"In the 1990’s metal prices were trending in a long term decline and the usual cost cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine-to-Mill movement which optimised across organisational “silos” and utilising new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine-to-Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck, and that blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: • Understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the mill • Develop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuits • Develop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on conveyors and Run of Mine (ROM) muckpiles • Ensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. SAG mill throughput increases of 10-20% were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay. Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000’s Mine-to-Mill was no longer necessary to “survive”, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine-to-Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but it not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be.Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine-to-Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are available for Mine-to-Mill projects: blast-hole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. If we could achieve so much in the 1990’s, how much more can we achieve today when we have the same imperative, the same potential and a larger number of high technology tools?"

This paper will deal with the type of rocks so called evaporites, which are sedimentary rocks produced by water evaporation from seas, lakes or marginal lagoons, in warm and arid climates. Salts derived from these deposits are precipitated according to their solubility; that is, the more soluble precipitates first, overlain by other sediments like silts, shales, limestones, sands, etc. The most common evaporites, according to their chemical composition, are : Chlorides Sulphates Carbonates Nitrates Borates Common salt, or halite, sulphates like anhydrite and gypsum, are the most important. Potassium chloride (silvite and carnalite) and potassium sulphate are of great commercial value.

Portland cement is a basic building material in every country in the world, and, fortunately, the raw materials required in its manufacture are widely distributed. It is a low-priced bulk commodity (price one cent a pound or less, with a density of 100 pounds per cubic foot.) Table 1. Approximate price per pound of selected mineral products. Use of cement begins early in a country's development, and, because of local availability of raw materials, cement manufacture is one of the first heavy industries many countries desire. Use and manufacture of cement usually precedes other industrial materials such as steel and heavy chemicals, and consumption levels off for a long period during development of infrastructure and an economic base. With a mature economy comes a very high consumption. Per capita consumption varies ten times or more between nations (Figure 1).

IT APPEARS that the phenomenon of ion exchange by which saline water was converted to sweet was known to Moses and Aristotle. However, the credit for the recognition of this process is generally attributed to Thompson (1850) and Way (1850), who reported that when a soil was treated with either ammonium sulfate or ammonium carbonate solution, most of the ammonia was adsorbed and calcium was released. It was later proved by Eichorn (1858) that the adsorption of ions from ground waters by clay constituents was a reversible process. The first attempts to utilize ion exchange phenomena was in the field of water softening around 1906, using natural and synthetic silicates. In 1935 Adams and Holmes in England observed that crushed phonograph records (phenol-formaldehyde and amine-formaldehyde resins) were capable of exchanging ions.

Utah Development Company (UDC) operates five large opencut coal mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In total, over 20 million tonnes of coking coal are exported annually from the five mines. Typically, the coal seams dip at 5 percent, are 2 to 10 metres thick, and sub-crop some 20 to 40 metres below surface. In the main, the operations are single seam, but multiseam (2, 3 or 4 seams) operations do exist and will form an increasing proportion of the mining activities as depths increase. Draglines are used as the major stripping equipment, highwall depths currently ranging from 20 to 65 metres. Whilst project feasibilities were based on stripping to a 60 metre highwall, it is now proposed to continue opencut mining to depths exceeding 100 metres. This will entail large quantities of prestripping (ahead of the draglines) and overcoming problems associated with steepening seam dips, including haulage of coal from the pits.

Although manganese is a metallic element and is widely dispersed in nature, it never occurs except as a compound in combi¬nation with other elements. Use of such compounds in the production of glass is known to have occurred in early Egypt. The dioxide of manganese was considered a compound of iron until 1774 when C.W. Schule first recognized it as an element. In the same year, a Swedish mining engineer, J.G. Gahn, became the first to isolate manganese. In 1856 development of the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave economic importance to manganese, and later, in 1882 Robert Hadfield discovered the benefits of high manganese steels. GEOLOGY Physical Properties Elemental manganese is a silver-gray metal, resembling iron but harder and more brittle and used primarily in alloys (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and a wide variety of chemical compounds. Some of the physical properties of manganese include: melting point¬1 245°C; boiling point-2 150°C; density at 20°C-7.43 g/cm3; specific heat at 25.2°C-O.115 cal/g; latent heat of fusion-63.7 cal/g; hardness on Mohs scale-5.0; linear coefficient of thermal expansion from 0 to 100°C-22 x 10-6. Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are pre¬dominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages of manganese. Distribution of Deposits Manganese ore deposits are found worldwide and were formed in various geological environments, but only a rather limited num¬ber of deposits have high grade manganese ore in sufficient quan¬tities to be mined and utilized economically on an industrial scale. It is worth noting the fact that almost all of the significant deposits can be classified into two types of deposits: marine chemical sed¬imentary deposits, and residual (secondary) enrichment deposits. There are, however, a much larger number of geological types but these are not of commercial significance at this time. Sedimentary deposits are the most common and are usually stratiform or lenticular. Manganese minerals were formed by a chemical process during the deposition of marine sediments. They usually contain manganese oxides and carbonate minerals, some¬times interbedded together or with other sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Examples of this type of deposit are the Russian ore bodies of Nikopol and Tchiatoura, as well as the Kalahari deposits in South Africa and deposits of Groote Elyandt in Aus¬tralia. Residual deposits were formed in a different way: by alteration of existing manganese deposits or by concentration of the manga¬nese minerals when other minerals were washed away by weath¬ering or ground water processes. The Nsuta deposit in Ghana, the Amapa deposit in Brazil, the Moanda deposit in Gabon, and nodules in the residual clays of the US Southern Appalachians are examples of this type of geological process. In the case of the Ghana and the Amapa deposits, this is only true for the outer layers of the deposit containing oxide minerals, the inner part being comprised of car¬bonate minerals including manganese carbonate, probably from marine origin. Some sedimentary and residual-type deposits have been metamorphosed, giving rise to small high grade ore bodies. These deposits are regionally metamorphosed, occurring in mar¬bles, slates, quartzites, schists, and gneisses. Some of these deposits, such as the Franklin, NJ, deposit are rich enough to be commercial without secondary enrichment; however, most of the exploitable deposits have been secondarily enriched. Due to the diversity and complexity of manganese deposits, both with respect to deposition and chemistry, a wide range of impurities are almost invariably present in the ores. Table 1 shows that the reserves (i.e., a measured resource that can be economically and legally extracted) are estimated at 814 x 106 tons of contained Mn, which equates to more than a 100 year supply at the current level of production. The reserve base is made up of the marginally economic reserves and sub-economic re¬sources and are some 4.5 times greater than the proven reserves. Also apparent from study of Table I is the fact that some 75% of manganese reserves are found in two countries, the USSR and South Africa. On the other hand, North America (i.e., the United States and Canada) have few significant deposits. Underground blasting has many challenges. The primary aim of blast designers is to optimize drilling and blasting parameters to deal with the associated challenges. Optimizing these parameters is currently based on various rules of thumb, which have many site-specific limitations. Accordingly, computation of these parameters using empirical rock fragmentation predictors can be useful for blast designers. This paper presents the results of work on burden-spacing determination by back-calculation from the empirical Kuz-Ram model for underground stope ring blasting.

The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

Thank you, Don Gentry, for your generous introduction. It is not adequate simply to say that I appreciate very much the vote of the Award Committee putting forth my name as the winner of the 1992 Daniel C. Jackling Award. To look at the list of previous Jackling Award winners is a humbling experience. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration has been blessed with some exceptional members over the years, and I feel privileged indeed to be included among the Jackling Award winners. During the years of my education at Penn State, my field of specialization was mining engineering, with particular emphasis in my master's and Ph.D. work on rock mechanics. But my career has not been quite so tightly focused as that. I have been involved with coal mining in all its variety - its technical aspects, both theory and practice; and its business side, dealing with management and labor, accountants and lawyers, politicians and environmentalists. And I have also been involved with related fields - construction; exploration; barges, railroads, ships and docks; supply houses; the coke business; you name it. Coming from that practical background, I believe it is most appropriate that I talk with you today about some practical matters. But I will not advise you today how to mine coal or protect roof in a hard-rock mine. You fellows know how to do that. The practical matters that I have in mind relate to policy - national policy. I will acknowledge immediately that national policy is often much less than practical, but bear with me as we explore the subject together. I am reminded of a supervisor I had early in my career. He very strongly advised me, back in 1961, to "get involved in the political process," for without objectivity injected into our national policy making, we will become a second-rate economic power. I have selected as the subject of my remarks today, "Coal and the de facto National Energy Policy." There is an energy policy relating to coal, a de facto one, and it's the one we see as a result of regulation, attitudes and culture from our nation's capital. This de facto policy is the one we in the coal business live with every business day. My thesis is very simple - Coal is, in fact, a vital part of our national energy policy and will remain so, as a practical matter, no matter what politicians may do to us, or not do to us. Coal will prevail - that will be the happy ending to my story in which, of course, we are the good guys in the black hard hats. But first, I must flesh out the plot with some other characters and with some threatening activities. There are five main characters in my story: in order of appearance - Perpetual Politics, Rampant Regulation, Selective Science, Electrification and Confident Coal. The time: the present. Perpetual Politics is always a threat to coal. When you cross the Capital Beltway into Washington, D.C., check your wallet and your gold fillings, because you're not likely to run into any friends. On Feb. 20, 1991, just over one year ago, President Bush presented to Congress his National Energy Strategy. "What is your history and how did you get involved in mining?Like many SME members, I came from a mining community with a family history in mining, in my case Walkerville, MT. Both of my grandfathers were underground miners. My father was a miner for a short time. He later sold drinks to the miners. Unfathomable by today’s standards, my dad would pick up the miners’ checks at the pay office and have them cashed and waiting with a shot and beer for the miners when their shift ended. My mother was a nurse, who from time to time, would patch up an unfortunate miner. I remember walking past multiple picket lines on the way to and from grade school, watching homes being boarded-up. I grew up with a deep respect for the critical relationship between labor and management.I had no intention of going into mining and initially set out to pursue a career in chemical engineering. But I attended my first two years of engineering at Montana Tech, due to the proximity and affordability. This is where I met Dr. Tom Finch, a mining professor who taught statics to the engineering students. After a coaching session in a hallway, half way through my sophomore year, I switched to mineral processing engineering. In his colorful way, Professor Finch advised me that, “You do not want to make #@*!! erasers and #@*!! Jell-O the rest of your life go talk to the guys in mineral processing.” He was very persuasive and here I am today.How about your involvement with SME?I encountered SME out of school and a little later in my career. Terry Maio and Jim Arnold invited me to local section meetings in the Missouri Lead Belt. That was my first exposure to the technical programming and relationship building that was possible at the local level. After Ozark Lead shut down and I relocated to Nevada, Rich Johnson, Scott Barr and Dave Collins encouraged me to attend my first annual meeting in Salt Lake City, UT. I joined SME at that time and was fortunate to be engaged by members like Art Schweizer and Jim Arnold, and I soon began the leadership progression for the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division. Since then, I have supported SME at the national and the local level serving in multiple roles and capacities."

In the construction of recent subsurface projects, particularly mined openings and transit systems, it has been apparent that final costs were often greater than first expected. Because many overruns result from alleged differing site conditions, there was reason to suspect that pre-bid geotechnical investigations were inadequate for predicting subsurface geology. In 1982, nine federal agencies involved in constructing underground facilities funded the National Academy of Sciences' U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNC/TT) in an effort to evaluate and clarify the relationship between geological knowledge and construction costs. That committee formed the special Subcommittee on Geological Site Investigations, which spent more than two years studying underground projects by examining contract documents and geologic reports, making site visits, and interviewing owners, designers and contractors. The study ultimately encompassed 84 mined tunnels and chambers and three deep shafts in the United States and eastern Canada. Data collected on geologic exploration, design and construction were analyzed and conclusions reached concerning whether and how site investigations need to be improved. The results of the study are published in two volumes by the National Academy of Sciences. Due to the recent completion date of the main report, it was not possible to prepare a summary for inclusion in the RETC Proceedings. This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. Every year thousands of people from all over the world come to Mount Parnasse, visiting Delphi, the Parnasse ski-resort and other sights in the area of Fokida, available to all ages all year round. This region of Greece, is not only gifted with natural beauty, but also with valuable underground natural wealth: inside Mount Parnasse and the adjoining Ghiona Mountain, there are rich bauxite deposits - the ore from which aluminium is made. In this magnificent part of our country, any mining activities undertaken must be adapted to coexist within such an ecologically sensitive area. This demands an enormous effort, knowledge and the use of technology. This is definitely our Company's primary objective. Our company's (Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A.) activities in the area began in 1933, when Euripides Mavrommatis and the two Eliopoulos brothers, Elias and George, established "Bauxite Parnasse SA". Since then, ten thousand people have worked in these ore deposits, and 45 million tons of bauxite have been extracted. The full length of the underground excavations is more than 300 kilometers and 115 million cubic meters of limestone have been extracted on surface mining. In 1996, Bauxite Parnasse merged with Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A. Now, the company exports more than 1.500.000 mt per year of bauxite to more than 15 countries around the world, offers a significant amount of job opportunities in the region, and imports valuable exchange into the country.

Salt from Great Salt Lake was probably used by the Native Americans prior to the Jim Bridger Expedition to the lake in 1824-25, and was used by the region's early explorers and trappers after that time. From the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847, salt has been produced from Great Salt Lake, starting first with the collection of crude salt from along its shores, and later by boiling down the lake's brine to obtain crystalline salt. Since these early beginnings, salt production from the lake has become a substantial commercial enterprise. Since the early 1960s, research and development have led to the economic production of potassium sulfate, magnesium metal, chlorine gas, magnesium chloride products, and nutritional supplements. Many of the salt-production techniques and equipment that were developed prior to 1964 are still being used today. Sodium sulfate has been produced, but is no longer marketed. Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, and IMC Salt currently extract sodium chloride, which is precipitated during the early stages of evaporation when the brine concentration reaches saturation, or about 26 to 27 percent total dissolved solids. Magnesium Corporation of America produces magnesium metal and chlorine gas, and IMC Kalium Ogden Corporation produces potassium sulfate, as well as magnesium chloride brine and flake products. These salt, gaseous, and metallic products are processed from the sodium-chloride-saturated, high-magnesium-chloride brines, and from the potassium and magnesium salts that are precipitated from the lake brine after it has been further concentrated. One obstacle to salt production is the fluctuating level of Great Salt Lake. In 1983, the lake level began a dramatic rise from an elevation of 4,200 feet (1,280.16 m) to its historic high of 4.211.85 feet (1,283.77 m) in 1986-87 (uncorrected USGS provisional lake-level records). The State of Utah employed flood-control measures, including breaching the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway in 1984, and pumping lake water to a shallow basin west of the lake in 1987. During the high-water years, the lake's mineral-extraction industries faced many challenges including the need to raise dikes to prevent flooding of facilities, broken dikes which resulted in the inundation of solar ponds, and dealing with the lake's greatly reduced brine salinities which resulted in lower annual salt and concentrated-brine production. The years following the record-high lake levels have been a time of adaptation, innovation, and change for Great Salt Lake industries. After its solar ponds were flooded in 1986, AMAX, Inc. built a new solar-pond complex near Knolls, and used the concentrated brines from the West Pond, generated by the State's West Desert Pumping Project. INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation's mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. Due to the variability of subsidence characteristics across the U.S. coalfields, it was concluded that it would be practically impossible to develop a universal predictive model for mining-induced subsidence based on theoretical assumptions. Therefore, an effort was made to find a procedure to develop an empirical subsidence predictive model based on a sufficient Mount of field data from one mining area (in this case the Northern Appalachian Coal Region). It was also thought that this procedure, if successful, could be used as the template for developing predictive capabilities for other coalfields with different subsidence characteristics given a reasonable amount of field data. It has been found, in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region, that the variability of subsidence characteristics can be expressed by a polynomial equation developed through regression analysis of the variable subsidence coefficient and derived directly from the field data. In this study, field data were obtained from 11 Bureau longwall panel studies (16 half profiles) for static subsidence and 14 panels for dynamic subsidence. The effects of lithology, expressed in the form of a variable subsidence coefficient, have been separated for each test site by introducing a correlation between hythetically homogeneous overburden and existing ithological conditions. For each longwall panel, the characteristic of the variable subsidence coefficient was defined along individual static profiles. The definition of mean values with acceptable deviations is the substance of the predictive method. The same procedure was used to develop a predictive model for dynamic subsidence, since it war discovered that the rate of longwall face advance is not a necessary functional parameter. This paper presents the theory, development, and application of the static and dynamic subsidence prediction models.

Carbonaceous sedimentary rocks are abundant in the upper part of the caldera or maar that hosts the Puebio Viejo Au-Ag district, and much of the Moore sulfide zone is in these rocks. These rocks are thinly layered and contain scattered plant remains and variable amounts of volcaniclastic debris and pyrite. The carbonaceous matter in the sediments yields no X-ray diffraction pattern and is not graphite. It has C/N ratios of 4 to 10, and &13C values of about -25 per mil, which indicate that it is dominantly of marine organic origin and partly degraded. Atomic S/C ratios in the unmineralized part of the carbonaceous rocks have a median of about 1.2, much higher than most similar unmineralized rocks, reflecting not only the abundance of pyrite in the sediments, but also the fact that the organic material contains several percent sulfur. Extracts from the organic material indicate that it is thermally mature and that it reacted with the hydrothermal solutions. Atomic S/C ratios in the mineralized carbonaceous rocks are generally higher than those in unmineralized carbonaceous rocks, ranging to values of 5 and more. These differences indicate that significant amounts of carbon were consumed by the reduction of sulfate and metal chloride complexes in the mineralizing fluids as they passed through the carbonaceous sediments. Direct reaction between organic material and ferrous chloride-bearing, acid-sulfate hydrothermal solutions probably caused continuous deposition of pyrite during this period. Intermittent deposition of gold from chloride complexes by the same reaction was probably facilitated by boiling or C02 effervescence.

The Mina Santa Rosa mine in Panama was the victim of a mine closure 24 years ago that left the community in dire straits. The mine showed the potential resources of greater than 1M ounces of gold and 4.5M ounces of silver. Veragold Mining Company decided to reopen the mine and address all the issues that were involved in the startup of an historic mine. This paper provides methods to restore the community trust, provide a transparent process, and develop an environmentally sound flowsheet. Immense scrutiny surrounded the Tailings Storage Facility, and the company developed a plan focused on paste thickening and surface stacking to eliminate the need for a conventional tailings’ facility. Paste thickener principles and benefits are also provided.

In the last two decades, acid iron ore pellets have established their predominant position as the iron-bearing burden material for blast furnace ironmaking in North America. It is a general practice that pelletization plants are asked to produce pellets of certain chemical composition and in a narrow range of sizes. A minimum amount of fines created during handling and transportation is desirable. Such a requirement is often expressed indirectly by the minimum compression load causing a pellet to break. The behavior of pellets inside a blast furnace, of course, is very important for a smooth and efficient operation. Before its melting in the lower part of a blast furnace during this period of several hours the behavior of pellets depends on their properties after induration as well as conditions inside each furnace. Among properties of indurated pellets, the ability to maintain their physical integrity in the burden and to be reducible are most important. To maintain the integrity of pellets (i.e., minimal low temperature breakdown, swelling and softening) so that there will be adequate overall permeability for certain wind rate and local permeability for gas/solid contact for reduction. A higher reducibility will moderate the adverse effects of swelling and softening and contribute to a smooth operation and efficient use of heat and reductants in a blast furnace. An article devoted to the relationships between the quality of iron ore pellets and blast furnace practice has been published elsewhere(1); therefore, no further discussion is needed here. The mechanism of strengthening of iron ore pellets during firing has been the subject of investigation of many authors(2). There is no doubt that the bridging of the growing hematite grains, particularly starting with magnetite concentrates, is very significant in the production of strong pellets. Recently, there are many reports from blast furnace operators that they have noticed the adverse effect of LTB in their plants. It is obvious that the strength derived from bridged hematite grains may disappear when hematite is converted to magnetite with thorough breakdown of grain structures. It is suggested that some other strengthening mechanism may be required in order to improve the LTB index of acid pellets. The influence of porosity on both compression strength and reducibility follows regular patterns. It has been suggested(1) that the amount of liquid slag in pellets during firing determines to a large extent the porosity, hence, indirectly, strength and reducibility.
