THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first' began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use .of mineral substances to their benefit, but how- ever that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans mitted through instruction in the family. At first such activities must have been merely a .minor part of the making of a-living, but in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

The Batac jig was first introduced in the US for fine coal cleaning in 1973 (Tackett, 1977; Hake, 1976). Since then, a total of six such jigs of various sizes have been installed in five US plants for a total capacity of 2346 t/h. The raw coal size ranges from 19 mm x 0 to 9.5 mm x 0-fraction sizes previously fed to heavy medium cyclones, Deister tables, or water only cyclones. Growing interest in the Batac jig as a replacement for the above equipment is due to the following reasons: • Unlike heavy medium cyclones, no magnetite is required. As a result, the operating cost of the plant is reduced. • The compactness of equipment is unique on a unit ton per hour basis as compared to other equipment. • Solid state electronic control of jig stroke length, frequency, and jig bed depth makes the equipment highly efficient. Installations of Batac jigs in the US as of June 1980 are shown in [Table 1]. Use of the Batac jig is even greater outside the US (Anonymous, 1980; Chen, 1980). Its use is not limited to fine coal but is applied to coarse coal as well, with 102 mm size in the feed (Zimmerman, 1975). In countries where consumption of magnetite associated with the heavy medium system of coal cleaning is considered a waste of iron ore resource, the Batac jig is regarded as the primary choice in the selection of cleaning equipment (Chen, 1980).

The rate of internal sulfidation of austenitic Fe-Ti alloys in H2S-H2 gas mixtures is controlled primarily by sulfur diffusion, with counterdiffusion of titanium playing a minor role. At temperatures below 1100°C, enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries becomes important. The rate of internal sulfidation at 1300°C is approximately equal to the rate computed from the sulfur diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficient of titanium in y iron has been determined from electron microprobe traces in the base alloy near the subscale interface. The solubility of sulfur in Fe-Ti alloys has been measured in the temperature range from 1150° to 1300°C. The equilibrium sulfur content is found to increase with titanium content, due to the large effect of titanium on the activity coefficient of sulfur. The Ti-S interaction becomes stronger as the temperature decreases. TITANIUM as an alloying element in stainless steels is an effective scavenger for interstitial impurities, carbon in particular. Titanium is known to form stable sulfides; however extensive thermodynamic data on the Ti-S system are not available. Schindlerova and Buzek1 have shown that the Ti-S interaction in liquid iron is moderately strong. There have been no previous studies of the Ti-S interaction in solid iron. Internal sulfidation of Fe-Mn alloys was the subject of a recent investigation by Herrnstein.2 He found the rate of internal sulfidation to be an order of magnitude greater than predicted from available solubility and diffusivity data. A satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy could not be given. In the present study, the solubility of sulfur in austenitic Fe-Ti alloys was measured using a standard gas equilibration technique. Fe-Ti alloy specimens were also internally sulfidized. The rate of internal sulfidation was measured as a function of temperature and alloy composition. Supplementary electron micro-probe measurements were made to provide additional information on the nature of the internal sulfidation process. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were alloys containing 0.12, 0.24, 0.38, and 0.54 wt pct Ti. The alloys were made in an induction furnace by adding titanium to electrolytic iron that previously had been vacuum-carbon-deoxidized. The major impurity in the alloys as determined by chemical analysis was carbon. The carbon content of the alloys averaged about 100 ppm; metallic impurities were presented in concentrations of 50 ppm or less. Specimens were made in the form of flat plates, 0.03 by 2 by 4 cm for the equilibrium measurements and 0.5 by 1.5 by 3 cm for the rate measurements. The experiments were performed in a vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction tube. In the gas train, flow rates of the reacting gases were measured using capillary flow meters. The source of H2S was a mixture of approximately 2 pct H2S in H2, which was obtained in cylinders from the Matheson Co. A chemical analysis was provided with each cylinder. The H2-H2S mixture was diluted with additional hydrogen to obtain the desired ratio of H2S to H2, and the resulting mixture was diluted with 30 pct Ar to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over Pas. The samples used in the solubility measurements were analyzed for sulfur by combustion and iodometric titration. The subscale thickness in the internally sulfidized samples was measured on a polished cross section, using a microscope with a micrometer stage. Electron microprobe traces for titanium in solution were made on several samples that had been internally sulfidized. A Cambridge microanalyzer was used, and the known titanium content at the center of the specimen was used as a calibration standard. The procedure for the microprobe measurements will be described further when the results are presented. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Equilibrium Data. Fig. 1 shows the sulfur concentration as a function of gas composition for three alloys equilibrated at 1300°C. The dashed line is based on data published by Turkdogan, Ignatowicz, and pearson3 for pure iron. The breaks in the curves are the saturation points for the alloys. The fact that the initial slope decreases with increasing titanium content indicates that titanium interacts strongly with sulfur in solution. To obtain information on the composition of the precipitating sulfide phase, the measurements described in Fig. 1 were extended to higher sulfur partial pressures. These results are shown in Fig. 2. (The initial portions of the curves are reproduced from Fig. 1.) The highest PH2s /pH2 ratio used is believed to be below the ratio required for the formation of a liquid sulfide phase. Time series experiments were used to study the approach to equilibrium in the samples. It was found that equilibrium with the gas phase was reached in less than 4 hr at 1300°C.

IN recent years considerable interest has been shown in surface-alloyed metals, particularly those of chromium (chromized steels), which have excellent corrosion [ ] resistance under a variety of severe conditions, and may undergo bending and flanging operations without spalling. An early method1 employed to produce a high-chromium case on steel was developed by Kelley in 1921. It consisted of heating a low-carbon steel in intimate contact with powdered chromium in the presence of hydrogen at temperatures sufficiently high to permit diffusion of chromium into the steel. The usefulness of this process was limited because the extremely high temperatures of 1200° to 1400°C. (2200° to 2550°°F,) caused excessive grain growth and warpage, Louenstein and Ulmer2 packed iron castings in ferrochromium and com- [ ] mon salt, and heated for approximately three hours at 930° to 1040°C. (1700° to 1900°F,). A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900° to 1000°C., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. They reported obtaining a chromized layer, 0.004 in, thick, on low-carbon steels. Later, Daeves4 established a relationship between the carbon content

CERTAIN physical and chemical properties of copper are so intimately related that a change in variation of the physical properties indicates a certain chemical change. The standard specifications of copper of the American Society for Testing Materials are based upon physical characteristics with one exception, namely, the copper contents. Certain phenomena of the surface indicate the adaptability of the metal for forging or rolling. The writer believes that it is much simpler to produce shapes that are metallurgically correct than those that are mechanically satisfactory. The appearance of the surface of the copper when cooled is considered as to its "pitch," or the general contour of the surface, and the "set," or the decail appearance of the surface of the shape. The set of the copper is, in a very large measure, directly related to the pitch; and so intimately are these characteristics connected that they are often used as synonymous terms by the refiner when he is speaking of well-refined copper. Oxygen is often spoken of as a medicine for copper, it being used to regulate the pitch.

WHILE direct measurements of the growth of precipitate particles during aging is of fundamental value, few such measurements have been made. Direct measurements by means of optical or electron-microscopy and X-ray techniques are preferred, however, many of the aging studies have been based on indirect methods such as electrical resistivity and hardness. Because of the minute size of most precipitate particles (less than 1000A) the light microscope is of limited use while electron microscopy is subject to slowness, etching problems and consequent resolution problems. It is fortunate that alloys of the Nimonic type, based on Ni-Cr-Ti-Al, lend themselves to accurate and relatively easy particle size measurements. With proper balance of titanium and aluminum, the only aging precipitate is the gamma prime (r') Ni3,(Al, Ti)2 phase and this phase is the basis of the high-temperature strength of these allos.3-6 The Ni3(Al, Ti) phase is a face-centered-cubic, ordered structure with nickel atoms occupying the cube faces. Titanium atoms can replace three out of every five aluminum atoms and when substituting do so preferentially.2 Electron microscopy has shown that during aging of most of the commercial alloys of this type, precipitate particles are unusually uniform in size and distribution, and that the volume of (r') phase is large (20 pct).4,7 The aim of this investigation was to measure the growth of (y') phase during aging. In so doing, it was hoped that a clearer understanding of the aging process would be attained. X-ray line broadening was used as the measure of precipitate particle size. This technique was selected because it can measure and average the diameter of thousands of particles in one operation. The variations in hardness and matrix lattice parameter with aging were also studied and related to the particle size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An alloy of the following composition was studied: Cr Ti A1 C Ni Wt pct 20.71 2.98 1.43 0.04 bal. At. pct 22.06 3.47 2.95 0.18 bal. The alloy, a 15- lb vacuum melt, was forged to 1/2-in. diam at a temperature of 1900" to 2200°F; was solution heat treated for 4 hr at 2000°F and water quenched; and was then aged in various ways. The ASTM grain size was 4 to 5. No (7') phase could be detected by X-ray analysis after solution treatment and electrolytic extraction. Aging was performed on 2-in. long specimens at 1400°, 1500°, and 1600°F for increasing times. One-half inch sections were removed after each time increment and were then electropolished in a solution of H3P04 saturated with chromium trioxide at a potential of 30 v and rectified with a tantalum electrode. Rockwell hardness measurements were taken using one side of the polished specimen. Matrix lattice parameter determinations were made on the other side using filtered chromium radiation references with the position of the (220) line of a silicon standard. To enable the precipitate particles of the (y') phase to be measured using X-ray line broadening techniques, it is first necessary to separate and concentrate this phase by electrolytic extraction. Extraction is necessary because the difference between matrix and precipitate lattice parameters is only approximately 0.5 pct and intensities of.the (y') phase lines are very weak relative to those of the matrix. The extraction techniques employed have been described before and found to produce a reasonably quantitative separation.398 A water solution of 15 pct H3Po4 is used at a current density of 0.5 amp per sq in. at 6 v. The precipitate particles are separated from the liquor by centrifuging and decanting and are then washed, dried and repowdered. A plot of the X-ray intensity vs diffraction angle for the (111) line of the precipitate particles was used as a measure of particle size. The intensity curve approximated the shape of Gaussian distribution function and its breadth was measured at the half height. The (220) line of a silicon standard was used to correct the measured line breadth for instrumental and other broadening errors. The Scherrer formula was used to calculate particle

Storage porosity has been considered one of the important pore geometry characteristics of heterogeneous-porosity limestones. Storage pores are only containers for fluids, in contrast to flow channel pores which both contain fluids and provide continuity for fluid flow. The concept of another geometry characteristic, "poro-striction", is presented as a second pertinent variable in describing limestone pore space. In simple terms, poro-striction is a measure of the flow resistance between storage and flow channel pores. Alternating-flow core-testing theory provides flow relationships which can be used to divide the pore space of heterogeneous-porosity media into flow channel and storage pores and to measure the "porostriction" of the latter. Experimental application of this theory to naturally occurring heterogeneous limestones shows that "porostriction" and the ratio of storage to flow channel pores can be estimated. Porostriction and porosity ratio are microscopic characteristics which should influence oil-recovery efficiencies during certain types of displacement processes. A knowledge of pore geometry should be valuable in designing or selecting the most effective oil-recovery process for heterogeneous limestones containing storage porosity. INTRODUCTION The primary and secondary recovery of oil from limestone (carbonate) reservoirs has been and will continue to be a major source of the world's supply of petroleum. Oil recovery from this type of formation is strongly influenced by the size, shape and arrangement of the pore spaces which hold the formation fluids. Therefore, it is expected that better knowledge of pore geometry would lead to design of more effective recovery processes. The concept of storage and flow channel pores has been presented as an important characteristic of limestone porosity.1 In this concept, storage pores are only containers for fluids, whereas flow channel pores are those pores which both contain and transmit the fluids. The work reported herein involves the concept of an additional pore characteristic called "porostriction". This characteristic can be visualized as the flow resistance between the storage and flow channel pores. This resistance is an important pore geometry characteristic because it determines how easily gas and oil can replenish fluids removed from the flow channel pores. Fatt and co-workers at the U. of California have studied the effect of storage porosity and a factor similar to porostriction on transient-flow response of models of porous media during a pressure build-up or drawdown test.55 These models consisted of porous sandstone cores with artificially simulated storage pores. It is the purpose of this paper to describe tests which permit the storage porosity and porostriction of actual reservoir core samples to be estimated. The tests used for this purpose involved not transient tests but, rather, an alternating-flow technique in which pressure and flow are varied according to a sine-wave relationship. This technique may offer advantages over transient methods. THE POROSTRICTION CONCEPT Before discussing alternating-flow (A.F.) tests in core samples, it is necessary to define the porostriction parameter. For this purpose attention is focused upon an elemental volume v representative of a porous medium having both flow channel pores and restricted-access storage pores. For such an elemental volume, it is considered that the storage porosity is combined to form a single pore and that the access into the storage porosity may be represented by a single capillary tube connecting the single pore to the flow channels of the elemental volume. Let the radius of the capillary tube be designated as Rc and its length as L,. When fluid flows into or out of the pore, the following equation (Poiseuille's law) relates flow rate q to pressure drop p, and the physical characteristics of the tube and the fluid of viscosity jx.

AS an evidence of the fact that mines safety is not being neglected even in the remote district of the Philippines, a short account is appended of the organization and activities of the Mambulao-Paracale District First Aid and Mine, Rescue Association, whose headquarters are at Jose Panganiban Cam, Norte P. I. The second annual miner?s safety celebration which is sponsored by the Association was held in Paracale on Sept. 2, 1940. The event is the big occasion of the year when the thousands of employees of the mines in the district meet to compete for prizes and has become a great social function as well.=

In my opinion, the explanation of the fuel-requirements involving the conception of heat available and necessary above a critical temperature, as advanced by Johnson 1 and elaborated by Howe, Raymond and others,2 affords a theoretically correct basis for such an accounting. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth a first crude attempt to construct a formula which shall show quantitatively the relation between the various factors affecting fuel-economy, and afford a means of comparing the enormous amount of data on the fuel-consumption of various blast-furnaces, at various times and under various conditions of operation. I have also applied this formula to a large number. of individual cases, and have, by its means, compared the furnace-practice of several important iron-making districts. II. DERIVATION OF FORMULA FOR FUEL-REQUIREMENTS. The general expression for the fuel-requirements of the blast-furnace, which I believe to be theoretically correct as to form, is as follows Carbon per ton of iron = Heat per ton of iron necessary in hearth above Tc./Heat per pound of carbon available in hearth above Tc. XFactor of rate of driving. +Carbon dissolved by CO2 of flux. +Carbon dissolved incidental to reduction of ore. + Carbon dissolved in pig-iron. (NOTE.-Tc = critical temperature.) A QUARTER of a century ago, a pessimistic Belgian financier in conversation with the founder of the Belgian Congo, that great ruler, Leopold II, emphasized the danger to the colony should the synthesis of rubber be discovered. The king replied, "I do not worry. The Congo has had its ivory period; it now has its rubber period. Tomorrow it will have that of its mineral wealth; eventually that of agricultural products." That "tomorrow" arrived some twenty years ago. Through her mines the Belgian Congo has survived the present depression, and her mines for the next decade will safeguard her. The Congo, in turn. is the surest foundation industrially and financially of Belgium itself. In few, if any, political units is mining as dominant as in the Belgian Congo. In 1930, 1931 and 1932 mineral products represented respectively 67.9 per cent. 70.5 per cent and 59.3 per cent, of the total exports. In 1933 for each white person in the colony, there was produced about $1,675 worth of gold, diamonds, copper, tin ore and minor mineral products and in 1930 the per capita production, notwithstanding the larger population, was almost $2,000.

(communication to the Secretary*):—Doubtless all engineers who have paid more than a casual visit to Russia have come into contact with that formidable document, the " smieta," or estimate of the Russian manager. It is an institution which seems to be inseparable from Russian mining-methods. As Mr. Shockley points out, the year's costs a agree very closely" with the figures of the smieta made at the beginning of the year. In cases which have come under my notice, I have been satisfied that there had been a good deal of " rigging" of accounts to this end. The sum spent by the manager was carefully kept down to the total of the estimate, because it was well known that no more money would be forthcoming, and when this is done it is not a difficult matter to see that the right amounts come under the right heads in the final accounts. I do not say that this is always the case, but I have come across notable instances. Looking at it from the Russian owner's point of view, I think that the balance of the argument is usually in favor of the smieta as limiting " impulsive indiscretion" on the part of managers. The Russian Mining Code of to-day leaves much to be desired, but this is thoroughly appreciated by the official world there, and great changes are spoken of for the future. In many, if not in most, cases the laws are interpreted liberally, and a great deal is left to the discretion of the district mining engineer or inspector, with whom it is necessary to keep in close touch. As Mr. Shockley points out, the officials of a mine, who are always Russians, are held personally responsible for accidents resulting to employees, quite independently of any compensation which may be made to the sufferer. This seems startling enough, but I have always found that a penalty is imposed only

If the total volume of a diffusion couple changes during the diffusion, the measurement of distance becomes ambiguous. Use of distance parameters as suggested by Hartley and Crank is discussed. For small concentration differences, the standard form of Fick's second law is retained with conventional length units and the in- terdiffusion coefficient D. It is shown how D can be calculated from experiments involving large concentration differences and analyzed in terms of distance parameters. 'The merits of incremental diffusion couples involving small concentration differences are emphasized. THE conventional form of Fick's second law for one-dimensional diffusion of component B in a binary solution of A and B is where c, is the concentration of component B; x, the distance; t, the time; and D, the interdiffusion coefficient which may depend on ca. Hartley and Crank' have pointed out that Eq. 1 applies only if the total volume of the diffusion couple does not change during the diffusion process; otherwise, the definition of x becomes ambiguous. No change in total volume takes place if the specific volume of the solution is a linear function of the weight fraction Wb, or if the molar volume is a linear function of the mol fraction N. In some alloys, however, these relationships do not hold, and then it is necessary to introduce a modified measure of distance, 4 in order to retain the general form of Eq. 1. The application of Hartley and Crank's suggestions to diffusion in alloys has been discussed by Wagner.' Relation Between Measure of Distance and Units of Concentration The definition of [ depends on the choice of units for the concentration c,, as follows: 1—If the concentration ca is measured as the weight fraction W, (or weight percent), [ = 5, has to be defined so that equal increments of contain equal increments of mass m of the solution, e.g., dm = pSdx = Sdw [2] where p is the local density of the solution, and S is the cross-sectional area in sq cm which is taken to be constant in this problem of one-dimensional diffusion." * da Silva and Mehla have demonstrated the constancy of the cross-sectional area in the usual type of diffusion couple. However, experiments involving diffusion into thin wires4, 5 may exhibit changes in cross-sectional area, and therefore are excluded from the present treatment. JAPAN'S iron and steel industry has always been closely connected with military strategy. Many years ago it became evident that the country's iron-ore resources were too small to support any extensive industry. As a result a belief in the imperative necessity of securing such resources has influenced Japan's political and economic policy in the Far East. Iron-ore developments in China are too well known to need repeating except to note that they have been rather unsatisfactory to both China and Japan. The ore deposit at Tayeh, in China, is not as large as was first believed and, though that and other sources of supply in China proper are now furnishing Japan a little more than a million tons of ore yearly, it cannot be counted upon as a large permanent source of supply. The deposit in Shantung proved so disappointing on further exploration that operations there have, so far as I know, long since ended. The operations at Pen-bsi-hu, in South Manchuria, which C. F. Wang de¬scribed in the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS for 1918, Vol. 59, were reported to have yielded 84,000 tons of pig iron in 1928 and about 50,000 in 1935, so they seem to be going back.

The Ten Section oil field is located in the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, California. about 12 miles southwest of Bakersfield in Township 30 South, Ranges 25 and 26 East. The accumulation is in a low relief anticlinal dome and has a productive area of approximately 2,200 acres. Discovered in 1936 as a result of seismic work, it was the first field on the floor of the Valley to obtain production. It had a small primary gas cap, and since its inception has been produced by depletion with controlled withdrawal from the gas cap to minimize blowthrough. STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY The Ten Section structure is an elongated anticlinal dome with flank dips of only about 7 degrees. A map of the field, now fully developed, and a composite log are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Contours shown on the map are on the top of the first zone, or Marker XA as indicated on the composite log. As shown, the field has a productive closure of only some 350 feet, and there apparently is no faulting in the reservoir. The productive measures in Ten Section are of Upper Miocene age and are known as the Stevens sand. They contain thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks which vary considerably in stratigraphic position and thickness and apparently are rather discontinuous. As a result, individual sands and shales cannot be correlated over any appreciable area, which makes it difficult to subdivide the sand body into separate zones which are distinct throughout the field. However, there are two fairly persistent siltstone bodies that at the time of development were considered to divide the productive measures into three - zones. The first, or uppermost zone is productive over the entire field and has an average thickness of 180 feet, of which some 65 per cent is sand. It had a primary. gas cap in the crestal area with an areal extent of 930 acres. The second zone has a productive area somewhat smaller than the first zone, but it did not have any original gas cap. It has an average thickness of about 360 feet, of which 55 per cent is sand. The third zone has a very limited areal extent and a maximum productive thickness of 100 feet, of which 80 per cent is sand. Recently, a deeper oil accumulation, termed the "53" sand, was discovered, but it is not discussed in this analysis. In the first and second zones the water table was at 7,980 feet subsea, while in the third zone it was at 8,080 feet subsea. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS Sand Characteristics The Stevens sand in Ten Section is hard and well consolidated, and numerous wells were cored for core analysis. Core data on four representative wells are shown, plotted beside the electric logs in Figs. 3 to 6. The average porosity is 20 per cent, with porosities ranging from 15 to 30 per cent. The Ten Section oil field is located in the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, California. about 12 miles southwest of Bakersfield in Township 30 South, Ranges 25 and 26 East. The accumulation is in a low relief anticlinal dome and has a productive area of approximately 2,200 acres. Discovered in 1936 as a result of seismic work, it was the first field on the floor of the Valley to obtain production. It had a small primary gas cap, and since its inception has been produced by depletion with controlled withdrawal from the gas cap to minimize blowthrough. STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY The Ten Section structure is an elongated anticlinal dome with flank dips of only about 7 degrees. A map of the field, now fully developed, and a composite log are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Contours shown on the map are on the top of the first zone, or Marker XA as indicated on the composite log. The specific conductance of FeOx,-CaO melts in contact with iron was found to decrease from 200 ohm-1 cm-1 for FeO, to 40 ohm-1 cm-1 for a melt containing 26.3 pct CaO at 1400°C. The temperature coefficient was positive at all compositions, but became smaller at high CaO contents. Current efficiencies for electrolysis increased from 2.5 pct in FeOx to 17.3 pct at the high CaO composition, indicating a change from predominantly electronic conduction to conduction with a substantial ionic contribution. It was shown that Ca++ ions as well as Fe++ ions carry the ionic current. A subsidiary investigation on the apparent effect of atmospheres of argon, helium, and nitrogen on the electrical conductivity showed that this could be correlated with surface temperature losses, which varied with the thermal conductivities of the gases and resulted in precipitation of metal by the reaction 3 Fe++ = 2 Fe+++ + Fe. The work described in this paper is offered as a contribution to the general fund of knowledge concerning metallurgical slags. Measurement of electrical conductivity and electrolysis are comparatively trouble -free methods for investigating molten materials, but, although these methods had been used for complex slags, it was not until the work of Bockris et al.1 that the approach of examining simple binary slag systems was employed, and CaO-SiO2, MnO-SiO2, and Al2O3-Si9 were studied. Two groups have performed work of particular relevance to the present investigation. Inouye, Tomlinson, and chipman2 studied the conductivity of wustite as a function of temperature and of the addition of 5 mol pct of a number of oxides, including CaO. They concluded that molten FeOx in equilibrium with iron is a semiconductor. Simnad, Derge, and ceorge3 demonstrated the ionic nature of liquid iron silicate slags and also concluded that, although the conductivity of FeOx in equilibrium with iron is predominantly electronic in nature, there is a small ionic contribution. The work reported here on FeOx,-CaO slags consists of three main parts, namely, the determination of the specific conductance over a wide composition range, an investigation into the nature of the conductivity through current-efficiency measurements over the same composition range, and an attempt to identify the current-carrying ions, as well as a subsidiary investigation on the apparent effect of the nature of the inert atmosphere on the conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The slags, varying in composition from FeOx to 27 pct CaO, were prepared by heating reagent- grade Fe2O3 in an ingot iron crucible with a suitable amount of CaCO3 and, in some cases, powdered iron, in air. This prefused material was then used for the runs. At the end of each run the cell was removed from the furnace and quenched by immersing the bottom half in water. After crushing, the slags were analyzed for calcium and total iron by the usual wet methods. The oxygen content was obtained by difference. Specific Conductance: Apparatus and Method. Fig. shows the experimental setup, with the conductivity cell and leads of ingot iron. The standard four-probe method for measuring high conductivities was used. In this, the potential drop across the unknown resistance is compared with the potential drop across a known resistance connected in series, i .e., same current through both resistances. Thus there are both current and potential leads to the center electrode and to the crucible, which acts as th other electrode. Both ac and dc circuits were available for the measurements; they have been described in earlier work performed in this laboratory.4,5 The geometry of the cell was such that the center electrode was equidistant from the bottom and sides of the crucible. This ensured that the current path was the same irrespective of the magnitude of the conductivity of the material in the cell. Cell constant were measured with KC1 or NaCl solutions, which have considerably lower conductivities (0.0013 to 0.25 ohm-' cm) than the slags, and this precaution in design made sure that the determined cell constants applied to the cells with contents of any conductivity. The cell-constant determinations were made with the ac measuring circuit to prevent polarization. The four-probe method eliminates lead resistance but not the resistance of those parts of the center

THE territory under particular consideration in this article comprises portions of La Plata and Montezuma Counties, situated in the southwestern corner of Colorado, and around the base of the La Plata Mountains. (See Fig. 1.) In southeastern Utah and northeastern Arizona there are several mountain systems whose origin and structure are practically identical with the La Platas so that ore occurrences found in the latter can be hopefully looked for in the former. With this assumption, there is an area around the laccolithic ranges which offers promise for a successful exploration for gold ores. Ore occurrences of the Silverton, Telluride, Rico, or Ouray Districts will not be discussed, although in these areas the Mesozoic sediments are more or less involved within the ore-bearing complex. These have been intensively studied and developed. The idea is to set forth what my mining experience has been within the largely unaltered . Mesozoic horizon which remains around the extreme bases of the La Plazas. This, until recent years, has been almost entirely neglected by prospectors and operators and, so far as similar territory in Utah and Arizona is concerned, so remains.

Radiotracers were demonstrated to be of considerable value in a study of the interaction of dithiophosphate with galena. The interaction had characteristics of both chemisorption and chemical reaction, being complex because of the nature of the galena surface. Sorption was rapid and markedly reversible, and flotation occurred at relatively small amounts of dithiophosphate sorbed.

AT THE Belmont mill, the pregnant solution is de¬livered to a 30 by 10-ft. tank, from which it is pumped to three Merrill clarifying presses of the sluice-bar type, whence it flows through the meter to the precipitation supply tank. ?The solution for precipitation is pumped by a 10 by 10-in. Aldrich triplex pump and delivered through a 6-in. line to the forty-eight triangular frame Merrill presses at the head of the mill. Zinc dust is fed in at the pump suction and the solution precipitated to 0.01 to 0.02 oz. silver. The solution flowing from the presses is tested at 1-hr. intervals with sodium sulfide. All solution is precipitated to the same value; 4J tons of solution are precipitated for each ton of ore treated and the presses are cleaned every 15 days. The product from the presses' is dumped into steel cars having steam-jacketed bottoms, in which they are dried until the moisture content is between 15 and 17 per cent. when 8. per cent. of soda and .3 per cent. of borax are added and the contents thoroughly mixed. In the case of special clean-ups, the precipitate is tested and the flux is added to meet the requirements.
