INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust is an animal carcinogen, although evidence of the carcinogenicity in humans is "limited". (World Health Org. , 1989) Of the eight cohort studies in the 19808, five found an increased risk for lung cancer among workers who may have been exposed to diesel exhaust (RR from 1.3-1.5, SMR from 101-132). (Howe, et al., 1983) Only two studies accounted for smoking indirectly. Of the ten case-control studies in the 1980's, eight reported increased risk of lung cancer among those populations purportedly exposed to diesel exhaust. (Benhamou, et al. , 1988) All but one of these adjusted for smoking and other occupational exposures. The odds ratios ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. In two of these studies, miners experienced a two to three fold risk. (Benhamou, et al., 1988) Bladder cancer has also been linked to diesel exhaust in cohort and case-control studies. Excesses of approximately 50% were observed among truck drivers in studies by NCI. (Hoar, et al., 1985) In the National Bladder Cancer Study, risks for truck drivers rose with duration of employment. A study by NIOSH in Ohio also found an excess of bladder cancer among truck drivers, particularly among those with 20 or more years of employment. (Steenland, et al, 1987) Despite the large number of studies in which the relation between diesel exhaust exposure and lung cancer has been examined, exposure to diesel exhaust has been quantitatively estimated only in the studies of railroad workers and truck drivers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) The excess lung cancer risk experienced by workers in these two occupational groups was modest, ranging from 40 to 90% for those with long-term employment. However, diesel exhaust exposure among railroad workers and truck drivers is lower than that seen among miners. Several markers of diesel exhaust have been utilized in these studies. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of particulates, vapors and gases. One group of these gases, the nitrogen oxides, react with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, forming mutagenic and possible carcinogenic nitrated derivatives. (World Health Organization, 1989) For this reason, and because it is easy to measure and analyze, NO, was frequently used as a marker of diesel exhaust exposure. As part of the Garshick (Garshick, et al., 1988) study of railroad workers, Woskie measured NO, exposures of 477 railroad workers. Simulation has established itself as an accepted tool for the design and optimization of complex minerals processing plants. This paper addresses the use of simulation as a tool for the design and optimization of carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants. The complex, interactive nature of CIP/CIL plants makes detailed experimentation an expensive and time consuming approach to CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization. This paper discusses a simulation-based software tool that can make the process of CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization much more cost effective. Many of the issues and problems pertaining to the use of simulation for CIP/CIL design and operation are generic. Thus, this paper also attempts to highlight generic issues that must be solved before simulation will become a more widely used design and optimization tool. Requirements for the application of simulation for CIP/CIL plant design and optimization are highlighted. Similar problems and issues can be identified for most mineral processing plants.

This paper reviews the historical background leading to the development of the project. It gives a description of the exploration program and resulting geological and ore reserve information together with plans for mining. A discussion is included of the three processes investigated for the project: 1. Rotary Hearth and Magnetic Concentration 2. Shaft Furnace and Electric Furnace 3. Rotary Kiln and Electric Furnace Results of pilot plant campaigns conducted at Fiskaa, Norway, and Riddle, Oregon, on the process chosen for the production of ferronickel are presented. The paper continues with a review of the considerations involved in selection of commercial plant equipment and concludes with comments on the current status of the project.

Selective adsorption and surface modification of minerals by surfactants is the primary step in the process of separating certain minerals with similar physical and chemical characteristics in the flotation process. In this study, microorgan- isms are used as surface modifiers for francolite and dolomite. Results of adsorption experiments with francolite and dolomite show that the microbes selectively adsorb to one of the minerals under specific operating conditions. In preliminary flotation experiments, it is found that the microorganisms enhance or depress flotation of the minerals leading to an increase in the efficiency of separation between the francolite and dolomite. The conditions leading to selective adsorption (surface modification) and subsequently to possible efficient separation of these two minerals are discussed in this paper.

One of the most commonly employed set of calculations in mill design and research is the material balance, known in wet beneficiation plants, as an Ore and Water Balance. For mill designers, the balance is one of the principal requirements in determining the proper size of launders, pipelines, process equipment, etc. In process development, one of the major goals is the establishment of an optimum balance. The usual procedure for calculating a material balance involves a manual technique utilizing reference tables, pre -obtained data, and a slide rule or desk calculator. With these, the engineer must perform a series of calculations which are repetitious in nature and time consuming. Figure I is the flowsheet of the grinding and flotation circuits for a copper concentrator. The initial ore and water balance was calculated manually and required approximately 24 manhours. Later, a number of changes were made in the balance, each of which required an average of 8 manhours.

Introduction The reclamation of mine/mill tailings areas is undertaken for a variety of objectives including safety, appearance, economical use of lands and forests and long term storage of a future resource. The establishing of criteria for these objectives at any site is a shared task of the government and mining company. Our attention in this paper is directed to uranium mine/ mill tailings as they are handled in the Canadian industry and in the unique Canadian climate. We focus our attention on the state of the art. Uranium is a ubiquitous mineral forming an average of 4 g per tonne of the Earth's crust. Ores are mined at about 500 g per tonne so that the residual content of uranium in tailings is comparable to average background levels. However, as in most mine/mill operations, the ore contains other minerals that become readily mobile after milling operations. Thus the main objective of tailings impoundment is the stability both physically and chemically of the mobile materials. Since the requirements for the operation and construction of tailings areas in Canada have changed considerably over the past decade, there exists a great many mine/mill tailings areas which while considered adequate in their day, would not meet modern criteria. However, most of these installations pose no concern or hazard to the public. The proximity of mine/mill development to inhabited land areas has necessitated more stringent modes of tailings operations and provisions for tailings site reclamation. The more important of these have been: 1) the prevention of dyke failure, with large liquid-solid outflows onto adjoining lands, and 2) the prevention of seepage from the tails of pollutants such as chlorides, sulphides, heavy metals and radionuclides. Uranium mill tailings are discharged as a slurry from the concentrator after the removal of generally only about 1000 g, or less, per tonne of uranium from the as-mined ore. As a consequence, a great volume of low level activity waste is generated. Knowledge of local coal mine roof geology is critical to the design of a safe and suitable mine structure. An automated drill control and data collection system has been designed for a J.H. Fletcher twin-head roof bolter. Drilling parameters collected during the drilling process can be used to interpret geologic features intercepted in the mine roof. The drill and data collection system have been tested in both laboratory and underground settings. Visualization of certain drilling data has shown good correlation with geology drilled. A quantitative prediction model was developed using drilling parameters examined with data visualization. The quantitative model was tested using laboratory drilling data.

Carajás is one of the largest open pit mines in the world. The mine is comprised by a haul road network more than 100 km long, where the need for good roads is paramount and determining of the truck performances. This work integrates, regarding the ultimate pit design, an approach to consider an economic value to an originally unfit material, assuming it has the appropriate characteristics for haul road construction, which sometimes lies over economic iron ore. This measure demonstrated an improvement in the utilization of resources and guarantee the necessary material to the haul road design and Mining Pads maintenance.

Florida phosphates ore typically processed by reverse flotation with an intermediate acid-scrubbing step. A single-reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amines as the collector, would eliminate the intermediate scrubbing step plus an additional flotation step. This would not only simplify the process flowsheet but would also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single-reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector is examined in this study. Introduction The beneficiation scheme now used for Florida phosphates involves the following three steps (Smith, 1976: Lawyer et al.. 1978, 1984: Moudgil et al, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1987): •rougher flotation of fluorapatitc particles using a fatty acid-fuel oil mixture as the collector. •scrubbing of fatty acid, and •cleaner flotation of silica particles using amine collector. Several attempts have been made to simplify the process flowsheet by floating either apatite or silica (not both, as is the current practice). However, single-reagent flotation schemes have had limitations in meting the concentrate-grade requirements of the phosphoric acid plants. In this study, an attempt was made to use a minimal amount of the fatty acid-fuel oil collector to obtain an acceptable grade (rougher) concentrate. Invariably, the recovery in such cases is expected to be lower than in the conventional rougher-flotation step. Therefore, scavenger flotation of tailings with additional fatty-acid collector was conducted to improve the phosphate recoveries.

Underground sites have great potential for industrial plants, for warehouses, and for other purposes where above-surface locations are now employed. Subsurface locations have generally been over- looked by industrial planners even though they may offer many features of superiority over the conventional sites. There are many opportunities for industries or warehouses to go underground. New space can be excavated expressly for this purpose or openings in existing mines may be converted to useful space. Another possibility is the pre-planned mine-industrial site, in which a mineral product is mined and marketed as a commercial venture while utilizing a mining plan which will permit rapid conversion of the openings created into active industrial areas while mining continues in the adjacent ground. An underground plant located in chambers created by excavating space in solid rock has many advantages, including low construction costs, low heating-cooling costs, freedom from storm damage or other surface weather conditions, absence of traffic noise and vibration, fireproof construction, low insurance costs, excellent working conditions, easily controlled temperature and humidity, almost unlimited bearing capacity of floors, low maintenance costs, no effect upon surface.

The purpose of wrapping ball mills with thermal/acoustic blankets is twofold: 1) to maintain the desired temperature inside the mill, and 2) to reduce the sound emanating from the mill. This field case study focuses solely on the latter, evaluating and documenting the sound level reduction attributed to the installation of the blankets on ball mills and its potential to reduce the noise dose experienced by the process attendant. One of the three ball mills had already been treated (baseline) before the evaluation started. However, treating the remaining two mills still proved to be very effective, further reducing ball mill noise in the near field by as much as 10.0 dBA and producing far field noise reductions of 3.0 dBA or greater, extending as far as 35 feet from the mills and to the floor above. The model developed from the survey data shows that a process attendant spending a substantial portion of a shift in the mill building will experience a significant reduction in overall noise dose.

Pyrophyllite is a naturally occurring hydrous aluminum silicate with the molecular formula SiO,,AI,,(OH), or, as more commonly expressed, the oxide formula A120,~4Si02~H20. Pyrophyllite is rarely found in deposits as the pure mineral and is often intimately associated with quartz, sericite, kaolinite, and diaspore. These associated minerals, to a large degree, help determine the most appropriate commercial application for a given pyrophyllite ore. Structural similarities plus the generally soft platy nature of pyrophyllite has in the past caused it to be included with talc in applications and production data. The Minerals Yearbook, published annually by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), still reports on talc and pyrophyllite together, although admitting that they do not share the same uses. Pyrophyllite has also at times been considered a clay mineral because of its structure and chemistry. The refractory properties of pyrophyllite have been known for nearly 200 years, but it has only been in the past 60 to 70 years that a variety of applications have been developed to exploit the unique characteristics of this mineral. Worldwide, pyrophyllite is a component of refractories, whiteware, foundry mold dressings, pesticides, paint, plastics, rubber, cement, fiberglass, and soap. Historical Overview The most salient refractory features of pyrophyllite are its low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, low moisture expansion, and good resistance to corrosion by molten metals and basic slags. One of the first recorded uses of this mineral was as firebrick in Japan in the early 1800s. This followed its discovery in 1797 on Mount Omotoyama at the site of the present Mitsuishi mine. In addition to firebrick, sawn blocks of ore were used for carvings and in the manufacture of slate pencils and signature seals. The Mitsuishi mine is still one of Japan's largest. By the mid-1800s, refractories were being made in Japan from roseki (a pyrophyllite-bearing ore) for the construction of metal melting furnaces. The mineral did not get its name until 1829 when R. Herman, testing a sample of supposed talc from the gold-quartz veins at the Berezovo deposit in the Urals, showed that it was actually an aluminum silicate and designated it pyrophyllite. This name was derived from the Greek pur for fue and phullon for leaf, in allusion to the effect of heat in causing separation of the laminae in foliated varieties (Mellor, 1927). The exact date of the discovery of pyrophyllite in the United States is uncertain, but it is believed that the talc and soapstone deposits noted in an 1827 report on the geology of the slate belt of North Carolina were actually pyrophyllite occurrences (Olmstead, 1827). Pyrophyllite was first used in North Carolina on a local basis in the early 1800s. Blocks were sawn and cut for use as stove linings, mantels, chimneys, fireplaces, and gravestones. This was the material of choice because it did not shrink when heated, but cut easily and hardened as it weathered. Pyrophyllite crayons were sold commercially by local gold miners for steel marking and as tailor's chalk from about 1800 until 1922. It was during this period that pyrophyllite was discovered near the town of Hemp (later renamed Robbins), NC. The large quantity of scrap resulting from the sawing of crayons at this deposit prompted the construction in 1921 of a grinding plant. The ore scrap was ground to fine granules and sold to asphalt producers to prevent shingles from sticking together. By the mid-1930s, milled pyrophyllite from North Carolina was also being successfully utilized by the ceramics industry in whiteware for its low cost and ability to shorten firing time. Also during the 1930s, pyrophyllite was first used in kilncar furniture in the United States. Canada was another early entrant in the pyrophyllite business. Mining at the Foxtrap deposit on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland began in 1904, with ore shipped to the United States. Production from this deposit was mostly sporadic in the ensuing years until 1956 when mining began for shipment and captive use in US tile manufacture. This production has remained continuous and still essentially captive to the present. The Foxtrap deposit is currently the sole commercial source of pyrophyllite in Canada.

The length of Alaska's coastline, combined with the presence of a significant number of fjords, encourages consideration of marine disposal of mine tailings. However, the decision-making process is complex because various factors govern the viability of the submarine tailings disposal (STD) option. An expert system, called the Submarine Tailings Disposal Expert System (STADES), was developed to help mining project planners explore the feasibility of STD. A review of the existing literature, supplemented by engineering recommendations, on the various aspects of the marine disposal of tailings formed the knowledge base for the expert system. The shell used to develop the expert system was LEVELS.

The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress (IMVC) was held May 17-22,1997, in Pittsburgh, PA. This marked the second time that the IMVC was held in the United States. The first congress, organized in 1975 by the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa, was held in Johannesburg. Since then, the meetings have been held every four or five years, with the 1979 meeting being held in Reno, NV. This was followed by Harrogot, England, in 1984; Brisbane, Australia, in 1988; and Johannesburg, South Africa, again in 1992. The IMVC provides an international forum in the field of mine ventilation for the purpose of sharing technology and experience. The meetings are attended by ventilation engineers, academics, consultants, government employees and vendors interested in mine ventilation. As was evident from this meeting, significant progress has been made in the field of mine ventilation. However, disasters continue to occur around the world and long-term health problems continue to affect workers. So there is a need for further improvements in ventilation technology. The highlight of the conference was the technical sessions in which more than 80 papers were presented by authors from more than 20 countries. In addition to the technical sessions, the conference featured field trips to a number of mine properties throughout the United States. Five short courses were offered on topics ranging from respirable-dust control to mine fires and explosions. The conference also featured a trade show. It exhibited the latest advances in ventilation equipment, computer application software, consulting and engineering services, and health and safety equipment.

INTRODUCTION The literature on project management considerations and techniques for large rail rapid transit projects in mid-1979 was fairly large and getting larger. UMTA was establishing special organizational elements to deal with the subject as it related to those properties requesting capital assistance, and comprehensive project management plans were being requested from those properties as an early step to build confidence in UMTA that the particular project could be planned, designed, and executed efficiently and effectively, thereby using critically short capital assistance funds to best advantage. In the late 60's and early 70's, the choices of models for heavy rail construction would have been quite limited.., and perhaps much simpler than was the case in 1979. One of the writers was with an agency in 1979 in the process of finalizing its organization for project implementation after several years of study and had the opportunity to review the experiences of others at length, presumably to build on the success and to try to avoid the pitfalls and failures. The properties that were surveyed all reported more or less success stories. One could only conclude that there are many ways to organize for a major transit (construction) project and that there is a great variety of viable management structures, but it seemed that chances for success were best where the executing property had prepared a comprehensive project management plan, then resolved to follow it. Perhaps more important, a commitment or prior approval had been sought from UMTA as to the validity of the project management plan, and the property was allowed to proceed without detailed prior UMTA review or approval of all specific intermediate steps. Most important, however, an early overall UMTA funding commitment had been obtained that permitted some reasonable expectation of the rate of funding, perhaps by commitment

"Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) are located within 305-m (1000-ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for mobile tent-type RAs. The results of these studies show that most of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation (51%) and conduction (31%). Three mine width/height configurations and three mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied less than 1°C (1.8°F) for the three mine width/height configurations and less than 2°C (3.6°F) for the three mine strata compositions. INTRODUCTION Following a mine disaster, workers will try to escape the mine. If their escape is futile, they can take shelter in a refuge alternative (RA). In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated RAs in mines to ensure that a safe and livable shelter is provided for a minimum of 96 hours, and that the apparent temperature (AT) does not exceed 35°C (95°F) inside the RA [1]. An ongoing concern with RAs is the potential to exceed this limit. The temperature rise inside an RA is due to the metabolic heat released by the occupants as well as heat released by the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type training unit RA in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. The 10-person capacity for the tested RA is based on 1.4 m2 (15 ft2) of floor space per miner. NIOSH-developed simulated miners, which are heat input devices that generate both sensible and latent heat, were used to represent the metabolic heat generation of an average miner (117 W) for testing in the SRCM. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. To further research temperature rise inside an RA, ThermoAnalytics, Inc. (TAI) was contracted by NIOSH to perform thermal simulations of the tested 10-person mobile tent-type RA. TAI developed a thermal model of the SRCM using RadTherm software, which incorporates a human thermal model (HTM) to represent the equivalent metabolic heat loss of a miner within the RA’s enclosed environment. The thermal model was previously validated by comparing simulation results with test results [3]. During a mine disaster in which miners would have to take shelter in an RA, mine ventilation may not be available. As such, mine ventilation was off for both the testing in the SRCM as well as in the simulations. This paper discusses the heat loss mechanisms and the effects of mine strata composition and mine width and height associated with a ten-person tent-type RA."

Slurry technology developed for the marine transport of mineral commodities has been increasingly applied to on-shore slurry transport systems. Reclaim of mineral concentrates, sand tailings for mine backfill and various industrial minerals from storage tanks or ponds normally require a slurry of high density at constant flow rates to improve process performance and to reduce handling costs. An efficient system must accomplish this at minimum capital costs with maximum reliability. Continuing improvements in equipment design to improve repulping efficiency and their application are discussed.
