Mining firms are widely criticised for their adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time many firms in the industry devote extensive resources, both financial and managerial, to the reduction or elimination such impacts. Very considerable improvements have been made, although these are sometimes overshadowed by a few high-profile accidents, such as the occasional collapse of a cyanide-containing tailings dam. In parallel, much effort is also directed at projecting a positive environmental image, as witnessed by extensive environmental reporting, both on paper and increasingly through web-platforms. Mining projects today almost invariably involve some form of environmental protection. In industrial countries regulations in this area are extremely stringent, as is enforcement. In less well developed countries, regulation and enforcement may be weaker, but firms are in many cases and for a number of reasons committing themselves to high levels of environmental protection, even if they might get away without doing so. Research in the area of environmental performance of mining firms has so far paid much attention to concepts such as sustainability indicators and the sustainability of individual firms. Given the still raging debates about the appropriate way to determine the degree to which any given firm is sustainable (Welford 1995) as well as the usefulness of what will in the final analysis be a value judgement, anyone on the sidelines of the debate will come back to the fundamental issue, how is knowledge that a particular firm has been judged ?sustainable? going to be made use of. This issue remains unresolved, which may explain the lack of progress in formulating a useful definition of a sustainable firm The question addressed in this paper is not so much about what firms are doing on the ground or in any particular case of environmental protection, but more in the subsequent use of these efforts - and by extension - on the overall direction of corporate environmental strategy. The fundamental problem facing all mining firms is that they cannot easily benefit from unilaterally reducing their environmental impact. The firm can of course avoid liability and keep a variety of stakeholders happy and hence experience lower costs of obtaining the [input] resources they need (in a broad sense, not just minerals), but this represents only part of the opportunities available form pursuing an environmental strategy (Reinhardt 2000). The other part, which may have an enormous potential, involves the concepts of competitor management and product differentiation. The logic of keeping stakeholders happy has been most forcefully argued by Pfeffer and Salanchick (1978) who link the behaviour of firms in all domains to their ability to obtain the resources they need, at a cost that is lower than it would otherwise be (Pfeffer & Salanccik 1978). Several varieties of strategy can be included under this heading, including cost reduction and risk management. The alternative logic is to convince customers that they want to pay more for minerals supplied by mining firm X or directly attributable to mine Y, or by making all mineral users pay more. These two strategies, which may be referred to as product differentiation and competitor management, respectively (Reinhardt 2000) are related to the demand side of mineral supply, whereas cost reduction and risk management are related to the supply side. Abstract An extensive drilling and laboratory testing program indicates that a construction aggregate resource is present within the Oligocene Sombrerito Formation limestone, southwestern Dominican Republic. The first part of the testing program included the collection, photographing and geologic logging of diamond drill cores to allow lithologic subdivision of the strata into potential quarry layers. The primary lithostratigraphic units are: I- (youngest) approximately 10 m of white, dense marine limestone II-approximately 5 m of white, interbedded dense and chalky marine limestone III-more than 2 m of tan, chalky, calcitic dolomite. Unit I is often altered by lateritic weathering and/or dolomitization. Unit II is often altered by dolomitization. The cores were individually crushed by quarry layer into coarse and fine aggregate sizes for chemical and physical analyses: specific gravity and absorption, MgSO4 soundness, sand equivalent, Atterberg limits of the minus #40 mesh fraction, and LA degradation. The unaltered portion of Unit I is suitable for all construction aggregate uses. Unit II is best suited for crushed stone base. Each of the non-weathered units decreases in coarse-aggregate yield and quality with depth and diagenetic dolomitization. Dolomitization typically causes about 5% lower yield of coarse aggregate, a sand equivalent of about 20 units below the original value an increase in absorption of about 3%, an increase in the LA of up to 13%, and a decrease in the average five-cycle MgSO4 soundness of about 17%.

The problem of balanced design in a belt conveyor has been under constant study. Increased use of this method of transport in recent years has stimulated investigations. Conveyor belt, power transmission and other machinery should be adequate to perform the required service. All components of the belt conveyor should work as an efficient unit moving its load continuously between terminals. As part of a long term research project on belt conveyors, Hewitt-Robins established in 1954 a 2-year grant at Pennsylvania State University. Under terms of the grant, certain fundamental phenomena were to be studied. This work evolved a new concept in belt conveyor power determination based on the principle of belt tension. The Penn State contract furnished the foundation for later more detailed studies. From these most recent investigations, more specific factors were defined. In the final analysis, all of the data collected has been worthwhile in belt conveyor design. Units now operate over long distances at speeds of over 800 fpm. Long high lifts are commonplace. Where vertical or inclined shafts were the rule, belt conveyors receive first consideration. Although belt conveyors have moved forward rapidly, the future will see a tremendous gain in their use. The ideal test belt conveyor would be several thousand feet in length and have a maximum tension of at least 70,000 lb., Also, this conveyor should be horizontai and have a variable feed rate of more than one material. Data from such a field belt conveyor combined with laboratory information would permit accurate analysis. Since this type of conveyor was not available, many field locations were visited: An alternate would have been to erect a closed circuit system in the laboratory. Either method had limitations and the first was selected as having the best possibilities. Manufacturers of conveyor belting and machinery basically have been using the same horsepower formula. As more information became available from field installations, factors in the basic formula were modified. Practically all conveyors are designed today by adding together the horsepowers required to move the empty belt, move the load horizontally, and elevate the load. The paper outlines the development of a solvent extraction process for the recovery of scandium, yttrium, thorium, and heavy lanthanides from waste sulphate liquor at the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant. A summary is given of known solvents for these elements, including the recently developed alkyl-phosphoric acid esters which are applicable to sulphate solutions.A kerosene solution of di- (2'-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) has been suggested by some workers as a suitable solvent for fractionation of the lanthanides. Experimental work with this solvent showed that it could be used for initial recovery of the above elements from low concentrations in the complex sulphate liquor. In particular, scandium could be recovered as a high grade product by extraction with 0·lM EHPA, followed by a purification strip with 9N sulphuric acid, and final stripping of scandium with sodium hydroxide solution.To enable alkaline stripping to be used successfully, the kerosene solution of the reagent was modified by the addition of a small proportion of nonanol. Experimental work included laboratory scale batch tests and small pilot scale continuous tests.A proposed extension of the process for the separate recovery of individual heavy lanthanides, yttrium, and thorium is described.INTRODUCTIONAt the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant of the South Australian Government, large volumes of "barren liquor", free from 'uranium, are at present run to waste. This "barren liquor" results from sulphuric acid leaching of Radium,Hill uranium concentrate, followed by separation of solid residues and removal of uranium from the clear solution by ion exchange. THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor's duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. Digital transformation (DT) is the process by which entities adapt themselves to modern technology. As digital technology becomes more prevalent (automation, cameras, sensors, touchscreens, artificial intelligence, etc.), there will be increased pressure on companies to leverage it for additional gains. For many companies in the mining industry, this will involve overcoming a steep learning curve. Furthermore, as the long-term success of the mining industry is dependent on a labor force with new skills (data management, analytics, digital literacy, etc.), new curriculum will need to be appended to the mining engineering discipline. This paper considers the mining industry’s need for DT. Then, it presents a three-part review of the foundational components of the DT process–ubiquitous data, connectivity, and decision making. Finally, it provides a discussion on the future of DT in mining as well as a research direction, which identifies the need of academia to provide support for mining companies in the form of both research and the education of digitally literate, dynamically capable mining engineers into the coming decades.

The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

Construction workers may be exposed to hazardous dust containing silica when working in enclosed cabs during construction activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that equipment operator exposure could be reduced by retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs, using sweeping compounds on soiled floors, and implementing a dust control program.

Ground Modification construction is rapidly evolving in the United States. An assessment of the construction status of Ground Modification methods with their dates of introduction and general acceptance in the United States is summarized. Seven of these techniques are discussed in depth with short case histories; namely, Dynamic Deep Compaction, vibro-compaction, vibro-Replacement, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, slurry grouting and jet grouting. Additional case histories are presented to illustrate the trend of combining Ground Modification techniques to solve specific site problems.

It is interesting to study the noise standards that have been promulgated in the US over the last decade or so. These regulations are likely to have long-lasting impact. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hearing Conservation Amendment (March 1983) continues to have influence not only in the workplace but in the debate over new regulations. Both the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulatory preamble documents state the desire to be consistent with OSHA. An examination of Table 1, which compares the major components of the three regulations and the 1998 NIOSH “best practices” criteria, depicts the extent to which that intent is met. There has been some regulatory activity in the last decade which may give some hope for evolution and updating based on the wealth of science that has occurred during the last quarter of a century since the OSHA regulation was enacted. However there has also been some “back-sliding” toward more lenient standards. The MSHA noise standard made regulatory progress in September 2000 by emphasizing engineering and administrative controls, followed by personal protective equipment, in the hierarchy of noise intervention. MSHA’s requirement for technician certification (today only available from CAOHC) strengthened the training requirements for audiometric testing in hearing conservation programs and MSHA also added the requirement of dual hearing protection at 105 dB TWA. There were many subtle differences between OSHA and MSHA based on comments and a desire to clarify some of the vague aspects of the OSHA noise standard, and meet the needs of the regulated mining industry. One example pertains to the ceiling for exposures. OSHA says, “no exposures >115 dBA,” which is interpreted to mean no unprotected exposures above that level, giving credit for the assumed effectiveness of hearing conservation programs, hearing protection devices and administrative and engineering controls. MSHA specified that a “P” code1 violation be issued for any protected or unprotected exposures >115 dBA. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) noise standard for railroad operating employees, which went The Modern Evolution of Hearing Conservation Regulationsinto effect February 26, 2007, was expressly based on the OSHA standard but also uses MSHA for comparison. The preamble states that the FRA defers to OSHA as the “primary regulator of noise in the workplace,” but also acknowledges the need for some departure from the OSHA regulation (FRA Preamble II.B). As an example, FRA requires testing at 8000 Hz “because it will allow employers to identify hearing loss sooner.” The FRA rejected MSHA’s hierarchy of noise controls in favor of requiring specific engineering interventions and focusing on appropriate hearing protection which would still allow communication and audibility, and identification of excessive noise through employee-filed “excessive noise reports.”2 Where OSHA has no specific mandate requiring employees to take advantage of the employer-paid audiogram, it has been traditionally a condition of employment and is generally accepted that OSHA-covered workers require an annual audiogram. MSHA addressed this issue in its preamble; however, they made no significant change. MSHA employers are required to offer annual audiograms but MSHA stopped short of requiring employees to comply with annual audiometric testing. The MSHA preamble does allow that mine operators can also make audiometric monitoring a condition of employment. FRA requires employees to

The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) is a new system of tools providing an original approach in drill-stem testing. It improves control during the testing operation and gives a more accurate evaluation of the fluid recovered while providing additional pressure information for reservoir analysis. The tools are operated entirely by up and down motion of the drill stem. This up and down operation provides a positive means of control and offers easily observed surface indications of tool operating position. An unlimited number of shut-in and flow periods may be taken with this tool while in the hole. The key to the success of the MFE system of tools is the safety seal packer. Until this development, operation of the tools by up and down motion only had proven unreliable. The success ratio of the MFE now exceeds the ratio achieved by conventional tools. The equipment includes a 2,750-cc chamber in which a representative sample of the flowing formation fluid is trapped at the end of the last flow period and brought to the surface under pressure. The sample can be evaluated at the wellsite or transferred under pressure for laboratory analysis. The sampling feature of the tool allows a sample to be obtained from a reservoir which has suffered minimum influence from production. A representative sample can be obtained for laboratory or empirical analysis by employing a testing technique to minimize drawdown during flow periods. Interpretation methods to take advantage of this additional information are presented and supported by actual field examples. INTRODUCTlON The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) represents the most recent technical advance in formation testing. Drill-stem testing techniques prior to the MFE have been limited in three areas—(1) operaiion, (2) recovery analysis, and (3) reservoir analysis. The tools in the MFE system allow maximum control during testing and provide test information superior to that obtainable with conventional tools. THE following short paper on the Blair Athol coal-field will no doubt have a twofold interest to members from the fact that its main seam, known as the "Big Seam" of a maximum thickness of 91 ft without a band, is unique, being probably the thickestseam of high-grade clean coal yet known, and also because of the interesting problem it presents the colliery engineer-viz., which system of mining is the best to secure the highest economical extraction.Location - Blair Athol is a mining township in Central Queensland, situated at an altitude of about 1100 ft. above sea-level at the end of a branch railway line 74, miles from Emerald, on the Main Central Western line, and 240 miles by rail from Rockhampton.Geology - The coal-measures appear to lie in a shallow basin of about four or five square miles in area, surrounded on all sides by slates and schists, which are overlaid oh three sides by alluvial deposits of up to 150 ft. in thickness, and on the fourth by a thick basalt bed, as yet unproved, some miles beyond which the auriferous slates outcrop. These alluvial deposits have been largely worked in years past and gave high gold returns, the chief diggings being Clermont and Macdonald's Flats in the south, the Springs and Black Ridge in the north-east, and Yankee Creek and others on the west. The surface of the coal-fields may be described as unbroken, but undulating, with gentle southerly dip, the watercourses opening out into wide flats. Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

This paper describes support of excavation (SOE) design and construction for three large diameter shafts excavated through glacial soil and controlled blasting in complex sedimentary rock formations. SOE in soil consists of unreinforced secant pile rings designed to resist lateral pressure in circumferential compression, eliminating costly steel core beam reinforcing. Controlled blasting at the shafts, adits, and tunnels in densely populated neighborhoods requires managing risks to the public, buildings, and utilities. Controlled blasting approaches limited adverse impacts to receptors nearby while achieving adequate production and fragmentation. A site-specific observational approach was used to adjust blasting parameters, limiting the impact on local stakeholders while maintaining daily progress and managing overbreak.
