"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property. The Dee disseminated gold deposit is the northernmost mine in the Carlin gold belt. We analyzed soil samples £ran undisturbed areas overlying the deposit to determine the usefulness of soil geochemistry in identifying ore zones. The depth of sampling ranged from 12 to 14 inches, depending on soil development. The -80 mesh fraction was analyzed by atomic absorption for Au, As, Sb, Hg, and T1 and by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis for Ag. Highly anomalous Au, Kg, As, Ag, and Sb are most closely associated with ore zones whereas T1 is more broadly dispersed. Hg is the only element that identifies deep ore.

Sandstone escarpments surrounding western coal-bearing plateaus serve as critical habitat for animal species. Effects of mining subsidence on escarpment stability are not well documented; therefore, regulatory agencies may limit extraction of coal reserves underlying escarpments. Because millions of tons of this coal exist on Federal Lands, associated public revenues from Federal royalties, and valuable coal reserves, risk being lost. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze effects of subsidence on escarpment stability. Finite element models that incorporate bedding plane slip, gob formation, and movement along joints simulate escarpment subsidence observed in the field.

This paper focuses on the results and the performance of the grouting program as a means to control groundwater infiltration during the excavation of the 7.7 km (25,160 lf.), 3.5m (11 ft. - 7 in.) diameter Inter-Island Tunnel beneath Boston Harbor in Massachusetts. Two major operations of grouting were performed - water cutoff grouting behind the tunnel heading after excavation and face grouting ahead of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operation. An array of products from cementitious to chemical grouts and various grouting procedures and equipment were employed to evaluate their effectiveness in controlling the water in-flows. Evaluation of the overall performance of each of the grouting rations, overall costs and comparison of face grouting versus post excavation grouting is made.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. A mine fire represents one of the most dangerous and challenging safety issues facing underground mine operators. Given the right circumstances, a mine fire can occur at any location in the active or abandoned mine workings, can quickly grow beyond control, and threaten the welfare and livelihood of the entire underground workforce. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), has been conducting an in-depth program of research addressing mine fire prevention, early and reliable fire detection, and mine fire suppression technologies. One portion of this program is focused on understanding the characteristics of mine fire combustion products and flame spread through large scale deep-seated (firmly established) fire tests and use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. In this study, two deep-seated fire tests were conducted; one fire consisted of coal material and the other utilized the two most abundant fuel sources found in a coal mine: coal and wooden cribbing blocks. The fires were burned to completion while the combustion products were collected and analyzed. In addition, an array of thermocouples was placed within the body of the material to measure flame spread rate. The coal fire test information was then used to develop a CFD model of the fire. This paper describes the fire tests, provides insight into characteristics of flame spread, and presents the CFD modeling work results.

The basic reason for lining underground cavities is to keep the cavity open during its useful life by providing adequately for the support of the surrounding rock and for the necessary degree of water tightness. This covers the entire field of support methods from the simpliest timber support to reinforced concrete in all its variations as applied to tunnels, galleries or shafts. The problem involved in the design of more efficient and economical lining systems for even bigger cavities has been magnified by increased speed of advance made possible by better blasting tecniques, improved tunneling machines and more efficient material handling. Tunnel lining today requires a disproportionate amount of time and money compared to other operations mostly due to the manuel labor involved in its installation. One solution to this problem is the developement of an entirely new concept in tunnel lining designed notoonly to overcome this bottleneck but also to open up the field for further increases in speed of advance. This new lining system acts first as a fast protective armour then becomes the concrete metal form and ends up as reinforcement sheet inside the concrete lining. This system developed and manufactured by Bernold A. G. of Switzerland since October 1968 has been installed in 25 applications in Europe under all ground conditions from stable rock to unconsolidated ground.

Micron-sized gold disseminated in lower Cambrian siltstone has been found at the Sterling mine near Beatty, NV. A shoestring-shaped body has been developed by central and fringe drifts and is being mined via a modified retreat room and pillar system. The siliceous ore crushed to 5.08 cm (2 in ) is stacked to 4.6 m (15 ft) over a layered sand, gravel, and impervious PVC base. Gold is leached using a 0.1% cyanide solution and deposited on activated coconut shell carbon. Stripping of the carbon by hot solutions of 1% NaOH and 20% Ethanol yields overall recovery of about 75% of the fire assay head.

The Umuna epithermal precious metal deposit has provided the target for a simulated rock geochemistry exploration program, directed at bedrock exposed in the drainage system of eastern Misima Island. A geochemical halo to the deposit is readily recognised in the mafic meta-volcanic country rock. This halo is defined by anomalous results for both major (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and minor (Au, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cs, Bi, Ga, S) element geochemistry, extending further than 1km from the deposit. Such halos are sufficiently extensive to provide adequate exploration targets in the search for epithermal mineralisation, complementing mineralogic and secondary media geochemical investigations.

"Rapid population growth and scarcity of space have led many developed cities to bury supply facilities. In line with this, utility tunnels have been employed in Korea since the 1970s. However, approximately 70% of structures were installed more than 20 years ago, in response to the issue of ageing, tunnel enlargement has been proposed. The aim of this study is to investigate geo-mechanical behavior due to tunnel enlargement. Tunnel enlargement methods have been researched to suggest a optimal method. A finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate ground behavior by the expansion of internal space. Vertical displacement and settlement trough width are investigated according to ground stiffness and different enlargement size. It was determined that displacement is affected by the enlargement size and ground stiffness. Based on the deformation results obtained from the numerical analysis, it is possible to predict ground behavior and stability upon tunnel enlargement. INTRODUCTION Various infrastructures such as electric lines, communication lines, gas pipes, and water pipes are jointly accommodated by utility tunnels. These utility tunnels improve the aesthetics of urban areas and help ensure stable supply. The first utility tunnel in Korea was adopted in 1978 and new tunnels are still being installed with the development of new suburb cities. Nevertheless, about 70% of the utility tunnels were installed over 20 years ago and they are still being used through ongoing repair. Moreover, 90% of utility tunnels were installed before 1995. With aging of the nation’s utility tunnels various problems such as concrete deterioration and scarcity of capacity have arisen. As solution, reconstruction has been considered. Reconstruction can enlarge space and improve the performance by replacing existing structures. For reconstruction, two routes have been proposed: underground excavation and cut and cover. In order to avoid traffic problems caused by road occupation and civil appeals during construction projects, underground excavation is the more attractive option. Tunnel enlargement methods have been classified (Seo et al., 2008; An et al 2013) and major considerations during tunnel enlargement have been outlined (Beak et al., 2007). Enlargement construction cases on road tunnels around the world were introduced (Kim et al., 2012) and the deformation curve during tunnel expansion was proposed to investigate the range of protection that should be offered (Kim et al., 2008; Beak et al., 2011). However, tunnel enlargement technology is limited to road tunnels and railway tunnels. Hence, a study on shallow box tunnel enlargement is required for practical application."

The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district and the construction of the E. R. Bell Mine is one of the significant mining developments in the United States during the past ten years. This mine will exploit one of the larger deposits of disseminated gold presently known, with proven, recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 million grams of gold. Interest generated by the success of this project has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell Mine, is a 70/30 joint venture between Freeport Gold Company and FMC Gold Incorporated, both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. and FMC Incorporated. Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Freeport Exploration Company, another Freeport-McMoRan affiliate, manages the exploration and pre-mine development. Drilling, design, construction and management of the Bell Mine are provided by Freeport Gold Company.

P.L. 95-87 contains explicit demands for land-use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land-use plans; however, the sections are not well integrated. Accommodations to these planning requirements may be found in suggestions based on British mineral planning practice. Better links can be created among local land-use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take more interest in local land-use plans and in resource inventories; states should consider devolving to local government responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Conventional underground mapping methods and diamond drilling are being applied in a study to determine the nature of the copper ore occurrences near the footwall of the Osceola lava flow top, commonly referred to as the Osceola Amygdaloid. Our work to date suggests that structures formed by relatively impermeable barriers, created by flowage and injection of still-molten lava from the interior of the flow into the solidified, brecciated crust, acted as the ore receptacles. Ascending hydrothermal fluids traveling near the footwall contact were trapped and confined in these barriers which retarded the direct upward movement of the ore fluids and caused deposition of copper. Oreshoots located near the footwall appear to have been formed spatially' independently from the hanging-wall oreshoots by fluids traveling simultaneously, but along different channelways. The barrier concept as advanced by earlier writers to explain the concentration of the ore-bearing, fluids into broad shoots con¬stituting entire ore bodies is found to be equally as applicable for the localization of smaller oreshoots within the Osceola ore body.

Case histories of water problems in underground mine shafts and tunnels are outlined to illustrate varying degrees of sophistication in grouting techniques currently applied in such construction. The interception of water underground can be one of prior knowledge, i. e., the site investigation provides necessary data to plan a grouting program prior to construction start, or excavations may encounter "changed conditions" or unplanned water. The latter includes catastrophic inflows and emergency situations where the structural integrity of a building or concrete shaft lining are jeopardized. The presentation of this paper outlines some applications of grouting work in underground mine construction throughout the United States in a variety of geological provinces and for a variety of minerals.

Universities have education as their primary purpose. This appears to be an innocuous statement with simple meaning. In an age of conflicting semantics, however, cords and meanings are often lost or changed. The term education is often broadly expanded to encompass any form of learning process, or the accumulation of knowledge, and even to the beneficial application of knowledge to man's problems, hence one find that education in universities is not solely the formal process of texts, lectures, recitations, and testing by a batch process known as class room teaching. Despite critics of education batch is spelled with an "a", instead of an "o" - at least we hope so If one defines teaching as causing to learn, then the learning objectives may necessitate a variety of approaches within the teaching concept and research is among those favored at the graduate and some undergraduate levels. Research has been among the glamour words and certain fields such as oceanography and space science have had more than their share of glamour. Unfortunately, industrial mineral research has not had the competitive drawing power of enamoring students of the "note" generation in terms of glamorous accomplishment. Research today usually requires sophisticated equipment and such equipment is expensive, both for initial purchase and operation. Two modes of potential loss of oxime extractants in liquid extraction processes for the extraction of copper have been studied. In loss "by chemical degradation, two mechanisms of acid hydrolysis are possible, some reagents degrade primarily in the organic bulk phase, Others at the interface between the organic phase-- phase protects the oxime but salts added to the aqueous acid phase can promote the rate of degradation. The reagents reported on are the LIX series (Henkel Cpn), SME529 (Shell Chem.Co.) and P5100 (Acorga) Loss by organic entrainment in the aqueous phase leaving mixer-settlers has also been studied, parameters investigated including impeller/tank geometry and the phase inlet arrangements. The consequences of extractant loss by the above mechanisms...are commented upon. They include the direct economic cost, the possible environmental problems and the implications for downstream operations such, as electrowinning.

To pelletize fine moist magnetite concentrate, a 40% water slurry must be dewatered to about 10% by filtration, before it can be agglomerated into pellets. Slurry pH, typically ranging from 8 to 11, gives the magnetite particle surface a strong negative charge and thus causes two adverse effects. First, this negative charge attracts calcium and magnesium cations, which strongly retard the effectiveness of the bentonite clay binder added during agglomeration. Second, a repulsive force created by the negative charge functions as a dispersant that reduces filtering production rates. Tests were conducted to remove these cations during filtration, by rinsing the moisture remaining in the filter cake with a small amount of water adjusted to pH 6 with HCl. Laboratory work was also conducted at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and at Cliff’s Mining Services Company (CMSC) to corroborate the plant tests. In some cases HCl caused filter bag blinding, therefore CO2was investigated to reduce pH. The CMSC lab tests showed that using carbon dioxide to reduce slurry pH from 7.6 to 7.0 improved filtering production rates by 11%. Plant-scale filtering rates were improved by 23.7% when carbon dioxide addition reduced the slurry pH from 8.6 to 6.7.

The Wobbler Feeder is a comparatively new materials handling and separating device. It is essentially a materials separating or scalping machine, particularly adaptable to separation of oversize particles from mine-run ore and to the separation of oversize materials from overburden, where the removal of oversize materials is necessary, as is the case in conveyor stripping. In construction, the Wobbler Feeder is simply a set of transverse bars of manganese steel, or other wear-resisting alloy steel, each having an elliptical cross-section with the major axes of adjacent bars displaced by ninety degrees so when rotating in unison, the pre-determined space between the bars remains constant.
