This study characterizes the hydrogeochemistry of groundwaters near opalite-hosted epithermal hot-spring type mercury deposits in the Ivanhoe mining district, Elko County, Nevada. Local groundwaters generally range from Ca-HCO3 to Ca-Mg-Na-SO4 type waters with background mercury concentrations ranging from 0.014 to 0.32 ug/l. Leaching experiments conducted on mineralized rocks, using typical water chemistries to represent local groundwaters, yield total mercury concentrations ranging from 6.3 ug/l to 27.4 ug/l after one year of reaction. Geochemical modeling indicates dissolved mercury is dominated by HgO(,) and that precipitation of quicksilver controls mercury concentrations to an upper limit of 63 ug/l.

This paper examines the feasibility of combining network modeling and computational fluid dynamics for modeling of underground mine ventilation systems. Both simulation methods have specific advantages and disadvantages for analysis of mine systems. Network modeling is widely utilized by many operations and allows for assessment of current systems and simulation for planning purposes. Alternatively, CFD has been utilized only marginally by operations and is typically a research tool, requiring considerable computational power, complex models, and careful analysis and calibration of results. Network modeling allows for a holistic approach to the ventilation system, giving quantity, velocity and pressure in every branch, but CFD modeling can resolve the flow regime in 2-D or 3-D, which is idea when examination of an area on a more detailed basis is useful, such as dust and gas control. Integration of the two can allow for more flexible systems analysis. The feasibility of integration, along with application to limited underground mine data are examined.

In the May, 1969 issue of Mining Engineering the Editorial Director, John V. Beall, described the Japanese Onahama Copper Smelter and Refinery as follows: "On the shore of the Pacific, 120 miles north of Tokyo, is the world's most modern copper smelter and refinery.? One of the improvements that has been made at the Onahama Refinery is the quality of the electrolyte in the copper refinery electrolytic cells. This has been accomplished by reducing the concentration of slimes in the cells between the electrodes. In a December 19, 1966 review in Chemical Engineering magazine reference was made to some tests in Sweden as follows: ?However, at 1,000 amps/sq.M., satisfactory cathodes could be prepared, provided electrolyte flow past the anode and cathode was at least 3 to 4 meters per minute, and the slime content was not allowed to exceed 20 to 30 mg. per liter. By dropping the current to 500 amps with the same electrolyte velocity, the slime content could grow to 50 mg. per liter (50 ppm) without causing occlusion at the cathode." From this data it appears that the production capacity of copper refining electrolytic cells can be significantly increased. In order to do this the concentration of suspended contaminating slimes in the electrolyte solution is reduced by filtration. The electrolyte in-between the active electrodes must be purged with higher velocities to maintain a high concentration of the desirable copper ion in the liquid film adjacent to the cathode and the sulfate ion in the liquid film at the anode. This higher velocity also carries away from the cathode the undesirable impurities released from the anode as they are released into the electrolyte as filterable solids.

The economic application of real time computer control can be broken down into 2 broad areas of concern. The first would be in gaining the most efficient utilization of energy. The second would be in improved product quality. This paper will be primarly concerned with the first area of efficient energy utilization as that area has the greatest effect on costs and thus net profits. Most process control strategy attempt to achieve the greatest comminution with the least amount of energy thus maximizing efficiency. A more direct approach to energy control involves a total mine and mill energy management system. In most cases these systems have an ability to achieve a very short payback period with the greatest return on investment.

The estimation of TBM utilization rate can be problematic due to the uncertainty involved in the tunneling system reaction to various geology along the tunnel. Moreover, the impact of operational and management issues on TBM performance is unsettled. This includes the occurrence and duration of downtimes and the uniqueness of projects relative to the geology, machine type, backup system, site setup, crew experience, and operational restrictions imposed on the project by localities. The CSM2020 is a model based on discrete event simulation that predicts machine utilization for single or double shield TBM. This model was developed by the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) team, using the database of tunneling activities which was compiled based on field observation and measurements in pertinent projects. In the current study, CSM2020 was modified to simulate the workflow of slurry TBMs. The operating principle of slurry shield TBMs is different than open-mode TBMs. The model was verified by comparing results with a recently completed project in the United States. As a result, the model offers reliable utilization rate estimation in different types of TBM by implementing appropriate workflow.

The economics of transporting minerals by sea in less than full cargo lots encompasses an analysis of production costs, sale and inventory calculations and a careful comparison of ocean freight costs all of which when pieced together will usually definitively indicate which of the ocean freight alternatives is the correct one for the economic factors involved. To illustrate: Let us assume that a production to be marketed yields 60,000 metric tons of copper concentrates over a twelve month period. Shipment is geographically viable through Vancouver, B.C. The production has been sold to a Japanese Smelter and the mine produces at a rate of 5,000 metric tons of concentrates per month. The copper has been sold CIF FO. The Seller has carefully investigated ocean freight rates Vancouver, B.C./Hibi, Japan and finds that he could obtain a twelve month freight contract at $15.00 per metric ton FIGS based on a loading/discharging speed of 4000/ 2000 metric tons per WWDSHEX (weather working day, Sundays and Holidays excluded) this freight rate being predicated on shipping in lots of minimum. 15,000 tons. A further freight investigation reveals that to ship at the same terms and conditions but in lots of 5,000 tons, and shipping each month (in accordance with the mine's actual production) would cost $20.00 per metric ton FIOS. The calculation that is now made is whether it is more desireable to pay a higher ocean freight by shipping in 5,000 ton lots or to pay the lower freight where here the ocean freight involves a difference of some $300,000.00.

Since the failure of a major coal refuse disposal embankment and impoundment in the Buffalo Creek watershed near Man, West Virginia in early 1972, there have been extensive changes in the design and construction requirements for coal refuse disposal facilities located throughout the United States. The primary emphasis has been on improving the safety of these facilities, particularly for impoundments which are capable of storing millions of gallons of process water and storm runoff. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) of the U.S. Department of Labor (formerly the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, U.S. Department of interior) has been the lead federal agency in promulgating regulations pertaining to coal waste disposal. In 1974 and 1975, studies were undertaken by our firm under contract to the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration to prepare a comprehensive engineering and design manual to be used by operators and engineers in the planning and design of coal refuse disposal facilities with the intent ion of avoiding any more Buffalo Creek failures. The resultant 800-page document addresses major subjects such as safety, environmental controls, and cost. Specific topics include characterization of coal refuse, classification of disposal facilities, project planning, geotechnical investigations, testing and design requirements, hydraulic and hydrologic design, environmental factors, operations, and monitoring, instrumentation, and maintenance.

An open pit production planning method for stage mining is presented in this paper. The method brings solutions to the four most important parameters in stage mining : 1) the number of stages, 2) the size and geometry of each stage pit, 3) the mining sequence of the benches in the stage pits, and 4) the time of transition from one stage to the next. The method can also simultaneously optimize the ultimate pit, mine life, and production rate in each stage.

Grefco Inc. exploration has defined a large embayment of commercial grade freshwater diatomite in Shasta County. Exploitation of this massive deposit could substantially increase California's diatomite production.

Golder Moffitt and Associates (GMA)", were commissioned to reassess a large metallic low grade orebody. One of the aims of the study was to estimate recoverable reserves. Recoverable reserves are here defined as ore reserves for a specific mining block size. The mining block is that block on which the decision that the material is ore or waste is made. Recoverable reserves take into consideration mining methods. New methods for solving this type of problem were recently developed in Geostatistics and so for this reason GMA called for the technical assistance of the Centre de Geostatistique (C.G). The complete estimation was done using the geostatistical techniques and programs of the C.G together with some of the programs of GMA. As the mine was in production at the time the study commenced it was-possible to make frequent checks on the estimated values using blast-hole data. The ore reserves were also estimated using the more conventional interpolation method of inverse square of distance weighting.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. It is also a major exporter of minerals. Canadian open pits are highly mechanized and use state of the art equipment and support technology. During the past few years significant productivity improvements have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment; in pit crushing and conveying; truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments in Canadian Open-pit Mining are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of Global Positioning Systems. Mine planning is computerized; environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning; equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian North.

Vince Lombardi once said, "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." When it comes to building a mine that will operate at the optimum level for the set of geologic conditions from which it was developed, Lombardi's remark might be paraphrased to describe the problem: planning won't guarantee the best possible mine operation unless it is the best possible mine planning. Any sacrifice in the best possible mine planning introduces the risk that the end results may not reach the optimum mine operation desired. This section addresses many of the factors to be considered in the initial phase of mine planning. These factors have the determining influence on the mining method, the size of the operation, the size of the mine openings, the mine productivity, the mine cost, and, eventually, the economic parameters used to determine whether or not the mineral reserve even should be developed. A little-known fact, even within the metal-mining community, is that room-and-pillar mining accounts for most of the underground mining in the united States. According to a 1973 study on noncoal mining (Anon., 1974), more than 76% of the producing mines [of over 1089 t/d (1200 stpd) capacity] produced approximately 70 000 000 t (77,000,000 st) or 60% of the nation's underground tonnage of material by room-and-pillar mining. That same year, 96.8% of the nation's under- ground coal mines produced 262 950 000 t (289,911,000 st) of coal extracted from room-and-pillar mines (Anon., 1976). Thus, nearly 333 000 000 t (367,000,000 st) of the United States' raw material is produced from mines using some form of the room-and-pillar mining system. Because approximately 90% of all mining in the United States is done by some variation of room-and- pillar mining, it is appropriate to give special emphasis to the effects of the various elements of mine planning on room-and-pillar mining. The relationship of these elements to other mining methods will become apparent as the elements are described in later sections herein. TECHNICAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY MINE PLANNING Assuming that the reserve to be mined has been delineated with diamond-drill holes, the items listed in the following paragraphs need to be established with respect to mine planning for the mineralized material. Geologic and Mineralogic Information The geologic and mineralogic information needed includes the following: 1) The size (length, width, and thickness) of the areas to be mined within the overall area to be considered, including multiple areas, zones, or seams. 2) The dip or plunge of each mineralized zone, area, or seam, noting the maximum depth to be mined. 3) The continuity or discontinuity within each of the mineralized zones. 4) Any swelling or narrowing of each mineralized zone. 5) The sharpness between the grades of mineralized zones within the material considered economically minable. 6) The sharpness between the ore and waste cutoff, including whether this cutoff can be determined by observation or must be determined by assay or some special tool; whether this cutoff also serves as a natural parting resulting in little or no dilution, or whether the break between ore and waste must be induced entirely by the mining method; and whether or not the mineralized zone beyond (above or below) the existing cutoff represents submarginal economic value that may be- come economical at a later time. *7) The distribution of various valuable minerals making up each of the minable areas. 8) The distribution of the various deleterious minerals that may be harmful in processing the valuable mineral. 9) Whether or not the identified valuable minerals are interlocked with other fine-grained mineral or waste material. 10) The presence of alteration zones in both the mineralized and the waste zones. Structural Information (Physical and Chemical) The needed structural information includes the following: * 1 ) The depth of cover. 2) A detailed description of the cover including: the type of cover; * the structural features in relation to the mineralized zone; * the structural features in relation to the proposed mine development; and * the presence of and information about water, gas, or oil that may be encountered. 3) The structure of the host rock (back, floor, hanging wall, footwall, etc.), including: * the type of rock; * the approximate strength or range of strengths; * any noted weakening structures; * any noted zones of inherent high stress; noted zones of alteration; the porosity and permeability; * the presence of any swelling- clay or shale interbedding; the rock quality designation (RQD) throughout the various zones in and around all of the mineralized area to be mined out; the temperature of the zones proposed for mining; and the acid generating nature of the host rock. 4) The structure of the mineralized material, including all of the factors in item 3 plus: * the tendency of the mineral to change character after being broken, i.e., oxidizing, degenerating to all fines, recompacting into a solid mass, becoming fluid, etc.; * the siliceous content of the ore; the fibrous content of the ore; and the acid generating nature of the ore. Stillwater Mining Company has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The first use of a TBM was a 4 m (13 ft) diameter main beam unit at the Stillwater mine starting in 1988, where 6.4 km (4 mi) of tunnels were driven parallel to the J-M Reef orebody on four different levels. TBM?s were central to the development of the East Boulder Mine as two 4.6 m (15 ft) TBM?s drove two 5,639 m (18,500 ft) parallel tunnels to access the J-M Reef; one of these units is still in service driving a 2,591 m (8,500 ft) access West of the East Boulder mine for the Graham Creek project. For the Blitz Project, a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter main beam unit will be utilized to drive a 6,858 m (22,500 ft) ventilation and rail haulage level East of the Stillwater mine. TBM?s have been preferred method for developing new mines and sections of the J-M reef as the geometry and geology of the Stillwater Complex allow for faster development compared to conventional methods.

During 1981 the Florida phosphate industry produced more than 43 million metric tons of phosphate rock - about one-third of the entire world production and also generated nearly an equal amount of waste clay and waste clay-sized product that requires dewatering and disposal. The material balance of solids and water for a typical Florida phosphate mining operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the industry has impounded clay waste (about 60% below ground and 40% above ground) in earthen dams, often as large as 800 acres and occasionally greater than 60 ft. high. The dams have served the triple purpose of: 1. Dewatering initial 3% solid waste clay for process water re-use. 2. A reservoir system to minimize water discharge from the mining area and to capture and store rainwater thus minimizing deep well pumping requirements. 3. The ultimate densification and storage of waste clay.

It has been estimated that 30% of the United States coal reserves occur in the Western States at depths which would preclude exploitation by surface techniques. Much of this coal occurs in seams considerably thicker than those presently mined in other parts of the country. Recognizing the lack of technology and experience in exploiting the thicker seam range the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines is implementing a major "Mining System for Western Coal," research program which has as its ultimate objective the development and demonstration of underground mining methods and technology for extracting these seams. One investigation, being carried out by D'Appolonia Consulting engieers, under contract to the Bureau of Mines, is concerned with design of an entry system for longwall top slicing of thick western coal seams. This presentation presents an overview of some of the problems which have to be faced in designing such layouts.

Bacís mining is a young enterprise in Mexico that produces a pyrite concentrate rich in gold and silver. When gold and silver are associated to sulfide minerals, pre-treament such as: roasting, pressure oxidation and bioleching, is required to decompose the sulphides and thereby expose the gold and silver particles to the cyanide solution. A novel method demonstrates that the oxidation and dissolution of gold and silver in alka-line cyanide solution can be conducted simultaneously in the same autoclave in less than 90 minutes with a recovery that exceeds 96%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as pH, leaching time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density were investigated.

The paper presents the evaluation method of the thermal power potential of the salt lakes developed in collapsed salt mines in Romania. It is well-known that the hydro-chemical stratification of these lakes favors warmer internal layers. The degree of heat varies during the year, but, taking into account the large number of genetic lakes of this type, it can be used as a local utilizable power source. The authors analyze the correlations between the physico-chemical parameters of the water and the degree of heat stored as a function of the morphological parameters of the lakes, as well as the technical parameters for capitalizing on this power.

An accepted statement of fact is that transportation next to agriculture is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States contributed immensely to the growth and prosperity of our nation. My objective is to make each and everyone here aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, covered wagons or whatever. If this is your only exposure to the transportation industry then you probably spent most of your life in a cave.

The North Shore 9 Collector System comprised an integral part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District's Water Pollution Abatement Program. The project required the construction of 1,490 m of tunnel, ranging from 1.5 m to 4.6 m in diameter along three separate alignments beneath arterial streets traversing Milwaukee's central business and cultural districts. This paper details the various aspects of the tunnel drives which were accomplished using two Lovat EPB type TBMs in conjunction with pipe-jacking procedures. Shaft configurations developed for the project, including ancillary subsidence mitigation components and portal pressurization facilities are discussed. Anomalies in observed soil behavior at variance with the parameters delineated in the project's geotechnical report are addressed.
