More than 410,000 visitors from 171 countries helped bauma ’04 set new attendance records at the world’s largest construction machinery and mining technology show. The show, held in Munich, Germany March 29-April 4, marked bauma’s 50th anniversary. At the last bauma show in 2001, attendance was about 406,000 people from 157 countries. At bauma ’04, international attendance increased to 31 percent from 27 percent in 2001. In addition to record-setting attendance, bauma ’04also attracted 2,801 exhibitors, up from 2,341 in 2001. Exhibitors came from the United States, Europe, China, Japan and the Middle East. Exhibitor space topped 500,000m2 (5.4 million sq ft), another record. And, for the first time, there were more foreign exhibitors than German exhibitors, show organizers said.

Rehabilitation challenges were met nearly two months ahead of contract schedule for the Design-Build, Fast Track Scituate Aqueduct & Tunnel project in Cranston, Rhode Island. The aqueduct and tunnel were built in the 1920s and consisted of three sections—a 2.3 m diameter reinforced concrete section that extends approximately305 m before it transitions to a horseshoe-shaped 2.3 m wide by 2.1 m high cast-in-place concrete tunnel that continues for approximately 5.3 km until it transitions back to a 2.3 m circular section that extends approximately 1.9 km to the end of this project. Major repairs were required to assure sustained operation of this water supply tunnel.

As globalization continues, sustainability and social responsibility has become essential in foreign mining investment. However this global trend and the increasing acceptability toward the globalization process, viability and sustainability are not always achieved. Viability and sustainability of mineral projects is dependant on the social and political environment of the region where the mining venture is located and is based on the interaction between the mining entrepreneurs, national-local government representatives, communities, grass-roots groups and independent civil organizations. These are the organizations, which play the acting roles on the viability of mining projects and are the main source of socio-political risks for the project. Throughout the decision-making process to invest in a mineral project, socio-political risks are quantified using a set of measurable variables. Nevertheless, these risk measures should be dependent on specific industries. Two mineral projects, even in the same mining district, may have significantly different political risk profiles based on their own socio-political variables. This paper describes a methodology that takes into account local social and political variables in defining a project-specific’s political risk profile. This contrasts with more typical political risk measures that focus on the country’s overall risk profile. Mining operations must operate on a local scale necessitating the development measure that considers more local variables.

High-production methods like longwall mining with hydraulic powered supports are necessary to increase underground coal production in India. Longwall mining had a mixed success record for Indian geo-mining conditions. In this paper, an analysis is presented to optimally design an array of chain pillars in multi-seam longwall mining panels in the deepest coal mine in India. The study found that a chain pillar of 80-m width and 195-m length is necessary for long-term stability without any reinforcement. It was also observed that an optimum chain pillar can be designed by providing suitable side reinforcement (side bolting) which will reduce the chain pillar dimensions to 55-m width and 160-m length. Optimum design of chain pillars will reduce the coal locked up in these chain pillars by ~ 77%. This will also reduce the gestation period of longwall mining panel development. This paper also evaluates the maximum tensile subsidence strain induced at the surface and finds that the values are within the safe working limit of 3 mm/m. Thus, this paper finds direct application in the design of future multi-seam retreating longwall mining panels in Indian geo-mining conditions.

The paper describes a variety of existing techniques and equipment which when combined together permit faster and cheaper drilling of shafts in soft to medium strength formations. Drilling fluid circulation, methods of hole stabilisation and bit design, including the advantages of flat bottomed and conical bits, shrouds and skirts, tungsten carbide, long tooth and disc cutters are considered. The principles of rock chip transportation and bottom hole cleaning are described together with a new and very efficient fluid circulation system which was invented by the author.

The removal of gangue minerals from three different graphite ores (Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere) from Turkey by acid leaching was studied. Acid leaching experiments were applied to the flotation bulk concentrates, which were obtained in determined optimum conditions after preliminary flotation tests. The effects of acid type, acid concentration, leaching temperature and leaching time on the dissolution of gangue minerals were studied. The most suitable leaching conditions were determined to be 20% HCl + 4% HF for acid type and concentration, 85 ºC for leaching temperature and 4 hours for leaching time. After removing the gangue minerals at these optimum conditions, the total carbon contents of the samples from Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere increased from 23.51% to 40.07%, from 37.93 to 60.47% and from 42.28 to 59.47%, respectively.

The Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in Macon County, Missouri, was constructed between 1990 and 1991 by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Land Reclamation Program for the purpose of treating acid mine drainage (AMD). The principal source of the AMD is from an underground mine that operated during the 1920's through 1950's, which was partially exposed during surface mining in the 1960’s. Limestone bedding of an AMD collection system provided alkalinity similar to an anoxic limestone drain (ALD). Because the original aerobic wetland failed when a critical dilution water supply became unavailable, the total acidity of the AMD overwhelmed the limited neutralization ability of the aerobic wetland. The aquatic vegetation deteriorated and treatment became ineffective. The Missouri Land Reclamation Program with the assistance of the Office of Surface Mining, Mid-Continent Regional Coordinating Center rehabilitated the Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in 2001, incorporating newer technologies to improve the performance. The new system, Old Bevier II treatment facility, consists of a 2-stage vertical flow pond (VFP) with associated oxidation cells and aerobic wetlands. This paper discusses the performance of this passive AMD treatment system, updating an earlier report. The new treatment system has operated with nearly continuous net alkaline discharge and a high iron removal rate. Treatment improves during warm months when emergent vegetation is fully established and biologic activity is greater. Reduction in system efficiency is evident during winter months.

In November 1999, CCI's Empire Iron Mining Partnership and MinnovEX Technologies Inc. developed an expert system for advanced control of their Empire IV Grinding Section. Empire IV is comprised of three autogenous Primary Mills and six autogenous Pebble Mills, with a single Pebble Crusher and high pressure Roll Press. The challenges of controlling and optimizing three distinct grinding lines that are inter-woven by a pebble crushing circuit were met with innovative and unique solutions. This paper will detail the approach employed at Empire and will focus on the aspects that make this application unique.

The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail for analysis causes inefficient operation and hence sub-optimal energy and water use. It is difficult to analyze the performance of mining and metallurgical processes without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. To take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. This paper presents an infrastructure with advanced tools that sift through available data, identify and eliminate gross errors, and transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. Collaboration is a key component of improving efficiency of energy and water use, and the evolution of Web technology enables collaboration and troubleshooting of plant information to more quickly act on issues to reduce wasteful operation. Research studies have shown that the flow within feedwells displays a vortical structure and high velocities at the locations where standard tangential inlets force its way into the feedwell swirling flow, producing high local shear rates and flow non-uniformities. These hydraulic deficiencies can be attributed to the discrete feeding through a few entrances, usually one or no more than a few tangential feedpipes, which practically project jets into the vortex within the feedwell. The main consequences are unequal flocculation with aggregates subjected to different amounts of shear and a non-uniform discharge from the feedwell. This paper presents results on the application of CFD and small-scale models to develop a new design that overcomes these problems by using an involute shaped inlet that converges around the feedwell. The result is a new feedwell with enhanced hydraulics that perfectly couples with the FLSmidth E-Duc® Feed Dilution system by protecting the flocculated aggregates that have been carefully produced upstream, and that favors uniform sedimentation conditions within the thickener thanks to a uniform discharge, while maintaining a practical and trouble-free geometry with excellent turndown.

Industrial minerals have always enjoyed an important share in the technological growth of any country in the world. Today, extraction and trading of industrial minerals has expanded, but is also subject to stricter environmental guidelines. This paper presents the current status as well as the growth potential in the exploitation of industrial minerals in the countries of the south eastern European region, i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, F.Y.R.O.M., Greece, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia and Turkey. More specifically, annual production figures per country are presented for1992-1998. These figures are compared to each other and, where applicable, to world production figures. Trading of industrial minerals from these countries to Europe and the world and its effect to the local economies is also evaluated were such data is available.

Under an extremely aggressive schedule, final design of 13.5 km (8.4 miles) miles of 8.2 m (27 ft) diameter deep rock tunnel, 322 ML/day (85 million gallons / day)submersible pumping station and associated facilities were accomplished ahead of a federal court mandated consent decree schedule. Challenges overcome by the project team in enabling timely completion of the construction documents will be presented. Discussion includes evolution of final design, consideration of future O&M requirements, and risks identified for construction and operations, together with measures to manage and proactively prepare for such risks.

The abstract of the paper discusses the challenge of quantifying iron content in a coal deposit in Kazakhstan. The iron dataset is limited, coming from only three drill holes and some stope samples, while a large amount of geological information is available from legacy drill hole data. The paper proposes a workflow using multiple-point geostatistics to model geological domains and two-point geostatistics to model iron content within these domains. The results show that the direct sampling (DeeSse) algorithm effectively reproduces the complex seam layers, and sequential Gaussian simulation models the iron within each domain.

The purpose of this paper is to provide general information about the bioaccessibility of metals and specific information about the use of bioaccessibility in risk assessments (human health risk assessments [HHRA] or ecological risk assessments [ERA]) and a list of sites where regulatory agencies have approved the use of bioaccessibility data in risk assessment. The memorandum also cites current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidance as well as state specific guidance where applicable. BRIEF HISTORY OF METAL BIOACCESSIBILITY TESTING AND METHODS The bioaccessible fraction of a constituent is that fraction that dissolves or desorbs from its matrix (e.g., soil) in the gastrointestinal tract and is available for absorption (USEPA 2007a; ITRC 2011; ITRC 2017). This is different from the bioavailable fraction, which is the percentage of the amount of an element that an organism is exposed to that is absorbed by that organism during a given time under defined conditions (USEPA 2007a). The bioaccessibility factor is the percentage of a metal that is potentially available for absorption and, therefore, is a conservative estimate of the bioavailable fraction since all that is available for absorption may not ultimately be absorbed into the organism’s system. Currently, there are two main techniques for estimating bioavailability of metals within a medium: in vivo animal studies (time-consuming and often cost-prohibitive), and in vitro tests that simulate human, or animal digestion in a laboratory setting. In vitro and in vivo test methods and protocols have been extensively evaluated by numerous researchers (Ruby et al. 1996; Rodriguez and Basta 1999; Sips et al. 1998; Sips et al. 2001; Molly et al 1993; Oomen et al 2002; Kelley et al. 2002; Oomen et al. 2003; Furman et al. 2006; Drexler and Brattin 2007; Basta et al. 2007; Wragg et al. 2009; Wragg et al. 2011; Chaney et al. 2011; Bradham et al. 2015; Bradham et al. 2018). The most recent scientific literature demonstrates that protocols used to estimate the bioavailability of metals to mammals also predict bioavailability of metals to birds as well (Beyer et al., 2016).

The Buick mine, located 195 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of St. Louis in the Viburnum Trend, is owned and operated by Homestake Mining Company. The mine produces lead and zinc ore from a room and pillar mining method at a depth of approximately 335 m (1 100 ft). The Buick orebody typically averages 60 to 120 m (200 to 400 ft) in width with ore thicknesses ranging from 2.4 to 36.6 m (8 to 120 ft). The mine is divided in two; the halves are referred to as the North mine and South mine orebodies. The North mine orebody contains the higher grade ore; however, the developed reserves for the South mine orebody comprise about 60 percent of the total developed reserves for the Buick property. Existing pillars represent one-third of the total developed reserves.

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. The Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shields designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., are recently more enthusiastically accepted by tunnel boring specialists. This company having built 1,000 tunnel shields utilizes its vast experience to resolve the problem to excavate through big boulders scattered in rather soft alluvial soil. Several types of EPB shields which can cope with large size boulders are described. Such shields are equipped with both drag bits and rolling disc cutters on the cutterheads. Previously removal of boulders has presented safety problems for workers while in the muck chamber, or venturing in front of the shield. This report describes the problem and how the equipment was modified to deal with the problem.

The phenomena of dripping into cavities (e.g. tunnels and drifts) within an unsaturated fractured porous medium under ventilated conditions is studied to improve estimates of dripping rates, drop sizes, and chemical composition of droplets that could affect the integrity of high-level nuclear waste packages placed in drifts. The sensitivity of dripping rates and water chemistry to ventilation is analyzed at various flow rates using analytical expressions linking flow on fracture surfaces to drop formation and evaporation. The model was tested using laboratory experiments involving machined aluminum slabs designed to represent a simplified morphology of a fracture face intersecting a cavity and using natural fracture surfaces from a welded tuff. Comparison with ten years of data on dripping in natural caves showed good agreement with model predictions. In particular, for low dripping rates, evaporation due to ventilation leads to larger drop sizes and alters drop chemistry by increasing the concentration of solutes in the drop relative to that in the water flowing on the fracture face.

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. "The Zenith-Victoria /1/ and Jubileynoye /2/ hydrothermal fields have symmetrical structural position on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (Fig. 1). In order to compare the evolution of hydrothermal systems, we conducted mineralogical and geochemical studies of SMS from both sites.Radiochemical and geochemical investigations of massive sulfides of the Zenith-Victoria field distinguishes three major stages of evolution: initial, interim and final represented by Fe-S, Cu-Fe and Zn-Fe types of SMS respectively /3/. In this talk, we describe the results of geochemical analysis of massive sulfides from the Zenith-Victoria field. Geochemical varieties of SMS are considered to be indicators of the evolutionary stages of the hydrothermal system."
