It is said that Thales of Miletus, 600 B.C.,1 was aware of the attraction of lodestone toward iron and highly magnetic minerals. However, the birth of magnetic concentration followed shortly after the invention of the first electromagnet by Sturgeon in 1825. Sturgeon's magnet was described in the annals of electricity.2 The first attempts to concentrate minerals by the use of magnets date back to about 18473 but the first commercial drum-concentrator was apparently invented by R. Cook in 1849. Credit must also be given to the invention of P. Righter's machine in 1867,5 and to the highly successful Wenström separator devised in Sweden in 1883.8 Since the advent of these early separators there have been virtually hundreds of patents granted covering minor modifications of drum-type magnetic separators. The more important advances from a technological viewpoint have been the design of stable power supplies for d.c. magnets, the advent of ceramic permanent magnets which are now replacing electromagnets for the concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, and advances in general magnet and machine configurations.7 One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.8 Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity one-half inch from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Figure 1). INTRODUCTION The Endako deposit was first explored in 1926, but development waited until the early nineteen sixties. It first came under the control of Placer Development in 1963, and early in 1964 a decision to bring it into production was reached. The deposit is located near the geographic center of British Columbia, and is served by an east-west communication system including a paved highway, mainline railway and good telephone, teletype, and computer facilities. The plant area is shown in Figure 1. The operation is known as the Endako Mines Division of Canex Placer Limited of Vancouver. First production was achieved in June, 1965, at a nominal rate of 10,000 tons per day, but it soon was closer to 15,000 tons per day. In 1967, two new grinding and flotation sections brought capacity to the present rate of approximately 27,000 tons per day. With mill heads of around 0.15 percent MoS2, production is about 14,000,000 pounds of molybdenum per year. A flowsheet of the operation is given in Figure 2. A legend for this flowsheet is given in Table 1. Published ore reserves are estimated at 214,500,000 tons at an average grade of 0.143 percent MoS2. The Deep Coal Seam Project is a multi- year, large-scale research and development effort between the Gas Research Institute (GRI) and Resource Enterprises, Inc. (REI). The project is being conducted at the Red Mountain Site, a multi-well test site located in the southeastern portion of the Piceance Basin near Collbran in Mesa County, Colorado. The project objective is to develop the drilling, reservoir evaluation, completion and production technology required to produce gas from a thick, deeply buried coal seam. To understand the parameters controlling gas production, project efforts are focused on the Cameo "D" coal reservoir which lies at a depth of about 1707 m (5,600 ft) at the test site. This paper overviews the drilling, testing, completion, and production techniques used on the 1, 2 and 3 Deep Seam wells and implications for resource development.

The procedure to arrive at an energy efficient autogenous grinding plant is carried out in the following steps: First Step - Determine power requirements to grind a particular ore. This work carried out on small samples ground in a 450 mm diameter Aerofall Hill and the results are checked against a standard Bond Index test. Second Step - A bulk sample from the ore zone is ground in a 1.8 m diameter pilot mill. This work is carried on until the power objectives as indicated from the first step have been realized. Third Step - Correlate the pilot mill data, with the data from the numerous samples ground in the small 450 mm mill and arrive at design criteria for the commercial plant. Ensure commercial mill design will be suitable to obtain similar results as those obtained in the pilot mill.

Mooranbah North is a new greenfield project in Australia's Bowen Basin that is projected to produce 4 mtpa of hard coking coal from a single longwall. Located in Central Queensland in Australia's northeast, this is one of Australia's main coal producing regions. From the outset, Mooranbah North's approach to equipment selection has differed markedly from that usually taken in the mining industry, and the conveyor industry in particular. Until recently, no performance requirements have been placed on conveyor equipment suppliers. This arose from a practice of purchasing components in an ad-hoc manner from a variety of sources, and the mine then configuring the system. More recently, single source supply has been adopted as a means of obtaining some performance guarantee, usually expressed in terms of system availability. Unfortunately, the term "availability" has a multitude of definitions, particularly in the underground coal sector. A conveyor availability of 98% is a common goal but this rarely means the conveyor must operate 165 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. There are mines that have one maintenance shift for each production shift and claim availability of 100%. What is meant is that no down time is logged to the conveyor during the hours that it is wanted. This "generous" definition of availability would not be tolerated in many industries and nor should it. Unfortunately, a true definition of availability, such as is applied to steam turbines in the power generation industry, is not particularly helpful. Five day/ week operations would immediately face a 28% penalty against 7 day rosters, and there would be no sensible manner in which weekend maintenance could be incorporated into the availability formula. The approach adopted by Mooranbah North was to specify a period of "Failure Free Operation," which would be followed by a maintenance period. This

Copper price rebounds A worldwide scramble for diminishing supplies of copper has pushed the red metal's price to more than $2.20/kg ($1 per lb), the highest level since 1980. The first nine months of 1987, world copper production was down 1% from a year ago, while consumption rose 7%. Demand has been fueled by economic strength in several countries, particularly Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The price has also been helped by interest rate declines that have prompted manufacturers to build up inventories. In addition, China is expected to be a major buyer in 1988 as it stocks up for its five-year industrialization plan. There appears to be no sign of any significant increase in copper supplies until later 1988 or early 1989. This means supplies probably will remain tight for some time even if world economic activity slows. Strikes and other production problems slowed world output of copper in 1987. As a result, copper supplies are the lowest they have been in 14 years. World inventories currently total 625 kt (690,000 st). That is not much above the 585 kt (645,000 st) level reached in 1974 when the price of copper rose to a record $3.84/kg ($1.74 per lb). This makes all the more interesting what Chile, the world's largest copper producer, has been doing lately. Chile has been the world's largest copper producer since 1982, when it overtook the United States. Table 1 shows Chile's copper grades, reserves, and production at its mines. Chile contains roughly one-fifth of the world's copper reserves. At present production rates, these reserves would last for more than 100 years. In 1986, Chile produced 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of fine copper, up 3%. Chile accounted for 17% of the world's copper output.

Improvement of current leaching technology was found necessary when processing ores which are more difficult to leach because they generate highly viscous, air-rejective pulps. Cyanidation of these pulps has to run at low oxygen concentrations if the conventional aeration technique with compressed air is used. Since the dissolution rate of precious metals mainly depends on the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp [1, 4, 5], the kinetics of the gold extraction become slow in such cases, which in turn often leads to a significant decrease in the overall gold output within the conventional leaching time of up to 48 hours.

The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the manufactured product. Clearly, the engineer who is responsible for selecting a mode of transport must base his decision, at least in large measure, on economic comparisons. And today, the engineer usually finds that he has to choose between several modes, including slurry pipelines. For the purpose of an initial economic screening, it is not necessary to go deeply into the technical details of a slurry system. What is usually needed, however, is a method with which the engineer can make a quick economic assessment to determine whether a slurry pipeline should be included in the detailed final analysis. This paper presents a rapid method for making such a preliminary appraisal. Experience with commercial slurry pipeline systems in several countries and with a variety of solid materials has shown that if several assumptions pertaining to critical design variables are made, it is possible to roughly estimate the transportation cost of a slurry system on the basis of only three factors: the specific gravity of the solid material, the length of the system, and the quantity of slurry to be pumped each year. It is assumed that conditions pertaining to field construction, corrosion inhibition, and the like, will be favorable. This assumption is critical because any factor which analysis shows to be particularly unfavorable will raise the total transportation cost estimate which this paper establishes. If the engineer employs this estimating procedure and decides that the use of a slurry pipeline is economically unattractive, his chances of being wrong are small. Conversely, if his quick appraisal indicates that the use of a slurry system is economically favorable, the engineer is justified in committing the time and money needed to make a more detailed investigation of the slurry pipeline potential.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a viable method of reinforcing rock pillars by utilizing fully grouted reinforcing steel and a cement- fly ash mortar. Although the fully bonded bolt concept is not new as exemplified by the present widespread use of resin bolts within United States mines and by the use of cement grouted reinforcing used as back pins in the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in northern Sweden, (1)(2)the method of stabilizing mine pillars with fully bonded reinforcing is new. This method, called the "grout-rebar system", was first incorporated at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Fletcher Mine in December of 1972. The system was used on an emergency basis before extensive research on the mechanics of the system could be completed. Since Decmeber of 1972, however, approximately 206 pillars have been reinforced at Fletcher and the system is currently being used on a regular basis at two other St. Joe mines and at two competitor mines in the area. Basically, this paper is a case study of the efforts, research and results of utilizing the grout-rebar system, on a selective basis, at the Fletcher Mine. In addition to information about the system, this paper will explain in detail the three rock mechanics instruments developed by St. Joe and used to measure and monitor rock movement to validate the group-rebar system.

The demand for good white minerals for many industries including paint and plastics have made it necessary to import high grade industrial minerals from various parts of the world. Some of the calcium carbonate, barite and talc minerals are from China, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti. These materials can be processed by custom processors. The custom processor can provide a service to the Industrial Mineral owner. The imported materials can arrive in various feed sizes from lumps (3"-6") down to 325 mesh. The materials can also be in various size shipments or container loads. The economics for importing should be investigated thoroughly. The two factors just mentioned can influence the quantity of material to be processed. These two factors can also influence the total cost for each end product.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is currently investigating the electrochemistry of mineral flotation. A significant need in this area is greater reliability of sensors. The USBM is testing electrolytic methods to clean and condition redox-sensing electrodes to improve the reliability and extend the service life of these instruments in the harsh physical and chemical environment of mineral processing slurries. A novel method for removing scale from fouled electrodes has been developed that includes anodic polarization to 1.2 V versus the Ag/AgCl reference potential, followed by brief potentiodynamic conditioning. Laboratory results show that this technique removes calcarious deposits from gold sensing electrodes and returns the electrode to useful service within approximately 10 min. Mechanical abrasion to remove the scale is thereby avoided.

"This study adopts and analyzed a shield tunneling case in Taiwan, with a diameter from 5.25m to 6.70m and the smallest radius of curvature 100m, which was constructed in gravel formations as well as a vibration sensitive area. In this case study, a vibration monitoring plan, comprising the sensors inside the shield machine and on the surface, was proposed and performed to provide the vibration data during the construction. In this project, the major vibration reduction considerations were increasing the open ratio of the cutter head (to reduce the cutting function) and reducing the rotational speed of the cutter head. The results of the construction suggest the appropriateness of the above considerations. The findings could provide suggestions to the other similar shield tunneling cases. INTRODUCTION Underground vibrations during shield tunneling are typically isolated and absorbed by the soil. However, a portion of these vibrations may disseminate to the surface. These vibrations are considered micro-vibrations, which generally do not pose a threat to surface structures, and are thus seldom the focus of research. The present project was located in the Hsinchu Science Park where shield excavation bypassed numerous high technology manufacturing plants (e.g., wafer manufacturing plants). The vibrations generated by shield tunneling may affect the vibration-sensitive manufacturing equipment and instruments in these plants, and induce problems in manufacturing processes. Therefore, research to comprehensively understand the characteristics and potential influence of such vibrations is essential. To clarify the characteristics and potential influences of vibrations generated during shield tunneling, the vibration level in the excavation of the Taoyuan International Airport Access (TIAA) Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Project was examined, as it possesses similar excavation conditions to the present project. The parameters collected from relevant tests were provided as a reference to the firms along the excavation route of the present project to explain the effects of vibrations, and to relevant units for shield machine selection and project execution. No yield problems resulting from shield machine induced vibrations were reported by the firms, and the vibration levels measured in the present project were comparatively lower than those in the TIAA MRT Project. Because the related literature is scarce, this study aims to analyze the collected measurement data and provide suggestions on shield machine selection or designs. Such that we can more properly evaluate and control the impact of shield tunneling induced vibrations in similar projects."

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for the highly mechanized PT. Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The deep ore zone (DOZ) is a coppergold deposit that is being developed underneath the current intermediate ore zone (IOZ) mine. One of the company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady ore flow of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) by 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

The Bulagidun copper-gold system occurs in Tertiary andesitic volcanic rocks. It is located (figure 1, from Curless, 1991) ca. two days walk from the coast in an isolated area on the northerly slope of the main range of mountains, in steep terrain dissected by erosion. Detailed and district-scale exploration from 1988 to 1991 by BHP Minerals defined a small, sub-economic resource of gold and copper. One preliminary estimate of the resource in bedrock suggests 14.4 million tons at 0.68 grams / Tonne Au and 0.61% Cu, in multiple small bodies.

The solutions used in the heap biooxidative treatment of sulfidic refractory Au ores and concentrates generally load free mineral acid and metals and, in time, become bacteria activity inhibiting due to increased acid and/or metals concentrations. The metals­acid loaded, bacteria action inhibiting, solution must then be: (a) processed, prior to re-use, to reduce its metals and/or free acid mineral acid components to bacteria activity compatible levels; or (b) neutralized prior to discharge. The most common solution processing method to adjust acid-metals contents is liming to effect the precipitation of dissolved metals and neutralization of acid sufficient for solution discharge or re-use. The lime treated solution is high in suspended, colloidal precipitates and requires clarification before reuse. Most often the "bleedstream" of biooxidation solution that is lime treated is discharged and req­uisite volumes of fresh water added to the process inventory. Depending on the level of bacterial action in a heap and the acid consumption characteristics of the ore/concentrate being biooxi­dized, the bleedstream taken from the circulating, irrigation on­off, solution, can be large (e.g., 10%-20% and sometimes as much as 50% of the daily solution flow requires treatment-dis­charge). The lime charge for bleedstream treatment is commen­surately large and represents a major operating cost of the bioox­idation process. The patented HW Process Technologies (HWPT) Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS™) method is an alternative biooxi­dation bleedstream treatment method. EMS™ processing removes the multivalent base metals ions in an acid solution to a small volume EMS™ "concentrate" (typically 25% of the feed­stream volume). The EMS™ method coincidentally makes a "clean acid" EMS™ "permeate" (typically 75% of the feed­stream volume). In general, EMSTM processing enables 75% of the bleedstream volume to be recycled; allows up to 2/3 of the bleedstream acid to be recovered as a 10% solution; and delivers dissolved metals in a highly concentrated stream suited to a. metals recovery or b. reduced cost lime neutralization for a given metals precip­itation relative to full bleedstream neutralization (typically a 30% lime use savings). Implicit in the recovery of process water for re-use and reduced reagent addition requirement for metals precipitation is a significant reduction in wastewater-sludge dis­posal facility size.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

Introduction Flotation is a recovery process that utilizes natural or chemically-introduced hydrophobicity of minerals to separate ore from gangue by attaching the ore particles to bubbles. Flotation has been known since 1906, when it was patented by E. L. Sulman, H. G. K. Pickard and John Ballot. Flotation's first documented plant use was in 1911, when it was used on gravity tailings from a zinc plant. Cyanide leaching was first patented in 1887. Most early precious metals flotation was linked to lead or copper concentrates. Most precious metal flotation is linked to sulfide recovery and utilizes such reagents as xanthates, dithiophosphates and thiocarbanilides. But the involvement of flotation in precious metals recovery does not have to be limited to active flotation of the gold and silver bearing minerals. Flotation can be used to remove interfering minerals, such as carbon, or cyanicides, such as copper, arsenic bearing minerals or other cyanide complexing minerals. Cyanide Leaching The use of cyanide to recover precious metals is the backbone of the industry. The various recovery processes that use cyanide are: 1. Leaching-Counter Current Decantation(CCD) Merrill-Crowe 2. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) 3. Carbon-in-leach (CIL) 4. Vat leaching 5. Heap leaching These processes are selected depending on ore grade, ore leaching characteristics, reserve size and capital limitations. Ore grade is used as the first criteria to determine the type of cyanide plant required. However, the reserve size can determine whether a ground ore alternative is used. The ore leaching characteristics may indicate that the higher recovery, associated with a process that employs grinding, is the only economic recovery alternative. There are some extremely large leaching plants with grades that would be non-economic for some existing heap leach plants. Many factors, such as strip ratios, metal recovery and reserve size, determine what the ultimate plant design will be. The exact processing scheme that is used, is a multifaceted decision matrix, which gives the process metallurgist some job security. Precious Metal Recovery Using Flotation Flotation recovery can conceivably be used on any ore that has been ground. Many operations utilize gravity separation on the ore to remove native gold from the ore prior to sending it to cyanide leaching. The rocks exposed in the phosphate district are of Neogene age and consist of clayey quartz and phosphorite sands overlying phosphatic dolomite. The Bone Valley Formation is redefined as a marine phosphorite containing primary phosphorite and abundant terrigenous sediments. It contains a Middle Miocene vertebrate and invertebrate fauna and conformably overlies the Hawthorn Formation containing similar invertebrate fauna. A new, unnamed formation, with Pliocene and Pleistocene fauna and containing reworked phosphorite, overlies the Bone Valley disconformably. Its phosphorite is derived from the subjacent Bone Valley by post-Middle Miocene erosion and deposition in stream channels and marginal marine environments. The Bone Valley contains two main types of primary marine phosphorite. Orthocbemical phosphorite, a direct precipitate of microcrystalline phosphorite (microsphorite), occurs as a cement or binder in thin beds. Allochemical phosphorite consists of clastic phosphorite particles that were originally formed as microsphorite on another part of the shelf. Microsphorite was deposited in a very shallow open marine environment which had an abnormally high phosphorous content caused by upwelling currents. The mechanism of deposition is still in doubt, but organisms probably were a major factor. Soon after deposition, microsphorite was indurated, periodically torn up, and the resulting fragments transported and deposited elsewhere on the shelf. These processes account for a great portion of the clastic phosphorite in the Miocene deposits of Florida. The primary fossil skeletal material is of minor importance.

This paper deals with problems of groundwater development in an insular circum-Pacific environment, and is not oriented as such to mining and mineral development. Nonetheless, because a reliable water supply is necessary for most mining and related support activities, and since water supplies are limited in many insular parts of the Pacific Basin, groundwater development is a subject which must be frequently addressed. Because many in the audience may be already familiar with groundwater development for continental environments, I have chosen to deal with groundwater occurrence and development problems which for the most part are unique to insular environments. In such environments, the local geology plays a critical role in determining groundwater occurrence and its suitability for development. The three examples discussed in this paper-Hawaii, Guam, and the Marshall Islands-were selected because they illustrate groundwater occurrence in a wide range of geologic conditions. For example, the Hawaiian aquifers consist primarily of basaltic lavas, while Guam is made up of andesitic lavas and coral reef limestones, and the Marshall Islands are coral atoll deposits. Despite differences in aquifer size and rock types, the principal mode of groundwater occurrence at the three sites is similar; thus, development strategies are also similar. Figure 1 shows the location of the three sites.
