The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining research program at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), includes the areas of coal mine dust control and monitoring, and explosion prevention. One very important project at PRL is development of a continuous recording person-wearable respirable dust monitor. This Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) is a respirable dust sampler and gravimetric -equivalent analysis instrument that is part of a belt-worn mine cap lamp battery unit. Prototypes were successfully tested in the laboratory and in four underground coal mines. The PDM testing demonstrated that it was convenient to wear and use, robust, and provided accurate and timely data. NOSH is also conducting research in the program area of coal mine explosion prevention, suppression, and mitigation. Aspects of this research program include: full scale explosion research, laboratory scale research, frictional ignition of methane, mine ventilation seal construction, prediction of coal mine methane emissions, mine monitoring systems, flame cutting and welding operations, spontaneous combustion, and emergency preparedness.

Titanium bearing resources can selectively be chlorinated at temperatures below 200°C if the Ti02 in the feed is nitrided before chlorination. However, the nitriding reaction is highly endothermic, requires highly reducing conditions, is only thermodynamically favourable at elevated temperatures, and is affected by mass and heat transfer restrictions. At the required processing conditions, problems might also be experienced with sintering and with melting of slag forming components in the raw materials. A test programme was undertaken to study the effects of raw material type, temperature, gas composition, bed depth, carbon to raw material ratio and residence time in order to simulate conditions required for scaling up a nitriding process. In contrast to previous experience with low-grade titanium-bearing slag containing about 30% Ti02, ilmenite and chlorinateable slag do not form melting phases under the studied nitriding conditions and hardly sintered at all. Both feed materials can readily be nitrided with conversions in excess of 90% at temperatures around 1300°C and using bituminous coal as reducing agent with fixed carbon in excess of 1.1 times the stoichiometric requirement. The conversion decreases as the bed depth of the feed material increases and the N2/CO ratio in the gas decreases. Analysis of the relative rates of mass and heat transfer into the reacting beds of ilmenite and slag showed that the heat transfer rates are more limiting than the mass transfer rates. In order to increase the throughput that can be achieved in a kiln, it would be necessary to take special measures to enhance the heat transfer rates into the mass of reacting material. One such a measure is to pre-form the mass of reacting material into thin-walled, hollow brick shapes prior to introducing it into a kiln. Depending on bed depth, temperature and N2/CO ratio, required residence times in the high temperature zone of the kiln can vary between about 6 and 10 hours. Nitrogen exists in two broad categories commonly designated as elemental nitrogen and fixed nitrogen. Elemental nitrogen is found in nature as a diatomic molecule and constitutes about 78%, by volume, of the earth's atmosphere. Fixed nitrogen is a common term used for nitrogen that is chemically bound to other elements. Although elemental nitrogen is very abundant, nonleguminous plants cannot utilize nitrogen unless it is in the chemically combined form. The content of this chapter is confined to fixed nitrogen since the uses and properties of elemental nitrogen and the fixed nitrogen compounds are different. Bacteria associated with legumes are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen, but not to the extent or in the locations required by modem agriculture. The need to use fertilizers containing fixed nitrogen compounds to grow food crops has been recognized for hundreds of years, and from antiquity farmers have used organic wastes such as animal manures, vegetable wastes, sewage sludge, fish scraps, etc., containing these compounds for fertilizers. The organic materials have a low nitrogen content, however, and cannot support large-scale food production. Known commercial-size deposits of natural nitrates containing much higher nitrogen content exist only in Chile, and the possibility of the discovery of other significant deposits is remote. The Chilean deposits were the major source of nitrogenous fertilizers until about 1913, when the Haber-Bosch process for the production of synthetic ammonia was developed. In the Haber-Bosch process, nitrogen reacts with hydrogen, at high temperatures and pressures and in the presence of a catalyst, to form ammonia. At present Chile is the only country in the world with a nitrate mining industry, and, although the mining of natural nitrates is an important industry in Chile, natural nitrates are relatively unimportant, worldwide, because of the adoption of fixed nitrogen processes. The relative amount of the world demand for fixed nitrogen that is derived from natural nitrates has declined in recent years and will continue to decline. Modern farmers are sophisticated in economic calculations such as cost to benefit ratios and, for the most part, they purchase plant nutrients which give the highest return on their investment. Natural nitrates cannot compete on a fixed-nitrogen cost basis with anhydrous ammonia and its derivative products. In a limited sense, the fixed nitrogen industry is mining the air. Modern plants use air, water, and, in most cases, natural gas to produce the ammonia that is now the key building block of the fixed nitrogen industry. To present an accurate picture of the industry, this chapter on nitrogen follows a format somewhat different from that of other chapters in this volume.

THE work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of, the Ordnance Department, U. S. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. PART I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elements, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600° C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-steel forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.

Flotation collectors for sulfide minerals has been traditionally based on xanthate, thiophosphate, thiophosphinate and thiocarbamate, all derived from sulfur chemistry. Tecflote™ is a new family of patented collectors based on nitrile chemistry which can supplement or replace thiol collectors, depending on the ore types. A steep grade-recovery curve typical of Tecflote™ collectors was observed when using Tecflote™ as the main collector for the rougher and cleaner steps allowing a better recovery compared to current thiol collectors while maintaining the desired grade. Additional recovery increase has also been observed by the addition of scavenger steps using Tecflote™ collector in combination with current thiol-based collector. The selectivity seen in the lab is transferred to full scale trial and is clearly seen in the rough flotation where the increase in the rough concentrate grade of 5% after pumping Tecflote S11 directly into the tank cell. The mechanisms for Tecflote’s selectivity towards sulfides are currently under investigation and will be discussed. Results of TOF-SIMS analysis will be presented, demonstrating the collector’s selective affinity to different mineral surfaces in flotation. INTRODUCTION The history of collectors used today started in 1882 when Zeise first made xanthates. It was first used in flotation in 1925 – Cornelius Keller’s first patent (Fuerstenau, Jameson, Yoon, 2007). Between 1928 and 1930 American Cyanamid filed 7 patents for dithiophosphate, including flotation and chemical synthesis of the reagent, the first of which was filed by Christmann in 1928 (Christmann, 1933). Synthesize of thionocarbamates for mineral flotation was filed in 1954, by Dow Chemical Company (Harris, 1954). Now that the head grades have been declining over the last decades the need to find more selective collectors to extract difficult and complex ores has pushed the industry to look at different chemistries. Thiol collectors standard to the industry rely on the sulfur in the collector molecule to bond to the mineral surface. The electronic property of this group is modified by the adjacent chemical groups, such as additional S, P or N have the effect of changing the selectivity of the collector (Wills & Finch, 2016). In the case of xanthate the length of the hydrophobic group also has an effect on the selectivity with some minerals such that the ethyl xanthate is more selective against pyrite and pyrrhotite than the long chain xanthates (Wills & Finch, 2016).

The completion of the first two open hearth furnaces in the new No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla will increase Australian production of steel by 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.The paper gives an outline of the essential features of open hearth design and auxiliary equipment required to operate the two modern open hearth furnaces at present being installed.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for steel required by Australian secondary industries led to the decision to construct and operate No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla. Two basic open hearth furnaces of the most modern design are under construction and it is anticipated that these units will be commissi.oned in September 1956. Australian steel capacity will thereby be increased by approximately 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.PLANT LAY-OUT AND CONSTRUCTIONIn the design and lay-out of this plant the emphasis has been on efficient material handling with simplicity of design and operation. Soon New York City will have a new train station. A tunnel project is under construction to extend Line 7 to a new station that is located near the Jacob K. Javits Con-vention Center. This is also part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment project that is intended to aid redevelop-ment of the west side of Midtown Manhattan around the Long Island Railroad?s Caemmerer Railyard. The station, or ?cavern? as it?s called by those excavating it, will be the portal for that growth. In the city, public transportation means high-rise residential proper-ties will have better access to the business district, and those outside the area will have greater access to event facilities ? two factors that are critical for development investment.

MORE THAN 30 MILLION EMPLOYEES each year are exposed to hazardous occupational noise, and approximately one-third of them develop permanent hearing loss (NSC, 2000). Possible explanations for the latter statistic include worker regard for noise as a mere nuisance rather than as an occupational safety and health hazard, and consequent neglect of established protective measures (e.g., hearing protection); lack of knowledge concerning noise; improper use of hearing protection; worker indifference; and inadequate training (Bauer & Babich, 2004). Many drill rigs generate high sound levels, which vary according to the type of machine, its location with respect to the physical surroundings, and the location of the sound measured around the rig. A NIOSH study measured noise output from several types of drill rigs during field investigations (Ingram & Matetic, 2003). Two types of data were recorded the actual noise generated by the drill rig at various positions around the rig and the noise to which the drill operator was exposed during the drilling cycle. For the latter, sound level measurements up to 120 dBA were recorded while hammering casing (metal on metal) in drilling a water well (Photo 1). Several types of administrative controls exist to address worker exposure to loud drill rig noise. Rotating duties to decrease exposure time and posting warning signs in high-noise work areas are two such controls. Another is the use of hearing protection. Worker use of hearing protection has been disappointing, however. One study by the University of Michigan found that construction workers used earplugs and earmuffs only between 36% and 61% of the time that they were necessary (Lusk & Kerr, 1998). In a 2001 study, OSHA reported a relatively low rate of 30.4% for use of earplugs among construction workers (Walker, 2001). Why are rates for hearing protection use so low? One explanation may be workers' lack of concern for noise in the workplace. They expect workplace noise to be a loud and in¬ evitable nuisance and, therefore, accept it as part of the job. As a result, they disregard proven measures that can protect their hearing. Other workers may use hearing protection, but do so improperly. They may misguidedly remain in high-noise areas for extended periods thinking they are protected when in fact they are not. Other reasons for low use and/or misuse of hearing protection include poor education, lack of awareness and inadequate training (Nash, 2003). To address the training issue, NIOSH developed two exercises from which drillers can learn about noise, hearing loss and hearing protection. Unmodified pneumatic rock drills may have noise levels of 115 to 130 dB at the operator's position. Experimental modifications have been made to a standard drill to suppress the noise from the three main sources: the air exhaust noise, the noise radiated from the drill, and the resonance noise of the steel drill rods. A prototype model developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, operates at a noise level below 100 dB. A close-fitting case and muffler unit, consisting of a metallic skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber and having a durable cover, provided both muffling and noise absorption. Damping alloys were used at strategic points in the drill. Drill steel resonance noise was reduced by a constrained-layer treatment on the outside of the drill rod. The singular and combined effects of the treatments are presented in detail.

The development of a noise attenuated compressed air driven fan is described. The fan, which employs the jet reaction principle, possesses blade extension pieces which penetrate into an acoustically treated annular chamber. The dominant noise source, namely the air jets, is thereby partially suppressed. In addition, the increased moment arm of the jets leads to an improved propulsion effect which contributes to the improved aerodynamic performance of the unit.A typical measure of the improvement of this type of auxiliary mine ventilation unit is a 4 per cent increase in efficiency and a 10 dB (A) drop in sound level for a fan duty of 0·5 kPa and 1600 litre/s. This degree ofattenuation corresponds to at least halving the loudness level, a subjective noise measure.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss is the most common occupational disease in the U.S. and of paramount importance in the mining industry. According to data for 2006 from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Continuous Miner operators accounted for 30.2% of underground mining equipment operators with noise doses exceeding the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). This figure becomes more significant considering that 49% of the 2006 national underground coal production was extracted using continuous mining methods. Thus, there is a clear need to reduce the sound radiated by Continuous Mining Machines. The first step towards efficient noise control of a Continuous Mining Machine requires identification of the various noise sources under controlled operating conditions. To this end, a 42-microphone phased array was used in conjunction with 4 reference microphones to sample the acoustic field of a machine in the Hemi-anechoic chamber of the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These data were processed using a frequency-domain beamforming algorithm to obtain acoustic maps of 5 sides of the machine. The focus of the test was on the conveyor noise since previous studies showed that operation of the conveyor is the most important contributor to the sound radiated by the machine. From the acoustic maps, the following potential areas for noise control were identified, and included: chain-tail-roller interaction, chain flight tip-side board interaction, and chain-upper deck interaction.

Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

A number of novel solutions have been proposed in recent years as alternatives to props and tie-backs in deep excavation support e.g. Adekunte (2008), Deschamps et. al. (2008), Adekunte et al. (2010) and Adekunte (2014). A number of these non-standard restraining solutions involve the construction of permanent or temporary vertical or raking buttress piles that are rigidly connected to the excavation support wall at regular intervals along the wall run. This paper chiefly focuses on the design and construction of twin-vertical buttress piles as restraining systems behind or in front of embedded retaining walls. The system essentially relies on the push-pull mechanism that develops between the twin piles, to maintain the overall stability of the excavation support. The paper’s main areas of concentration include; finite element modelling, geostructural design, construction procedure, instrumentation and monitoring that are associated with the application of twin- buttress pile systems. These are supported with project details of three recently completed high-end luxurious residential developments in Greater London, England, on which the twin-buttress pile system was used to restrain the excavation support walls for the basements on the sites. The mode of application of the system varies across the three sites. While the system was adopted as a long term solution behind the retaining wall on one of the sites, it was designed and constructed for temporary use in front of the retaining walls on the other two sites. Instrumentation and monitoring results from all the sites show the non-traditional system to be safe and effective, whilst having significant beneficial effects on construction programme, sequence of works and project cost.

There are numerous methods currently available to assess the integrity of drilled shaft and ACIP piles. Each method has its advantages and limitations. This paper will compare the various available methods as well as introduce a new method for assessing integrity of drilled shafts and ACIP piles. This new method, known as Thermal Integrity Profiling, determines the integrity of the shaft both inside and outside the reinforcing cage by measuring the hydration temperature of the concrete along the length of the shaft. These temperature measurements can be made by either passing a thermal probe through a standard Cross Hole access tube, or from embedding thermal wires within the shaft. This Thermal Integrity Profile method will be described in detail and one case history will be presented. Additional testing methods which will be compared include low strain Pile Integrity Testing and Cross Hole Sonic Logging. Advantages and limitations for each method will be discussed.

Renovation, rehabilitation, restoration and expansion of existing residential, retail, commercial, hospital facilities and historic structures requires assessment and evaluation of foundation systems of various ages. The concept of demolition and reconstruction in urban areas is often more challenging, costly, and even prohibitive in some cases due to historic regulations. The authors have been involved with numerous projects related to existing foundation assessment and retrofit, including: hotel and hospital expansions, historic Art-Deco hotel renovations and expansions, garage structure expansions, additions to prominent auction houses, casinos, printing facilities; high-rise structure foundation retrofitting; forensic evaluations of existing building and highway structure foundation systems, and marine bulkhead sheeting systems. The use of non-destructive testing techniques, high-strain dynamic load testing, full scale pile cap load testing and 3-D laser scanning technology has proved to be vital in the assessment and evaluation process, as well as design of foundation retrofit alternatives. This paper presents various methods and techniques to facilitate a phased approach for optimization of existing foundations and subsequent re-use of foundation systems. These methods and techniques are illustrated through the author?s experience and selected case histories from projects with varied foundation and geologic conditions.
