While flash smelting and converting are capturing a greater share of the market, injection through circular injectors will remain with us for the foreseeable future. The use of top lances for injection is a key feature in several processes (e.g. Mitsubishi, Ausmelt). Tuyeres, on the other hand, are incorporated into a number of processes (e.g. Noranda, Peirce-Smith). To date no lances or tuyeres are cooled by an external source. The reagent provides the bulk of the cooling. With limited cooling, it is normal to have substantial wear on the nozzles - especially in the case of lances. To overcome the issue of wear, a new patented injector (lance or tuyere) has been developed by Noranda and McGill University. This novel unit is based on heat pipe technology. It can operate for an extended period of time without wearing. Enhanced lance/tuyere life is achieved by operating the injector at a low enough temperature that promotes the formation of a thin frozen layer on the outer body of the unit. The vaporizing and condensing substance within the unit acts to cool' the high heat flux portions and dissipate the heat to areas of low heat flux outside the vessel. A fairly large number of tests have been conducted with a prototype unit. The tests have shown that the heat pipe lance is a viable unit. In this paper is detailed a test which illustrates how the lance functions when pure oxygen is injected into copper matte. In addition, the findings from a basic study of a heat pipe in high heat flux environments are also presented.

A new steelmaking process, in which manganese ore was intentionally reduced, was developed to achieve a higher manganese Yield using a combined blowing converter. In this study, manganese behavior was discussed through the introduction of a model. Apparent reduction rates of manganese were calculated by the two terms that were determined experimentally, with SOkg and 2S0ton combined blowing converters. The model calculated manganese changes during the operation. We applied the model to the actual operation and found that manganese behavior was predicted fairly well by this model.

BHP Hartley Platinum operates an electric smelting furnace to treat Cu-Ni-PGM concentrate at its plant in Selous, Zimbabwe. The furnace, originally built by others, has experienced problems including severe refractory erosion of the sidewall. Hatch Associates has designed several important improvements to the furnace, including: ? water-cooled copper cooling elements in the slag zone ?air-cooled copper cooling fins at the metal level ?water-cooled copper tapholes ?binding system providing vertical refractory compression ?electrode seals ?new feed pipes Novel construction techniques employed on this project to reduce shutdown duration are discussed.

"This paper gives the overview of different alternatives to recycle the following wastes: slag, dusts, wastes of electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) and auto shredder residues (ASR). Based on modified Bogue calculations, steelmaking slags were combined in order to produce a belite-rich clinker activated with sulphoaluminate. The EAF dusts containing significant amount of metals can be recycled in different ways: The carbothermal treatment and INTECT process are reported. The results obtained from the model of Auto Shredder Residue injection into blast furnace show that ASR can be used as reducing agent in the BF process if certain conditions are met. The particle size of this material must be controlled to ensure optimal gasification of the material in raceway. The non-ferrous contents may affect the pig iron quality, which is difficult to rectify at a later point. It seems the pyrolysis is the most attractive process to handle ASR. The BRGM flow sheet of WEEE treatment is also reported.I. Introduction The activities of human been may generate wastes and by their accumulation during several years, these wastes may have an impact on the environment and on the human health. These wastes can be generated in the forms of solid, liquid and gas. A variety of industrial wastes can be recycled for use as products. There are three ways in which industrial waste recycling occurs: at the facility itself (on-site recycling), at commercial facilities that gather waste streams from several companies (off-site recycling), and at a company that uses as inputs in its production process the waste products of another company. The industries producing iron and steel may generate different solid wastes which are classified in three main categories: 1. Ferrous material (mainly dusts and sludges from gas cleaning), 2. Slags (these by-products are generated from different process stages), 3. Others by-products (including refractories and material generated from engineering activities). According to this review, the most quantity of the metallurgical wastes is deposed. Currently, the public opinion opposes the creation of new sites. This leads to the growth of the waste disposal costs. Such situation reduces the enterprise competitiveness and decreases their market share on regional and/or national and/or world scales. The National Commission of Atomic Energy is investigating a suitable physicochemical process for the conditioning of spent nuclear fuel and treatment of the scrap of research reactors of the Al-UxSiy type. A possible way of processing is through dry chlorination of the cladding with the purpose of selective separation of the aluminium from the remaining elements such as Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu, etc. transforming them into volatile chlorides. Some important advantages of this method are the thermal stability of the chlorides that allow the easy separation of the halides by physical methods and the low volume of radioactive waste generated. The interactions in the following systems were studied in the range of temperature between 150º-500°C: Al-Fe, Al-Ni, Al-Cu, Al-Zn, Cu-Zn and the pure metals. We found that the reactivity was different depending on if the elements were alloyed or separated. The separation factors of the systems under study were determined. Nickel is perfectly separated from aluminium for all temperatures, whereas good conditions for copper separation were achieved below 400ºC. In the case of iron, complete isolation was never attained. However, by decreasing temperature to 150ºC it is possible to obtain aluminium chloride with less iron content. The separation of zinc from the product was also difficult. It was detected that zinc chloride volatilization decreases when other chlorides were present, for example cooper chlorides. In the Cu-Zn alloy, zinc chlorides remained in the condensed product due to interactions with copper. The samples were characterized by scanning- electron microscopy (SEM), X ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption.

The demand for nickel is growing and will continue to do so for the foreseeable, future. This will make the construction of new leaching and smelting plants necessary. This paper described a number of possible alternative processes. The first projects with new technology are currently undergoing trials and feasibility studies. Experience from other industrial sectors and from existing plants is being incorporated into these investigations. Several features of smelting and refining operations make them appropriate technology to adapt to the processing of "wastes" not only from the minerals Industry itself, but for wastes in general. These features include significantly higher temperatures than are achieved in conventional Incinerators and also good thermal stability derived from the mass of molten metal and slag in the furnace. This paper expands on Information contributed to the Mervyn Willis Symposium in July 1992 and includes knowledge generated in the last two years of waste processing R&D in a sealed 100kg capacity DC arc furnace specially constructed for the "Environment" process being developed in Wollongong. As one product of-the process is a foundry-type iron, the feed always contained ferruginous dusts or heavily contaminated scrap. For the dusts, sewage sludge has been used as a binder and also as a proportion of the fuel-reductant. To achieve the necessary bath carburisation, It is beneficial to add other lower reactivity carbons such as "kish' graphite, carbon from electrode butts, dusts from coke ovens, carbon from aluminium pot line residues, dry cell batteries etc. Metallurgical factors involved In process control, Including metal and slag, compositions, are discussed.

The Plant, which was started up in April 1970, was originally designed for a capacity of 40.000 ton of cathodes per annum, using 12 sections, containing 408 cells. Since then the addition of another 8 sections containing 280 cells and using the Reverse Current System has made possible the increased output of 109.000 ton. The quality of the cathodes produced is excellent. The extension of the Electrolytic Refinery, by the introduction of the Reverse Current System, has been a great success and no problem has arisen in the new equipment or in the modifications carried out in the plant. The operation of the plant has improved due to better control procedures.

A new process for the leaching of chalcopyrite concentrates has been developed and tested in miniplant campaigns and locked cycle testwork carried out between 1996 and 1999. The process involves pressure leaching in a sulphuric acid solution, e.g. raffinate from copper solvent extraction. Iron in the feeds is precipitated predominantly as hematite in the autoclave, simultaneously with copper extraction. Gold and silver in the pressure leach residue are recoverable by conventional cyanidation, following flotation to remove elemental sulphur by-product. The results of recent miniplant tests and batch locked cycle tests are provided.

"PET bottles are separated and subsequently crushed into flakes. Except for PET, these flakes contain PE, PVC, paper, adhesives, beverages remainders and mineral impurities. PET itself usually is a glycol and terephthalic and isophthalic acid polymer.The suggested method consists in PET flakes crystallization at 255°C. In the meantime, volatile substances evaporate and PVC disintegrates. Formed crystalline PET is crushed into small particles and then is subject to the basic hydrolysis at an atmospheric pressure. In addition to lye solution, glycol is added in the hydrolysis. Water is eliminated by boiling, which gives rise to suspension of sodium salt of terephthalic acid and glycol. The suspension is skimmed and the filtered glycol is vacuum distilled. Pure glycol is then the distillation product.Crystals are dissolved in water and the solution is filtered, which eliminates PE and impurities. Electrodialysis removes pure terephthalic acid salt from the solution. Glycol solution is returned to the hydrolysis. Terephthalic acid is precipitated by a mineral acid. Subsequently, it is washed and dried. The filtrate is separated through electrodialysis to lye and acid. The lye gets back to the hydrolysis and the acid is used for precipitation. Terephthalic acid and glycol are products in a “polymer grade” quality. The waste is a part of washing waters, distillation residues after glycol regeneration and a filter cake after the terephthalate solution filtration."

The refractory bricks of a rotary cement furnace containing of alumina and magnesium chromite were studied in order to determine whether they could be used in the concrete production as aggregates. Three mortars were prepared by mixing 1 part cement, 3 part aggregate materials, 0.5 part water by weight and mechanical, chemical, thermomechanical and microstructural characteristics were evaluated. The compressive and bending strength of samples were determined after 2 and 28 days curing. Resistance to chemicals were established by calculating the weight gain of mortars stored in 2 % HCl solution for 1 h and 24 h. Thermomechanical characteristics were determined by measuring the compressive strength of heat treated specimens at temperatures of 400 °C, 600 °C and 800 °C. Consequently, magnesium chromite containing waste brick aggregates have given the best results.

The performance of AB5-type alloys for hydrogen absorption including the electrochemical absorption as an electrode for rechargeable batteries has been demonstrated' to be a complex function of the composition, microstructure and surface condition. The compositional studies have focused primarily on substitutions for Ni on the B-site (e.g. Co, Al, Mn, etc.). This current study examines the effect of rare earth substitutions for La on the A-site and considers both other "light" rare earths (Ce, Nd, Pr) and "heavy" rare earths (Dy, Sm, etc.).

Layered LiMn0.5Ni0.3Co0.2O2 was prepared from Mn(NO3)2, Ni(NO3)2, Co(NO3)2 and LiOH by co-precipitation and solid state reaction. XRD, C-V and galvanostatic charge-discharge methods were used to examine the structural and electrochemical characteristics. The LiMn0.5Ni0.3Co0.2O2 delivered a high discharge capacity of 167 mAh/g between 2.5 and 4.3 V with excellent cycling stability.

BN (Boron Nitride) based composites were prepared with hot-pressing by using h-BN as main material in ceramic preparation process. The relative density, bending strength, vickers’ hardness, thermal shock resistance, thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, phase composition and microstructure were tested and analyzed by using modern testing technology. The results indicate that the best formula is B, the relative density is 97%, the bending strength is 260 MPa, the hardness is HV5 343kg/mm2, the thermal expansion coefficient is 2.8×10-6℃-1, the thermal conductivity is 22 W/(m.K) and have no crack after thermal shock for 20 times by water cool. XRD analysis indicates that the main phase compositions are h-BN, β-Si3N4 and sialon. SEM studies show that the grains wrapped up by solid solution.

"Rejected sands from smelting metallurgical process because contain lead and others heavy metals are a problem to dispose as waste in all the countries. A procedure that is being proposed for it is to incorporate it on common clay bodies in the fabrication of structural ceramic products as bricks, blocks and roof tiles. The main goal of this paper is to present the results obtained with mixtures of sands from smelting metallurgical process with common clay from Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil. Preliminary incorporation tests (1,0% in weight) were made with hand formed spherical samples. With the higher compression strength of the spheres after drying and firing (950ºC) experiments on bricks production were made for quality technological test. Seven hundred hallow blocks containing 1,0% waste were produced and presented ceramic properties similar to those without sand incorporation. Introduction In last the fifteen years the LMPSol - Raw Materials & Non-metallic Solids Laboratory – Metallurgic Eng. & Materials Depto. – Polytechnic School - University of São Paulo comes studying the possibilities of incorporate industrials waste materials to the production of bricks and other products of construction aiming at to remove pollution products of the environments and to user the properties of the same ones in the structural ceramics products. Examples are the study of the influence of rejected steel furnace dusts in structural ceramic [1], another example is the main subject of the present paper: use of rejected sand from smelting metallurgical process in the production of bricks an other products of structural ceramics. Titanium is a high-strength, low-density metal nearly immune to corrosion, but limited in use by its high price. The high price is due to the cost of smelting and processing the ore. The research on titanium production using the Solid Oxide Membrane (SOM) process aims to consolidate most of the processing steps required for conventional titanium production into a single step making it an energy-efficient and cost-effective method for producing CP billet and ingot and possibly also powders used to make titanium alloys. In the SOM process experiment, a steel crucible contains MgF2-CaF2-TiO2 flux; an inert metal/carbon rod serves as the cathode; an oxygen-ion-conducting yttrium-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) membrane in the form of a one-end-closed tube contains either a liquid metal that acts as the anode or liquid MgF2-CaF2 ionic flux that connects the YSZ membrane to an anode. During electrolysis, when the voltage between anode and cathode is higher than the reduction potential of titanium oxide, titanium ions are reduced at the cathode and the oxygen ions pass through the YSZ membrane and are oxidized at the anode. The oxygen ions are oxidized at the anode by a reducing agent, hydrogen gas or carbon, forming steam or CO(g), respectively. To date, a suitable MgF2-CaF2-TiO2 flux has been selected and the operating temperature for the SOM process has been determined. Several electrolysis experiments have been performed. As expected, lower valence deposits of titanium oxides have been witnessed at the cathode prior to depositing pure titanium. Continuing work will aim to extend the electrolysis time in order to pass enough charge to produce a significant amount (100 g) of titanium at the cathode.

Both pressure leaching of zinc concentrate, in an autoclave, and atmospheric leaching, in stirred tanks, have been employed in the expansion of zinc production at plants employing roast-leach-electrowin technology. These direct leaching methods result in the conversion of the sulphur in the feed to the elemental form, rather than to sulphur dioxide, decoupling zinc production from acid production. Atmospheric and pressure leaching methods are also readily implemented over a wide range of production rates. In choosing the best technology for expansion, capital and operating costs, zinc recovery, byproduct quality and the compatibility of recycle streams with the existing refinery must be compared. Leach testwork with several zinc concentrates using both methods has been performed by Dynatec. Recent results are presented, along with a discussion of their implications for process selection.

"The structural and electronic properties of cubic d -NbN are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and all-electron full potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FPLAPW). The equilibrium structural parameters are determined by fitting the total energy as a function of volume to the Murnaghan's equation of state. We calculated the total and partial densities of states (DOS) and compared them with those computed by different authors. Our DOS at Fermi level is found to be very close to the experimental value. The band structure is computed, discussed and used to find the characteristic energy separations. Valence electron density contours are recorded and discussed. We deduced the partial charge densities of different bands and binding energies of valence core levels and compared them with experimental and theoretical results obtained by different authors.IntroductionNiobium nitride has been intensively investigated over the last decades because of its interesting physical properties and technological applications (superconducting microdevices, microelectronic, catalytic probes, and hard coatings) [l]. While the group IV transition metal nitrides (TMN) mainly crystallize in the cubic NaCl structure (Bl type), those of group V and VI nitrides occur as different phases. Thus for niobium nitride, many phases have been reported in the literature: cubic fcc d -NbN, tetragonal ? -Nb4N3, hexagonal d -NbN, hexagonal e -NbN, and low nitrogen content hexagonal ß -Nb2N [l, 2].Structural and electronic properties of niobium nitride were investigated theoretically and experimentally by many authors. For example, in 1975 Schwarz [3] obtained the partial density of states for NbC and NbN from APW band structure calculations. In 1975 Kallne and Pessa [4] studied the electronic structure of Nb, NbC and NbN by using X-ray emission. In 2003 Amriou et al. [5] studied the electronic structure and bonding mechanism of NbC and NbN compounds using first principle total energy calculations using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. Also in 2006 Sanjines et. al [l] studied the electronic structure of the hexagonal~Nb2N, hexagonal' d -NbN, and cubic d -NbN thin fihns by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. They [l] also calculated the densities of states for these phases and used them in the interpretation of the experimental valance band spectra. Most of these studies are old and there is a need for more recent studies. According to our knowledge, there are little comprehensive theoretical studies on this subject by using FP-LAPW method [5], which proved its ability to give accurate results. In this work we used the FP-LAPW method to study the structural and electronic properties of the cubic (fee) o-NbN (space group Fm-3m, prototype NaCl) crystal."

"The Rain and SMZ mines from 1987 to 1994 produced a total of22.0 t of gold from a pre-mine reserve of 14.24 Mt of ore grading 2.13 g/t Au.Gold at Rain is hosted within the basal portion of the Mississippian Webb Formation. ·Mineralization is closely tied to the Rain Fault which is interpreted to be the main feeder for the deposit. Multiple collapse and hydrothermal breccia events provided permeability for the mineralizing fluids in the otherwise unreactive siltstones. Major alteration events include: decalcification and dolomitization of the Devils Gate Limestone; and silicification, baritization, argillization and oxidation of the Webb Fm. Six ore types based on XRD and visual rock chip Jogging have been identified: siliceous ore containing >40% quartz and <30% barite; siliceous-baritic ore containing mostly silica but >30% barite; baritic ore containing >40% barite; argillaceous ore containing >40% total clays (including alunite); calcareous ore containing mostly calcite and dolomite; and carbonaceous ore which has significant pyrite and organic carbon. Metallurgical testing of the oxide leach grade ores found that recoveries, on -1.3 cm crushed material, were greater than 70%. Results also found that Rain ore has strong grind dependency due to silica encapsulation.The Rain leach pad was commissioned in 1988, and to date 9.3·Mt at an average grade of0.65 g/t Au have been placed. Life to date recovery, through December 1995, is approximately 51 %, for a total of3.87 t of gold produced. Two major factors have contributed to the low leach recoveries at Rain when compared with the metallurgical testing: 1) More argillaceous ore than expected was placed on the pad especially late in the mine life and 2) approximately 50% of the tons placed were run-of-mine with no agglomeration."

It is stated that the specific character of SPHTS specimens of TiCx consists in crystal lattice strength reflecting the condition of synthesis in ?burning wave?. The use of roentgenographic and other methods of analysis allow to estimate the effect of the conditions of synthesis causing the carbon sablattice defect on the grinding intensity of TiCx -phases. The study of the kinetics of vibratory grinding of TiCx -phases in ethanol and benzene medium allows to establish high grinding intensity of the phases close to stoichiometry and the possibility of producing high dispersion powders (Ssp 4.5-6 m2/g).
