The production of oil and gas in Arkansas is confined to two distinct and widely separated regions of the state; namely: (1) South Arkansas in the Gulf coastal plain, where 49 fields-many containing two or more reservoirs or pools-yield oil, condensate and gas from beds in the Cretaceous and Jurassic, and (2) Northwest Arkansas, a part of the Arkansas Valley, where only dry gas is produced in 21 fields from sandstones of Pennsylvanian age. Exploration during the year 1945 centered largely in these two producing regions, but some of the geophysical surveys were made and wildcat drilling was done a considerable distance outside these regions.

The CISDI-GreenEAF innovatively applies the top-side-chute for charging for improving the cold zone of electric-arc furnace (EAF) requiring preheating scrap. It can greatly reduce the operating power consumption during EAF melting by combined use of fume for preheating scrap. The enclosed charging mode and specially-designed structure contribute to less emission of dust and fume during charging while enhancing the metal yield. Thanks to the extraordinary fume temperature control at scrap preheating procedure and fume quenching technology as developed by CISDI, for restraining the regeneration of dioxin.

"As part of the mining engineering curriculum, students are required to be placed in industry for vacation work or work-integrated learning (WIL). In this paper we review work-based placement as done at the four South African mining schools: the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of South Africa.Key aspects of past and current WIL (pre- and post-graduation) practices that may need attention are highlighted for consideration by all universities that provide professional qualifications. Work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, workplace learning, and simulated work experiences are discussed as legitimate approaches to WIL.Regardless of the choice each institution makes, commitments of universities, preparedness of university teachers, and the desire for equity and excellence will play an important role in the provision of WIL.DefinitionsAccredited Qualification: a qualification awarded on successful completion of an accredited programme.Advisory Boards (or Committees): are essential infrastructure for a WIL curriculum that is built on the integration of the workplace and the university. This requires the collaboration of experts from both environments. Workplace advisors are critical to the success of the academy as they embody expert knowledge of the ‘real world’.Assessment: the process of determining the capability or competence of an individual against standards by evaluating performance.Category: a mode of registration defined in or under the ECSA Act which has a distinctive purpose, characteristic competencies, defined principal routes to registration, and educational requirements.Experiential learning: (in South Africa sometimes used synonymously with work placement or cooperative education) is a term used with a great variety of meanings in the international literature. More broadly, it may refer to learning that has meaningful learner involvement. It is the process of generating meaning from direct experience. In the international literature, experiential learning is learning through reflection on doing, which is often contrasted with rote or didactic learning."

The support of intersections in coal mines remains an important safety issue, mainly because the large diagonal span compromises the stability of the roof. This structural weakness is further exacerbated if the intersection is developed incorrectly, the pillar corners fail or the crosscuts are angled (not perpendicular). This report details the current support systems used and investigates unplanned falls of ground in intersections in coal mines throughout the United States. A possible failure mechanism is proposed and some suggestions are made to improve the effectiveness of the support in these vital areas.

"Abstract - A heavy mineral survey of beach and dune sands including geochemical analysis for trace elements was undertaken to evaluate the economic potential of the sands and to understand the nature and distribution of the heavy minerals relative to potential source rocks. Results indicate that heavy minerals are generally derived from outcropping volcanic rocks that comprise a proportion of the hinterland in the south part of our survey area. The most abundant minerals are magnetite and pyroxene. The morphologies of the heavy mineral grains are angular to subangular, suggesting that they were transported short distances from the source rocks. Factors controlling heavy mineral distributions include wave and wind action, proximity to provenance, the fluvial drainage network, and longshore currrents.The most economically important mineral is ilmenite. Zircon and rutile concentrations are relatively minor and thus have lower economic potential."

Lime is used extensively in the various industries. The National Lime Association in an excellent and recent bulletin lists 23 important in- dustries in which lime plays a vital role; and it thereby justifies the statement that "Lime is one of the most versatile and widely used reagents in the chemical and industrial world." There is, however, one application of this "universal" reagent which has not been mentioned. It is the use of lime in the flotation of ores. An appreciable percentage of the lime produc- tion is consumed by ore-dressing plants. The uses of lime throughout all the industries are more or less re- lated, but "lime" is a broad term; the varieties of lime are more mumerous than the limestones from which it is made, and its use involves a complicated technique. The interrelated application and growing importance of lime in flotation warrant this additional publication on the various "limes," with emphasis on those uses related to the function of lime in flotation. ཁྐྲ་ Lime in water treatment, cyaniding, and amalgamating will be men- tioned, after which its use in flotation will be taken up. This compendium was prepared by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.

This paper on the square-set system of mining embodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the Bureau of Mines general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the paper were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from Information Circulars prepared by consulting engineers to the Bureau on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The square-set system of mining is very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the United States. It is mainly employed for extracting relatively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and-fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50 per cent of the ore may be extracted by square-setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage is mined yearly by square-setting, principally in the Western States.

The production of iron and steel and non-ferrous metals by pyrometallurgical processes will remain a critical element in meeting the demand for materials in both developed and developing nations. Given the important need to reduce and minimise greenhouse gas emissions the technological focus of future pyrometallurgical R&D by universities and industry alike must concentrate on sustainability issues such as improved energy efficiency, recycling and waste minimization. Continued efforts are also needed on process optimization and new process development with a view to reducing capital and operating costs of the new large “mega” plants. Using the academic and industrial backgrounds of the authors, the present paper reviews the current status of R&D in pyrometallurgy in university departments with a particular emphasis on sustainability issues. The role of industry and government laboratories is also reviewed although primarily for developed countries. The paper also includes comments and suggestions on the future requirements for education and R&D in pyrometallurgy in developed countries to maximise sustainability. It is also suggested that future R&D in pyrometallurgy will be even more concentrated in developing countries – most notably China.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

Since its formation in 2004, the Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf (EMEPC) has been collecting hydrographic, geological and geophysical data to support the extension of the continental shelf beyond 200 NM. In 2008, the EMEPC acquired a 6,000 m rated ROV named "Luso" and has been cooperating with several national and international institutions to increase and improve its operational capabilities to conduct research on deep-sea minerals. The Portuguese continental shelf corresponds to a broad area of the seafloor encompassing different physiographic domains: the mid-Atlantic ridge system, abyssal plains and numerous seamounts. From 2008 to the present, the mid- Atlantic ridge and seamounts have been the most visited sites with the ROV "Luso". Several hydrothermal vent sites are known to occur along the mid-Atlantic ridge to the south of the Azores archipelago and mostly within the Portuguese EEZ. Vent fields were also discovered in the extended continental shelf, namely the Rainbow and the Moytirra sites located to south and to the north of the Azores archipelago, respectively. The most studied seamounts correspond to those forming the Great Meteor chain and the Madeira- Tore rise. All these visited sites are related either with the occurrence of polymetallic sulphides or cobalt rich Fe-Mn crusts and the opportunities to further pursue their exploration will be discussed.

The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. When pumping abrasive slurry mixtures, special attention must be given to pump design and construction. The second article in this two-part series describes some design features to consider when selecting centrifugal slurry pumps. Hydraulic Design Most centrifugal pumps are conventionally designed to achieve the desired hydraulic performance at the highest efficiency and lowest cost when handling clear fluids in reasonably clean environments. Manufacturing limitations are not imposed on the configuration of the pump, since conventional materials such as cast iron, bronze, and stainless steel are used. Manufacturers and buyers usually select the highest specific speed commensurate with the lowest cost attainable. Part life is almost infinite. When a centrifugal pump is designed for slurry service, the important factors in pump design are wear and materials of construction; size and efficiency assume lesser importance. The pump must operate at low rotational speed and the impeller has to be a truly radial flow design. These factors immediately determine that the pump must be of a low specific speed design in the range of 600 to 1800. The specific speed is a type number that is constant for all geometrically similar pumps; it designates the geometry of the impeller and casing. [ ] where n = rpm, Q = flow (US gpm), H = total head (ft), and Ns = specific speed. Since wear is a function of velocity it can be shown that for a given head and capacity, wear will increase with increased Ns. Centrifugal Pump Casing The casing has a profound effect on performance. If designed incorrectly it can destroy a large part of the energy given to the flow by the impeller, resulting in low efficiency, high hydraulic forces, and excessive wear on both the casing and impeller. In a conventional spiral volute, the static pressure around the impeller is uniform only when there is a free vortex velocity distribution in the volute, i.e., when the spiral flow from the impeller coincides with that of the volute spiral. This occurs only at the best efficiency point (BEP), between the pump's best operating zone and over capacity zone. Departure from the free vortex velocity distribution in the volute at partial or over capacities produces circumferential pressure gradients at the impeller periphery, which is directly proportional to the specific gravity of the mixture being pumped. At partial or over capacities, the flow will not tolerate the abrupt deflection at the tongue and severe energy losses and wear are created near the casing throat and on the impeller. Concentric and semi-concentric volute designs produce uniform static pressures at the impeller periphery and make the pump, much less sensitive to "off"' BEP operation. Hydraulic forces and wear are considerably reduced-eliminating the tongue prevents abrupt deflection of the flow, turbulence is minimized, and the velocity in the casing volute and throat is reduced. Good efficiency is sustained over a wider operating hand. Casings of this design are easy to cast. • Spiral volute (conventional)-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and the volute area constantly increases. • Semi-concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant within a certain angle. • Concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant through 360°. The degree of concentricity must be reconciled with efficiency, hydraulic radial load, and wear for each specific speed chosen. Up to 1200 Ns the casings can be fully concentric without sacrificing too much efficiency. Above 1200 Ns, the casings can be semi-concentric. The angle of concentricity

As a part of its overall wealth in fuel resources, the United States possesses large reserves of coal of ignite rank. According to recent estimates of the Federal Geological Survey (3, 5),l/ the assured lignite reserves of this country amount in total to over 463 billion tons, equivalent to 24 percent of our total national coal reserve on a tonnage basis and 15 percent on a heating-value basis. Distribution and relative amounts of United States coal and lignite reserves are indicated in figure 1. By far the largest proportion of our lignite reserves, over 95 percent is found in North Central States, principally in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, in the vast coal-bearing structural grouping designated as the Fort Union formation. Of the remaining United States reserves, all but a fraction of 1 percent are found in a series of relatively scattered deposits in Texas.

The dramatic rescue of nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped nearly 90 m (300 ft) underground for77 hours probably would not have happened without the high technology equipment and improved mine rescue training techniques available today. By now, most everyone has heard the story of the accident that occurred at the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, PA. At about 9 pm on Wednesday, July 24, the miners were drilling coal in the room-and-pillar mine. Their drilling accidentally punched through to the adjacent, abandoned Saxman Mine. Old mine maps of the Saxman Mine led Black Wolf Coal, Quecreek’s owners, to believe they were between 60 to 90 m (200 to 300 m) away from the abandoned mine. Those maps proved to be inaccurate.

Studies were made on the projectile impact sensitivity of explosives by subjecting explosive samples to the impact of metal projectiles fired from a 0.50- caliber gun . The projectiles , in the form of right cylinders , made plane surface to plane surface contact with the explosives . Pressures in the explosive were investigated with an expendable pressure transducer in some instances . The physical model of the projectile - explosive interaction describes , in principle , the duration of the peak shock pressure in terms of the projectile and explosive geometry and the steady- state penetration of the explosive . Of the explosives studied , liquid hydrogen- solid oxygen and liquid oxygen - solid or liquid hydrocarbon fuel were the most shock sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of about 1.0 kb or 987 atmospheres pressure ) ; cast TNT was the least sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of more than 110 kb pressure ) . Measurements of pressure in the explosive showed some moderate space resolution by the transducer and gave pressure distributions in agreement with expectations from the model of the shock processes . The appearance of the recovered projectiles and the calculated initiation shock pressures suggest that the solid explosives were initiated directly to high- order detonation , whereas the liquid explosives were probably initiated to low- order detonation-- with a subsequent , later transition to high- order detonation .

The use of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) regional meetings as a forum to educate teachers on the role of minerals in our society has been immeasurably successful. Each year, on average about 3,500 to 4,000 teachers participate in each of the three regional NSTA meetings. At each of these meetings, nearly 2,000 teachers visit the “Minerals Coalition Booth” and receive free mineral samples and other educational support materials. Some rules of thumb for a successful booth at the NSTA are provided. Considering the level of effort for such a booth, are there alternatives? The NSTA also organizes a national annual meeting with attendance of about 20,000. All who have participated in a regional NSTA agree that the traditional approach of providing a mineral set and teacher materials for a substantial fraction of the 20,000 attendees is not feasible. Conceptual alternatives for minerals education at the national NSTA meeting are introduced and evaluated.
