The system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or CO2 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modern metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100" to 1500ºC., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. Review of Previous Work The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as O2, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: 2M+G2=2MG K=(MG)2 /M2 X PG2 [I] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: MG = K1 vPG2 [2 Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: 6Cu + SO2 = Cu2S + 2Cu2O [3] K= Cu2S X (Cu2O)2 i - (Cu)6(Pso2) [4] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: K1 =V3SO2 /Pso2 or

WESTERN Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and Illinois are carrying out experiments wherein much more slate and other impurities are loaded with the coal in the mine and hauled to the surface preparation plant for removal. In general everything is sent to the cleaning plant although there may be some gobbing in the mine. No conclusions have been announced as to the effect of such a mining system on clean coal costs. Such factors as ability of the surface plant to handle the impurities, land and facilities for disposing of the impurities, and the transportation facilities underground should be considered.

ENACTMENT of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

M. H. Mueller, M. V. Nevitt, and H. W. Knott (Argonne National Laboratory)—We have reported1 the crystal structure of Ti2CU as body centered tetragonal with a. = 2.944A and co = 10.786A, six atoms per unit cell, and space groupl4/mmm(MoSi2 type). This cell is larger but definitely related to the unit cell reported by the authors. It permits definite positions for the titanium and copper atoms in the cell located as follows: 2 Cu (a) 0 0 0; 1/2 1/2 1/2 4 Ti (e) 0 0 z; 1/2 1/2 1/2 + z; 0 0z; 1/2 1/2 1/2- z where z = 0.341 The face centered tetragonal cell reported by the authors can be transformed to a small body centered tetragonal cell with flo (small bet) = ao(fct)v2 Both unit cells have the same CO. Neither the face centered tetragonal cell with four atoms per unit cell nor the small body centered tetragonal cell with its two atoms per unit cell lend themselves conveniently to an orderly arrangment of the 2 to 1 ratio of titanium to copper atoms. When the co of this small body centered cell is tripled, however, a large body centered tetragonal cell results with six atoms per unit cell as described above. We had also noted that the X-ray patterns of Ti2Cu indicated that the structure could be approximately described by the face centered tetragonal cell as reported by the authors; how- ever, there was evidence for a few additional very weak lines whose positions indicated a larger unit cell. Since the X-ray scattering amplitudes of titanium and copper are nearly equal, it is evident that it is difficult to distinguish their positions especially from X-ray powder patterns. It was therefore decided to look at a powder pattern obtained by neutron diffraction since the scattering amplitudes of the two elements are considerably different in magnitude and opposite in sign. The sample used for neutron diffraction was selected from a group of three alloys prepared by arc melting using crystal bar titanium of 99.92 pet nominal purity and 99.999 pet pure Cu. The alloys designated as A, B, and C had the following respective compositions: Ti-32.8 at. pet Cu, Ti-33.3 at. pet Cu, and Ti-33.8 at. pet Cu. On the basis of the melting losses incurred, it was established that the actual concentration of either component in any of the alloys probably did not deviate from the intended value by as much as 0.1 at. pet. The alloys were annealed for 5 days at 700°C in evacuated Vycor capsules and quenched in tap water. The metallographic structures of these alloys are shown in Fig. 1. None of the alloys contained sufficient second phase to permit its positive identification. Since alloy B contained the least amount of second phase and since its composition placed it closest to the ideal stoichiometry, it was chosen for the neutron diffraction study. The oxygen content of alloy B was found by chemical analysis to be 0.06 at. pet. This particular intermetallic compound is especially suitable for investigation with neutron diffraction since if the titanium and copper atoms have a random statistical distribution, a near null-matrix would result in which there would be practically no coherent scattering of neutrons, and hence no Bragg diffraction peaks. The Round Mountain mining district, Nye County, Ne- vada, was discovered in 1906 on claims owned by Lewis D. Gordon. Initial mining operations uncovered gold veins of spectacular richness, and within a few days of discovery, Gordon sold his controlling interest for some $87,000. From this sale emerged the Round Mountain Mining Co., predecessor of Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines, Inc., the latter destined to become the major property owner in the area. Vein mining in the district continued sporadically into the early 1930s, yielding 9.3 Mg (330,000 oz) of gold plus substantial silver credits from approximately 626 kt (690,000 st) of ore. In addition to the lode deposits, the early miners recognized the placer potential in the alluvial fan material accumulated around the west and north sides of Round Mountain itself. Intermittent placer operations were carried out for a number of years, and in the 1940s and 1950s, Round Mountain Gold Dredging Co. worked the placers under a lease from Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines. The last placer operation terminated in 1959 when it, like some of its predecessors, proved uneconomic. Total placer production for the district is estimated at 3657 km (4 million yd) of gravel containing 59 Mg (210,000 oz) of gold and possibly 2.0 to 2.3 Mg (70,000 to 80,000 oz) of silver. Round Mountain is a small hill situated on the east flank of the Toquima Range in central Nevada. The hill is com- posed of relatively flat-lying Tertiary rhyolitic ash flow tuffs, which overlie Paleozoic metasediments and Cretaceous granites. Throughout the surrounding Round Mountain mining district, most of the known gold ores occur in the tuffs, although the metasediments and granites are also mineralized. Mineralization is structurally controlled, principally by a series of northwest-trending shears and shattered zones. Vein, stockwork, and disseminated ores occur, usually containing simple quartz-pyrite-gold mineral assemblages. The gold itself is electrum, having a silver content of 30% to 40%. In September, 1967, Elwood Dietrich, a prospector and mine promoter, obtained a purchase option on the 4452 ha (1 1,000 acres) of mineral rights held at Round Mountain by Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines. The original option had a buy-out price of $1 million and was established through Dietrich's friendship with officers of Nevada Porphyry. In April, 1968, Dietrich conveyed his option to Ordrich Gold Reserves Co., a partnership created by a group of west coast investors, mostly employees of the airline industry. There- after, Ordrich invested considerable funds in trying to test and develop the property, but soon recognized the need to seek financial and technical support from the mining industry. In December, 1968, Dietrich contacted Wayne Cavender, then Regional Geologist, Southwest, for Copper Range Exploration Company (CRX) in Tucson, Arizona, and made a data presentation. Shortly thereafter, Cavender was appointed Manager of Exploration and Chief Geologist for Copper Range Co. (parent company of CRX), New York City, and he asked C. Phillips Purdy, CRX Regional Geologist, Northwest, to make an initial property examination. Purdy's one-week field study took place in March, 1969, and resulted in a recommendation that CRX pursue its investigation of the property. The presence of low-grade gold mineralization in both the alluvial gravels and in the bedrock was verifiable, but the placer was deemed to have the greater immediate economic mining potential. At that time, gold was in the $1.41/g ($40 per oz) price range. Working from Purdy's information, Cavender decided to attempt acquisition of the property, and the first in a long series of negotiations was initiated with Ordrich. Basically, CRX felt that the placer had a promising potential for several reasons, including (I) past operators had recovered free gold but not the gold contained in the pebble fraction of the gravels; (2) past operations appeared to have been ineffectively designed or managed and not costefficient; and (3) the price of gold appeared to be poised for an upward move. Negotiations with Ordrich were prolonged and difficult, with CRX competing against several ma* mining companies, but finally an agreement was reached, effective June I, 1970. X-ray diffraction was used to study the growth of antiphase domains in quenched (or "disordered&apos;? Cu3Au annealed in the range 300" to 385°C. Measurements of the long-range order parameter indicate that a high degree of order is established rapidly at these annealing temperatures. Average domain sizes obtained by Fourier analysis of the superlattice peak profiles show that antiphase domain growth is analogous to classical metallurgical grain growth (i.e.,fol-lows a D2 US kt relation). The activation energy for the growth process, 44 kcal per mole, indicates diffusion control. The anisotropy in the observed effective domain sizes from seven different superlattice peaks can be best accounted for by a configuration involving antiphase domain boundaries on {100 } and (111 ) planes, where the (100) boundary is the low-energy type, {lOO} Type I. The disappearance of the (111) antiphase domain boundary during domain growth is dif-fusion-controlled with an activation energy of 48.5 kcal per mole. On the other hand, the behavior of the parameter representing the amount of (100) Type I boundary indicates that there may be a conversion of the higher-energy boundary types to (100) Type I boundary during the growth process. THE order-disorder transformation in the alloy Cu3Au has been the subject of numerous experimental investigations over the past 40 years, most of which have involved measurements of convenient physical properties such as resistivity and hardness as a function of heat treatment. The interpretation of these data is difficult because measurements of this type have the disadvantage that they yield total changes resulting from several different atomic processes which may be occurring simultaneously. The present study was undertaken to establish by means of X-ray diffraction the kinetic behavior of one of these atomic processes, namely antiphase domain growth. In the completely ordered state Cu3Au has an L12 structure which can be described as an fcc type arrangement of atoms in which the gold atoms occupy the corner sites and copper atoms the face-centered sites. Three other equivalent unit cells can be formed by allowing two gold atoms to occupy opposite face-centered sites and copper atoms to occupy the remaining corner and face-centered sites. These four different unit cells are crystallographically related by a shift of 1/2<110>. Quenching from above the critical temperature (392°C) to room temperature retains the "disordered" structure-a "random" arrangement of copper and gold atoms having the fcc structure. Annealing the disordered alloy below the critical temperature causes ordering to occur through the nucleation and growth of ordered regions at different points throughout the crystal. These small ordered regions, each based on one of the four types of unit cell, grow by consuming the disordered material until they impinge to form a domain structure in which the domains are antiphase by a shift of 4(110). The boundaries between domains are called antiphase domain boundaries (APDB) and they have been found to lie primarily on &apos; {100} planes in highly ordered Cu3Au. Two types of APDB can occur on ( 100) planes. An example of an (001)1/2[110] shear type APDB is shown in Fig. I. Because of the layer of copper atoms separating the domains in this case, there are no near-neighbor violations across the boundary and it has a low surface ener This type of APDB will be referred to as {lOO} Type I. Fig. 2 shows an (001): [011] climb type APDB, (100) Type 11. This type of APDB can be described as resulting from removal of a (200) plane followed by a shift of 1/2<110> to bring the separated regions together. Near-neighbor violations across (100) Type I1 APDB make it a high-energy boundary. There are numerous other possible APDB configurations; however, it is only worth noting that shear type APDB can be produced on the (111) plane by motion of a normal fcc dislocation with Burgers vector 1/2<110> through the ordered structure. A (111); [110] shear type APDB is shown in Fig. 3. Again, because of the near-neighbor violations this type of APDB has a higher energy than the (100) Type I APDB.

A distribution of residual stress after plastic elongation is proposed, in which the bulk of the material is strained in compression and a very small portion in tension, This distribution is shown to account both for the X-ray observations and for the effect of plastic straining on magnetic losses in silicon steel. The regions left in compression are tentatively identified with the interiors of the sub-grains revealed by the electron microscope. THIS paper is concerned with the general problem of the nature of the residual stress which is produced in metals by plastic elongation. A particular stress distribution will be suggested which accounts for the main X-ray diffraction observations which have been made. It will also be shown that certain magnetic measurements made on silicon steel can be understood in terms of this stress distribution. X-RAY OBSERVATIONS Uniform straining of a crystal lattice (macro-strain) causes a diffracted X-ray beam to shift its position, and nonuniform straining (microstrain) causes line broadening. If a bar of metal is plastically elongated in the longitudinal x direction and then unloaded, diffracted X-ray lines are observed to be both shifted and broadened.&apos;-= Although the observed line shift indicates the presence of macro-strain, experiments have shown that no macrostrain, in the usual engineering sense of the term, exists.5"7 For example, removal of a layer from one surface of a stretched and unloaded bar does not produce curvature in the remainder of the bar 5&apos;7 Fig. 1 shows the variation of lattice strain in the x direction, as determined from X-ray line shifts, with the applied stress in the same direction. The curve ABC is the normal stress-strain curve of the material, AB being the elastic portion and BC the plastic. In the elastic region AB, the strain measured by X-rays, called the lattice strain, and the strain measured mechanically are both proportional to the applied stress, and both return to zero when the applied stress is removed. Above the elastic limit the lattice strain would be expected to continue to increase along the line BD. Actually, it increases less rapidly with respect to stress, or even decreases, as shown by BE. If the applied stress is then decreased, the lattice strain decreases along EF, which is parallel to AB. As a result, there is a compressive residual lattice strain FA after unloading. STRESS DISTRIBUTION. Since a stretched and unloaded bar does not contain macrostress, it follows that the observed line shift must be due to a special distribution of mi-crostress. Such a distribution is shown in Fig. 2, which shows the variation of the stress u, across a stretched and unloaded bar. The material is assumed to consist of two kinds of regions: regions C, stressed more or less uniformly in compression, comprising the bulk of the volume of the material and responsible for the observed diffrac-

The marketing of nonferrous metals and of the ores and concentrates from which these metals are recovered is a fascinating trade, international in character, sensitive to every change in the economic tide, and complex in its organization. Each individual metal has its own marketing mechanism; no two are exactly alike. The differences sometimes are a matter of tradition rather than of necessity, but usually they have developed because of the very nature of the problems of producing or consuming the individual metal. This description, because of limitations of space, can do no more than indicate the major aspects of the trade and touch lightly on the marketing structure of each metal. The dictionary states that a market is a "meeting of people for selling and buying." In the case of nonferrous metals this meeting may occur on a half-dozen different occasions between the time the ore has been first mined and the time the refined metal is available for use by industry; or it may not occur at all until after the metal itself has been rolled, drawn, stamped, cast, or forged into a useful semifabricated shape. To illustrate: A Chilean miner may sell his small ore production to a custom mill, which produces concentrates that are sold to an ore dealer, who finances the shipments of the concentrates to a United States custom smelter, which buys these&apos; concentrates for conversion into blister, which is subsequently refined into electrolytic copper and sold. Conversely, much of the production of aluminum is in the hands of integrated concerns that mine bauxite, convert bauxite to alumina, smelt the alumina to produce aluminum, and then fabricate the aluminum into semifinished or even finished products before title to the material changes hands for the first time. Some nonferrous ores are not converted into metal at all but are sold by the miners or dealers directly b the ultimate consumers. A good example would be chrome ores used by the chemical industry. And of course a substantial part of the commerce in nonferrous metals is in scrap, which is the reconversion into useful form of metals that have long since been mined and smelted. During the past year considerable progress was made in the exploitation of Iraq&apos;s resources, although no new fields were discovered. The principal development was the completion of the much heralded pipe line from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean, by the Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd., and the beginning of crude exports to Europe on the second of August. Official ceremonies for the opening of the lines took place in January, 1935. The line in itself is sufficient achievement under the existing natural handicaps to deserve a moment&apos;s attention. It is 1151 miles long, composed of two independent lines made up mostly of 12-in. with some 10-in. and 8-in. pipe, and extends from Kirkuk westward 156 miles to beyond the Euphrates River as a double line. From that point, near the village of Haditha inside the Iraq border, it bifurcates, one leg going as a single line to Haifa through the British Mandated Territories of Trans-Jordania and Palestine, and the other to Tripoli through the French Mandates of Syria and the Leban(on)ese Republics. The total length of the Tripoli line is 532 miles, of the Haifa line 619 miles. The line leaves Kirkuk at an elevation of 1013 ft., drops to 350 ft. at the Tigris, to 200 ft. at Wadi Tharthar west of the Tigris and again to 300 ft. at the Euphrates, rises to more than 3150 ft. at mile 451 on the central Arabian steppe along the south line and to more than 2500 ft. at mile 466 along the north line. On crossing the rift valley of the Jordan River south of Galilee, it drops abruptly below 850 ft. below sea level, requiring the use of extra heavy 8-in. pipe and a relief station to reduce the pressure. A picked group of American welders, under H. S. Austin, of the Ajax Pipe Line Co., laid the line. It is coated, wrapped, and buried 30 in. beneath the surface in solid rock along much of the route. It crosses four large rivers and wide stretches of alkaline soils. Twelve pumping stations are employed, three of which are double east of the bifurcation. Each single station houses three 500-hp. crude-burning deisel engines flexible-coupled to reciproratirig pumps. Of all natural resources, iron ore made into steel is the most important both in tonnage and value. The primary reason for the prosperity of the United States in the last century has been its pre-eminence in domestic supplies of iron ore and steel. The depletion of these reserves by two world wars and by the demand for richer blast furnace charges, as well as the constantly growing world- wide demand for steel, has fostered the recent quest for new iron ore mines around the globe. These developments have made a dramatic change in the iron ore picture of the world. It is the purpose here, however, to look briefly at the development of the United States iron ore industry, which has played such an important role in the events leading to the modern day boom in iron ore exploration.

DISCOVERY of large iron ore deposits in New Quebec and Labrador is, undoubtedly, one of the outstanding mining events of the twentieth century. To give an idea of size, the present concession is almost equivalent to a strip a mile wide around the earth at the equator. Importance of this iron ore area can best be appreciated by comparison to the famous Mesabi Range. On Mesabi, the area of favorable rock is 110 miles long and from 1 to 5 miles wide, with a, productive zone about 70 miles long. On the con- cessions the area of favorable rock in the Labrador Trough is 225 miles long and from 10 to 60 miles wide. In Quebec-Labrador, exploration already discloses that the productive zone is 90 miles long, with good chances of being extended at both ends. The Mesabi is covered generally by thick over- burden, and the iron ore deposits were found by T- test-pitting and systematic test-drilling. In Labrador and Quebec, most ore has been developed from a few surface deposits, and when it is considered that at least 95 pct of the area is covered by over- burden, and that there remains thousands of square miles of favorable territory still to be explored, it can be seen that the possibilities for developing additional ore are tremendous.

DURING the past year a survey was conducted by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to determine whether the program as laid down in past years was operating effectively. It is a source of satisfaction and pleasure to be able to report considerable headway among operating companies in putting cooperative scholarship plans into operation. In previous committee reports the pioneer work along this line by Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., has been cited. That Company now has in its employ, in responsible positions, three men who received their education under such scholarship plans. One student under a similar plan is now studying at the Colorado School of Mines.

Simple methods can be used for the determination of the residual stresses in thin walled tubing if the stresses consist of high tensile stresses at the one surface and high compressive stresses at the other surface. Such a stress distribution is approximated in sunk tubing and in deep-drawn shells. It is possible to cut sections from such articles in such a manner that a major part of the residual stress is relieved by a bending of the Part that is separated from the adjacent metal. The circumferential stress is evaluated from the change in diameter D, occurring on splitting a length of tubing (Fig. Ib) or from deflection resulting from the cutting out of a circumferential tongue (Fig. Ia) .6 The bending moment M released by such a flexure is. It is possible to cut sections from such articles in such a manner that a major part of the residual stress is relieved by a bending of the Part that is separated from the adjacent metal. The circumferential stress is evaluated from the change in diameter D, occurring on splitting a length of tubing (Fig. Ib) or from deflection resulting from the cutting out of a circumferential tongue (Fig. Ia) .6 The bending moment M released by such a flexure is. WHEN man became dissatisfied with the mere utilization of physical force and began to use weapons, he made a definite stride forward. At first he used sticks, animal bones and stones, often rudely shaped to some particularly lethal form. These devices, while crude, were moderately effective. How- ever, some of the brighter men of the tribe found that certain particularly heavy "stones" were somewhat ductile and could be hammered into more effective weapons than those previously known. Later, probably through the misuse of one of these weapons to stir the campfire, it was found that heating softened and perhaps actually melted the material. The process of annealing had been discovered! Smelting the more easily reducible metals was in all probability one of those fortuitous accidents which was followed up by thoughtful researchers who ultimately developed the technique of mixing various ores to produce bronze and even some of the nickel content alloys. The resulting products were at first lumps of more or less ductile material which could be hammered to shape, and were thus incidentally hardened by this process. The hardening of metals by alloying and cold working remained for many centuries the only known methods for improving their properties.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE practice of carbonizing steel for the purpose of case-hardening has assumed great commercial importance within the past, 10 years. Formerly, case-hardened steel was held in more or less contempt, since it. was considered a cheap substitute for tool-steel. This is no longer the case. The development of the motor-car industry, and coincidentally that of modern alloy-steels, has resulted in overcoming many difficulties formerly experienced in case-hardening. This result has been accomplished by increased knowledge regarding the analysis of the steel which would respond most readily to case-hardening, and by more careful methods of treatment of the carbonized steel. The ordinary method of carbonizing consists in packing the steel with the carbonizing-material in cast-iron boxes and placing them in a furnace at a temperature of from 1,500° to 1,900° F. for a time sufficient to give the required depth of cc case." The steel is then either quenched directly from the box, or is allowed to cool without unpacking, and finally given a single hardening-heat., or, for special work, two or three heats. During the year 1911, more than 100,000 tons of carbonizing-material was sold in the United States, at an average price of probably $55 per ton. More than 85 per cent. of this material consisted of granulated bone. Within the past four years, many manufactured compounds have been placed on the market, consisting largely of some form of carbon or carbonaceous material, with or without the addition of chemicals. Steel will absorb carbon placed in contact with it at the temperature of the atmosphere. The reaction is exceedingly slow, but. increases rapidly with increasing temperature.
