A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator was granted in 1881 in the U.S. this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. However, this development was only possible in parallel with the development of shiftable belt conveyors and boom stackers. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generating, despite the low heating value of German lignite in the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 BTU/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is in the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite. These cost advantages for lignite in Germany are due mainly to the concentration of lignite mining in a few high-output open pit mines. The largest one, Fortuna Mine in the Cologne district, produced a, total of 45 000 000 t lignite in 1976. That equals the annual fuel need of a 5750 MW power plant running 7000 hours per year at full capacity. Altogether 95 200 000 bank m3 equal to 200 000 000 t overburden had to be removed to accomplish this lignite output. The largest BWE (Fig. 1) ever built is working in the Fortuna Mine, too. At a digging height of 51 m above crawler level, the total vertical reach in relation to the face conveyor level is 98 m by means of its conveying bridge and loading unit. The hourly output is 10 400 bank m3. Its weight in operation is 13 000 t, its wheel diameter 21.6 m, as high as a 7-storey building.

NEW ROUTES - 63rd STREET CROSSTOWN The New Route construction along East 63rd Street in Manhattan began in 1969 with the East River tunnel connecting Manhattan and Queens. The 63rd Street Line, once in Queens, is planned to connect to another new route called the Queens By Pass or Super Express (See Exhibit 1) which would connect to the Queens Boulevard Line at Forest Hills. The purpose of the Queens By Pass was to alleviate subway congestion to and from the Borough of Queens, whose population had rapidly expanded during and after World War II. The existing Queens Boulevard subway lines (the "E" and the "F" trains) are almost filled to capacity at their terminal stations with passengers from Long Island. Passengers boarding trains enroute from the local Queens stations have difficulty boarding crowded trains, and, at times, cannot board the trains. The New Routes, thus, were to give additional train capacity into Manhattan and thereby relieve the crowded conditions along the Queens Boulevard corridor. PROFILE - METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The portion of the New Route passing east-west under East 63rd Street on Manhattan (See Exhibit 2) had to snake beneath intersecting structures running north and south, such as the Con Rail tracks below Park Avenue and the 80 ft deep Lexington Avenue Express track structure along Lexington Avenue. Oxidation potentials have been measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH and related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are constructed and show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide in the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of many investigations (1,2,3,4,5,6), and from these studies several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved. Wark and Cox (7) and Gaudin(8) have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues (9,10,11) have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland (12) has shown that both of these theories describe accurately the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition but fail to describe the relationship, between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart(12) suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar(4,6) has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg/liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10; these results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface.

he power generation industry may be required to reduce carbon dioxide (C02) emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2 and would be a likely target for CO2 reductions. Compliance with the Kyoto Protocol will require a 33% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level, even with moderate load growth. This article describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs. It assesses how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered. The Global Climate Change Treaty signed at the Rio de Janiero Earth Summit in June 1992 set the long-term goal of stabilizing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The December 1997 Kyoto Protocol established short-term mandatory targets for the United States and 37 other developed countries. The United States' target is a 7% decrease by 2012 from the 1990 "greenhouse gas" level. Developing countries are exempted from reductions, according to the Kyoto Protocol, despite projections that indicate a significant increase in their emission levels. The Kyoto Protocol must be ratified by the US Senate. US power industry carbon emissions were 490 Mt (540 million st) in 1990 and are projected to be 680 Mt (749 million st) in 2012, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2. In 1989, United States mine production of barite decreased 13% while world mine production decreased by 8.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 21.2%. And imports decreased by 12.8%. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, increased 17.4%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported crude barite during 1989 increased from $38.10/t ($34.56 per st) in 1988 to $40.27/t($36.54 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 77% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 75% of the domestic mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the nonoilfield sector. Of the total consumption used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 80% was used in drilling fluids. The other 20% was used in the non-oilfield sector, including barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1989. The average number of rotary rigs operating was 869, 7.2% less than the average of 936 in 1988. Crude barite imports were down 12.8% from 1988. Imports accounted for 73.8% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the US. China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 63% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 27.4%, Peru 4.3%, Chile 2.9%, and Canada and Mexico, each with 1.1 %. About 97% of the imported barite ore was used in the oilfield sector.

 The paper combines theoretical and experimental analysis to improve the accuracy of predicting paste yield stress by slump flow. It derives an analytical model of slump flow for yield stress, providing a theoretical basis for quantifying the rheological properties of paste with slump flow. The study uses three different tailings-prepared pastes and constructs an empirical yield stress model, showing high accuracy and good generality.

Cycles of mine convergence coincide with annual cycles of temperature and humidity in the mine. Laboratory measurements confirm that the presence of moisture reduces rock strength and induces internal rock stress. Findings are used in the design of mine openings.

Comminution methods for base metal and precious metal ores have had considerable attention from mine operators, equipment suppliers and design engineers for many years and much of their work has been well reported. This interest derives from a healthy concern with the costs of comminution, often the largest single cost factor in ore dressing of hard ores. Many imaginative innovations have resulted. One notices a trend toward autogenous and semi-autogenous methods, combined with a trend toward very large equipment. Unfortunately, there has been less obvious cost incentive to experiment with softer ores. This is unfortunate because the consequences of inappropriate comminution methods can have an important effect on overall economics by influencing down stream processing and salability of final products. This paper concerns some of the factors to be considered in the selection of comminution methods for potash ores, and gives some specific examples to illustrate some of the principles involved.

Gentlemen, the title of my paper is Surface Mining An Interim Land Use. Surface mining has become one of the major controversies of our time. This has happened in spite of the fact that all surface mining to date has involved only 6 million acres out of a total of 2300 million or approximately one-fourth of one percent of the total land area in the United States. I'm not going to dwell on whether peoples' perspectives are out of focus in light of the area involved, the energy crisis, national security, or the international balance of payments problem. While these things are all critically important, it is not the function of this paper to relate to them. Maybe the amount of attention attracted to surface mining is out of proportion to a lot of other things, but I don't feel that we should use that as a basis for procrastination. However, let me categorically state that anything that affects the surface of the earth is a form of land use --- be it an interstate highway, a power plant site, a golf course, a corn field, a strip mine, or the plot of ground on which your house is located.

NTRODUCTION The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and CERCLA (SUPERFUND), in many instances, has had an adverse economic impact on the hardrock mining industry. Over the last few years, many abandoned and active mining operations have been added to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Priority List (NPL) . When the property is placed on the NPL the operator or EPA is required to conduct extensive environmental assessments to determine if historical mining practices have degraded the existing environmental. If degradation has or will continue, the responsible party is required to implement appropriate remedial action plans. If a responsible party is not identified, the EPA implements a cleanup program. Experience has demonstrated abandoned and active mining operations are subject to RCRA, and possibly Super- fund, if the mine has not adopted appropriate hazardous waste disposal management procedures. If off-site contamination has occurred, the operator will be required to mitigate the impacts and will be required to adopt additional procedures to minimize future impacts. Since the passage of RCRA and Super- fund, many mining operators are adopting management procedures to monitor and inventory hazardous sub- stances and wastes generated, stored and disposed on site. Many operators are in a difficult position because ore, waste rock, process chemicals or other solid waste, in many instances, can be classified as hazardous waste. If the process or other solid waste is deemed to have the characteristics of a hazardous waste, the operator can inventory and adopt appropriate, in- expensive management procedures. However, if the ore or waste rock has hazardous waste characteristics, in- expensive control technologies are impossible to implement. Since existing statutes and regulations require hazardous waste control, the operator will be required to inventory, characterize and monitor all aspects of the mining operations including but not limited to exploration, mining, ore processing and waste disposal. During this process, geological, geotechnical, geochemical, waste and ore volumes, and process materials must be tracked throughout the mining process. To accomplish this task, the most cost effective method to maintain documented and accurate records, is through the implementation of an integrated database management system. The database management system can be used to model and simulate the entire mining operation and if necessary, used to predict whether the operation is in compliance with existing regulations. The developed database can also be used to operating optimize mining and disposal costs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated froth flotation techniques to remove heavy metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) from southeast Missouri lead mill tailings. It has been estimated that southeast Missouri contains between 200 and 300 million st of Pb tailings stored above ground. The tailings were classified as two distinct types: (1) pre- 1968 tailings from the Old Lead Belt (some more than 100 years old) and (2) post-1968 tailings from the New Lead Belt. The objectives of the investigation were to reduce the Pb remaining in the tailings to (500 ppm (<0.05% Pb) and to attempt to recover a marketable concentrate to offset a portion of the remediation costs. The remaining dolomite-limestone would then be used as mining backfill or agricultural limestone. Bench- scale froth flotation removed, in percent, 95 Pb, 84 Cu, and 54 Zn, leaving 94% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 40 Cu, and 300 Zn from the Old Lead Belt tailings. Separate flotation tests also removed, in percent, 85 Pb, 84 Cu, and 80 Zn, leaving 75% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 200 Cu, and 500 Zn from the New Lead Belt tailings . Concentrates recovered from the Old Lead Belt were retreated to produce a final Pb concentrate containing 72% Pb with a cleaner flotation recovery of 79%. Froth flotation proved to be a viable method to remove the heavy metals.

Gold production is one the most important mineral process­ing industries in Western Australia. The gold is usually found in either weathered oxidised zones, or associated with sulfides. In the latter case, oxidation is achieved by some form of chemical processing, such as roasting or more recently bacterial leaching. In all cases, gold is dissolved out of the oxidised matrix by cyanide solution. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide generally represented by the formula Fe1_,S where O x 0.125. Three different structural forms ofpyrrhotite are known to occur naturally, stoichiometric FeS (troilite), hexagonal pyrrhotite Fe1_xS and monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe7S8 [I]. Substitution of iron atoms within the pyrrhotite structure by other ions of similar atomic radius such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese is also possible [2], and often observed in natural pyrrhotite samples. Pyrrhotite is abundant in Western Australian sulfide mineral deposits which are commonly associated with gold bearing ores. It is generally believed that pyrrhotite has a detrimental effect on gold recovery from such ores, as it is commonly claimed to decompose in alkaline, aerated cyanide solutions to form iron cyanide complexes, thus consuming free cyanide, and to form sulfur/oxygen containing species such as sulfate, through oxidation of sulfur in pyrrhotite, which thus consumes oxygen. From information gleaned from the literature, claims about the high reactivity of pyrrhotite in cyanide appear to be based on early cyanidation studies performed on gold ore samples which have been poorly characterised, and contained impurities such as pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, which may have also contributed to the levels of species observed in solution [3-5]. In addition, the investigations do not take into account that iron atoms in the pyrrhotite structure may have been partially substituted by other atoms that influence the solubility of pyrrhotite in cyanide solution.

Hawaii is located approximately 2,500 miles from the mainland, but has basic needs for its thriving developing community. Cement is one of these needs Cement production in Hawaii is not without handicaps. The necessary raw materials are practically non-existent except for limestone. Even at that, the available limestone is marine in origin, coralline in nature and amorphous in characteristics - unlike calcite which is normally the calcium carbonate source for cement manufacture. There is no clay or shale for the argillaceous portion of cement raw mix. Hawaii being volcanic in origin is too young geologically for clays and shales to evolve and whatever there is, most likely is washed into the ocean.

Quick, inexpensive and accurate mineral-phase identification is of utmost importance to applied mineralogists. The precise relationship between the intensity of measured backscattered electrons in a scanning electron microscope and the average atomic number of the specimen is still argued. Nevertheless, much can be gained by using backscattered electron images to identify mineral phases in a specimen. An application was developed to facilitate this method and makes it a practical, inexpensive and valuable option in many mineralogical investigations.
