Sustainability management and reporting plays an important role in controlling and communicating a company's efforts in sustainable development. A variety of standards comprising a multitude of indicators often require similar information but with different data quality, level of detail and coverage. This may lead to inconsistencies in external communication because of the difficulties in collection and aggregation of data from different company sites and organisational levels. Using a central database system accessible via internet makes the process of data management more efficient: All relevant information can be collected on-site, with a defined data quality, credibility and consistency. Any type of sustainability indicator can be calculated automatically, once the data is collected. Individual analyses and predefined reports, e.g. GRI G3, can be easily generated and immediately published, making your sustainability communication transparent and reliable.

Introduction Sulfide copper, zinc and iron concentrates are recovered in the 5000 ton per day flotation plant operated by Cities Service Company at Copperhill, Tennessee. The heavy-sulphide ore is first ground to 50 pct. minus 200 mesh and a bulk concentrate floated. The bulk concentrate, over 60 pct. of the ore weight, is reground to 72 pct. minus 200 mesh and then treated in a selective flotation circuit to recover copper and zinc concentrates. The tailing of selective float is the iron sulphide material source for the manufacture of sulfuric acid and iron sinter. The valuable minerals in the ore are chalcopyrite, marmatitic sphalerite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. A typical mineralogical analysis will be found in table 1. A typical material flowsheet will be found in figure 1. Shown in the flowsheet are a scavenger float on the bulk rougher tailing and a copper-talc separation unit. At times a lead-copper separation circuit has been run.

A three-stage fluidizing-bed process consisting of chlorination, selective oxidation and sulfur chloride conversion was tested for processing chalcopyrite concentrate. It was found that the use of excess oxygen was essential for the stable operation of the oxidation reactor. The excess-oxygen gas inevitably causes the oxidation of the sulfide concentrate in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. A new flowsheet is proposed to separate the chlorination and selective oxidation steps with separate flow paths of the fluidizing gases, thereby, preventing the passage of excess-oxygen gas in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. The feasibility of the proposed flowsheet was demonstrated in a laboratoryscale fiuidizing bed setup.

The accumulation, handling, and utilization of sludges formed from wet process phosphoric acid is one of the major problems in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the considerations and techniques that can be employed to provide some measure of control over the problem. An acid made from a Central Florida phosphate rock is used to illustrate the effects of one process design approach used to provide one type of control. Other approaches or techniques are discussed on a general basis. In every case, the discussion is purposely limited to conventional dihydrate processing in which phosphoric acid is produced from the filter at a strength of approximately 30% P205 and is subsequently concentrated to higher strengths such as 44 and 54% P205.

The need for reliable and adaptable underground mine communications has become a focal point for both the safety and logistics of a mining operation. New mine communication technology aims to connect personnel, equipment, and data together while setting up a network that can be utilized during normal operations and also in an emergency event. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) requires mine operators to establish post-accident, two-way communication between underground and surface personnel and electronic tracking for all mine personnel. Communications systems must be designed such that they can survive major mine accidents, including explosions, fires, inundations and ground falls. Typical, wire-bound communication technologies are vulnerable because wires are often destroyed in such accidents. Wireless technologies that work well on the surface, such as cellular telephone networks; have limited applicability underground because the wireless signals do not propagate through rock.

The Trombetas bauxite deposits were discovered by ALLAN, as from the original work of the geologists Drs. E. E. GREIG and 3.A. STAARGAARD on the axis of the Amazon river, between Manaus and Santarem - (see fig. 1). With research licences obtained in 1965 by the SANTA RITA BAUXITA - a subsidiary of ALAN a group of Brazilian geologists, under the supervision of IGOR MOUSASTICOUSHVILLY, begins researches on the areas of Parintins, Juruti and Mathias with unsatisfactory results. In 1966, photographs obtained from the US Air Force and the Brazilian Oil Company PETROBRAS -, covering an Amazon region between Parintins, Santarem and north of Trombetas river, permitted the identification of a great number of plateaux between the Nhamunda and the Trombetas rivers. Based on this information, a research group has worked intensively from 1966 to 1967 allowing the discovery of the trihydrated bauxite in a quite large area. After five years of intense work and analysis of approximately 56.000 samples, near 500 million of tonnes of bauxite are evaluated on the several plateaux of the, area, thus insuring the commercial exploration of these deposits. Such discovery places Brazil among the detainers of the main bauxite stocks of the world and as a potential exporter.

Sodium sulfate is an important industrial chemical. As recently as ten years ago it was produced and consumed in the United States in quantities exceeding 1 Mtpy. Since then, both its production and use have declined; however, approximately half the production still comes from natural sources. [Fig. 1] illustrates the history of production of natural sodium sulfate in the United States. Production of natural sodium sulfate from various types of deposits is the main source of this chemical in Canada and Mexico, and probably in Argentina, Chile, Iran, Spain, and the Russian Republics. MINERALOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Sodium sulfate is widespread in occurrence and is a common constituent of many mineral waters, as well as seawater. Atmospheric precipitation contains sulfate; it is one of the major dissolved constituents of rain and snow (Davis and Dewiest, 1966). Many of the saline lakes throughout the world contain varying amounts of sodium sulfate. Because sodium is usually the dominant cation, some workers make an anionic distinction, referring to lakes containing predominantly sulfate as bitter lakes and those containing predominantly carbonate as alkali or soda lakes (Bateman, 1950). Sodium sulfate in its natural form is found in two principal minerals, mirabilite and thenardite. Mirabilite, the hydrous form, is commonly called Glauber's salt. It was discovered by the German chemist, J.R. Glauber (1603-1668), who derived its name from the Latin, sal mirabile, meaning wonderful salt. Thenardite, the anhydrous variety, was named for the French chemist, Louis Jacques Thenard (1777-1857) of the University of Paris (Mitchell, 1979). The largest quantities occur in the form of mirabilite. Sodium sulfate is found in varying degrees of purity, from theoretically pure efflorescent crystals of mirabilite to combinations and admixtures of other salts and impurities. It is a common constituent of some brines; from this source much is extracted commercially. Sodium sulfate also is found in compounds, such as the minerals glauberite, the double salt of anhydrous sodium and calcium sulfate, bloedite, the hydrous double-salt of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, and burkeite, the anhydrous double-salt of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate. Over 40 minerals contain sodium sulfate in varying proportions; many are of special interest because of their frequent occurrence. Table 1 lists some sodium-sulfate bearing minerals. The reader is referred to other publications (Cole, 1926, Dana, 1932, Grabau, 1920, and Dietrich, 1969) for descriptions of these minerals. Only mirabilite and thenardite will be described herein. Mirabilite Na$04.10H20, contains 55.9% water of crystallization. It is noted for its efflorescence or spontaneous loss of water. On dehydration it changes to the anhydrous form, Na2S0,. Mirabilite is an opaque to colorless, water-soluble mineral that tastes first cool, then slightly bitter. It has a specific gravity of 1.48. It frequently forms as efflorescent, needlelike monoclinic crystals, but generally is found in the massive form. Thenardite, the anhydrous mineral, Na2S04, contains 43.68% Na20 and 56.32% SO3. It ranges from colorless to white and may be tinted shades of gray or brown. It is a water soluble mineral with a slightly salty taste. Its specific gravity (2.67) and hardness (2.5 to 3) exceed those of mirabilite. It commonly occurs in the massive form without visible crystals. Its crystals are frequently tabular pyramids of the orthorhombic system. Sodium sulfate also occurs as a heptahydrate, containing seven molecules of water, but this is unstable and has not been found in the natural environment. The solubility of sodium sulfate has an important effect on the crystallization of the salt in nature, as well as in its production. Its solubility in water generally increases as a nonlinear function of temperature. Below 1.2°C, ice and mirabilite form. As the temperature is increased above O°C, increasing amounts of sodium sulfate become soluble. At 32.4°C, a transition point on the solubility curve is reached, as the decahydrate melts in its own water of crystallization and the anhydrous form crystallizes. With in- creasing temperatures, solubility decreases somewhat. The presence of other dissolved salts changes the transition temperature and solubility characteristics of sodium sulfate.

Barometric pressure changes affect air density, leading to change in the mass of the gas in the gob. When the barometric pressure decreases, the volume of gas in the gob expands, while the volume of gas contracts when the barometric pressure increases, a process which causes the gob to “breathe” out and in. Although the concept of gob “breathing” is simple, its effect on spontaneous heating of coal in the gob area is not clear. In this study, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were conducted to model the spontaneous heating of coal in the longwall gob area under measured barometric pressure changes. A single longwall panel using a bleederless ventilation system was simulated. If there is no barometric pressure change, the intake airflow rate is equal to the return airflow rate. When the barometric pressure changes, these two airflow rates are no longer equal, and the difference between the two airflow rates represents the airflow rate the gob breathes in and out. The effect of inflow and outflow of gas on the potential spontaneous heating in the gob was investigated using the CFD model developed in our previous study. The effect of barometric pressure changes on the spontaneous heating was found to be dependent on the gob permeability and the coal oxidation rate. The effect of barometric pressure changes on oxygen concentrations in the gob was also examined.

The advantages derived from the use of pellet burdens in blast furnaces are so great, that hematite ores are being converted into pellets in greater quantities each year. The conversion of these ores into pellets appears on the surface to be relatively simple. In reality, this is not so. Serious difficulties are encountered in drying these pellets that do not exist in the drying of taconite concentrate pellets. The ores that present problems are goethite and earthy hematites. Green pellets prepared from these ores have very law shock temperatures, 200-600° F. The shock temperature of a green pellet according to our definition is the highest initial temperature to which a green pellet may be exposed without suffering decrepitation. Decrepitation may involve spalling, fracturing or total disintegration. The poor shock properties of these green pellets result from the inability of the vaporized water to escape freely and easily as it is formed with¬out affecting the integrity of the pellet. As a consequence, the pellets must be carefully dried prior to induration. This careful treatment is costly. The slow drying process restricts productivity and requires larger furnaces than desired. The use of an additive to elevate the shock temperature of the green pellets would increase productivity. Bentonite is used in some pellet plants to improve balling but it raises the shock temperature only slightly. Nalco became interested in the shock temperature problem because of its activity in the development of organic pelletizing aids for taconite concentrates. The findings reported here are an outgrowth of our experimental work on the development of shock temperature additives.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

The El Soldado copper mineralization occurs as relatively high-grade irregular ore bodies with assay contacts and with frequent inclusions of barren rock. The sampling method must be timely for production grade control purposes, as well as accurate and inexpensive. Sampling techniques evolved from sampling dump cars at the haulage level to sampling scooptrams at the loading pockets. These were abandoned in favor of sampling production blast holes. Several sampling alternatives are discussed. These involve the selection of optimum volumes and sampling frequencies while taking into consideration geological parameters and statistical analyses of sampling data.

In recent years, it has been recognized that the high horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to a cutter roof. When the immediate roof is thinly bedded, the presence of a high horizontal stress may first cause failure on the bedding planes or weak planes, and then a cutter roof develops as the individual stratum crushes and buckles progressively layer by layer. In this study, the stress distributions in the bedding planes of the immediate roof are analyzed for an entry-pillar system in the multiple longwall panels by using the finite element method. Then the roof failure is analyzed based on the rock failure criterion and the stress distributions.

The objective of this paper is to back analyze the August 6th, 2007, collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah, in order to better understand the geometric and geomechanical factors that contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program, along with the best available information, is used for the back analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six-step base model of the mining in the Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters, rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis, a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal-size pillars, 2) the abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse and 3) from the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.

The Saskatchewan industry has the advantages of an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere else in the world, and large, efficient mines with production costs that compare favourably with those in other countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets, and producers face a distribution challenge to reach the offshore markets which is the main focus of this presentation. One of the characteristics of the world potash business is that all of the major sources of production are located in the developed areas of the world, while there is no significant production in any of the highly populated developing countries. The major potash producers are located in Canada and the United States, in West Germany, France, Spain and the U.K., in Russia and East Germany, and in Israel and Jordan. There is currently no significant production in any of the countries in Asia (with the exception of Jordan where a plant is currently in the start-up phase), Africa, Latin America or Oceania, and all of these areas must, therefore, import a11 of their potash requirements from the producing countries.

Homestake crushing and grinding, practice-was completely revised during the period of 1951-1953. During the conversion, both crushing plants at the head frames the Ross and the Yates, were changes at each plant involved replacing the two 8K gyratories with a rebuilt, The flow sheet single thirty inch gyratory for primary crushing to four inch. The gyratory discharges to a seven foot Symons standard cone crusher set at 1-1/8 inch opening. The cone discharge goes to Tyrock screens fed by vibrating feeders. Screen openings, are l/2 inch by 5 inches: at the Ross. Plant, and 3/8 inch by 5; inches at the Yates. Screen oversize goes to a seven foot Symons cone brusher converted to the short head type; the crusher setting is 5/16 inch. Crusher, discharge; is closed circuited with the Tyrock screens, The above crushing installation delivers a minus 5/8 inch rod mill feed to the mill bins. The crushing revision eliminated the-180 heavy South African type stamps, which had previously reduced the 2 inch crushing plant product to a minus 5/8 inch feed for the 10 rod mills, and 8 ball and pebble.; mills, other revisions in the mill flow sheet, resulted in 3 identical units of about 1350 tons per day, capacity per unit, Each unit consists of an open, circuit 6 foot by 12 foot rod mill, fed from two 24 in by 48 inch vibrating feeders of the four feeders available per unit. A gathering belt delivers the ore discharge of the feeders to the Transportoweigher, which in turn discharge s, into the rod; mill feed spout. Rod Mill discharge is the feed for the 9 foot by 11 foot ball mill, The ball mill is closed circuited with a 16 foot by 30 foot Dorr Classifier. The Homestake make amalgamator, for coarse gold recovery in the ball mill circuit, made' necessary a 36 inch spiral conveyor between the classifier rake discharge and, the combination drum and double scoop feeder on the ball mill See Figure l - the flow sheet of the two stage grinding units.

The objective of blending materials in a bedding pile is to reduce the variation in successive samples taken from the materials to be blended. In designing a bedding and reclaiming operation, several mechanisms are available to effect the reduction of variability, or increase in homogeneity, of the materials. These mechanisms can act before stacking, in the stacking process, in reclaiming and after reclaiming. In evaluating alternative methods of stacking and reclaiming, the potential user must judge each method on the basis of certain criteria; the capital cost of the equipment, the allowable absolute variability of the reclaimed product and the effectiveness of blending. Several stacking and reclaiming methods have been tested using a computer simulation. Based on the results of this program, factors were developed to describe the effectiveness of blending for chevron stacking of discrete materials and preblended materials, bucket wheel reclaiming and drum reclaiming. From these factors, the total effectiveness of a combined stacking and reclaiming system can be determined.

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. Ball mill grinding circuits can be subject to upsets that arise from variable characteristics of the feed ore. These upsets are transients in critical circuit variables such as ball mill mass holdup, circulating load, sump level, cyclone efficiency and product particle size. They may occur frequently so that the operation is continuously fluctuating or they may be of such magnitude that some of the equipment is overloaded, resulting in shutdown, or an undesirable product particle size. The feed ore characteristics that influence ball mill circuit behavior in this manner include the grindability of the ore, the eventual transport characteristics of the ore in the mills and the feed ore size distribution. Control strategies for grinding circuits using conventional proportional-integral (PI) control have limitations to their effectiveness in controlling against feed ore disturbances. The first of these are the interactive nature of two or more control loops on a single circuit. Under some circumstances they begin to fight each other, increasing control error and settling time. PI control loop gain constants can be tuned to give best response for some set of conditions but once these change, as they would with a change in the feed ore, they are no longer the "best" ones (Shinsky, 1967). Due to these limitations, alternatives to conventional PI control strategies have been investigated for grinding as well as other mineral processing operations. These alternatives, all computer-based, include self tuning regulators, decoupling control and optimal control (Herbst and Bascur, 1983).
