The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

Systematic practices for protecting crops from frost damage began in the United Metes more then 40 years ago when the Weather Bureau Fruit-Frost Warning Service was organized; however, various practices employed in frost protection are centuries old. Although there are areas where little doubt exists as to whether protection is needed, there are also circumstances where there is some doubt as to the need for frost protection. Many factors influence this, including not only critical temperatures but also the maturity dates of the crops relative to marketing. Critical temperatures for frost damage to trees, plants, blossoms, and fruits very with weather, plant variety and nutrition, and stage of growth. In the case of truck crops, a single night of protection from frost injury might yield big dividends with a variety of sweet corn or tomato that matures early while price is high yet be worth very little with a midseason or late-maturing variety. Consequently, it is the individual grower who must decide whether to use frost-protective measures on the basis of his returns, the quantity and quality of his crop, the marketing situation, the sensitivity of his crops to frost damage, and the frequency of damaging frost in his area.

Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. The preparation of separate zinc concentrates and lead concentrates from these samples, and their assaying, was conducted by Mr. Evan Hardy, for the North Broken Hill Mine, and its assodated leases, and by Mr. D., Swan, under the direction of Dr. J. Laboratory and field tests during the past five years indicated considerable variation in the penetrating power of commercially available gun perforators. Many of the guns which achieved inadequate penetration in these tests have since been improved. However, recent productivity tests indicated the possibility of inadequate penetration or, at least, ineffective penetration in some wells. Laboratory experiments under simulated well conditions have demonstrated considerable plugging of the perforations, apparently as a result of factors associated with the shooting process and/or the drilling mud in the well at the time of perforating. The restrictions to flow per unit of hole depth caused by this plugging appears to be greater for jet perforators than for bullet guns of comparable diameter; however, because of the greater depth of penetration obtained with the jet guns, the total flow rates appear to he approximately equal. Limited testing with an experimental shaped charge suggests that less shot hole restriction and greater flow rates may result from larger-diameter perforations or other factors related to charge design. INTRODUCTION Gun perforating has been accepted for a number of years as a routine well completion method which is often preferred since it permits more selective operation of producing zones. Nevertheless, questions have continued to arise as to the effectiveness of the communication paths established between the productive formation and the interior of the casing. The basis for these questions has generally been failure to obtain anticipated fluid production rates through gun perforated completions in specific wells. These low productivities, together with the frequent recovery of bullets from well bores, were considered strong evidence of inadequate penetration. Laboratory investigations of the penetration performance of many of the bullet guns available as late as 1948 gave support to these indications. Subsequent electrical analog studiesl,2,3 indicated that the depth of penetration required to provide productivities equivalent to open hole was beyond the capacity of most bullet perforators evaluated in the early laboratory penetration tests. These results, together with the advent of the shaped charge in the field of oil well perforating, stimulated the interest of both oil operators and service companies in gun development. Improvements in gun design resulted in jet and bullet guns which appeared to be capable of providing sufficient penetration for most perforating jobs. However, some wells failed to yield satisfactory fluid production even after being perforated with the more powerful guns, again raising the question as to the effectiveness of the perforating operation. This fact, together with preliminary shooting into targets prepared with formation cores, indicated that factors associated with the perforating process and/or the fluids in the well bore at the time of shooting may reduce effective formation penetration and thereby decrease well productivity. These laboratory and field data prompted another phase in the investigation of the effectiveness of gun perforating: a program to determine the extent and seriousness of perforation plugging under simulated well conditions.

Depletion of coals most suitable for metallurgical fuel has made necessary a general survey of coking coal reserves in the United States. These investigations were begunn 1948 at the joint request of the Munitions Board, Department of Defense, and a number of coal companies. This report, which is one in a series, by counties, describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Harlan County, Ky. From these data it is possible to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke, (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered to be potential sources of metallurgical fuel regardless of preparation.

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

ASBESTOS is a name applied to a group of naturally fibrous minerals. As indicated in a later section devoted to a detailed discussion of the early history of asbestos, the tern may be defined as a. fibrous form of serpentine or amphibole. It does not include fibrous forms of other minerals, such as wollastonite, nemalite (fibrous brucite), or the fibrous forms of calcite or gypsum. A material that has the characteristics of silk or cotton and at the same time will not burn is unique. Because it combines these qualities with other advantageous properties, asbestos has specialized uses for which no substitutes are yet available. Asbestos furnishes a major raw material for a great variety of essential products and their manufacture constitutes a vast industry. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products. The value of such commodities manufactured in 1952 exceeded $332 million. They are not only of vast importance to budding construction and industry but axe absolutely, essential to certain important fields of use, for example, steam packings and friction materials, such as brake-band linings on automobiles.

Continuing progress in a petroleum and natural gas research program of world-wide significance makes it difficult to pinpoint accomplishments within definite time limits, and it is helpful to look back as well as forward in attempting to introduce and summarize the petroleum work of the Bureau of Mines in the fiscal year 1953. The 1952 report2 / indicated progress in a long-range program applicable in large part to both defense and peacetime requirements. The present report indicates a continuation of that program, modified partly by new demands and interests of government and industry, and is highlighted by a number of significant contributions to the knowledge of petroleum and natural gas and their production and utilization. The intent of the program was clearly epitomized in a statement made near the end of the fiscal year at a general conference of Bureau of Mines personnel where the record was critically reviewed:

I know they have worked very hard in selecting the various committees, who in turn - by the looks of our program have gone all out to prepare material that should be of great interest to us. I trust we will be attentive to the subjects presented and freely enter into the discussions, also relating our problems and experiences. I am sure this will prove both profitable and beneficial to all present. "The main purpose of these conventions is to become acquainted with each other, renew old acquaintances, talk over our problems, and have a little fun and relaxation from our every day routine. "Let us not forget the manufacturers, the distributors, the operators, or the press because it is through their splendid support that this organization is successful. I am mindful, at this time, of two very good members from my home state who have passed away, Walter Wetzel, a former president of this institute, and Lee Alger, at the time of his death, Vice-President from Utah. IN every country economic circumstances prescribe the method used to produce a commodity at lowest cost. In Pennsylvania a man's wages for working 4 hr buys a ton of coal wholesale; in Germany a laborer must work 40 hr, or ten times as long. In western Europe, therefore, conservation of fuel is of primary importance, and recent practices of burning lime and cement differ from those employed in the United States. This paper presents data collected during a trip through western Europe in 1953. Considered uneconomical, shaft kilns for burning cement disappeared in the United States two generations ago. But because required capital investment is low and operation greatly improved, shaft kilns are still used to some extent in Europe, where fuel costs are high, and are even included in designs for plants under construction. During the last 50 years shaft kilns have been maintained at the same physical size, while their output has been increased at least four times.

Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. A proposed design for a plant is given, INTRODUCTION This work was conducted by the Rare Metals Branch as a part of research on zirconium at the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratories, Albany, Oreg., under the guidance of S. To insure domestic production of aluminium for, essential civilian and defense uses, the Government, under authority of the Defense Production Act of 1950, programed and promoted an aluminum-expansion program that will more than double the primary production capacity that existed in 1949. In view of this vastly increased production, the raw materials, with respect to both quantity and sources, are reviewed. The raw-material consumption pattern, the requirements during an expansion period when excess quantities of materials for starting up new facilities are consumed, and the probable requirements for production of 1.7 million tons per year of primary aluminum are discussed. The raw materials that presented the most difficult supply problems were bauxite, electrical power, and fluoride salts, and the supply pattern for these materials probably will undergo changes. A major part of the electrical energy for the increased capacity was to come from thermal generation, Jamaica-was to become a major source of bauxite, and synthetic fluoride salts were replacing natural cryolite in increasing quantities. Other raw-material requirements discussed are: Soda ash; lime, and limestone; starch; filter cloth; fuel; alumina; the carbonaceous materials, green and calcined petroleum coke, high-and low-temperature pitch and coke or anthracite; cryolite; aluminum fluoride; the materials going into production of synthetic fluorides, acid-grade fluorspar, and sulfuric acid; and labor. INTRODUCTION The raw materials for the aluminum industry that have received the most publicity are bauxite, the ore that supplies elemental aluminum, and electrical energy, the means by which aluminum oxide is reduced to metal. A number of other important materials are, however, required in large quantities in the production of primary aluminum metal.

Each year hundreds of mineral specimens and numerous inquiries regarding tests and analyses of minerals and related inorganic substances are received by the Bureau of Mines. In response to this demand, in years past Information Circulars were published containing a list of laboratories. This paper is a revised version of Information Circular 7523, The listing has been changed from a regional basis to one of States arranged alphabetically and grouped by cities, again alphabetically, with Alaska and Canada listed at the end. All the services given at these laboratories are listed on one page for convenience and brevity. This list is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein are recommended over any other nor can the Bureau of Mines vouch for their results.

Applications are described of various methods for determining the weight concentration and physical properties of solid and liquid impurities of gases in connection with problems encountered in synthesis-gas production. Of special interest among these methods may be listed: 1. A method developed for determining, the weight concentration of solid and liquid impurities in. hot, crude synthesis gas containing a high concentration of moisture. 2. A method developed for the same purpose but for highly purified synthesis gas or atmospheric air. 3. A method for obtaining a uniform dispersion of dry duet or, a microscope slide for particle-size determination or other purposes.

The exposures resulting from development work, following on the discovery of a new shoot of hIgh grade ore at the north end of the Sardine tin mine, during 1952, have provided an unusual opportunity to study the oxidation of a stannite-rich ore. Through the kindness of C. C. Morton, Chief Government Geologist of Queensland, an exactly located suite of specimens representative of the exposures was supplied by J. and W. Reddie. This was later supplemented by a number of specimens culled from a parcel ofrepresentative ore submitted to the Melbourne Ore Dressing Laboratory for testing.The Sardine tin mine, near Ewan, Queensland, has been the outstanding producer of the Kangaroo Hills Mineral Field. Since its discovery in 1918, up to 1952 it has yielded about 1,500 tons of cassiterite concentrates, and about 85 tons of stannite concentrates. The outcrop ore averaged 35% tin oxide, but the grade declined with increasing depth, and by 1930 had fallen to 7% tin oxide. In the northern section of the mine the ore shoots show a downward passage to complex primary s.ulphide ore, containing cassiterite and abundant stannite.The orebodies occur in a series of fissures in a crushed zone about 50 ft. wide in slates and quartzites that have been intruded by granite (Connah, 1952). A quartz porphyry dyke forms the footwall of the original main lode in its southern part, being traced' from the surface to' the No. 4 level (173 ft. vertical depth), and two narrow dolerite dykes were encountered in the workings north of the main...

The theory and practice followed by the Bureau of Mines in investigating electrical equipment4/ made for service in gassy mines are of particular interest not only to manufacturers but also to those organizations that deal with safety anal inspection at the mines. This publication purposes to discuss the theory upon which tests of equipment in explosive atmospheres are based and to consider inspection and other matters pertaining to investigations made by the Bureau in ascertaining whether a machine merits approval. The material in this report is taken from an earlier bulletin,5/ which is row out of print, and has been revised and brought up to date to make the information again available to manufacturers, inspectors, and others interested in the development of safe equipment.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value.
