The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. Plant for the production of sulphuric acid from pyrites flotation concentrates was commissioned at Cockle Creek during 1956, to meet increasing demands for commercial acid and superphosphate. Pyrite was chosen as raw material because of the uncertain supplyposition of imported brimstone and the desirability of utilising domestic sulphur.Desulphurisation of the pyrite is performed by two 40-ton per day roasters of the Turbulent Layer type operated under licence from the Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) organisation. These units are the first of their kind commissioned in the southernhemisphere. Pyrite is fed to the roasters in the as-received un-dried condition. Waste heat steam production is coupled with electricity generation within the plant. Sulphur dioxide is produced at comparatively high strengths and cleaned by conventional cyclone and hot electro-filter equipment.The acid unit has a capacity of 100 mono tons of sulphuric acid per day and includes cooling and wash towers, mist precipitators, a single stage drying tower, 4-pass oxidation section and absorption system.INTRODUCTIONSulphuric acid has been manufactured at Cockle Creek Works since 1913, when the first chamber nitration plant was commissioned. The raw material was brimstone roasted in Herreschoff furnaces. Since that time three additional chamber units have been constructed and have produced acid from brimstone, zinc concentrates, pyrites and -spent oxide, according to changing economic and supply factors.Three chamber units are still in operation. Contact processes have become increasingly important since the first Schroder-Grillo unit was commissioned in 1923. Six of these 5-ton per day units were operating in the mid-thirties, but have since been demolished. A weak airborne radiometric anomaly was examined in the field and the presence of uranium confirmed. Rotary-percussion drilling showed the presence of uranium but a subsequent programme of diamond and rotary percussion drilling indicated that the concentration of uranium was uneconomic. Within the tufts and volcanics of the prospect the uranium existed as uranyl phosphates within the oxidized zone. Geological mapping and the diamond drill core showed that the Stag Creek Volcanics are part of the Lower Proterozoic Masson Formation, probably with member status, rather than the expression of an Archaean basement ridge. This change in the interpretation of the fundamental structure of the Pine Creek Geosyncline has led to a reexamination of the stratigraphy and to suggestions which differ from the current concept.

Resource estimation for the West Leeville deposit is prepared using a conventional explicit approach. The geologic model is developed using interpretive methods based on visual logging. Grade shells are then prepared at low and high grade cutoffs. The low grade shell includes material of interest (Au > 0.010opt), while the high grade shell is developed slightly below the economic cutoff grade for mining. Grade estimates are made within these boundaries. This paper documents a conditional simulation study to evaluate the uncertainty contributed by both the grade shells and grade estimates. Multiple realizations are generated for the grade shells and the grades. The full combinatorial of realizations are merged to assess the uncertainty and the relative contribution of the grade shell and grades.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. The Akanvaara intrusion (surface area 50-55 km2) in Savukoski, Northern Finland, hosts 23 distinct monocumulate layers of small euhedral chromite crystals enclosed in a silicate matrix. These chromitite layers have been divided into four groups; UC (upper chromitite), ULC (uppermost lower chromitite) LC (lower chromitite) and LLC (lowermost lower chromitite). The driving force for investigating the Akanvaara chromites and their reduction behaviour originated from their very low MgO content and relatively low Al2O3 content, giving them a unique quality which based on thermodynamics should facilitate the reduction. Another interesting feature is the high amount of V2O3 present especially in the upper chromitite. The chromites included in this study are from the UC and ULC layers (24.9 and 22.7 per cent Cr2O3 respectively). To obtain a better understanding of the reduction behaviour of Akanvaara samples in comparison to MgO-bearing chromitites, Kemi chromite from the ferrochrome works in Tornio, Finland, was included in the study as a reference sample. The reduction experiments were isothermal in a temperature range of 1000-1400°C in CO atmosphere. Experiments were also conducted with coke addition in pellets and briquettes in CO/Ar/H2 atmospheres. The results of the reduction experiments complemented with microanalytical research indicate that the Akanvaara chromites do reduce to a higher degree than the Kemi chromite. Although the aim was to characterize the mechanisms of reduction focusing on gas-solid reactions, the nature and amount of the gangue minerals was such that a considerable amount of slag phase was formed, which affected the reduction mechanisms extensively. The structural features together with low MgO and high FeO content in both Akanvaara chromites are important factors resulting in better reducibility than in the Kemi chromite.

Studies were carried out to determine whether filtration rate changes observed in an iron ore concentrator were due to variations in particle shape. It was confirmed that ores mined from different locations differed in filtration rates by as much as 60%. However, when image analysis was used to quantify the shapes of the individual particles in the filtration feed, it was found that the particle shapes showed almost no variation, and the shapes did not correlate with the filtration rate. It was also determined that the filtration rate variations were not caused by changes in particle size distribution. These results suggest that the differences in filtration rate are due to factors other than size and shape, such as surface chemistry.

Augercast piles are formed by drilling a continuous-flight auger into the ground and, on reaching the required depth, sand-cement grout or concrete is pumped down the hollow stem as the auger is withdrawn. The sides of the hole are supported at all times by the soil-filled auger, eliminating the need for temporary casing or bentonite slurry. The augercast piling method is fast and economical; there is no vibration, very little noise and, if executed properly, no ground displacements during installation. The method is well suited to sands which are easy to drill and are readily transported up the auger. Relatively little attention has been given to augercast piles in the literature which might be part of the reason for the considerable variations in local practice, building code requirements and design methods. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the features of augercast pile installation that are known to influence both the structural and geotechnical capacity of the pile, to evaluate several empirical design methods and to look at some important aspects of quality control of augercast pile installation.

The paper reviews recent investigations of the impact of corrosion on the performance of both plain and coated Swellex rock bolts. It addresses the problems associated with estimating and predicting corrosion rates of friction bolts, and based on field data it suggests an empirical relationship to predict corrosion rates. A review of the necessary qualities for a protective coating leads to recent experience with coated Swellex bolts that suggest that they can contribute to extending the useful life of Swellex bolts in potentially corrosive environments.

One way to ensure dragline productivity is by Increasing the size of the dragline bucket. In August 1994, Optimum Colliery in conjunction with Van Reenen Steel, Northwest Applied Technology, SSAB of Sweden and Barlows Equipment launched the new lightweight dragline buckets. Optimum built the first prototype bucket that was used for the deslgn for future buckets. After knowledge had been gained from measuring the input force of the bucket Northwest Technologies designed the new bucket with finite element analysis. Together with the knowledge of quenched and tempered steel from SSAB of Sweden and Barlow Equipment, the new Wrightech bucket was born.

"Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. A cut-off wall has been designed and is currently under construction along the Back Dam of the existing tailings impoundment at Red Dog Mine, Alaska. The cut-off wall, which will be in the order of 5,000 ft long and up to 150 ft deep, when complete, is being excavated using a 40 metric ton Bauer trench cutter head mounted on a Liebherr crawler crane, in combination with a closed loop slurry pumping and de-sanding system. The tailings impoundment is situated in an area of warm permafrost and high potential seismic activity. Design incorporated an assessment of rock jointing to define the final depth of the wall along the alignment requiring the use of plastic concrete backfill to address the concerns associated with potential cracking of the wall due to settlement and during seismic activity. The results of the geotechnical investigation program, particularly with respect to variation in rock hardness along the wall alignment are discussed, as are the design criteria for the plastic concrete backfill, the challenges faced during construction, including scheduling of the work with the on-going dam raise activities of the mine, and the lessons learned with respect to potential productivities and selection of cutter wheels and teeth. Also described are the requirements for and advantages of utilizing a slurry boosting system to meet pumping requirements, re-design of the plastic concrete mix to consider workability and optimization of cutter teeth configurations to reduce wear through highly varied rock hardness.

In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. When asked to lecture at Bendigo on the geological factors that determine the depths of ore deposits, I hesitated for a little before agreeing to lecture on the theory of deep ores in the city world famous as the pioneer of deep gold mining. If there be one place, wherein the conditions of deep-seated ore deposits should be sufficiently well understood, it is the city where the 180 mine made its bold plunge to previously neglected depths; and where the record of that famous mine has been broken by the skill of the managers, and the pluck of the proprietors, of the New Chum Railway and Lazarus mines.In the face of such practical triumphs, theoretical discussion may seem a waste of time, especially since it is often dedared that the existence of such deep-seated ores was denied by geological theory. This assertion is, however, startling since the oldest and best supported geoiogical theory of ore deposits, has taught for more than a century tliat ores must descend far below the regions of practical mining. This charge against Victorian geologists is generally based on opinions attributed to the late Sir Fredrick McCoy. It has been repeatedly affirmed that he declared that gold cannot occur pelow a depth of 300 feet. But so far I have not been able to discover that McCoy ever made any such assertion or ever held such a view.

Aruba, formerly a. part of the Netherlands Antilles, separated on January I, 1986, and became an autonomous part of the Netherlands. Full independence of the island from the Netherlands is scheduled for 1996. In this chapter, however, Aruba's statistics are included with those of the Netherlands Antilles. Tourism continued to be the main industry of the island, which continued to depend heavily on imports, mostly from the United States. During the year, the Government was preparing legislation to regulate the exploration of oil deposits in the relatively shallow sea around Aruba.

"In 1991, local prospector C. “Mickey” Clement recovered at least three alluvial diamonds from the Michipicoten River. Two of these stones were sent to the Department of Mineralogy, Royal Ontario Museum, where they were identified as industrial-grade diamonds with weights of 1.05 and 1.13 carats. Both stones were described as frosted and graphiteinclusion riddled.In 1995, prospector Sandor Surmacz and geologist Marcelle Hauseux discovered diamonds in bedrock approximately 20 km north of the Michipicoten River. An 18.1 kg bulk sample of a xenolith-rich lamprophyre, taken from an outcrop at the side of the Trans Canada Highway north of Wawa, yielded 1 macro diamond and 5 micro diamonds. All but one was gem quality (Sage, 2000).Since then, more than 36 occurrences of diamonds in bedrock have been reported in an area approximately 30 km2 in size, centred 20 km north of the town of Wawa. The occurrences are hosted within a sequence of unusual, Archean-aged, heterolithic breccias previously considered to have no economic significance. Ten kimberlite occurrences also have been confirmed in the Michipicoten greenstone belt in the last five years. Two of these kimberlites are diamondiferous.To date, expenditures on property acquisition and diamond exploration in the Wawa are estimated at CDN$120 M.This paper summarizes the geological observations made on these occurrences and describes the relationship between the occurrences and the regional geology."
