A comprehensive study of the environmental conditions of the area affected by the Colfax and Cheswick Power Stations is of extreme importance to Duquesne Light Company. The residents in the valley where the two plants are located have complained for many years about the emissions from the Colfax Plant which is of the 1920 to 1930 vintage and which has a capability of generating approxi¬mately 200 Mw. They were extremely happy to hear that the Company had plans for shutting it down, however, they were extremely unhappy to hear that we were planning to build another even larger one to take its place in the same vicinity, namely the Cheswick Plant with a capability of 570 Mw. They had visions of a plant twice the size of the Colfax Plant and belching out twice as much smoke. A few of the citizens from that area were most vehement at the public hearings that were held by the Allegheny County Air Pollution Bureau for obtaining an installation permit. With two power plants already existing in that area (Duquesne Light Company's Colfax Plant and West Penn Power's Springdale Plant), the primary concern of the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau was that the Cheswick Station might increase air pollution levels beyond what they considered to be dangerous limits. It became very evident that the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau would be extremely reluctant to grant installation and operating permits unless they were satisfied that the new plant would not increase local pollution levels and that we were taking sufficient steps to monitor the emissions from our plants and also the ambient air in the general area. We concluded that an extensive air pollution monitoring program must be conducted in the area to determine the effects of the operation of our plants. Common methods of controlling gob gas in U.S. nines are by means of ventilation of gob areas and gas drainage through surf ace boreholes. Costs of drilling surface gob holes increase as deeper coalbeds are mined. Where gob holes cannot be drilled because of topography, ventilation is the only means of control. Even then, sufficient air may not be available to dilute methane in the bleeder entries to acceptable levels. Thus, new methods of gob gas control need to be developed that are independent of surface topography, and of the mine ventilation system, and less costly than present systems. Except for slight variations in procedures and equipment, Great Britain, West Germany, France, Belguim, Poland, and Czechoslovakia use a common methane control method that is different from the system generally used in the United States, This Bureau of Mines paper reviews European mining methods, mining conditions, and methane control technology and discusses their applicability to U.S. mines.

The mining and processing of basic metals relies on water as a medium for transport. Metallurgical ores are ground, concentrated, leached and refined in an aqueous medium. Water is used for temperature control during processing and in air pollution abatement during smelting. All of these process steps result in liquid wastes. Many of the aqueous wastes from ore processing areas become the raw product for a second stage and water recycling may begin. The point at which water recycling or reuse has been initiated in the past, rather than water discharge, was where water conservation was manditory due to a shortage, where process conditions would allow or benefit from reuse, and where economic considerations demanded reuse. The Fontana, California plant of Kaiser Steel Corporation is an example of an integrated steel plant that was forced to practice water conservation and reuse due to its location in an arid environment.1 Only a small amount of water required to maintain the water reuse system in balance with respect to dissolved solids and product quality is discharged. The Butte, Montana copper ore processing plant of The Anaconda Company obtains 66% of the water required for production by recycling, after clarification and chemical treatment, 30 MGD of wastewater from its tailings ponds. This operation is estimated to save the company about $1200/day over a once through water system.2 Here plant location and economics favored water reuse.

A thermistor probe has been developed to measure in situ temperature profiles underground. A full description of the probe is given. Data collected from the probe has been used to compare the actual profiles with those predicted from a finite element analysis using laboratory measured thermal properties of the different rock types. This comparison indicates the applicability of laboratory measured parameters in modeling the real conditions. Factors such as applied pressure, moisture content and anisotropy on laboratory measurements is discussed.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. Technology plays an ever-increasing role in improving the safety and efficiency of mining operations. Laser scanning and photogrammetry are two useful methods for capturing 3D digital representations of real world objects. While both technologies have been applied to the mining industry in numerous ways, the practical applications in an operating underground limestone mine has been tested for this paper, including for visualization and site characterization. Each technology is capable of creating highly detailed geospatial point clouds, but are all point clouds created equal? This paper presents a comparison of a laser scan and photogrammetry of a limestone pillar and addresses the strengths and limitations of each method for creating digital models of operating underground limestone mines. INTRODUCTION The United States crushed stone business is a ~$14 billion per year industry representing 1,430 companies which operate 3,782 mining operations across the 50 states. In 2017 alone, 1.33 billion tons of crushed stone was produced with 76% used predominately for road construction and repairs, but also for the production of cement, lime, chemical and agricultural uses. Over 70% of domestic crushed stone producers source their material from limestone and dolomite deposits, with currently only 82 mines (2%) operating underground (USGS, 2018). Underground mining requires a different technical skillset, and poses great challenges for production that must be both safe and economical. Therefore, there are many risks that an operation must mitigate in order to produce underground limestone. Some of the challenges in underground limestone mining involve geological hazards that are unique to the rest of the industry. The geologic features such as faults and weaknesses can be difficult to assess in a production environment (NIOSH, 1998). The consequences of failure due to improperly designed underground mining ground support systems, such as from a roof failure, are not only life threatening for the miners themselves, but can easily shut down an entire mining operation.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation was to characterize overburden response due to longwall mining. Subsurface strata and surface deformations were monitored during the mining of two adjacent, 900 ft wide longwall panels in southeastern Ohio. The panels were separated by a five entry, four pillar system (about 350 ft wide). The overburden thickness in the study area ranged from 214 to 280 ft, and the extraction thickness averaged 70 in. To delineate the geology of the overburden, six coreholes were drilled along a profile line extending across the two longwall panels. Multi-point borehole extensometers (MPBX) with eight-anchors were installed in six boreholes to measure subsurface displacements. The MPBX units were continuously monitored using a data logger. During the mining of the first panel, displacement occurred in a radiating pattern beginning just above the extracted area in the center of the panel and extending upward and outward towards the surface and margins of the panel. Overburden deformation did not project over the gate road entries. During the mining of the second panel, the MPBX's showed almost simultaneous displacement, indicating that the overburden began to move as a whole unit. Again, overburden deformation was confined to the immediate panel area. At both panels, overburden movement began when the longwall face was approximately 55 ft beyond the line of MPBX boreholes. Moreover, all ground movement was complete when the longwall face was approximately 200 ft beyond the line of MPBX boreholes. This paper discusses the results of the study and identifies the characteristics of overburden deformation.

A Google search on talc asbestos yields more than 500,000 hits due to the growing number of civil lawsuits in this area. Historically, the litigation was centered on amphibole-containing industrial talc. There was no debate these talcs contained amphiboles, but the issue was the definition of asbestos and whether the amphiboles had an asbestiform habit. Ultramafic-hosted talcs, however, are formed in such a way as to not favor the formation of amphiboles in the talc, but they can occur in the surrounding black-wall. In these deposits, the serpentinite host rock is in direct contact with the talc, therefore, allegations can be made that non-asbestiform amphiboles or non-regulated serpentine group minerals can occur in the final products. We analyzed talcs from both metamorphosed carbonate- and ultramafic-hosted talc deposits using polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron microprobe (EPMA) with wavelengthdispersive spectroscopy (WDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with EDS, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Compositions of minerals determined by EDS alone are not sufficient to confidently identify asbestos, despite common practices by some researchers. We emphasize, using both historical samples, and analyses of currently contested minerals, the importance of determining both the structure and composition of a mineral, as well as defining its morphology, before concluding whether it is asbestos.

The European climate and energy framework for 2030 is highlighting the reduction of man-made CO2 by increasing the use of renewable energy. In this spirit, Germany has decided to erase coal use as an energy source by 2038 completely. This strategy premises a feasible, responsible and sustainable post-mining management. The Research Institute for Post-Mining (FZN) at the TH Georg Agricola University in Bochum, Germany, has developed a holistic approach to meet post-mining challenges. In all efforts, the FZN aims to achieve the fundamental goals of the United Nations to deal with the resources of our planet responsibly and sustainably.

A physical model has been developed to simulate the flows and mixing of gases in the waste of a longwall retreat coalface. The model is used in conjunction with computational modelling, and the distributions of permeability and gas emission in the model waste follow those in computer simulations (Pokryszka et al 1996). The physical model represents at 1170th scale a 200 m long, 3 m high coalface with a waste extending up to 280 m to the face start line. The model is tilted to the same seam slopes as the real face, e.g. 22° ascensional ventilation along the face and 7" slope to the dip. The purpose is to investigate the flow of three components: ventilation seepage flow through the waste; methane; and nitrogen injected to quell spontaneous combustion. A heavier-than-air surrogate gas (SF,) is used in place of methane, and therefore the model is inverted so that gas layers form along the 'roof". The main forces driving the flows in the waste (pressure gradients due to ventilation and the density difference of gas layers) are kept in proportion by appropriate scaling of the permeability. Calibration and validation used data from a coalface at a mine in the Lorraine coalfield. The model is now in operational use.

Lime and limestone-based SO2 scrubbing processes have demonstrated reasonably good success in removing low concentrations of SO2 from flue gases. While most of the operating problems experienced in the early days of scrubbing have been worked out, problems usually increase and removal efficiency drops with increased amounts of SO2 present in the gas stream. In order to overcome these difficulties, yet still taking advantage of lime and limestone as the lowest cost neutralizing agents, a host of so-called double- alkali systems were developed. These processes take advantage of cations such as Na+ and NH4+ capable of forming highly water soluble bases or basic salts, such as hydroxide, carbonate or sulfite, which having been neutralized or acidified by the absorbed SO2 can be regenerated with a lower cost base such as lime.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines initiated research to improve the safety and efficiency of transporting coal from deep underground mines using a balanced air-lift hydrohoist. A 50-m-high pilot-scale model was constructed and tested to evaluate the feasibility of hydraulically hoisting a coal-water slurry in a U-tube pipeline from the mine level to the surface with the assistance of compressed air. A prototype screw feeder is used to continuously compact and inject 5-cm or less run-of-mine coal into a pressurized 20-cm-diam pipeline. Production rates up to 40 metric tph at an airflow of 1.5 m3/min were achieved with the model, and coal size degradation was relatively minor. Modifications are in progress to achieve 100 tph at an airflow of 2.8 standard m3/min injected into the riser pipe. Pilot-scale results indicate that an air-lift hydrohoist system is a feasible, cost-effective alternative to conventional skip hoisting that can be installed in existing shafts or surface-drilled holes closer to the face area. Air-lift hydrohoisting offers advantages of infinitely adjustable slurry flow rates, reduced pressure at the point of coal injection, and flexible design that can be combined with hydraulic pumping. Proposed design changes are discussed for coal transport, mine layouts, ventilation, fire control, and escapeways using this system.

What is the primary function of an impact assessment? Many people at the International Association of Impact Assessment?s (IAIA) annual conference said that it is time to return to the fundamentals and consider the underlying drivers of impact assessments ? human health, safety and security. This fall, managers struggling with those fundamentals will receive extra support when a new course focusing on health and socially responsible security is launched online and in British Columbia, Canada, home to many of the world?s junior miners. Now in its 33rd year, the IAIA conference recently held in Calgary, Canada, typically brings together a range of professionals who work in the impact assessment field, including academics, as well as people conducting applied disciplines, such as social and environmental performance management. It is a chance for people grappling with how to assess impacts from projects (for example, dams, mining and other extractive projects), to compare notes and to talk about developments in how to measure, track and report on them. The comments about returning to fundamentals rose as participants talked about the ongoing and increasingly recognized divergence between three main impact assessment streams: environmental, social and health (EIA, SIA and HIA, respectively). Discussions in sessions and in the corridors included calls for streamlining, for integration, for improvement and sharing of practice ? particularly in the HIA stream, where those deeply engaged in the health discipline questioned how HIAs and their intended outcome of protecting human health can be better integrated into the EIAs or SIAs that dominate the impact assessment realm. EIAs and SIAs have become the main tool, particularly from a permitting perspective for large-scale mines, but seem to leave projects with little real information about what they need to do. Human health is not the only concern re-emerging. Although not reflected at the conference, there appears to be an emerging understanding of the need to link the determinants of health with socially responsible security practices. Companies conducting independent social performance assessments for international financial institutions based on the International Finance Corporation?s Environmental and Social Performance Standards increasingly wrestle with both community health and security issues as extractive companies encounter challenging social environments around the world. Once again, the intended outcome is to better protect human health, including avoiding health impacts from conflict, abuses and violence.

Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F). When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. A mining company with a site characterized by geothermally high temperature ground plus highly reactive ground employed a blasting system like the one described above. The site desires to improve blasting performance by moving to an in-hole delay initiation system that can withstand the site ground conditions. At the request of the mining house, DynaEnergetics developed an electronic initiation system for application in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground conditions. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1 ms increments up to 1500 ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits.

Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

Mexico's mineral wealth has long been recognised and indeed has played a historically significant role on a world scale. The dynamics of the Mexican mineral industry have experienced a dramatic transformation especially over the last two decades. This transformation has mainly been instigated by the high growth rates and industrialisation of the Mexican economy since the 1960's. This paper focuses on the base metals sector of the industry which represents one of the major contributors to this transformation. The objective is to present a brief base metals review and to discuss some recent occurrences which pertain to this sector of the industry. This is followed by a discussion of mining's relevance in the current economic situation in Mexico. With this overview as background, the investment climate, primarily from a domestic investor's perspective and secondly in terms of foreign investment, is discussed. Finally, some recent government initiatives, including tax and accounting changes, are outlined. Any one of the sections of this paper can easily be developed into an extensive and indepth analysis; however, the intention of this paper is to provide the reader with a broad overview of the topics discussed.

Semimobile in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems can help reduce truck haulage in openpit mines by bringing the crusher closer to the excavation areas. Optimizing a production schedule with semimobile IPCC requires integrating extraction sequence, destination policy, crusher relocation, conveyor layout and truck fleet investment decisions. A mining complex with multiple mines and IPCC systems should be optimized simultaneously to find an optimal schedule for the entire value chain. An integrated stochastic optimization framework is proposed to produce long-term production schedules for mining complexes using multiple semimobile IPCC systems. The optimization model has flexibility to select the crusher locations and conveyor routes from anywhere inside the pits. The framework uses simulated orebody realizations to consider multielement grade uncertainty and manage associated risk. A hybrid metaheuristic solution approach based on simulated annealing and evolutionary algorithms is implemented. The method is demonstrated using an iron ore mining complex

The contributions of these individuals have undoubtedly had a significant and lasting impact on the mineral and mining industry. The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.
