An Integrated Solid Waste Management Method for Western Macedonia, Greece

A cyanidation study was conducted on a mild refractory gold ore sample from the Central zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. Gold, at a grade of 8.00 g/t, is present as native gold, electrum and aurostibite. The ore also contains 2.8 per cent pyrrhotite, together with several antimony minerals (0.8 per cent berthierite and gudmundite, 0.18 per cent native antimony and stibnite). It also exhibits weak preg-robbing properties with 0.16 per cent organic carbon. Aurostibite, a gold antimony compound, is particularly known to be insoluble in cyanide solution. The antimony dissolves in cyanide solution to form antimonates, which retards gold dissolution. Industrial practice of extracting gold from aurostibite generally consists of producing a flotation concentrate, which is leached in a pipe reactor at low alkalinity and high oxygen pressure with about 20 g/L cyanide. The proposed new approach is efficient and allows the extraction of gold directly from an ore at atmospheric pressure and a low cyanide concentration at pH 10.5. The effects of grinding, pretreatment, lead nitrate, kerosene and cyanide concentrations have been investigated. The maximum gold extraction obtained on the ore was 87.9 per cent using 800 ppm NaCN, 500 g/t lead nitrate, 30 g/t kerosene, DO 10 ppm and pH 10.5 in 168 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.3 kg/t. The additions of lead nitrate and kerosene increased gold extraction. In comparison to a P80 of 74 ¦m, a P80 of 30 ¦m significantly increased gold extraction. Gold in solid solution in gudmundite and arsenopyrite was believed to be responsible for the unleached fraction until mineralogical analysis of hydroseparation concentrates of leach residues showed that most of the unleached gold occurs as aurostibite, either as locked grains in sulfides/sulfarsenides or as grains with passivation rims of an Au-Sb-O phase. Coarse gold was also found. Gold extraction was not sensitive to cyanide concentration from 250 ppm to 1200 ppm NaCN and high pH was detrimental. Decreasing the cyanide concentration reduced the cyanide consumption to 0.85 kg/t. The removal of coarse gold using a Knelson concentrator and a Mosley table prior to leaching increased the gold extraction to 90.4 per cent (leach residue at 0.77 g/t).

It is a great honour to be privileged to address The Institute for a second time as President and I appreciate it more than I can say. Eight years ago in Hobart I tried to cover the development of the mineral industry in Tasmania. That was a general subject. Tonight I want to be more specific - I propose to talk to you about rutile.The choice of subject for a Presidential Address is never easy. One is addressing an informed audience and the best one can do is to try to crystallize a particular subject and to present it in a form that willbe of interest to those who listen.I looked carefully at the addresses given by our Presidents over the past seven or eight years. The titles are impressive, the content excellent, and the length, as published, much greater than I had hoped.It is therefore with some trepidation that I have chosen as a subject one only of the three crystal forms of titanium dioxide. This subject is not as limited as may at first appear.There are two aspects with which I can deal - the mineral itself, which has become familiar as the major product of the East Coast beach sand operations, and the lesser-known "synthetic" product, which is the major pigment in almost all the white paints in common use today, and in cosmetics and white-walled tyres and toothpaste, and even the better types of fine papers. The synthetic form of rutile is' the "whitest"of white pigments.

"Polycom, a new approach to ore processing based on pressure comminution, is obviously a very attractive alternative to conventional processing methods.Since a full-scale pilot plant was commissioned in 1986, more than 125 commercial installations, with capacities up to 1000 t/hr, have gone ahead.Already successfully used in processing cement clinker, limestone, coal, and other minerals, Polycom high pressure grinding results in:o Significantly reduced capital costs, because smaller units can be used m new installations;o Capacity increases of up to 100% in existing facilities; and o Operating economies that include energy savings of 20% or more, and reduced wear parts consumption.1. IntroductionAutogenous or semi-autogenous mills in conjunction with rod or ball mills are used with preference for ore processing. Most ball mills are of closed-circuit design and operate with mechanical classifiers (spiral or rake classifiers) or hydrocyclones. In other words, the ores undergo wet primary grinding, since slurries are required for the downstream separation stages anyway. This paper presents a new grinding system based on high pressure comminution of ores. This grinding process allows:- Energy savings of up to 20 % or more- Capacity increases of up to 100 % and more- Reduction of wear costs- Smaller units for new installation and thus- Reduced investment costsThese advantages are highly interesting for both new installations and conversion projects, particulary in cases where an increasing hardeness of the ore, i.e. rising Bond Work Index, reduces the output of the plants or where the metal assay of the ore decreases and the capacity of the existing systems has to be increased. POLYCOM high-pressure grinding rolls have established themselves with great success already for grinding cement clinker, granulated blast furnace slag, limestone, cement raw materials, coal and other materials.Meanwhile more than 250 high pressure grinding rolls have been installed worldwide. Capacities up to 1.000 t/h with roller diameter up to 2.8 m and drive units up to 2.400 kW are installed."

"The successful introduction of new high intensity stirred milling technologies (e.g. IsaMill, SMDetritor) to the mining industry in recent years prompted Noranda-Falconbridge to initiate a study comparing these technologies to the conventional technologies of ball milling and existing vertical stirred mills (e.g. VertiMill). The study was unique in that it utilized the same material (Brunswick Mine zinc cleaner regrind mill feed), the same sizing instrument (a Malvern laser difractometer) and sampling protocol, and media size and type (for the high intensity stirred mills). The paper compares the net energy efficiency (kWh/t) of the various technologies, their power intensity (kW/m3) and product size distribution spread (P80/P20). A key finding is that media size is critical to achieving optimal performance. As part of the performance comparison, an analysis of the four methods of power measurement was made (Prony brake, shaft torque, grinding chamber reaction torque, “no-load” correction) and followed-up with an experimental test procedure using three of these methods. The findings include divergent results for power measurements and some explanations based on the observations are proposed. The direct shaft torque and Prony brake calibration methods are shown to be the methods most suitable for stirred mills.INTRODUCTIONThe motivation for the investigation reported here was the lack of a suitable comparison within the available literature of relative grinding efficiency for the emerging crop of new industrial fine grinding technologies. Such comparisons are potentially fraught with inconsistency, from ore samples and grinding media used, to testing methodology, to size measurement techniques, to the power measurements themselves. The collaboration of the industrial suppliers (at the time MIM Technologies and Svedala, now Xstrada Technologies and Metso Minerals) and McGill University (P. Radsiszewski) were sought in order to ensure as valid a comparison as possible. The work was performed between October 2000 and November 2002, led by the mineral processing group at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The paper is presented in two sections; Part A considers the different power measurement methods and a comparison of the results for the SMDetritor (SMD) technology, while Part B reviews the grinding performance of the 5 technologies investigated using the selected performance criteria."

Large deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the .manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports.' The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treatment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a 1/2-ton basic open hearth. The Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) has been carrying out a series of experiments whose principal purpose is to measure the dynamic response of rock media to large pressure pulses. Coupled with the field experiments have been theoretical calculations simulating this response. These two approaches allow an appraisal of the current ability to measure in-situ rock response under extreme conditions and also give a fair estimate of the current state-of-the-art in the area of computer calculation of the response of "real" geologic media to a large load. The area chosen for the test series is composed of a sequence of sedimentary units (shale, sandstone, and limestone) located in the Estancia Valley 45 miles east of Albuquerque, N.M. (Fig. 1). The units, which dip gently off the uplifted Manzano Mountains to the west, are essentially horizontal at the test site. An extensive geologic and geophysical investigation of the area was carried out in the form of surface mapping and seismic exploration. Numerous holes were cored and material properties were determined from tests of the cores. In-situ geophysical measure¬ments were also carried out. The experiment consisted of loading a 60X40 ft test area with a 4000-psi transient exponentially decaying pressure pulse. The pulse was initiated at one end and traveled the 60-ft length of the test bed. The test area was instrumented with acceleration, velocity, and strain measuring devices placed in drill holes to depths of 30 ft. On the basis of field observation, four principal styles of hydraulic breccia are recognised, and their characteristic features noted. In practice, hybrid styles are most commonly encountered. Numerous examples will be illustrated during the oral presentation, and the potential for definition of a formative environment is emphasised. In one example presented, it is suggested that more than 50 episodes of hydraulic fracturing can be recognised. In all cases at least sane useful conclusions can be drawn in the context of modeling for drill targets.

Por ello, se planteó la modificación del diseño Final del Tajo Chaquicocha, ya que la continuidad de estos malos resultados arriesgaba el minado de los Bancos inferiores. En ese sentido, el objetivo del presente texto estriba en lograr voladuras masivas, sin afectar la estabilidad de las paredes del Tajo Chaquicocha, así como tener beneficios económicos en la reducción de tiempo de minado por cada banco, y en la productividad (Dig Rate) de los equipos de carguío.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. ELECTROSTATIC methods are used to separate and concentrate or purify granular particles derived from ores or various synthetic and agricultural products. Compared with other separation methods that require many technological refinements, the electrostatic attraction of fibers, grass, and seeds to charged surfaces clan be accomplished under the most primitive circumstances, and the early development of this method of beneficiation seemed very promising. Precise application of the method to provide high selectivity, however, is a complex procedure, and interest in this method declined. During this period Mr. O. C. Ralston initiated a Bureau of Mines research program oil electrostatic separation. It is the purpose of thins publication to describe the development of the electrostatic method of particle separation from the early beginning to the present resurgence of interest. Most of the information for this description bas been derived from references, a few of which were not available for thorough review. Much information has been drawn from the investitions of the Bureau. Acknowledgments Mr. O. C. Ralston, former Chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, began the research program on the subject and did research on the mils literature. Both Mr. Ralston and Mr. H. B. Johnson, former president of the Huff Electrostatic Separator Co., furnished patent references. A critical review by Mr. F. D. Lamb, Research director, and Mr. M. J. A study was initiated to examine the ways in which a number of foreign countries classify and regulate metal/non-metal mines which experience problems due to naturally-occurring flammable gases. Twenty countries were selected for study, and useful information was obtained from sixteen of these. Nine countries were visited (five of them twice) to hold meetings with representatives of government mine regulatory agencies and mine operators, and to visit mines encountering methane and other gases (carbon dioxide, nitrogen). In the later stages of the study seven gassy metal/non-metal mines in the United States were visited so as to provide a basis for comparison, and hence the evaluation of both the U.S. and foreign gassy mine regulations. In addition to obtaining copies of the mining laws and regulations of a number of foreign countries, nine foreign gassy mines, and the seven in the United States were documented in as much detail as possible. All this information is presented, along with appropriate conclusions and appendices. The study took two years and three months to complete.

In 1950, about a third of the world?s population lived in cities. That figure has steadily risen throughout the following decades. Now it is believed that about 60 percent of the estimated 8.1 billion people in 2030 will be living in urban areas. The strain on infrastructure in cities in the developed world is already showing. And the rapid growth in developing nations today is adding to the shortage of materials, equipment and labor needed to keep up with this growth. So, while materials and labor may be in short supply, there is no shortage of work for the underground tunneling and space industry. In June, 718 of those professionals from around the world were in San Francisco, CA for the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME. The attendees spent the three days of technical sessions listening to international authors discuss the state of the industry, new technologies that have become available and updates on major tunneling projects throughout the world. The accompanying exhibit attracted 79 vendors, who displayed the latest in tunneling and underground space equipment and services. In addition to the technical sessions and the exhibit, the NAT featured three short courses ? ?DRB Process Update Workshop,? ?Soft Ground Tunneling Technologies? and ?Underground Blasting Technology and Risk Management.? And the post-meeting field trip to the Devils Slide tunneling project near San Francisco was sold out.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "The work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking, as carried out at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Carnegie Institute of Technology and, the Metallurgical Advisory Board, has covered a series of fundamental studies on the action of oxygen in liquid steel and the application of the findings to open-hearth operation. The staff has varied from 14 to 23 men per year, some of whom have been Bureau of Mines physical chemists and metallurgists, others research engineers of the Metallurgical Advisory Board, and the remainder graduate students employed as research fellows at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The work on the laboratory studies, and particularly on slag systems, has been in charge of G. R. Fitterer, associate metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, while the plant work has been under the direction of C. F. Christopher, research engineer of the Metallurgical Advisory Board. In all, some 16 physical chemists and metallurgists and 24 research fellows have taken part in the experimental work. Advantage has been taken of the opportunity for cooperation with the University of Pittsburg to have certain phases of this program made the subject of graduate work, particularly the laboratory studies on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys.The general method of studying oxygen has been, first, to determine the solubility of the various oxides in liquid steel. To date the solubility of Fe0 in steel has been determined, over a wide temperature range.3 The straight-line relationship in the plot of solubility versus temperature indicated that under a slag of 100 per cent Fe0 the oxygen was present in the steel as dissolved FeO. A further conclusion drawn from this work was that the solubility of FeO in the metal was proportional at a given temperature to the mol fraction of Fe0 in the slag if the slag contained a large excess of basic constituents. This result was determined from a study of the solubility of Fe0 under slags containing lime and iron oxide in various proportions. These data have been used extensively in determining the saturation of a bath of open-hearth steel under any conditions of slag composition, and results to be given later showed that the solubility curves are consistent with the results obtained in practice."

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion. In several cases, breaches occurred between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced these breaches showed that impacts to the river system were complex and varied significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as positive and negative. Several flood-plain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow reverted to active riverbeds. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers saw the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries —Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is studying the effects to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound flood-plain decisions regarding mining.
