projects for oil recovery. Its cause may be traced to the instability of a viscous fluid being displaced by a more mobile fluid. Viscous fingering takes on important significance in the miscible slug process 1.2 where it may be a dominant factor in determining minimum slug size. Experimental1-3 and theoretical4-7 studies of viscous fingering have been made by other investi- gators. However, an exhaustive study of the variables affecting viscous fingering had not been made. The present study was undertaken in an effort to determine the effects of some of the more obvious variables—such as mobility ratio, displacement velocity, distance displaced, and packing—upon viscous finger length and growth in a small laboratory model. It does not necessarily follow that conclusions reached by studying the results of this model study may be applied to the field. Future studies would have to evaluate the effect of model size on extension of these results. EQUIPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A flow diagram for the equipment used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. Basically, it consisted of (1) a constant-rate pump for the injection of displacing fluid into (2) a model made up of two flat transparent plates spaced a small distance apart and (3) provisions for the production of fluid into a calibrated graduate. The displacing fluid contained a dye which allowed visual observation of finger spacing and length. The pump performed at rates from 2.5 cc/hr to 480 cc/hr, while pumping a light mineral oil into a bladder in a closed glass container holding the displacing fluid. The model was made up of two plates of 1-in. Plexiglass with dimensions 1-ft wide by 4-ft long. These were spaced 1/16 in. apart so that the internal model dimensions were 1-ft wide x 4-ft long x 1/16

INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING CONGRESS This Congress will be held under the auspices of five National Engineering Societies, of whi h the Institute is one. The sessions will be held in 11 sections and the proceedings will be published in 10 volumes of 500 pages each, of which Volume 8 will contain the papers and proceedings on Mining Engineering and Metallurgy. The membership fee of $5 will entitle the holder to the volume of General Proceedings and Index, and, in addition thereto, any other single volume chosen. Other volumes may be subscribed for according to a sliding scale depending upon the number of volumes taken. The Institute will have a meeting in San Francisco during 1915, and it is desirable for our members to join the International Engineering Congress at in early date in order that their support of the enterprise may be given in its early stages, when it is most needed.

An investigation of the creep deformation of coarse-grained high-purity aluminum at temperatures approaching the melting point permitted the formulation of a theory of subgrain formation. Subgrain boundaries were found to be formed by two different processes: kinking and polygonization. Polygonization is considered as the main factor in subgrain formation. SINCE "slipless flow" was first discussed in detail by Hanson and Wheeler,' many studies have been undertaken to determine how metals deform at high temperatures. Several types of observations have been reported. Jenkins and Mellor,² working on the creep of mild steels and various grades of commercial irons, found metallographic evidence of a kind of substructure within the grains after deformation at high temperatures. Homes" observed after creep deformation of steel at high temperatures that the original X-ray spots were sharply divided into several small ones. The same phenomenon was reported by Hirst4 from his studies on lead and later by Crussard5 from his work on aluminum. The works of these investigators demonstrated beyond any doubt that the splitting of the X-ray spots was due to the fact that the grains underwent a division into subgrains during deformation at high temperatures. Since then, numerous experiments have been undertaken on aluminum in order to determine the mechanism of formation of subgrains. Research workers can be divided, for the purpose of discussion, into two different groups as regards thinking on subgrain formation. On one hand, based on the work on polygonization by Cahn,6 Guinier and Lacombe,7 Greenough and Smith," Crussard,10,11 and Servi, Norton, and Grant," it was concluded that subgrain formation was a consequence of the simultaneous effects, first, of inhomogeneous deformation which produced bending of the lattice, and second, polygonization. On the other hand, Wood and coworkers13-16 based their work on the results of an earlier report" which dealt with crystallite size and a fragmentation theory. It is interesting to note that while Greenough and Smith8 and Wood et al. performed similar experiments, their conclusions were quite different. Wood et al. did not recognize polygonization as a fundamental mechanism and said that aluminum, at the beginning of the deformation, fragmented immedi- ately into subgrains in order to permit deformation of the metal, the number of these subgrains being a function of strain rate and temperature. They concluded that deformation of grains occurred by flow along the subgrain boundaries. In view of the contradictory conclusions, it would appear that the data were not explicit enough to provide an unambiguous conclusion. It appears that the techniques by which most of the results were obtained, namely, X-ray work, were not enough by themselves to solve the problem. Another approach was needed. In the present research, therefore, an extensive metallographic study was planned to supplement the X-ray work. The importance of revealing the subgrain boundaries metallographically was realized, and this will explain the extensive development and use of etching techniques. In order that subgrains would be considerably larger and therefore more readily visible under a microscope, the creep experiments were performed at very high temperatures approaching the melting point of aluminum. Development of Experimental Technique Creep tests were run at constant load on high purity (99.995 pct) aluminum specimens having a very coarse grain size. None of the specimens was run to fracture. According to statements by Guertler1 Smith and Hamilton were the first to study the copper-titanium alloys, but owing to the presence of large amounts of impurities their data are inconclusive. M. A. Hunter and I. W. Bacon later investigated the electrical conductivity and the temperature coefficients at room temperature. The present writers reported their results2 in November, 1930. Recently Kroll published data on copper-titanium alloys3 which agree closely with those obtained by the authors. Material Tested The titanium used was in the form of square sintered rods, the analysis of which runs as follows: titanium, 95.4 per cent; silicon, 0.7; iron,l.8; aluminum, 1.4; copper, 0.1; manganese, 0.05. The ingots were prepared in a high-frequency induction furnace in air atmosphere. Their analyses are given in Table 1. Up to 5 per cent titanium the alloys could be forged. Above that amount they were red short and broke up easily. Owing to their rapid absorption of nitrogen and oxygen from the air, the alloys with the higher amounts of titanium tend to form surface films which greatly increase the casting difficulties, especially when small masses of metal are handled. It was, however, possible to prepare sound ingots up to 25 per cent titanium. Thermal and X-ray Investigation The cooling curves of some of the alloys are plotted in Fig. 1, and R tentative diagram constructed from these data is given in Fig. 2. From this it is evident that the solid solubility of copper for titanium is approxi-mately 4 to 5 weight per cent titanium at 878" C., which is the eutectic temperature. Although a large number of X-ray photograms of cold-rolled steel have been published, two circumstances have led to the experimental work reported in this paper. The first is that no complete study, making use of the pole-figure method of Weverl, has been made of cold-rolled low-carbon steel. Wever has published pole figures of mild steel subjected to plane parallel deformation1, 2 and undoubtedly he has applied the method to cold-rolled mild steel, but the authors have not found these data published. Kurdjumow and Sachs3 have applied the method to the study of rolling and recrystallization textures in electrolytic iron; their results will be referred to later. The reason for this dearth of papers using the pole-figure method is obvious; a greater number of photograms and more analytical work (although this work is quite simple and straightforward) are required to construct a pole figure than most investigators have felt worth while, despite the fact that no other method of which the authors are aware will satisfactorily depict the orientations of the crystallites in a polycrystalline aggregate. The second circumstance that led to the work reported in this paper was the appearance of a paper by Wayne A. Sisson4 on the same subject. In his valuable study of the factors influencing the development of preferred orientations in cold-rolled mild steel, Sisson made one observation that required confirmation; that is, that at some stage of the rolling process the type of preferred orientation changed from the type that gives a photogram characterized as a "six-point" X-ray pattern to that known as a "four-point" pattern. A similar observation had been made by Tam-mann and Heinzel5, who studied the orientations developed in the rolling of steel by the specular reflection of light from the etched surface of rolled samples. These workers also found that the type of preferred orientation changed during the rolling process. The authors had some difficulty in seeing how this behavior could be consistent with modern views on the genesis of preferred orientations, particularly with those of Wever2

New expressions in the technical assessment of mineral concentration processes have been defined as Concentration Efficiency: Concentration Index: where h is the percentage of head grade; c, percentage of concentrate grade; maximum percentage of concentrate grade obtainable at 100 pct recovery; and R, percentage of recovery. In developing these expressions, the basic requirements for the technical assessment of concentration operations have been defined and the various expressions suggested by others for asses-sing the results of such operations reviewed and criticized. The derived expression for E, depends on a simple combination of recovery (R) and a new term selectivity (s), where S is (c-h)/(c,,, -h), by definition. Limitations of the new expressions are discussed and examples given of applications to concentration operations. It is also shown that the formulae for E, and I, can be applied to scatter diagrams, multi-component systems, size-assay analyses, and classification data. Many methods of quantifying concentrating operations have been proposed. These include direct presentation of weights and assays together with the derived data for other items such as ratio of concentration, recovery, rejection losses, and enrichment ratio. These terms are now accepted mineral dressing nomenclature, and in the assessment of the results of concentration processes, concentrate grade and recovery are together the most widely accepted measures of concentration efficiency. For practical purposes when the concentrate grade is equal to or greater than a predetermined acceptable value, test or operation results may be assessed by the recovery figures alone. Similarly when recovery is within specification, the operation can be assessed by concentrate grade. The ultimate assessment and selection of a concentration operation is—admittedly with a few ex-ceptions—a matter of economics. There is however an intermediate stage in laboratory and pilot plant testing when evaluations must be made without the assistance of an economic yardstick. Numerous techniques are employed to facilitate such evaluations among which may be mentioned graphical plots of grade vs recovery, cumulative weight vs cumulative recovery, scatter diagrams, etc. The desirability of combining metallurgical results and product weights and assays into a single value has been recognized and discussed by many workers1-" with the resultant suggestion and use of such terms as Metallurgical Efficiency ,' Summation Index,' Selectivity Index,'- and Absolute Efficiency B None of these expressions completely satisfies all the requirements of a selectivity or efficiency formula and it is proposed in this report to define the terms, relating to the technical efficiency of a concentrating operation, concentration index and concentration efficiency. Examples are given of their application and a comparison is made of their use in relation to other formulae. All product grades in this paper will be referred to in terms of mineral percentages and a list of symbols is given in Table I. CONSIDERATION OF EXISTING FORMULAE A number of the existing efficiency and index terms used in quantifying concentrating operations are considered below. Metallurgical Efficiency:

The mechanism by which the supersaturated solid solution of 20 per cent silver in aluminum decomposes has been reported in two previous publications.1'2 The analysis of streaks in Laue photograms showed that thin platelike particles (the so-called Guinier-Preston aggregates) form upon matrix planes in the early state of decomposition.1 The size of these particles is larger, the higher the temperature at which they form in accordance with nucleation theory;³ at all temperatures they increase in size with aging.2 When they have grown thick enough to afford three-dimensional diffraction, powder X-ray photograms show that the structure is not that of the equilibrium precipitate but that of a transition lattice . Sincc this is also platelike in shape and also lies upon the (III) matrix planes with the [IIO] direction in the matrix parallel to the [II.O] direction in it seems likely that the original platelet particles are merely in an early stage of formation, and thus finely dispersed. The atomic spacing and pattern on the (00.1) plane in y' are identical with those on the (111) matrix plane to which it lies parallel, and since comparable directions in the two planes are parallel, the lattices are thus coherent at the interface; an analogous coherence has been found in aluminum-copper alloys.3 The structures y' and y are both close-packed hexagonal and are oriented alike; they differ only in interatomic distances. Consequently, y' is regarded as y strained from its ordinary dimensions by the lattice coherency between it and the matrix.2 The lattice movements that transform the matrix to the equilibrium precipitate appear to be very simple.2 The mechanism of precipitation in this system is simpler and is more precisely known than that in any other system hence the system should be a profitable one for the difficult task of correlating property changes with structural alterations. The present report provides additional studies on powder X-ray diffraction from alloys of 10 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent Ag, and presents the correlation of crystallographic changes with changes in microstructurc, Brinell hardness and electrical resistivity of the three alloys. Preparation of Samples and Experimental Procedure The preparation of the 20.2 per cent Ag alloy has been described2 Alloys containing 9.9 and 29.7 per cent Ag were prepared from 99.97 per cent A1 and 99.99+ per cent Ag using a similar procedure. Cast X-40 alloy with the lowest nitrogen content studied had a 100-hr rupture stress at 1500°F about equal to the reported value for the commercial alloy. Increases in nitrogen content progressively decreased the rupture strength, and with about 0.1 to 0.2 pct N a minimum strength was reached, but there was no accompanying change in microstructure. Further increases in nitrogen resulted in the fomzation of progressively increasing amounts of a lamellar, pearlitic-type structure at the grain boundaries, with accompanying increases in rupture strength, and above about 0.25 to 0.33 pct N, the rupture strength exceeded the normally reported values. Two series of melts representing different melting stocks exhibited minimum rupture strengths at different nitrogen contents. This suggests that some unidentwed trace element not removed by vacuum melting has a strong influence on the response of this alloy to variations in nitrogen content. In a series of melts with manganese contents ranging from 0.6 to 3.2 pct, the material with the lowest manganese content had the highest 100-hr rupture strength at 1500°F. The manganese variations had no appreciable effect on the microstructure. CAST cobalt-base alloys such as X-40* exhibit high strengths at elevated temperatures (1500°F and above), but they also show considerable scatter in high-temperature properties. Since the design of parts for critical applications must be based on the minimum expected properties, this broad scatter appreciably lowers the design strength of the alloy. If the relatively poor properties exhibited by a few test parts from any given group could be improved, the spread in properties would be narrowed, and the design stress could more closely approach the average expected properties. The purpose of this research investigation was to learn what were the causes of these erratic properties and, if possible, to find methods for eliminating them. Earlier unpublished work showed that vacuum melting markedly influenced the high-temperature strength of cast X-40 alloy. There were indications that this behavior may have been the result of changes in the nitrogen or manganese content of the castings. Consequently, in the current investigation, the influence of variations in nitrogen and manganese content on the structure and high-temperature properties of cast X-40 alloy was studied. In this program, X-40 melting stock was vacuum melted to produce a base material that was very low in nitrogen content and in volatile trace elements. Additions were then made to this base material to produce alloys of the desired composition. The metal was cast into investment molds producing coupons which were machined into stress-rupture bars. These bars were subjected to stress-rupture tests and me-tallographic study to determine the influence of changes in analyses (nitrogen and manganese content) on the structure and properties. Material—The melting stock used for these experi-ments was in the form of shot from two master heats of commercial X-40 alloy. Only one master heat was used in a given series of melts. Thus, any differences in structure or properties that showed up in the specimens from a given series would be the result only of the intended variations in composition. THE annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A.I. M.E. is always held in New York, in con- junction with the annual meeting of the Institute in February. Business sessions, teas, dances, a theater party, luncheons, excursions, and many other interesting activities filled the four days to overflowing. In all ,216 women were present, from all parts of the United ,/ mates, and there were several from Canada. On Mon- ' day not only the visitors, but the New York members also, gathered around the registration desks, where Mrs. E. N. Wolfes, Mrs. S. J. Jennings, and Miss Georgene Davis saw that everyone was properly registered and provided with tickets to whatever functions she desired to attend. Greetings were eagerly ex- changed as friends met at the luncheon on the fifth floor, where the hostesses of the day were Mrs. J. D. Handy, Mrs. T. T. Read, Mrs. Sidney Rolle and Mrs. H. J. Wolf. In the afternoon, there were visits to art galleries and other interesting exhibits, arranged by Mrs. Frederick Laist. Mrs. W. H. Bassett was the hostess at a very delightful Thé damant at the Italian Gardens of the Ambassador Hotel. Many of the men attended this function also. In the evening the visiting ladies were entertained at a theater party, with Mrs. Wilbur Judson as hostess. The play that was seen was Gorki's "At. the Bottom."

The adsorption density of dodecylammonium ions at the quartz-solution interface has been Theadsorptiondensitydetermined as a function of collector concentration and pH. A ten thoushasbeenandfold range of amine salt concentration was covered at neutral pH. Experimental results show that over a thousandfold concentration range at neutral pH, the adsorption density (I) is proportional to the square root of collector concentration. Except at high concentrations, I increases with increases with increasing pH, but in general this effect is surprisingly small. . , . . A critical pH curve has been established for the flotation of quartz with dodecylammonium acetate. The conditions along the flotation curve are correlated with the adsorption measurements. THE behavior of collectors at the mineral-solution interfaces is usually explained in terms of an ionic adsorption process. Through the distribution of collector ions between the solid surface and the- co-existing solution phase the mineral is believed to acquire a water-repellent surface coating. Quantitative adsorption studies have been made on simple flotation systems1-4 only within the last few years. Such investigations were made possible by the adoption of the radiotracer method of analysis. As a consequence of these studies a new parameter has been added to aid the understanding of the flotation process. The research investigation to be discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the behavior of a cationic-type collector. This objective was approached through the determination of the distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz-solution interface and the solution as a function of the collector salt concentration and pH. To bring this investigation to focus on the more practical aspect of flotation research, an attempt was also made to correlate the adsorption results with actual flotation tests. Quartz: A —100 mesh ground crystalline quartz was infrasized; the products of the third and fourth cones were mixed together and reserved for experimental purposes. This stock material was cleaned by leaching in boiling concentrated HC1. After leaching the quartz was rinsed with distilled water until the filtrate showed no trace of chloride ian. It was then washed several times and dried. The qwrtz had a specific surface of 1400 cma per g as deterhined by the krypton gas adsorption method. Collector: The distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz surface and the solution phase was determined by the radiotracer method of analysis with carbon 14 as the tracer element. The radioactive amine salt with C" synthesized into the hydrocarbon chain5 was supplied by Armour and Co. The tracer element was located adjacent to the polar group. The radioactive salt as received had a specific activity of about 0.14 mc per g. When desired, dilution of this activity was effected by addition of non-radioactive dodecylammonium acetate also supplied by Armour and Co. ........ All other inorganic reagents used in this research were of reagent grade. Conductivity water was used for making up all solutions. Adsorption Tests: Two different experimental methods were used. In the first, to be designated as the agitation method, a weighed amount of quartz and a measured volume of amine salt solution were agitated in a 100-ml or 50-ml glass-stoppered pyrex graduated cylinder. The cylinder was filled with solution up to the stopper, since erratic results were obtained when an air space was left over the suspension. Time of agitation varied from 1 to 2 hr. Preliminary tests at different agitation times showed that the amount adsorbed remained constant for all agitation times exceeding 1/2 hr. After this conditioning period, the solids were separated from the solution by filtration through a Buechner fritted-disk funnel. The solution was re-circulated 10 times or more to allow the fused silica disk to come to equilibrium with it. Determinations of the amount of amine adsorbed on the frit itself indicated that this amount was less than 10 pct by weight of the amine acetate abstracted by 10 g of quartz. The funnel with quartz covered by a thin layer of solution was then centrifuged for approximately 5 min, at which time the moisture content of the solids was reduced to about 5 pct by weight. The wet quartz was blown into a tared beaker, re-weighed and allowed to dry at room temperature. A final weighing was then made to determine the moisture content. The second experimental method, similar to the procedure adopted by Gaudinand Bloecher,' will be referred to as the column method. Two liters of solution were passed through a bed of quartz contained in a Buechner funnel attached to a pyrex separatory funnel by means of a ball and socket joint. Preliminary tests showed that increasing the volume of solution above 2 liters does not give a measurable increase in adsorption. From 4 to 4 1/2 hr were required for 2 liters of solution to pass through the column. The moisture content of the quartz was again reduced to a minimum by centrifuging. A slightly modified column apparatus was used for experimenting with alkaline amine solutions. The plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, situated at Risdon on the estuary of the River Derwent, near Hobart, was designed and erected primarily to produce high-grade zinc from zinc concentrates produced by the mines of Broken Hill, N. S. W. Consequently the metallurgy of the process has been influenced in its development by the peculiar characteristics of the Broken Hill concentrate, which on treatment gives into solution relatively large amounts of cobalt, manganese and silica. The Risdon works (Fig. 1) produces high-grade electrolytic zinc, leaded electrolytic zinc, zinc dust, cadmium, sulphuric acid and superphosphate. This paper, however, is concerned only with the zinc plant and process. Roasting The roasting of raw concentrate is not a major feature of Risdon's process, and in this respect practice is unlike that of most zinc plants. The roasting is mostly done on the Australian mainland at centers where the sulphuric acid made from the roaster gases can be used for superphosphate manufacture. A small amount, approximately 40 tons per day, is roasted at Risdon, acid being manufactured from the gases. The amount that can be roasted there is limited by the acid requirements of the zinc plant and of the superphosphate plant. Roasting is not carried to completion at the mainland plants, and the product, known as preroast calcine, largely constitutes the raw material for the Risdon zinc plant. It contains about 6 per cent of sulphur as sulphide. Roasting is completed at Risdon for reasons that are set out later in this paper. The zinc plant proper is divided into four main divisions: (1) final roasting division, (2) leaching and purification division, (3) electrolytic division, (4) melting and casting division. There are two subsidiary divisions—the cadmium division and the preroast, acid and superphosphate division.

Development work in mines of St. Joseph Lead Co., Southeast Missouri, using trackless loading equipment shows definite advantages: Speed of cleaning, ability to work on steep grades and sharp crosscuts, good later tracking conditions, and possibility of wasting rock in old abandoned stopes. THE Desloge mine is one of a group of mines owned by the St. Joseph Lead Co., in the so-called Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. It has been operating approximately 40 years producing a daily tonnage ranging from 1600 to 3800, depending on various factors. On an average, the present mine is 300 ft deep with an extreme extent of 2.7 miles by 1.7 miles. Most of the present mining is in the lower horizons of the Bonne Terre dolomite, a fairly soft rock requiring no support except occasional channel iron and roof pins. Due to the contour of the underlying sandstone and porphyry, some development work has been through short stretches of these different formations. In some areas the lower part of the dolomite is quite sandy and generally is considered abrasive. Sizes and Methods of Drifting Have Changed: Development work has, like other phases of mining, changed considerably in the last 20 years, from cleaning by hand to the use of a mechanical method. The conception of a standard drift has also changed. Before the advent of mechanical loading in stopes there were many pieces of main line drift averaging 7 ft high x 9 ft wide. Now with the Joy loader and shuttle car, a 9x11 ft drift is coming to be standard size. Methods of cutting drifts have changed considerably over the last few years. Some changes in drilling equipment have been made such as reducing the weight of column, clamp, air feed, and fittings to go with the HC10 Cleveland jackhamer. Other changes have been made in drill steel such as the use of detachable bits; throw-away variety, screw type, and the tungsten-carbide insert bits. Later developments have introduced spiral-welded pipe with victaulic couplings, millisecond exploders, bulky powder, and the use of electric cap lamps. Experimental work is going on continually in various phases of development work, some to be tried and discarded, others gradually to become standard practice. To sum up, the standard method of development now in use at Desloge is as follows: The work is done on a two-shift cycle 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Two men known as development drillers comprise a crew on each shift. These two men arrive at their work about 7:30 to find a round blasted by the previous shift. After scaling down back and walls they proceed to the cleaning operation, using either a Joy loader and shuttle car, a drag hoist mounted on a slide ramp, or an Eimco Finlay to load into a 21/2 ton mine car. Cleaning may take from 2 to 4 hr depending on conditions such as length of round broken, length of haul, and other variables. After fitting up pipe and setting up columns and drills they are ready to drill a round which should measure 9 ft high x 11 ft wide and break from 5 to 7 ft advance.
