A presente proposta tem por objetivo desenvolver uma análise experimental da liga hipereutética Sn-0,5%Ni solidificada unidirecionalmente em regime transitório de fluxo de calor contra chapa molde de cobre. A liga foi avaliada quanto a sua microestrutura bruta de fusão e suas respectivas correlações com os parâmetros térmicos (velocidade da frente eutética -VE e taxa de resfriamento eutética -?E) e propriedades mecânicas. Os resultados mostram que a morfologia microestrutural predominante é composta por células ricas em estanho (β-Sn) circundadas por mistura eutética Sn+intermetálico tipo NiSn. Uma transição microestrutural foi observada entre as posições 15mm (?E=1,7°C/s) e 30mm (?E=1,1°C/s), de célula regular (CR)?célula tipo placa (CTP). Notou-se ainda a presença de intermetálicos primários NiSn distribuídos ao longo da matriz nas posições iniciais do lingote. Valores superiores de limite de resistência à tração (σu=26 MPa) e limite de escoamento (σy=21 MPa) foram encontrados para a posição 6mm a partir da base refrigerada do lingote, podendo estar relacionados com a estrutura celular mais refinada e também com a presença dos intermetálicos primários NiSn. O alongamento específico (?) comportou-se de maneira inversa, visto que as estruturas mais grosseiras (CTP) e a ausência de intermetálicos primários são responsáveis por facilitar a deformação plástica na estrutura da liga Sn-0,5%Ni, aumentando seu nível de ductilidade.

"The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

This report is the result of information obtained from a review of related literature, personal inquiry and on-site examination of active surface coal mining operations. Four improved surface coal mine systems are described in detail and evaluated for feasibility, implementation requirements, environmental benefit and costs. Engineering feasibility emphasizes equipment availability, compliance to design requirements, practicality and industry rating. Implementation potential emphasizes immediacy, ease, acceptability and constraints. Special attention was given to environmental responsiveness, both with regard to the solutions to mined-land reclamation problems and to the concurrency of reclamation. Each system description includes a hypothetical model mine with a depreciation schedule, capital summary, estimated annual production costs, sales price computation, production and operating cost summary, and a sensitivity analysis of mine price to stripping ratio. A program plan and time schedule for demonstrating a selected mining system covers site selection criteria, mine data collection, criteria for controlling and budgeting costs and reporting findings. Ten additional mining methods and techniques are briefly described and evaluated. Common reclamation problems are listed and described. Sixteen state reclamation laws and regulations are abstracted. Sixty-nine references are listed in the bibliography.

"Belt and shaker conveyors, used singly or as combined units, have for many years been an integral part of many coal-mine haulage systems. The belt conveyor has also been used extensively as a main haulage unit in open-pit iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district, particularly on the Mesabi Range. Few underground metal mines, however, either in the ferrous or non-ferrous branches of the mining industry, use the conveyors exclusively or even extensively for underground haulage. At present, only five iron-ore mines in the entire Lake Superior district have belt- or shaker-conveyor installations of any significant size. Of these mines, three are in the Crystal Falls-Iron River district of Michigan on the Menominee Range, one is on the Marquette Range near Ishpeming, Mich., and one is on the Mesabi Range near Keewatin, Minn.Results of the studies of tackless haulage in the Lake Superior district will not permit the establishment of any formula to prove or disprove the advantages of belt or shaker systems at all underground mines. The studies do show that trackless haulage can be used to advantage where the proper conditions exist. Advantages are particularly apparent when development can be planned sufficiently in advance of exploitation to permit installation of belts or shakers as part of the development program and where the systems are extended to include haulage in stopes as well as main entries.During the winter of 1947-48, the Bureau undertook a study of all of the underground ore conveying systems known to be in operation in the Lake Superior district for the purpose of making available to the entire mining industry the technologic data developed in the area. Because conditions that led to the installation of the belt and shaker conveying systems were often a function of the character of the deposit or the method of mining, a brief description of those conditions is included in this report.After a preliminary investigation into the extent to which trackless conveyors were employed in the district, it was found that a detailed study at five bites would result in fair appraisal of that method of haulage in the underground iron-ore mines.Each of the five significant installations is described separately in this report. In one instance, however, company policy does not permit identification of the mine wherein the conveying is done. In that instance the operation is designated as mine ""A"".Unless otherwise specified, all tonnage figures quoted herein are gross.The cooperation of officials of all of the companies operating underground mines in the Lake Superior district permitted successful completion of preliminary studies of mining practices and conveying systems.Special acknowledgment is made to R. "Considerable metal values are often locked in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, heap leach pads, slags, reverts, etc.) and process equipment (bins, holding tanks, thickeners, etc.). This is more than enough to justify accurate accounting of such in-process metal inventories from both financial accounting and operational perspective. However, accurately determining the metal inventory of an in-process unit is often a challenge in industrial practice. Audits have shown that available indirect or direct measurements often carry large inaccuracies. Sooner or later, ignoring these measurement errors lead to unexpected incoherencies in reported metal balances. In such situations, coherent metal balances are then achieved through subjective and sometimes significant adjustments of in-process inventory levels. While such metal accounting methods applied by mineral processing engineers used to be rarely challenged, they are now being increasingly scrutinised by various stakeholders. Hence, metal accounting procedures that mitigate subjectivity in adjustments while still coping with the unavoidable uncertainty are more relevant than ever.This paper reviews three different metal accounting methods for reporting in-process metal inventory values. Their individual application strongly depends on the available measurements i.e. The indirect method where the metal inventory of a given process unit is determined by subtracting the cumulative reclaim from the cumulative feed carries important flaws. The direct method also comes with challenging accuracy issues so that emptying a process unit is often the best available inventory measurement. This reality is recognised for by further analysing a previously proposed operating mode where two interchangeable process units are alternately used. The third investigated method is the redundant method which combines indirect and direct methods for a given process unit. This research report was produced in response to the release of the Mineral and Petroleum Royalty Bill. It involved are view of the mineral investment environments of selected countries in order to form an opinion on the appropriateness and competitiveness of the proposed royalty structure for South Africa. Many emerging countries have recently attracted a significant share of foreign investment, as a direct result of changes in policy. These are, by implication, the least risky and most favourable destinations for the ?investment dollar?. The five most competitive countries, namely Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico and Brazil have been identified as succeeding with their policy visions of creating favourable domestic investment environments. The investment rules of these countries served as a basis for the compilation of a Competitive Investment Framework (CIF). This is a template of best practice against which other investment environments, such as that of South Africa, can be measured. The framework indicates that mineral royalties should ideally be no more than three per cent, demonstrating that the regime proposed in the Royalty Bill is out of step with international best practice. Mineral royalties can never be viewed in isolation and in the assessment of the rates proposed in the Royalty Bill, one must consider the total taxation package. Such assessment appears in Section 5 of this report, demonstrating that there is reason for concern if National Treasury were to impose the rates stipulated in the Royalty Bill. The alternatives, conclusion and recommendations of the review appear in Sections 9 and 10. These are the result of independent analysis and assessment of the fundamental principles. It is done through the application of a Competitive Investment Framework that avoids the highly subjective and emotional views that often accompany a process like this.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of flake and high-crystalline natural graphite from 4 domestic and 25 foreign mines and deposits in 11 market economy countries (MEC's). Demonstrated resources were estimated to be 95 million metric tons (Mmt) containing 5.61 Mmt of recoverable flake and high-crystalline graphite products. Fifty-five percent (3.17 Mmt) of the total recovered product is estimated to comprise plus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake pro-ducts and "lump" and "chip" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite A" in this study; 45 pct (2.44 Mmt) of the total is minus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake products and "dust" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite B." Total production costs, including all costs needed over the life of each operation, were determined at a 0-and 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) for both graphite A and graphite B products. For a 15-pct DCFROR, 1.74 Mmt (54.9 pct) of the graphite A products is available at $600/mt or less and 2.13 Mmt (67.2 pct) is available for $800/mt or less. For the same DCFROR, 1.08 Mmt (44.3 pct) of the graphite B is available at $200/mt or less, and 1.71 Mmt (70 pct) is available at $325/mt or less. No domestic resources were determined to be economic at present prices. A sensitivity analysis of the relative economics of the Alabama graphite deposits under various operational parameters is presented in an appendix. All evaluations are in January 1984 dollars.

Increased application and interest in the use of microseismic monitoring to deal with ground control problems, Particularly those resulting in violent failures, has brought about the need for practical guidelines with respect to all phases of microseismic monitoring. This report presents the results of an 18-month effort to review the microseismic method and develop needed practical guidelines. Microseismic activity and properties of microseismic events are treated so that these parameters can be taken into account when developing monitoring equipment. Microseismic equipment is discussed to provide familiarization with the components of monitoring systems. Factors to be considered and procedures for developing a microseismic monitoring system are presented. Both physical and electrical considerations for the installation of a monitoring system are discussed in detail. The operation of a microseismic system including data analysis procedures is presented. Field examples to illustrate use of microseismic data in evaluating ground control problems are presented in a number of case histories.

DURING the happy and peaceful years between the Treaty of Versailles and the third New Deal, metallurgy became one of the most cosmopolitan of the sciences. Any metallurgist can name some twenty or thirty scientists whose work, in this country, in England, in Germany, or in France, Sweden, Italy, or Japan was as well known in other parts of the metal-producing and metal using world as it was locally, despite the fact that many of these men never left their native land. One of these metallurgical cosmopolites is Augustus Braun Kinzel, former Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., and now a Director of the Institute. Gus Kinzel, however, is not only a cosmopolite by reputation; he is also a cosmopolite in fact. For many years he commuted at least twice a year between New York and the rest of the world; he is, therefore, not only an expert on the art and science of metallurgy but is equally expert in world travel and can expound with authority on the comparative quality and especially on the cuisine of the great prewar steamship lines; and being a true cosmopolite, he knows, as well as he knows the iron-chromium diagram, the best vintage years in the Gironde, Cote d'Or, and Saone-et-Loire departments in France and along the banks of the Moselle and Rhine in Germany.

THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Lackawanna River drainage area is realized when it is known that in 1948 the 27 pumping plants in this region pumped over 48 billion gallons of water to the surface from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin of the Northern field. This is almost 92,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of over 300 feet for that year. By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area: the volume of water pumped from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin during 1948 was approximately 68 percent of that impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The Lackawanna. River and its tributaries drain a troughlike area of 345 square miles. The synclinal axis of this trough lies within the coal measures. All surface drainage into the valley must traverse some part of the coal measures. On the basis of 45.03 inches of rainfall recorded by the Scranton station of the United States Weather Bureau for 1948, the runoff from the Lackawanna River drainage area during that period was 135 billion gallons, approximately three times the volume of water pumped by all mine pumping plants in the Lackawanna. In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. The success of these circuits will be based on an ability to predict at both design stage and in everyday processing the variable ore properties, which is dependent upon reliable orebody knowledge that caries variability and underlying processing properties.CITATION:Powell, M S, 2013. "In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of construction aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1).Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of domestic nonfuel mineral production, including metals ($26.6 billion) and industrial minerals ($51.7 billion), in 2015 declined to a total of $78.3 billion, from $80.8 billion in 2014 (Table 1). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

Soda Springs background The Soda Springs phosphate mine and plant is a joint venture between Monsanto and its operating partner, Solutia Inc. The operation is based in southeastern Idaho in the Western Phosphate Field. The plant is located about 275 km (170 miles) northeast of Salt Lake City, UT and about 4 km (2.5 miles) north of the town of Soda Springs.

The presence of undetonated explosives in a rock face after firing constitutes a hazard which can result in a fatal or serious accident if undetected before drilling commences.Most accidents caused by drilling into explosives are the result of failure to examine the working face properly and lack of care in subsequent drilling operations; it is not always realized that explosive may be left in the butts of holes or may be driven into cracks or crevices in the rock.Obviously the best means of preventing accidents of this nature is to adopt methods of drilling, charging and firing which will reduce the hazard to a minimum.There are three ways in which undetonated explosives may be left in the rock face, namely:1. Misfires.2. Cut-off shots.3. Incomplete detonation or failure of the charge to propagate throughout.MisfiresNo attempt will be made in this paper to deal fully with the question of the prevention of misfires, as apart from the fact that most of the preventive methods are well known, it is believed that if the miner receives his explosives and means of initiation in good order, and proper care is taken in their use, the failure of a charge to fire will be a rare occurrence. The provision of central fuse capping stations on mines has gone a long way towards the elimination of misfires caused by the mishandling of safety fuse anddetonators.

This is the final article in a three-part series on microcomputers and application software in the mineral industry. The first article covered microcomputer terms and concepts. The second discussed exploration and mining software. This article will examine plant, administrative, and geotechnical software. Every effort has been made to be current in the latest software developments. Rapid change, however, is a fact of life in the computer world and any omission is inadvertent. Introduction Geotechnical disciplines have received considerable attention in software programming. Calculations are repetitive and the formulas needed to solve them are not extremely complicated. These programs are ideally suited to the microcomputer and the microcomputer is ideally suited to the consulting geologist or engineer, due to its low cost and reliability. In fact, the advent of the Apple (a registered trademark of Apple Computer Inc.) and, more recently, the IBM personal computer has caused an explosion of inexpensive software programs available to the microcomputing public. Another area that has benefited from computerization, although not in the same way, has been mineral beneficiation. Here, process control for start-up or phase-down operations has been used in newer plants for some time. Programs to perform various calculations are becoming more common as micros increase in number. Tappi Journal has a section with solutions to handheld-calculator and microcomputer problems. Process Modeling Most process modeling is still done only on mainframes. One such program is called ASPEN PLUS (a registered trademark of Aspen Technology), and a one-week course is recommended so the user can best use the program. This program is available through timesharing from University Computing Co. Programs to find an optimal solution using Linear Programming (LP) have been around for some time. Also, plant process simulation has been possible using simulation programs. Both simulation and LP are expensive to program and run. Although there are LP programs available for some micros, the user must be fairly knowledgeable about how to set up the problem. This is because each problem must be set up as a unique program that typically requires custom programming. There are some programs that can handle blending of mine crudes and examine economic parameters over the life of the mine. Plant Applications Areas relating to mine and plant applications with programs available for micros are maintenance, production reporting, inventory, accounting, and personnel scheduling. Maintenance Maintenance typically requires that certain jobs be performed in a particular sequence and parts be ordered with enough lead time for maintenance to take place on time. There is, therefore, a critical sequence of tasks that must be performed or the scheduled maintenance will not take place. The analysis of equipment trends in AUSIMM?s Revision of Monograph 19; Australasian Mining and Metallurgy Operating Practices (AMMOP) in the paper by Dight et al (in press) raised some interesting and in parts disturbing trends in the Open Cut Mining Industry. According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics the US mining and petroleum industries? productivity is down by 12% since 2004 while the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the productivity of the Australian mining industry is down by 34% since 2001. In terms of open cut equipment median output for draglines is down by 15% since 2003; electric rope shovels are down by 41% since 2003; hydraulic excavators are down by 39% since 2008; front end loaders are down by 39% since 2007 and trucks are down by 41% since 2006. Clearly the boom has not been good for the efficiency of the mines. During this same time, best practice (defined as the average of the top 10% by annual output per unit of input) has declined but not by as much as the median (eg. shovels down by 8%, excavators down by 19% and FEL?s down by 5%). This paper will build on the analysis of AMMOP to understand the differences occurring between median and best practice and identify the factors contributing to the decline in performance. As the industry enters a period of potentially lower prices for commodities and reduced margins pressure will be brought to bear on mine sites to start moving more with the equipment they have. An understanding of where efficiency has been lost will be a key component in that. The information contained in AMMOP, and the subsequent analysis of that information in papers such as this one will be crucial to reversing the decline in open cut equipment performance.

Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.'?,' "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. "It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines (GMSG) guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and consequently require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result, these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive, depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions.As a result of these factors, full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of processing facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices.To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result, it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. These methods can also be manipulated by an experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, allowing an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.
