This description of the organization of the Consolidation Coal CO. is intended to include only the portion that is charged with the responsibility of the actual operation of an individual mine, although it has seemed advisable to include several of the all-division personnel, who necessarily come in direct contact with the mine officials. The Consolidation Coal Co. has a staff and line organization and, while most of the contact between these two wings is made between officers ranking above those discussed in this paper, field representatives of several of the staff departments play such an important role in the control of certain phases of activity at the mines that a true picture of the mine organization cannot be had unless these men are included. The demands made upon the producer of large quantities of coal have certainly never been so exacting as they are today. Reductions in the number of accidents and in the cost of individual accidents has passed from the category of a desirable achievement to an unqualified necessity. Although the market price of coal today is lower than it has been in many years, consumers have never been so critical of quality. This market condition is especially severe on the producer to whom one bad shipment may mean the loss of a contract. And the battle to keep the reduction of production costs abreast with constantly dropping prices wages incessantly. For the legitimate producer this situation demands a mine-operating organization that is comprehensive, versatile, efficient and economical; and it is in an attempt to meet these conditions that our present system has been designed. To say that this line-up is incapable of being improved or that it is applicable to all conditions would be to assume a degree of presumption which certainly is not intended here, but our system does meet the conditions which we are called upon to face today with a smoothness and thoroughness which we consider reasonably satisfactory. The xanthate flotation of chrysocolla can be improved by preheating the ore to 500° to 600°C. Addition of water vapor reduces the preheating temperature required. The temperature range of flotation improvement correlates well with the range over which dehydroxylation occurs. This observation is consistent with changes in the structure and properties of the mineral as detected by measurement of solubility, D.T.A., T.G.A., X-ray diffraction, and infrared absorption and with recently proposed explanations of chrysocolla flotation. A brief experiment by one of the authors several years ago showed that exposure of chrysocolla to high temperature water vapor resulted in increased recovery by subsequent xanthate flotation. Recently renewed interest in flotation and thermal properties of chrysocolla1-5 prompted further study of this effect and more detailed reporting.6 This paper explores the response of pure chrysocolla recovery in Hallimond tube flotation tests to the time and temperature of exposure and to changes in the water vapor pressure. Brief attention is paid to the effects of such treatment on accessory minerals. A single experiment with flotation of chrysocolla from an ore is reported. MATERIALS Chysocolla from Inspiration, Gila County, Ariz. was crushed in a porcelain mortar, cleaned of visible and magnetic impurities, and screened to obtain -48 +65 mesh (Tyler) material for flotation test work. The clean material contained 28.5% Cu and was identified as chrysocolla by comparison of X-ray diffraction, D.T.A., and infrared absorption data with that reported for similar materials by others.4,5,7 Samples of malachite and chalcopyrite, prepared in a similar way, were also identified by X-ray diffraction. The sources of these materials are unknown. A sample of chysocolla-bearing oxidized copper ore from Pima, Ariz. was crushed and dry ground for thermal activation and subsequent flotation. PROCEDURES Activation: The apparatus used for exposure of materials to high temperature water vapor is illustrated in Fig. 1. The furnace temperature was controlled to ±5°C Water vapor pressure was controlled by pre-saturating a nitrogen carrier stream with water in an adjustable thermostatted saturator (multiple bubbler). A water manometer and capillary orifice flow meter were used to measure nitrogen flow rates for activation and for subsequent Hallimond tube tests. Gas flow rate and temperature were adjusted prior to introduction of samples. Exposure time was measured from the moment of introduction of the sample to the furnace, hence includes an initial drop below the control temperature. After heating, the samples were removed from the furnace and stored at room temperature in air. Representative samples of activated materials were examined by X-ray diffraction and infrared absorption.

ORDERING reactions of Fe-Si compositions in the a region have been mentioned in a number of review articles.7-8 However, little is known in regard to the critical temperature, T at which this transformation takes place. Greiner and Stoughton,' in a study of the constitution of iron-rich Fe-Si alloys below 800°C, placed the onset of order at a composition of about 4 to 5 wt pct (7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct) Si. They observed that at this composition the ductility and strength begin to decrease sharply and brittleness develops. During X-ray studies they observed only the appearance of superlattice lines for compositions containing 12.5 atomic pct Si. More recent X-ray diffraction studies- etected the appearance of superstructure lines (corresponding to the calculated positions of [Ill] and [ZOO] reflections) for alloys containing 9.5 atomic pct. This fact confirms Greiner and Stoughton's original hypothesis in regard to the onset of order at compositions containing about 7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct Si. The physical properties.of Fe-Si alloys containing more than 10 atomic pct Si have been studied only to a limited extent. Their extreme brittleness and difficulties of sample preparation render them of little industrial use in comparison with alloys in the 0 to 10 atomic pct Si range. The properties of Fe-Si alloys reported to date are mostly properties measured at room temperature on ordered compositions It appears that because of experimental difficulties fully disordered alloys could not be produced in the critical composition ranges and their properties could therefore not be reported. In Figs. la, lb, and lc, a summary of physical properties of Fe-Si alloys, measured during recent investigations of the influence of silicon additions to iron, is presented. No mention of determination of the critical temperature, T for disorder could be found in the literature. The following is an account of work done in an attempt to: 1) produce the disordered state of various Fe-Si alloys and establish the critical temperature, T for disordering, and 2) compare the electrical and thermal conductivity characteristics of the ordered and disordered phases as functions of composition. Materials, Preparation of Test Samples, and Testing Methods Fe-Si alloys with high silicon contents (about 10 atomic pct) are usually prepared using powder metallurgy techniques. This method insures accurate compositions and high purity through the use of protective atmospheres during solid state diffusion alloying of the mixed powders."" Iron and silicon powders were mixed in the desired proportions, cold or hot pressed, and then homogenized at 1150°C for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hr under a protective getter and in a hydrogen atmosphere. Fully homogenized samples were quenched in water from various and successively higher temperatures to establish the critical temperature for disorder. Temperatures were determined using Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouples in contact with the test samples. Test bars were approximately 0.6x1.25x7.5 cm. Electrical measurements were made at room temperature by determining the potential drop over a 1.5 cm span for a current of 10 amp. Densities of the samples were determined by immersion. High temperature electrical resistivities were measured using previously described techniques.'" Specific heat conductivity up to 200°C was measured by heating one end of the test bar and water-cooling the other; heat conductivity was then obtained by subtracting the rate at which heat entered the water from the

A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from. Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Chino mine. The grindability of the various samples was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from diflerent locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale nonhomogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully. In the past 15 years, comminution by primary autogenous grinding has been investigated and applied economically in the minerals industry, particularly in iron-ore processing. Successful application of primary grinding is described by A. A. Dor,l.' P. B. Dettmer,334 R. R. Turner, and W. F. McDermott." other authors describing the advantages of primary grinding include H. Hardinge,' R. T. Hukki,' D. S. Coyle" and F. C. Bond,"," to mention only a few. For the past several years, Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Metal Mining Div. Research Center has been investigating primary grinding of disseminated copper ores. Both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding has been explored. Ores from three of Kennecott's western operating properties and from several development properties have been tested. Host rocks include diabase, schist, silicated and argillaceous limestones, shale, granite porphyry, quartzite, and granodiorite. The object of this paper is to supplement the general knowledge in the field of primary grinding by presenting information gained from the studies with the various disseminated copper ores. Data are presented which show that carefully considered test programs are required to determine the practicality of applying autogenous grinding to a specific mining-beneficiation operation. Particularly this is so if more than one rock type occurs within an ore body or if there are wide variations in the degree of rock alteration within a deposit. Extensive sampling and subsequent testing of the ores within a mine are required if serious pitfalls are to be avoided and good engineering data acquired. We hope that this presentation will stimulate studies to increase the understanding of the fracturing process applicable to large pieces of rock, a factor which is important in autogenous grinding. Test Facilities and Procedures Both pilot-scale and full-scale test facilities were used to investigate primary grinding characteristics of the disseminated copper ores. A 6-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, a 24-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, and a 5-ft Aerofall mill were used in the studies. The Cascade mills were operated wet, while the Aerofall mill was operated both wet and dry. The Cascade mills were operated both for fully autogenous and for semi-autogenous grinding; the Aerofall mill was operated only semi-autogenously. Fully autogenous grinding, as the term is used in this presentation, is defined as the direct grinding of coarsely crushed rock by the action of the rock mass. Semi-autogenous grinding is defined as the grinding of coarsely crushed rock with the rock mass supplemented by a steel ball charge. Most of the test work was done using the 6-ft Cascade mill, operated under fully autogenous grinding conditions. Only limited testing was conducted with the 5-ft Aerofall mill and only one ore was tested using the 24-ft Cascade mill. This presentation is concerned, therefore, primarily with fully autogenous, pilot-scale grinding in the Cascade mill. Fig. 1 presents a diagram of the test facilities used with the 6-ft Cascade mill. Principal test equipment consists of a 6-ft Cascade mill, an 18-in. spiral classifier, an elevator, a 2 x 9-ft belt feeder, a conventional integrating kilowatt-hour meter, and a recording wattmeter. In testing, feed charges, adjusted as to weight, were deposited as evenly as possible on the belt feeder every 15 min. The weight of each charge was adjusted to maintain a mill charge of 27 to 30% of mill volume. The classifier was adjusted to obtain the desired size-consist of the final product, generally at 20% + 100 mesh. After equilibrium was established in the circuit, the feed, mill discharge, classifier sand, and classifier overflow were sampled and their size distributions determined. During the sampling periods, the power drawn by the mill was measured to determine the energy consumed in the reduction of the size consist of the ore solids. Fully Autogenous Pilot Grinding Tests on Various Kennecott Ores Typical test results obtained in the 6-ft Cascade mill with samples from Kennecott's Ray Mines Div., Chino Mines Div., Utah Copper Div., and a development property designated as Mine A are presented in Table 1. THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

It is probable that the first commercial production of coal in Ohio was for the supply of Wheeling, before mines were opened at that place. This coal came from Pipe Creek in Belmont County,l where the seam was exposed a short distance above the river. This movement could not have lasted more than a few years, because coal was being mined at Wheeling in 1818, and probably before that.2 Mining began in Tuscarawas County in 1810 and in Perry County in 1816, and has been followed steadily since then. In the eighteen twenties the Pomeroy field in Meigs County, Jackson County, and the northern Ohio field in Summit County commenced production. All of the early data available are given in Table 57. No early official reports were made, but after 1859 the Secretary of State published statistics of production, admittedly inaccurate, by counties, and under various officials these have been continued to the present day. Ohio has never published statistics about coal in smaller units than the county; no reports of individual properties have ever been collected. The period from 1800 to 1885 includes the opening of practically all of the coal fields of the state, although those of eastern Ohio were not large producers at its end. During this time the use of raw block coal in blast furnaces had begun and ended, and at the end, coke was nearly the universal fuel for this purpose. Much of the coal traffic on the Ohio River and its main tributaries originated in the necessity of a fuel supply for Cincinnati and other down-river cities. This traffic started in 1794, and few records of it are available until many years later; in 1846 records of the movement to Cincinnati began and have been maintained with increasing thoroughness, and represent one of the most complete records of such a traffic extant anywhere. As these data show the originating fields of most of the coals used there, the available figures to 1885 have been collected in Table 16.

Resistive measurements ulere made on superconducting niobium single crystals in transverse magnetic fields. Crystals were grouln in both high and ulfrahigh vacua, doped with stnall quantities of oxygen, and annealed in ultrahigh vacua at temperatures from 900' to 1350°C. Maxima in the fluxoid pinr~ir~g force were observedfor the [100] and [210] directions. The increase of the critical current density with dissoved oxygen was seen to saturate at relatively low concentration. This behavior, and the variation of J, and residual resistivity (as a function of oxygen content and annealing) of both clean and dirty gassy) crystals, is seen as a consequence of the formation of clusters with (210)~b habit planes and (200)ffo common boundaries. These suboxide clusters are apparenlly stable at high temperatures and very low oxygen concentrations. It is generally known that dissolved oxygen at concentrations well below the solubility limit sharply increases the critical current density of superconducting niobium.' Such a result would not be expected if Nb-0 solutions were random, not even as the result of segregation on the scale usually encountered in solid solutions. According to the Kim-Anderson theory of flux creep,' the critical transport current density is determined by the pinning force Fp associated with some feature of the microstructure. As the Lorentz force. a or (J X R), of the transport current in the magnetic field approaches Fp, flux creep and then flux flow occur. The pinning force is expected to be quite small if the heterogeneity involved is significantly smaller than tte range of coherency which for niobium is circa 250~.~ Although the strain field of an individual oxygen atom in the niobium lattice is relatively large, it does not seem plausible that individual atoms could be so effective as to account for the data. Also, ~ramer~ found that straining and strain aging specimens containing small amounts of oxygen on occasion decreased the residual resistivity. A possible explanation for the above behavior may be found in the work of van Ooijen and van der Goot,= who found that annealing changed J, for niobium foils containing oxygen, and they attributed the changes to ordering of the oxygen atoms. This phenomenon has been observed by other investigators using X-ray and PROCEDURE Cylindrical 4-in.-diam niobium single crystals with axial orientations [ill], [110], [112], and [oo~] were grown from pure niobium, see Table I for analysis, in an ion-pumped ultrahigh-vacuum system using the electron beam floating zone technique. Total pressure during growth was lo-'9 torr: the oxygen partial pressure was less than lo-" torr, as determined by a mass spectrometer. These crystals will be referred to as the "clean" crystals. Similar crystals were also grown in another system at a pressure of 5 X 10"6 torr. These crystals will be referred to as the "dirty" crystals. Specimens 14 in. long were cut from the as-grown crystals and one end was polished down to no. 600 carbide paper smoothness. A back-reflection Laue photograph was then taken in order to fix the crystallo-graphic directions transverse to the crystal. The critical current density J,, the current density necessary to produce a voltage drop of 1.0 pv between voltage leads placed a in. apart, was determined as a function of the magnitude and direction of the transverse magnetic field and of the oxygen concentration. The technique and experimental arrangement was essentially similar to that of Tedmon et al.' In the remainder of this paper, the azjmuthal angle $ for the field H is referenced to the [ I101 direction in all four crystals, and oxygen was added in small equal increments by anodization and annealing.7 The resistivity ratio, RR, of the resistance at room ternperature to that at 4.2"K (H =7.00 kG) was determined as well.

FOLLOWING the presentation of the papers by Messrs. Mahan and Butler, the discussion printed below ensued. A. C. LANE* With particular reference to the New England con-sumer, I entirely agree with Mr. Mahan that intelli-gent marketing methods will do a good deal, but there is more than one way of improving them. For instance, coal can be shipped best to New England about this time of year-after the storms of the winter and before the movement of crops in the summer. For that reason there ought to be seasonal freight rates. This will be agreed to by most coal men if you will ask them, especially those who are connected with large concerns like the Metropolitan Coal Co., and yet they do not get seasonal freight rates partly because the railroads are afraid if they once reduce them they will never have a chance to get them back again. But it would be an improvement to have seasonal freight rates. Another thing: When we are buying in New England we want really a certain amount of heat value in our coal. There is no great advantage in our buying ash, nor is there any particular advantage in the railroad shipping ash and clogging the circulatory system of the body politic any more than clogging the circulatory system of the physical body. It would be desirable if the wholesaler, and to some extent the retailer, could guarantee the amount of ash or sell their coal on heating value. If you are interested in that you will find some interesting charts, in "Anthracite Coal Costs Analyzed," a pamphlet issued by the Anthracite Coal Consumers Association, Inc., New York City, as to rates from various and sundry points for bituminous and anthra-cite coal from the field to New York, Buffalo and Chi-cago. Here in New England they are both up against the competition of oil. About 3 or 3 1/2 bbl. oil will do the work of a ton of coal. One of my millionaire friends who is well posted on the situation is putting oil in his Commonwealth Avenue house because it is the most economical. Moreover, we can get Welsh coal from across the water (and help equalize this matter of exchange with Europe) in close competition with Penn-sylvania coal.

This paper surveys a few of the quantitative exploration models that might be of interest to an ex-plorationist seeking to apply methods of operations research to mineral exploration. A general development of each model is presented, and the model is evaluated relative to the exploration activity. Finally, a philosophy of exploration and mineral resources is presented, and a possible exploration strategy incorporating concepts of some of these models consistent with this philosophy is proposed. The high cost of conducting an effective exploration program has generated an increasing interest in methods of optimizing the allocation of the resources of a firm engaged in mineral exploration. As a step towards this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firm's operations so as to optimize its profit objective. QUANTITATIVE MODELS General: Exploration models express at least two concepts: mineral occurrence and effectiveness of search. In simplest terms, an exploration model might be formulated mathematically as follows: P(X) = F(X) . G(X), where P(X) = the unconditional probability of discovery of X deposits, F(X) = the probability of occurrence of X deposits, and G(X) = the probability of discovery of X deposits, conditional upon their existence in the search area. With these general models as a basis of reference, some of the specific exploration models are examined below. The Allais Model: DEVELOPMENT - M. Allaisl performed the first study in which a philosophy of exploration was formulated into a probability framework. His objective was to estimate the economic profitability of the exploration of the Algerian Sahara. Allais divided the Algerian Sahara into blocks of land (called cells) 10 km square and defined the random variable, X, as the number of mining districts per cell. Thus, F(X) would describe the probability of 1, 2, or n mining districts occurring within any cell of the search area. Allais reasoned that his best information as to the form of the distribution, F(X), was the number of mining districts per cell that had been found in well explored areas in the world, such as the Western States of the U.S. He found that the Poisson function produced a reasonably good fit to the distribution of districts in these explored areas: where? is a parameter, such as the average number of districts per cell. The dictionary defines 'jargon' as "barbarous or debased language". This description does not suffice. Quiller-Couch has said, it is "a kind of writing which, from a superficial likeness, commonly passes for prose in these days, and by lazy folk is commonly written for prose, yet actually is not prose at all ". The two main vices of jargon, he says, are "that it uses circumlocution rather than short straight speech", like the Babu who reported his mother's death by saying: "Regret to inform you, the hand that rocked the cradle has kicked the bucket ". Its other chief' vice is that "it habitually chooses vague woolly abstract nouns rather than concrete ones", like the newspaper statement; "He was conveyed to his place of residence in an intoxicated condition", instead of saying, "He was carried home drunk ". Jargon is "an infirmity of speech", it is not journalese, but akin to it. "Like respect- ability in Chicago, jargo4 stalks unchecked in our midst" and renders much technical writing ridiculous. It deals in periphrasis instead of going straight to the point, it loves the abstract rather than the concrete, it dabbles in words of sound rather than of meaning. Avoid it, despise it., if you purpose earnestly to write well. "III literature as in life he makes himself felt who not only calls 4 spade a spade but has the pluck to double spades and re-double." * Jargon is rampant in technical publications. RECOGNITION of the benefits to be gained from the continuous casting of molten steel into finished or semifinished products has been given by scientific minds since the very beginnings of steel plant technology. In fact, Sir Henry Bessemer is credited with the first of a long list of patents' issued by the U. S. Patent Office for a process which would accomplish this desirable end. None of these early ideas attained practical success and, as a result, the conventional method of teeming into ingot molds became an integral part of modern steelmaking operations. This procedure, although refined to keep pace with the changes which have come about in steelmaking and finishing facilities, is recognized to have inherent shortcomings which adversely affect manufacturing costs and steel quality. Interest in the continuous casting of steel persists because the process is directed toward avoiding some obvious weaknesses of conventional ingot casting. It has been recognized that should it be possible to substitute any of the continuous casting techniques under current development for ingot casting, it would no longer be necessary to make large capital investments in primary rolling equipment, the sole purpose of which is to reduce ingot castings to a form rollable on finishing mills. The results reported in the continuous casting of non-ferrous metals and specialty steels indicate that in addition to avoiding the primary rolling mills there is some basis for expecting significant improvements in yield, surface, and internal quality. Recognizing the shortcomings of the conventional procedures, the Inland Steel Co., in cooperation with Atlas Steels Ltd. and the Freyn Dept. of the Kop- pers Co. Inc., embarked upon a program to evaluate certain aspects of continuous casting in order to determine whether the process could be applied practically to an existing integrated steel plant producing 'large tonnages of carbon steels. TO assist in this evaluation a study was carried out in which several types of low carbon steel were continuously cast in an existing machine. It is the purpose of this paper to review some of the results obtained in the casting studies and to interpret the information that was obtained so as to indicate factors that must be considered in assessing operating limitations and plant capacities. Despite the early interest in the continuous casting of steel, the actual application to the steel industry is relatively recent. At present, there are about 25 operating plants casting steel, most of which have been built in the past decade. None of these plants could be classified as large in terms of the tonnages that are being processed by the major integrated steel plants. In contrast to the situation in the steel industry, there has been widespread adoption of the continuous process in the casting of nonferrous alloys, particularly aluminum and copper. As a result, much of the basic information that was required to apply the process to steel was developed in the nonferrous industries. In this respect, a most important contribution was the development of the Junghans2 system, which was initially designed for the casting of nonferrous metals and later applied to the casting of steel. Alternative methods for casting have also been proposed by Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.,'" the British Iron and Steel Research Association,5 and the Gebruder Bohler A. G.13 Each of these methods is now being used successfully for the casting of special steels in small experimental plants or in modest sized commercial steelworks.
