A coal mine study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed-air, foam spray system installed under a continuous miner boom and directed to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The study's objectives were to evaluate the foam, underboom sprays' effect on: • the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, and • the quartz concentration in the airborne, respirable dust. The foam generation and delivery system's engineering design is described in the paper, followed by descriptions of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the foam's effects on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the continuous miner cab, the face return and the intake. The data indicate reductions in the dust's quartz content, ranging from 19.7% to 64.6%, in eight of 11 comparisons of the foam vs. no foam cuts. In addition, airborne intake dust reductions were observed in eight of 11 comparisons.

Mining was the first economic activity carried out in Cuba, by the colonial conquerous, i.e. gold extraction from rivers and use of asphalt to calk their ships; however, due to different historic reasons only a limited development took place in this field during the colonial domination. During the republican period beginning early in this century, other interests lead to a larger scale exploitation of some known deposits. From the beginning of the century up to the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, not less than the following figures were extracted of some Cuban minerals: Refractory Chromium 3,300,000t Manganese 7,650,000 t Copper 9,000,000 t Iron 22,000,000 t Nickel 150,000 t (Ni oxide and sulphide These productions were practically directed to cover the demands of the U.S., industry and some-times these Cuban ores were almost the sole suppliers of the market.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have more or less become the preferred method of tunneling in various ground conditions and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or microprocessors are standard features on TBMs to monitor and record various sensory systems on the machine providing the possibility for machine automation and control. The data collected from these sensory systems and channeled through PLC is stored for real-time analysis or use by the operators. Based on typical construction specifications, part of the information collected in the process is shared with the project management team representing the owner. Machine data automatically acquired during TBM advance is typically processed by specialized software to offer the project team data visualization and evaluation options. Interfacing with Geographic Information System (GIS), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), 3-D geologic model, instrumentation data bases, and Document Management Systems (DMS) allows for developing Building Information Models (BIM) of the tunnel’s as-built condition. Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) processes such as Machine Learning (ML) have already been used for analysis of data, including performance prediction of hard rock TBMs, and exhibited the potential of big data analytics in improving the productivity of the operations. This paper outlines anticipated disruptive technological advances with implications on geotechnical exploration, TBM operation, face condition tracking, subsurface risk allocation, and claims management in the future.

This paper presents some techniques and data required to design large ball mills. The advent of larger size mills leads to consideration of the gearless drive as a practical solution to utilize large horsepowwers. The particular shell structure under consideration is subjected to thermal as well as magnetic loads. The magnitude of the inertia, magnetic and shell temperature characteristics have a very significant effect on the design and performance of the hydrodynamic pivoted shoe bearing. Particularly since these bearings have lower frictional resistance properties than hydrostatic trunnion tee rings. The structure of the mill is designed for long life. Parameters involved with the fatigue life of the structure are discussed together with some of the more important aspects of the design.

Communication about the energy problem has come at us in great profusion during the last couple of years--reports, speeches, editorials, advertisements--and events. Events such as the Arab embargo on oil exports which vividly demonstrated the world's dependence on oil, a finite and nonrenewable resource. And the three-fold increase in the price of oil which provides a constant reminder of the political and economic implications of dependence on foreign oil. A distinction among countries exists today which was almost inconsequential two years ago--the oil exporting nations and the oil consuming nations. The only rational way for the consuming countries to lessen the political and economic clout of the OPEC group is to reduce their dependence on oil. The United States is capable of playing a significant part in such a move for several reasons.

In this paper, the flotation rule and behaviors of kyanite-group polymerphous minerals were studied in modified Hallimond tube in detail. Furthermore, the energy change of collector/mineral systems before and after adsorption and the net charge densities of the atoms on the minerals surfaces were calculated by use of quantum chemistry. The flotabilities in minerals were successfully explained.

istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China's mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China's most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China's metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world's largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China's large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a post-mining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64°, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457-m wide and 3657-m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones in longwall gobs.

The justification for a "ligand- selective' approach to fine mineral beneficiation via flocculation is established initially. Special emphasis is placed upon the need to identify non-selective, interfering and complicating adsorption effects. Specific strategies directed towards the design and synthesis of complementary selective flocculants are detailed using a number of different polymers and chelating agents as examples. In this regard, the affinity of polymer-bound ligands for metallic cations, ligand concentration, possible modes of attachment, the application of spaced-out ligands and other considerations in the preparation of selective flocculants are highlighted.

"During the last ten years great strides have been made, on the Mesabi Range, in the practice of beneficiating low grade iron ore material. By .beneficiation is meant all methods of removing impurities, and raising the iron content to a point where it can be sold in open market, the principal impurities being silica and moisture. The • general processes to which low grade iron ores are amenable are as follows:1. Thermal(a) Drying ; removes hydroscopic or atmospheric moisture. .(b) Calcining; removes carbon dioxide from iron carbonate, molecular water from hydrated hematites, and atmospheric moisture.Roasting; removes sulphur, carbon dioxide, molecular water and atmospheric moisture.Agglomeration; primarily for the purpose of preparing finely divided material for blast furnace; briquetting and sintering.2. MechanicalScreen sizing; removes rock and sand.Classification; removes sand by means of currents of water of varying velocities.Log washing; removes fine sand.Jigging; removes larger particles of impurities than is possible by log washing. Certain types of jigs remove fine sand.Reciprocating tables; recover fine iron particles from sand discarded by above processes.Magnetic separation; applicable to the commercial separation of the magnetic oxide of iron from gangue material. For a Colorado mountain quarry, the Water Jet Channeling Method is far superior to Burning, Sawing, Drilling, or Shooting with Primer Cord, Water, or Black Powder. Throughout the life of our quarry, which was founded in 1947, we have used all the methods and turned to the Water Jet Channeler, which we invented and patented as our ideal way to remove dimension granite from our quarry. We jet the block on 4 sides and remove the block with plugs and feathers on the backside. The Water Jet uses approx 7.5 l/m (2 gpm) running at310,000 kPa (45,000 psi) to erode the crystals @ 1sm/h (10sf/h).The 0.533mm (.021”) nozzle oscillates back and forth to achieve an approx 5cm (2”) channel. Using the Jet, we do not lose corners or cause cracks in our red fine grain light class 5 granite.

Quartz crystals are the raw material from which are made the crystal units utilized in filters and oscillators so vital to the performance of all long distance communications systems. These devices act as the heart of equipment that permits a single telephone cable to carry hundreds of conversations simultaneously. Quartz crystals are of value in communications because of this piezoelectric nature, that is when an electric signal is applied to the quartz, there is a resulting mechanical motion and conversely, a mechanical stress results in an electrical output signal. A plate cut from a quartz crystal will oscillate at some specific frequency, which is determined by the physical dimension of the plate. During the early stages of telephony, all quartz plates were cut from natural quartz, which was imported mainly from Brazil. Since the source of this important raw material was based upon a foreign supply which is located at a great distance from the user and could be vulnerable in time of a national emergent, it became necessary to maintain a large inventory of this strategic material. Also due to the considerable cost of natural crystals of a size and quality suitable for Bell System use, an investigation was made by Bell Laboratories into the possibility of developing a substitute material. The effort was successful and led to a joint development program between Bell Laboratories and Western Electric. This program brought about the design of manufacturing facilities capable of producing large quantities of cultured quartz at Western's Merrimack Valley Works, No. Andover, Massachusetts.

The indirect method of drying coal fines is applied to filter cakes which ordinarily contain 22 to 30% moisture and are not readily transportable. The "Thermal Dryer", which operates on the mass transfer principle, has found wide use in coal preparation plants. The thermal dryer is penalized in operation by the necessity of adding coarse coal to the wet fines before entering the dryer body in order to produce a permeable bed, and thus enable hot gases to uniformly contact the wet mass. The ratio of coarse coal to fines varies from 2:1 to as much as 4:1, depending on the average particle size, moisture, and ash content of the fines.

Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards for mine workers. The nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources, including autocompression, equipment and heat from strata. This study investigates the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort of mine workers exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles were considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the workers’ thermal comfort. To investigate the impact of clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an eight-hour shift.

The semi-variogram, the basic tool of geostatistical estimation procedures, must itself be estimated from the available data. From a numerically simulated two dimensional deposit, with known variability expressed through its semi-variogram, the standard arithmetic mean estimator is used to calculate experimental semi-variograms. These are determined on a series of data sets obtained from the deposit with various sampling grids which cover different areas of the deposit and which have a wide range of available data. The orders of discrepancies between estimated and theoretical semi-variograms are determined in this idealized situation; and this provides a basis against which to assess experimental semi- variograms made on field data.

Mining project development, permitting, environmental regulatory and compliance issues in Uzbekistan and the CIS are every bit as complex as those in the western world. The vast array of environmental permitting, monitoring and reporting regulations for mine project development and operation in the CIS are based on existing Soviet environmental regulations and policies which have remained in place after these countries gained independence from the former Soviet Union. The approach to mine project permitting in the CIS differs from the western world. Similar pre- feasibility, baseline data collection, and environmental monitoring requirements allow the project proponent to coordinate preparation and submission of documentation to support project permitting for Uzbek regulatory requirements with environmental requirements imposed by financial institutions and western environmental compliance structures. Implementation of generally accepted western environmental best management controls and monitoring into mine design, construction, and operation will not, however, ensure automatic compliance with Uzbek environmental regulations. Uzbek environmental compliance requirements that differ from western requirements include: 1) development and maintenance of an environmental database constructed specifically to address annual, biannual and quarterly statistical reporting requirements for emissions of "environmental pollutants" from the facility into air, surface water, ground water and soil; 2) preparation and submittal of specific permits for water utilization, hazardous waste storage and disposal, landfill construction and operation, and stack emissions inventories; and 3) procurement of approvals from the Uzbekistan State Committee for Nature Protection (generally analogous to the US Environmental Protection Agency). This paper outlines and summarizes the regulatory requirements for mine site permitting and the procedures for environmental monitoring and reporting during mining operation in Uzbekistan and the CIS.

Had the blank on the Abstract form been sufficiently spacious a more appropriate title for this paper would be: Neogene Tectonism, Magmatic Activity and Hydrothermal Precious Metal Mineralization in Anatolian Turkey; an Analog with the Basin and Range Province of the Western U.S.? Like the alternative title no thing in Turkey is simple. Its history is long and convolute; its culture fascinating; its metallogeny diverse and its geology very complex. This paper will focus only on the geology of western' Anatolia and the precious metal potential of this third of Turkey. The argument is in the article but to save the reader time and suspense I'll put my conclusions up front- the potential is great and the possibilities exciting.

During slow-cooling crystallization of iron-making blast furnace slags, most rare-earth elements in the feed recrystallize as cerite-calcium while scandium and europium concentrate in a sheet-like "mineral". The mineralogy of this "mineral" is studied with one of the objectives being the extraction of the "mineral" from the slag for recovery of Sc and Eu. This "mineral" has been identified as one of the mica group minerals and can be named as rare-earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. The mineralogical characteristics of this "mineral" are investigated and discussed. This "mineral" can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation with dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecylammonium acetate and sodium oleate as a collector.

The ability to predict the dewatering performance of an industrial hydrocyclone from a laboratory-model hydrocyclone is of great importance. In this study, laboratory-scale hydrocyclone experiments were conducted using silica sand samples at 10 percent solid concentration for dewatering with Mozley hydrocyclones with diameters of 2 in. and 4 in. The objective is to predict the design parameters for an industrial dewatering cyclone to achieve higher solid concentration in the underflow. A model was developed based on the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model with the help of a commercial simulator for a hydrocyclone operating at 100 t/h and 20 percent solid concentration to achieve 80 percent solid recovery at 45 percent solid concentration in the underflow.
