Silicon carbide (SiC) can be produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperature, The product is a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 micron in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean high grade Sic whiskers product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90 percent. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

This paper will concern the processing of kaolin clays from the sedimentary deposits of Georgia and South Carolina, While the major processing steps will be touched on briefly, emphasis will be given to the dewatering of the clay-water slurries (slips) formed in the processing of kaolin clays The dewatering steps discussed will include gravity settling, centrifugal dewatering, vacuum filtration, and thermal dryings Of these dewatering steps particular attention will be given to vacuum filtration and the variables affecting filtration of these kaolin clays.

The purpose of this paper is to guide you in the selection of sampling equipment and outline design parameters for the cutters used in dry and wet sampling without adding redundant mathematical probability formulas to your files. Special attention will also be given to the equipment used in conjunction with samplers and sampling systems, such as feeders, crushers, chutes, launders, and controls.

Room-and-pillar mining at White Pine started in 1953 from a sub-outcropping orebody that gently dips to 1000 m depths in a distance of about 6 km. High horizontal stresses were recognized in the mid-1960s which had obvious stability impacts when viewed in combination with the increased overburden stresses. Modifications in conventional room-and-pillar design were introduced through the years on a trial-and-error basis to help overcome stability and resource recovery problems. These modifications were based on pressure arch concepts using pillar yielding and/or pillar recovery, and on mine layout orientation to minimize stress impacts. While some of these modifications were successfully applied in some areas, they failed in others. Through the years, visual observations played a major role in panel design with contributions from stress measurements and analyses. However, the down slide in the copper economy during the 1970s and early 1980s resulted in a loss of interest in the application of these concepts. This paper reviews ground control problems and presents the results of recent stress measurements and computer analyses. They shed light on the importance of using yield pillars and mine layout orientation to control stresses at depth.

I am not a member of AIME, and this is my first annual meeting. As a lifelong member of the non-ferrous metals industry I have enjoyed listening today to speakers point with pride and view with alarm the public relations activity or lack thereof in the halls of government, as well as at the grass roots. There is much to be alarmed about, to be sure, but also some accomplish¬ments to be viewed with pride. Other speakers have given a broad overview of our industry's relations with their several publics. I will be specific about two incidents in which The Anaconda Company faced the loss of confidence of a large portion of its publics: the nationalization of our properties in Chile in 1971 and the closing of our under¬ground mines in Butte, which was announced last October. If I have a minute left over, I will speak about our concern for the loss of confidence in business institutions which has been re¬vealed in recent public opinion polls.

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Hard-rock phosphate was formerly the chief source of all phosphate in Florida. Its mining began as early as 1883 or 1884, reached a peak level in 1907 and ceased in 1966. Production began and ended in the Dunnellon area (Marion County). Nearly all the hard-rock was exported because its P205 value per unit weight is generally more concentrated than that of other phosphate rock. Maximum production, achieved in 1907, was greater than 600,000 tons; the total value for that year was more than $4,000,000. The Florida hard-rock phosphate, considered to be of middle Miocene to early Pliocene age, has an intermittent narrow, linear northwest-southeast trend. The Ocala uplift controls the phosphate distribution for more than 200 miles. Other known, isolated hard-rock areas appear to be related to minor folds on the Ocala uplift. The hard-rock phosphate deposits are a heterogeneous mass of sedimentary fluorapatite, chert and quartz with textures ranging in size from clay to boulder, and in thickness from 0 to 40 feet. Phosphate compounds, principally fertilizers, have been in oversupply since before 1968, but by the middle 1970's some experts forecast a supply-demand balance. A brighter future for exploitation of Florida hard-rock phosphate depends upon one or more of these factors: 1) depletion of present premium grades (74 percent BPL and above) of land-pebble; 2) cheaper electric power from nuclear generators for profitable electric furnace operation; 3) supply and price of sulfur; 4) manageable rail-water transportation costs; 5) development of less costly mining and separation methods; and 6) minimum competition from high-grade foreign phosphate.

Chevron Resources Company owns and operates an open pit phosphate mine and mill 11 miles north of Vernal, Utah. The plant currently produces 500,000 tons per year of concentrate and has the capacity to produce 750,000 tons per year. The operation is currently being expanded to 1,300,000 tons per year of concen¬trate in order to supply a new fertilizer plant being constructed by Chevron Chemical Company in Rock Springs, Wyoming. A 10-inch, 96-mile pipeline is being built to transport the concentrate from Vernal to Rock Springs. The present and expanded operation will be discussed. HISTORY In 1915, Harry Ratliffe staked nearly 15,000 acres of low to medium grade phosphate rock along the southern flank of the Uintah Mountains. This deposit became the largest privately owned phosphate deposit containing approximately 700 million tons of reserves. Initial development of the deposit began in 1958 by San Francisco Chemical, a joint venture between Stauffer Chemical Company and Mountain Copper Limited. In 1968, Stauffer Chemical Company bought out Mountain Copper Limited and became sole owner and operator. In 1981, Chevron Resources Company bought the property from Stauffer and has operated the mining and milling operations since.

The steam coal quality is less stringent than metallurgical coal quality. The steam coal is prepared either by cleaning full size range of raw coal or cleaning coarse coal only, leaving the fine coal raw. The latter scheme is more cost competitive. It is particularly applicable to U.S. eastern soft coal where low ash coal is concentrated in fine sizes. For raw coal size separation, a recently developed Rotating Probability Screen, developed by the British Coal Board, may be advantageously used for easy change of raw coal separating size and to avoid screen deck plugging when handling wet and clayey raw coals.

The classification of selective mining units (SMU) and the assignment of grades to those classified SMU are very important in open pit mining, especially for precious metal mining. When the classification is done, the true values of the SMU grades are unknown. These unknown SMU grades are mostly estimated analyzing the geologic data and blast hole assays. To classify the SMU's based on the estimate of SMU grade, without considering uncertainty associated with unknown SMU grade, yields incorrect decision in sending material to appropriate destination. In this paper, a method is developed to classify SMU's considering the uncertainty associated with unknown SMU grades. By using this method, traditional estimate of SMU grade is replaced with conditional probability distribution of SMU grade. The decisions about the destination of a given SMU are performed by minimizing the loss due to misclassification. Also, the asymmetric loss function by penalizing the overestimation and the underestimation unequally is used in assigning grades to classified SMU's. A case study is carried out to apply the traditional ore control techniques and proposed method in classification of SMU's and the assignment of the grades in a hypothetical gold mine.

The requirements for controlling air and stream pollution are a most timely subject for all concerned people. The coal industry has taken great measures to reduce both types of pollution. Through the use of more efficient scrubbing equipment on their thermal dryers, pollution has been considerably reduced. In many cases, the complete elimination of thermal drying by using centrifugal dryers to dewater fine coal products and meet customer specifications has completely eliminated air pollution from this source. To help eliminate stream pollution and the hazards created by tailing ponds, the coal industry is using centrifugal dewatering equipment. Use of centrifugals to dewater fine refuse for disposal would eliminate refuse ponds or extend their life. In doing this effectively and economically, preparation plants have the option of recycling the clarified water to close the water circuit or of discharging the water into receiving streams with the assurance that it contains an acceptable amount of refuse solids.

The region of Asturias, located in the northwest of Spain, has an extensive mining history; coal, gold, zinc, lead, copper, cobalt, mercury, iron, manganese, fluorspar and others have been extracted from the antiquity. In the Asturian Central Coal Basin, the closure of all open pit coal mines and their restoration, the progressive closure of underground coal mines that is happening from the 1980?s, and the restoration of spoil heaps, provides post mining lands for alternative uses. In relation to metallic mining, the abandonment of all mercury mines without restoration in the 1970´s, has left significant quantities of wastes and mining works. More than thirty years later most of them remain without restoration. In these sites the legacy of the historical mining activities is apparent in the form of shafts, galleries and transversals, old mining installations and spoil heaps. Mine wastes have eventually become important Hg and As pollution sources, resulting in a widespread contamination of the surrounding soils and surface waters. Abandoned mines of other metals such as copper, cobalt, iron, etc. and industrial minerals such as fluorspar, have also left a mining legacy to take into consideration. In this context of declining mining areas, some remedial options have been applied to specific areas resulting in alternative uses as pastures, agro-forestry, industry and socio-cultural activities.

"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

Virtual reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced form of computer graphics. The images are generated based on where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR can provide a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. New technology continues to be introduced into the mining industry to meet the productivity needs of coal and noncoal producers. There is also an increased need for more innovative training of mine workers. New technology and equipment designs often affect the basic causes of accidents. For example, the development of cabs and canopies for underground coal-mine equipment has reduced the number of accidents related to roof falls and rib rolls. However, safety-training specialists then had to focus on the machines themselves, because the modifications had the potential for causing "pinch-point" accidents. In fact, although the overall physical demands on mine workers have diminished, there has been an escalation in the concerns about trauma from repetitive physical activity. Thus, health-and-safety training specialists have shifted their atten¬tion to the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards (Hancock and Hill, 1995). Recognizing that the spatial relationships of a workplace convey more information about hazards when experienced rather than described, trainers agree that simulation is the method of choice. Unfortunately, until recently, simulation systems were either simple software programs that did not come close to portraying the real experience or were complex hardware systems (such as flight simulators) that did, but at a cost of millions of dollars (Fritz, 1991). However, researchers and training specialists are excited about an emerging approach to work-force education based on virtual reality. VR is also described as cyberspace, immersive simulation, artificial reality, telepresence, virtual environment or virtual world (Meyer and Dunn-Roberts, 1992; Peterson, 1992). It represents a group of concurrent advances in computer and interface technologies. They enable an individual to interact in a multisensory way with a computer-generated environment. To achieve this, a typical VR system incorporates a computer that contains the necessary databases for producing realistic images and audio; a head-mounted display (HMD) or screen for viewing the images; and a three-dimensional controller, joystick or data glove for interacting with the computer-generated environment. If virtual reality is to become an effective tool for the safety training of mine workers, its attributes will have to be measured against other forms of delivery. Accordingly, Carr (1992) listed the following areas in which VR should be considered the method of choice: ? When training mistakes would be costly. ? When the necessary environment cannot be experienced in the real world. ? To build interfaces that are sensible and can be manipulated. ? To make training situations really "real." ?To make perceptible the imperceptible.

Though sedimentary rocks comprise only about five percent of the volume of the continental crust, they cover about 80% of its surface, serve as important reservoirs for fluids, contain reserves of non-metallic minerals, and have in general been extensively drilled. However, most drilling has been shallow in comparison to the thickness of the crust and such deep drilling as has taken place is very strongly localized in sedimentary basins. This may be seen by reference to Figures 1 and 2 which show the location of wells that drilled deeper than 15,000' [=] 4.6 km. (Figure 1) and those that drilled below 20,000' [=] 6.15 km. (Figure 2). It is apparent that, even in regions of sedimentary cover, direct exploration below six kilometers has been very restricted. In the case of the metamorphic and igneous rocks which make up 95% of the volume of the crust, direct exploration has been much less extensive in terms of both area and depth. The present state of our knowledge of the crust below a' thin surface layer stands in marked contrast to our growing present need for raw materials and the needs of future generations. It also stands in contrast to our need for enhanced, scientific knowledge of the deeper crust, its configuration, its present state, its hydrothermal systems,-its evolution, and its materials. Lessons learned in exploring the third dimension of the sea floor, the vigorous prosecution of seismic profiling, the development of testable models for hydrothermal systems and mineral deposits, the need for better understanding of heat flow, state of stress, earthquake mechanisms, and a host of other phenomena all suggest that it is time to launch a national program for scientific exploration of the crust which uses drilling to test important hypotheses developed on the basis of indirect evidence.

The literature contains several references to the influence of copper solvent extraction reagents on crud formation, but, there is disagreement as to whether the reagent has an influence on crud generation. The results of three pilot plant campaigns, where crud generation was studied as a function of the copper solvent extraction reagent, are reported. These pilot plants were run at operating copper solvent extraction plants using the aqueous solutions being treated by the commercial copper solvent extraction plants. Two of the pilot plant studies showed that the copper solvent extraction reagent had a significant influence on the extent of crud formation while the other pilot plant study indicated the copper solvent extraction reagent had a lesser influence on crud generation.

Cominco Snip is a 60: 40 joint venture of Cominco Ltd. and Prime Resources Group Inc. Cominco manages the operation. The mine site is located in a narrow mountain valley where Bronson Creek enters the Iskut River in Northwestern British Columbia. Access is by air only to the company's 1,500 meter airstrip. Milling at a designed feed rate of 300 tpd began on schedule in January 1991. Tonnage and gold production in the form of bullion bars from the gravity circuit and gold bearing float concentrate have exceeded design forecast. This presentation will examine many of the factors that influenced the final plant design inclusive of exploration findings, bench scale and pilot plant test results, environmental and social considerations, capital and projected operating costs and product transportation alternatives such as the operation's Hovercraft.

L. Cope Welcome. I am pleased to see so many people interested enough to stay until this last session of the last afternoon of the convention. Of the people on the panel here, everyone has done everything in placer mining, but we have tried to sectionalize it with each one of us taking a particular portion. Any one of us could probably answer any question. I am very pleased to see some well experienced people in the audience. To start the discussion, Joe, can you give us a brief comparison of pit and drill sampling? J. Wojcik They both have their place. If you expect your deposit is something that is going to have widespread fairly uniform grades, then the pits may be the way to go. If you are going to have something you have to trace for several miles down the river valley, you can't do it with pits and do a proper sampling job. C. McLain Joe, the end result of all of this is to go ahead and mine it if it is a deposit. Do you try to relate your drilling results to something in mining itself against the recovery, because the drilling in different types of ground will give you different kinds of recoveries, and mining in the end is what you are going to do? Do you try to relate this to your mining method?

The presence of radioactivity in uranium mill wastes has resulted in somewhat unique waste disposal methods. In addition to the common problems of disposing of large quantities of solid wastes, neutralizing acids, minimizing dissolved heavy metals, and clarifying all liquid effluents, the uranium mill operator must sample and analyze liquid effluents for micro-micro quantities of radionuclides such as, radium-226, thorium-230 and lead-210. Special disposal methods or decontamination procedures are required to meet the stringent limitations established by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission on the concentration of radionuclides in liquid effluents. Routine monitoring of the receiving stream is also normally required. In recent years there has been a growing concern about the radioactivity remaining in the uranium mill tailings, particularly at the sites of shut-down or dismantled mills. The State of Colorado, in cooperation with the industry, has adopted regulations for stabilization of inactive uranium mill tailings. The Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide operates mills for the recovery of uranium and vanadium at Uravan and Rifle in Colorado and a mill in the Gas Hills of Wyoming for uranium production. The company also owns former mill sites on which mill tailings are located at Maybell, Rifle, and Slick Rock in Colorado and at Green River, Utah. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods used by a few uranium mills, largely those operated by Union Carbide Corporation, to dispose of radioactive wastes, to discuss briefly the regulations under which the mills operate, and to present reference information on the subject.
