Since the Eocene, New Guinea tectonics have been driven largely by the south-westerly-directed collision of accreted arc terranes with the northern margin of the Australian Craton, and subsequent westerly-directed transport of these exotic terranes by left-lateral strike-slip fault systems. The subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath north-eastern New Guinea in the mid- to late-Miocene led to magmatism and related gold-copper porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Maramuni arc and the formation of the Frieda River, Nena, Wafi-Golpu and other deposits.The development of the world-class porphyry and epithermal deposits in the Medial New Guinea magmatic belt, including Grasberg, Ok Tedi and Porgera, is localised by dilational zones formed about the intersections of north-easterly-trending, reactivated basement faults and north-dipping reverse faults related to the southward progression of the Papuan fold belt during the Late Miocene to Pleistocene. These deposits probably formed during short mantle-derived magmatic episodes in zones of regional isostatic uplift, which are attributed to the delamination of the lithospheric mantle beneath New Guinea.CITATION:Garwin, S L, 2015. The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia.Testing methods include boring by hand, with percussion rigs, with auger and pit digging drills, and by vibro drilling.Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling and sample dressing. A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and somerelevant taxation provisions are discussed.

"This is an account of the expansion of Texasgulf's Timmins concentrator by the building of a fourth circuit.The original capacity of the mine and concentrator was 3.6 million tons per year of ore. In 1974, Texasgulf decided to increase that capacity by about one third to 4.8 million tons per year. It was planned that the increased capacity would be available by mid-1978.The expansion involved work at the rninesite, increased railroad capacity, and a new circuit in the concentrator, and it is the concentrator expansion which is described here.In 1974, the minesite drew its ore from the open pit. The pit was being phased out and was to be replaced by No. 1 mine. To allow for the expansion, a second mine was required. The railroad was capable of handling 18 car trains. Its capacity had to be increased to 27 cars per train and this, in turn, required two new locomotives. Each of these alone cost half a million dollars.The concentrator building in 1974 contained the concentrating equipment and miscellaneous services (such as machine shop, warehouse, analytical lab). The grinding and flotation sections were divided into three circuits ('A', 'B', & 'C'). 'A' and 'B' circuits treated copper-zinc ore and 'C' circuit treated the much more difficult copperzinc- lead ore. This 'C' circuit had been modified over the years to implement improvements in the metallurgy."

THIS paper proposes to give a general description of the pumping and other machinery in use at the Thames Hauraki Pumping Station, situated on the Thames goldfields of the North Island, New Zealand. An idea of the general arrangement of the pumping engines and pumps can be obtained, together with a certain amount of detail, by reference to the illustrations. The history of the pump is rather interesting, and is as follows: -In 1894 the Government decided that a subsidy of £1 for £1up to an amoUllt not exceeding £25,000 be granted towards the erection of suitable machinery to exploit the Thames low levels.With a guarantee of such assistance a company was floated in London, with a capital of £300,000, to develop several properties at Thames. As the old Queen of Beauty Company had produced bullion worth £400,000 prior to closing down on account ofa breakdown to its pumping gear, their shaft was chosen as the site of the principal work. As soon as the company was floated, operations were commenced at the Queen of Beauty shaft, situated at the entrance of the Waio-Karaka Creek, and not more than about half a mile distant from the principal mines on the field.

The process of electrostatic separation was developed in the late 19th century, but did not make much headway for about 25 years. High dc voltages, of the order of 20 kilovolts, are involved, and the only means of obtaining such voltages at that time were by the use of frictional machines, such as the Wimshurst. These were not reliable, for two reasons:-a. If a spark discharge occurred it took an appreciable time before a steady voltage was again attained.b. In damp weather the machines were almost useless.In the first 20 years of the 20th century the advent of mechanical and vacuum-tube rectifiers led to promising developments of 'the process. In the early 1920's flotation became widely used commercially, and proved to be more reliable, and capable of wider application, than electrostatic separation. During the last 15 years or so, with a better knowledge of the fundamentals forming the basis of the process, electrostatic separation is beginning to compete with flotation, especially in the treatment of smallsizedgranular material, such as beach sands. Electrostatic separation can be, and is, widely used in many cases where flotation is impossible, such as in the cleaning of food products which must be kept dry.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

The thermal properties of manganese raw materials such as ores, sinters, and briquettes, are among the many factors that determine the amount of energy needed for processing. Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, conductivity, and apparent specific heat capacity of solid samples and compacted powder samples of manganese ores were examined from room temperature to 1000 °C. The effect of porosity (of the materials used) on the thermal properties was also investigated. The laser flash method and a pushrod dilatometer were used.

AN EDITORIAL on the Strike Situation in the Coal mining industry in the New York Evening Post of Nov. 4, 1919, gave what purported to be statistics of the Department of Labor, for a period of two weeks, which showed an average for the year, based on these two weeks, of 32% hours per week. This mode of arriving at the number of hours per week, while not accurate, is not so far off from the facts as to call for any special comment. The report of the U. S. Geological Survey, Department of Coal Statistics, give so the number of days worked in 1917 as 243; reducing the same to hours per week, assuming 8 hours per day, shows a weekly operation of mines at an average of 36J4 hours. But this assumption is not exactly correct, for the reason that it is not very often that the miners work the full 8 hours per day. There are many explanations for this, but it is not pertinent to this statement to discuss them now, as the important thing to consider is whether a 30-hour week would be for the best interest of not only the men themselves, but the public or country in general.

NO STRANGER phenomenon exists in the American mining industry today than the so-called bootleg anthracite industry in Pennsylvania which now produces probably close to 15 per cent of the total hard coal out- put of the State. Instead of being what - was first thought to be a temporary condition, countenanced because of the desperate condition of some of the miners at the depth of the depression. it is thriving now as never before. Re- ports of it have penetrated all over the world, as exemplified by inquiries concerning it in Durban, South Africa mentioned by John C. Cosgrove in his article in the July MINING AND META LURGY.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

In my experience, nothing helps me better to get off to a good start in preparing a paper or a talk than a copious consultation with a comprehensive dictionary. I also feel defining the perimeters of a particular subject is helpful to the listener and reader. Sometimes thus precisely defining even the most common of words is helpful. Our general topic this morning as all of you know is "Transportation of Industrial Minerals." The definition of transportation given by the dictionary which I think is appropriate here is: "Systems and modes of conveyance of persons or goods from place to place." Our preceding panelists have outlined for you the state of the art inso¬far as systems and modes of conveyance from place to place are concerned today via rail, water and motor. My assignment is somewhat different as indicated by my topic, "The Traffic Manager in an Industrial Minerals Operation."

The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.

In the latter part of the 1980?s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation an application for FeMn production was developed. Now when Tornio FeCr-plant is considering the expansion the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand of better working conditions. The possibilities to respond to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control of the process even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

At the Palabora Mine, the transition to caving 400 m below the bottom of the 800 m deep pit resulted in a slope failure of the North wall that began in 2003, and is still mobile. This failure can be explained by the daylighting into the cave zone of a prominent joint set. The failure was modelled by the 3-dimensional code 3DEC, which is capable of modelling the nonlinear behaviour of discontinuum materials with large displacement.
