In ball milling the rates of breakage vary primarily with the size distribution of powder in the mill. In wet grinding viscosity of the slurry varies continually as size distribution changes and hence the breakage rates change. In this study a simpler estimation scheme is used to determine breakage rates in batch grinding. Using an approximate solution to the batch grinding equation, acceleration and deceleration of breakage rates of all individual size classes is determined when the grinding environment is varied. Experimental results with limestone and copper ore show time-dependent breakage rates under both dry and wet grinding conditions. In general the breakage rates increase for coarse sizes and decrease for fine sizes with increase in the fines present in the mill. Such variations have strong implications in closed-circuit grinding.

Success has been achieved in developing mathematical models of rod mills, ball mills and recently to a limited extent autogenous grinding mills. There is also considerable activity in the development of mathematical models of various mineral concentration opera¬tions, such as flotation, magnetic separation and electrostatic concentration. However, at present there is a technological gap which hinders the integration of both size reduction and mineral concentration models into an overall process simulation model. This gap exists because size reduction models have been aimed at describing the size of the product and have not dealt with the equally important problem of identifying the product composition in each size fraction. Without this information the concentration model is ineffective. This situation is especially critical in the simulation of the magnetite-taconite beneficiation process, where a portion of the ore is rejected from the process following each stage of size reduction. Consideration has therefore been given to the merging of a size reduction model and a mineral liberation model to permit prediction of mineral composition as a function of size. The results of this integration of size reduction and mineral liberation models are discussed from both theoretical and practical viewpoints using batch grinding data for a magnetite iron formation sample as a demonstration vehicle.

A quality assurance program consists of all those activities aimed at providing confidence to the purchaser that the suppliers quality system will provide a product that will satisfy the purchaser's stated quality requirement. An organizing principle is necessary for prioritizing the quality control activities of quality personnel in the face of a myriad of technical possibilities, data-analytic applications, and an overwhelming number of possible activities promoted in the literature and by quality "gurus". The organizing principle I like is that quality assurance exists when those involved in the quality process: (1) know what they are supposed to do, (2) can tell if they are doing it and are set up to continue doing it and, (3) if they are not, they can remedy the situation in a timely fashion. Any incremental activity which facilitates this organizing principle is a continuous improvement activity. That activity which has the chance to facilitate this principle to the greatest extent is the next one to work on. In these days of lean corporate and regional staffs it is as important to know what not to work on as it is to know what to work on. In this paper I shall discuss in general terms the implications of this organizing principle for the design of Quality Assurance (QA) Programs for coal mines and also provide some comments about the application of Statistical Process Control (SPC) methodologies in the coal industry.

It is truly remarkable how the image of longwall as a method of mining has changed. Between 1920 and 19609 viewed on a world wide basis, longwall was regarded as a' system for difficult and deep conditions and associated with intensive labour extraction. Today the world looks on longwall in the hope that it can produce the next really big break through in productivity, Three correlated machinery developments have made this possible, but it is not only the machinery developments, interesting though these be in themselves, but together with developments in control systems of these machines that longwall now looks so much more attractive, The machinery concerned is, of courses:- 1. The Anderton Shearer Loader - A miner that takes a narrow strip off the, face at rates acceptable to modern mining engineers. 2. An Armoured Flexible, Conveyor which can be kept in close contact with the face and still convey coal as it is snaked over to the faces 3. Powered support systems which can be mechanised and controlled with reliability at any distance from the individual support itself.

Dust dispersion characteristics in mine airways are important for developing engineering controls for dust and explosions. Authors here have used CFD modeling approach to analyze the dust dispersion characteristics in mine airways. The technique was initially validated with the published field experimental data. The results obtained were in a reasonable agreement. CFD validation results show that in a single entry the dust concentration decreases exponentially as a function of distance. Finer particles can travel up to a distance of 350-400 m away from the source. Parametric studies indicate that air velocity and input dust concentration has significant influence on dust concentration distribution. CFD modeling was then applied to study the dust dispersion characteristics in a room-and-pillar mine layout. Preliminary results show that dust concentration distribution is highly dependent on the airflow patterns and air velocity distribution. The distribution is not exponential until the velocity in the travel way becomes uniform. Data developed in this study may be used to design mine layouts and engineering controls for dust control and explosions.

New concepts in shaft kiln processing are included in the design of two large diameter shaft kiln plants now under construction. One kiln will be used to produce cement clinker at the Boettcher plant of the Ideal Cement Company at Fort Collins, Colorado. The other kiln is for the semi-commercial oil shale plant for Petrobras, the Brazil National Oil Company at Sao Mateus do Sul, Parana, Brazil. Investigations on application of the new concepts are proceeding in a portable pilot kiln. Beneficiation of-low-grade nonmetalliferous mineral deposits by electronic color sorting is currently undergoing a period of rapid development. For those deposits in which the specific gravity, strength, soundness, electric and magnetic properties of the ore and gangue are similar the possibility of separation by color, reflectivity, or fluorescence offers hope for utilization of much poorer quality ore than previously thought possible. For those ores in which consistency of color is required or for which a dry process is preferred, the electronic color sorter is particularly adaptable. Electronic color sorters were first designed to process agricultural products and were small low-capacity units. However, the recent introduction of larger machines designed to process 6-in, diameter ore at a rate of 30 to 50 tph (Anonymous, 1966a), has brought color sorting into the capacity range required by many mineral producers.

This paper is written primarily from the standpoint of the miner and consumer of Missouri fireclays in refractory products, principally firebrick used in the linings of blast furnaces, hot metal transfer cars, the recuperators of glass melting tanks, and other allied uses involving contact with liquid metals and reactive slags. For these uses the manufacturing plant requires forecast of certain physical characteristics, as well as chemical characteristics, of the raw clays as a determination of practicability of mining, treatment such as pre -firing or calcining, and final usage area. These methods and results may leave something to be desired from an academic view, but are used my operation as an on-running guide to seeking and mining raw material. The high quality fireclays of Missouri are generally differentiated by the user as the softer, somewhat plastic, "bond" clays and the so-called flint clays suitable for a fired or unfired aggregate portion of a brick composition. The semi-plastic "bond" clays are mined in a producing area of northeast Missouri including Montgomery, Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, and Lincoln counties. In this geographic area the clays are the members of the cheltenham formation and occur in rather large lenses in which the usable members may approach 15 meters in thickness and an area of 6o to 8o acres. Overburden is dependent on the surface topography and, in our operations, varies from 8 meters to 25 meters. It can be up to 36 meters in the prairie uplands, but this is rarely strip mined. There was former mining by shaft and drift methods in which the overlying coal was also worked. These clays are primarily used as a binding material for other clay aggregates and is characterized by its lower refractoriness-cone 3o (165o c) to cone 321/2 (172o c), in terms of pyrometric cone equivalent, and an alumina - Al2o3 - content of plus or minus 31%. This chapter is concerned with the construction of the dynamic component of belt haulage systems. The dynamic system includes the belt line and tailpiece extension and retraction movements in a production system where mine management is continually placing the belt in the most effective operating position. Correct installation of the belt and tailpiece during an extension is very important for many performance reasons. Two of the most important reasons are to eliminate spillage and safely operate the belt line. This chapter is divided into three major discussions. The first discussion looks at analyzing the parameters of effective belt line construction. This includes a review of the parameters and management tools needed for proper scheduling of a move-up. The second major discussion topic centers on efficient procedures for a belt line extension. Topics such as site preparation, tailpiece breakdown and setup, stringing the belt line and structure, plus operating and maintenance tasks needed after the belt line is installed and running, are covered. The third discussion presents a list of conveyor and conveyor component manufacturers who provide services and products to the coal mining industry. Again, any discussion on underground haulage systems must generalize much of the site specific design approaches to be practical. This text will mention, where applicable, some of the alternatives available to construction engineers in designing belt line systems.

Less than optimum production in mining always results when poorly blasted material is provided at loading points. More often than not the cause is due to blasting founds that fail to fully control and utilize explosive energy. In many cases the problem exists because too few blasters understand how blastholes actually break rock and recognize that blasting is a three-dimensional process in designing their blasts. To better understand how blasts can be more effectively designed the two major rock breakage processes are described. In addition, the respective contributions of the borehole and detonation pressures are defined as are the specific roles of the several important blasting design variables. The concept of stiffness as an engineering principle and its significance in blasting design is introduced for explaining the breakup of rock. Basic guidelines for affecting control over fragmentation and side effects like over-break are offered.

In recent years limited markets have been developed for fly ash, the dust removed from coal-burning powerplant stacks, but most of it is still dumped in spoils areas at a cost ranging from 20 cents to $1.75 per ton. Aside from this cost, the creation of huge spoils areas can present a considerable aesthetic problem. Since the present annual fly ash output of about 20 million tons will probably reach 30 million by 1970, and because satisfactory disposal areas are becoming more limited, markets for much larger quantities of the waste are needed to keep disposal costs from becoming a significant economic factor in coal-burning powerplant operation. Current stress on air-pollution control and beautification, plus the vital need for good powerplant economy, makes it imperative, therefore, that coal producers and consumers expand markets and develop new applications for fly ash. Markets for established uses can be increased by making a greater effort to sell fly ash. New large tonnage markets for fly ash should be sought via more intensive, coordinated research. The economics of fly ash utilization underscores the vital role that must be played by research. To be competitive with other products, processes for the conversion of fly ash into marketable materials face difficulty in regard to two important economic factors--transportation cost and product utility--the other economic factors are favorable. Raw material costs of fly ash, for example, are quite attractive, and supply is no problem because there are many coal-burning powerplants in operation and many more are planned. Demand for products made from fly ash will grow if their utility is established and a good sales program is initiated. The major problems then are transporta¬tion costs and development of useful products.

The Simon Silver Mine is located near Mina, Nevada, approximately 50 miles northwest of Tonopah and 40 miles east of Hawthorne. It is an old property which was last worked in 1932 and closed operations due to problems arising from low metal prices. Federal Resources Corp. acquired the property in 1963 and undertook a completely new development program since the old surface plant and underground workings were beyond feasible repair. The deposit of silver, lead, zinc and copper is predominantly replacement of limestone. In the summer of 1964, a new surface plant was constructed and on December 2, 1964, sinking of a three compartment vertical shaft started and was completed to a depth of 1088 feet in April of 1965. Following the sinking program an 850 foot crosscut was driven to intersect the mineral zone on the 1000 level after which drifting, crosscutting and raising totaling some additional 4280 feet has been completed along with considerable diamond drilling and long holing into the walls. To date, two ore bodies have been encountered and test stoping operations are underway together with development of the 800 level for servicing, ventilation and access. The present development of ore is directed towards substantiating sufficient reserves to warrant the construction of a flotation mill.

The Mission Valley Light Rail will loop through San Diego State University (SDSU)and to minimize the impact of construction most of the works will be underground. The project will require construction of a 330-m long (1080-ft), 11.24-m wide (36.9-ft),single twin track tunnel through Stadium Conglomerate, a poorly cemented dense sandy gravel with cobbles. Key technical issues are discussed including the ground conditions and predicted ground response, the use of sequential excavation methods to control deformations and specific construction concerns such as instrumentation and monitoring. Management of the construction process to minimize risk is particularly important in this environment and the strategy selected to control the works is also considered.

ABSTRACT The presence of gold in lateritic crusts over mafic and ultramafic volcanogenic complexes in / and greenstohe belts, has called the attention in several parts of Brazil and also in Australia. Recent studies reveal the variety of structures and mineralogy of such crusts, and their importance in correlation with host(bed) rock types, as exploration guides, specially for greenstone belt metallogeny. The expected nature of growth of plates and/or nuggets in such crusts is under detailed study, and is considered as possibly due to dissolution and reprecipitation phenomenae of disseminated-fine-low grade ore in the host rock, in this investigation, laterite geochemistry, though incipiently discussed todate, is of fundamental importance and significance. Lateritic gold can be classified texturally as: dusty and diffused, fine, thin platy, taDular, and nuggets. Such gold is pure, and is often restricted to nodular (pisoliths, ooliths, concretions) forms or the matrix, that constitute the crusts or lateritised gravel beds which have an essentially goetnitic nature. Further this gold is recovered directly by mining the crusts or the adjoining placers with the metal derived from them. The thickness and extension of laterite crust zones is extremely variable depending oh the paleoclimatic conditions, and is conditioned to the favourable lithology and its structural expression. However, the "growth" of gold in these laterites will be conductive , without doubt, to several small scale mining activities, specially in the developing countries and regions limited to latitudes 309N and 309S.

Optimization of the rock cutting performance plays a major role in the tunneling operation. For a given set of tool and cutting environment, rock fragments may be chipped away in numerous manners and it is crucial to understand and be able to predict the dynamics at the cutter-rock interface. This paper presents rational and realistic 3D finite element modeling of rock cutting where typical computational issues ?such as contact formulation, appropriate rock material response, mesh distortion, and crack propagation? are overcome. Cutting forces and failure mechanisms in this finite element analysis are successfully validated by laboratory single-cutter scratching tests in sandstone.

The technically troubled new LANDSAT-4/Thematic Mapper (TM) land observational satellite remote sensing system has provided dramatically new and important short wave infrared (SWIR) data, which combined with Landsat's Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) visible (VIS), very near infrared (VNIR), and thermal infrared (TI) data will greatly improve regional geological mapping on a global scale. The TM will significantly improve clay, iron oxide, bauxite, and nickel laterite mapping capabilities over large areas of the world. It will also improve the ability to discriminate vegetation stress and species distribution associated with lateritic environments. Examples of the application of remote sensing for nickeliferous and aluminous laterites are illustrated. Nickel laterites on Gag Island, Indonesia are defined by MSS imagery. Satellite imagery of the Weipa, Cape Bougainville, and the Darling Range, Australia bauxite deposits show the potential use of MSS data for exploration and mining applications. Examples of satellite and airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for Jamaica and West Kalimantan, Indonesia document the use of this method for bauxite exploration. Thematic Mapper data will be combined with the French SPOT satellite's high spatial resolution and stereoscopic digital data, and U.S., Japanese, European, and Canadian Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to assist with logistics, mine development, and environmental concerns associated with bauxite and other lateritic deposits worldwide.

The Deep Ore Zone mine is the third lift of caving at PT Freeport Indonesia’s East Ertsberg Skarn System. An increasing trend in seismicity along the northern boundary of the DOZ cave, as well as the northern fringes of the DOZ production and infrastructure levels, was taken as indicative of an interaction between the approaching DMLZ cave and the DOZ subsidence zone. Seismicity trends and locations indicated a reducing crown pillar and an associated stress increase along these DOZ excavations, as well as the regional area along the DOZ cave boundaries. Although rockbursts were not identified as an immediate hazard, seismic shakedown was a highly probable hazard in the case of remote large (≥3.0) seismic events. An evaluation process, as described in the Canadian Rockburst Support Handbook (1996), was followed to identify and quantify the various parameters that could contribute to a shakedown evaluation. A shakedown assessment, based on the Peak Particle Velocities scaling relation, was conducted to assess the current installed ground support systems along the northern fringes and the fixed facilities of the DOZ mine. The range in ground support systems were mostly due to different geotechnical environments. The load–deformation characteristics of these support systems were evaluated to determine the support capacity and compared to the potential support demand under varying shakedown conditions. Shakedown hazard maps were compiled to indicate the installed ground support system’s vulnerability to seismic shaking. Based on this information, areas were divided into zones indicating whether they were sufficiently supported, additional support was required, access was to be restricted, and / or they were to be abandoned. Mine management utilised these hazard maps to strategize actions for the various operational zones within the DOZ, including the fixed facilities. This paper briefly describes the derivation of the PPV scaling relationship. Seismic and geological data for the DMLZ – DOZ interaction areas were evaluated to determine the likely source of large events. Subsequent larger events and their effects are shown to assess the veracity of the magnitude and PPV estimates, as well as the effectiveness and appropriateness of the ground support systems.

Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition, and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.
