"INTRODUCTION This research produced a shotcrete formulation that extends beyond stabilization and can be used to restore the structural integrity of damaged infrastructure. The primary challenge was to develop a shotcrete or gunite with structural strength within a few minutes to prevent parasitic loading and allow ingress into damaged structures within a few minutes of the mix formulation being applied. This also applies to mining conditions where rapid support of progressive failures can minimize failure. An additional benefit was the discovery that the product had extremely high adhesion properties in addition to high flexural strengths. The approach to product design was the development of “single bag” dry mixes that are entirely self-contained, can be rapidly transported anywhere in the field or underground, and be deployed using simple equipment. Dry mix eliminates issues relevant to high shear water mixing, as water is added in the form of a mist at the point of delivery; thus low W/C can be achieved. However, as there is no onsite powder mixing, the product must have a high degree of inherent homogeneity. A commercial version of this material is currently offered as Minova’s Tekcrete Fast® product which has been successfully deployed in the mining industry and is currently being used in civil, construction and tunneling operations. The material can rapidly stabilize unstable ground in metal/nonmetal and coal mines. This paper described the technology development, product testing results and applications in mining and civil applications. BACKGROUND The original development of this product was to complete rapid stabilization of shock damaged structures, which falls outside the purview of normal construction and mining practices, due to the critical time issue and the nature of the damaged structure. The stabilization of damaged structures requires materials and equipment that can be rapidly deployed to place materials that have very rapid strength development. These materials need to be placeable at a distance to provide some degree of safety to the responders. In addition, the materials must be able to adhere to structural surfaces that have not been specially prepared and conditioned, and may also be highly fractured, dusty, wet, and quite possibly hot or extremely cold. The technology for the rapid delivery of large volumes of cementitious materials to vertical or even overhead surfaces currently exists. Pneumatic delivery (shotcreting) has been used in construction for over 100 years (American Shotcrete Association, 2014). Shotcreting has played a major role in structures like the Washington D.C. Metro subway system and been used in underground mining applications routinely to serve as part of the primary and secondary support system when used in conjunction with traditional roof bolts. Numerous rapid setting cements are commercially available. They are used for rapid repair of surfaces such as bridge decks, pavements, and commercial floors, as well as structural repairs of vertical and overhead surfaces. Few of these products are specifically marketed for use in shotcrete applications. The majority of rapid setting cements are based on, or at least contain, Portland cement as a principle component. Other components are added that help provide early strength, such as high alumina cement (HAC), organic polymers, chemical accelerators (which can also be added during concrete batching), and calcium sulfate hemihydrate (e.g. gypsum plaster) (Lea, 1971). Cementitious mortars prepared with some of these cements can achieve compressive strengths of 6.8 – 13.8 MPa (1,000-2,000 psi) within 1 hour. However, Portland cement mortar and concrete typically require many weeks of proper curing to reach significant levels of their ultimate strengths, even when used with set accelerators. Nonfatal injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STF) that occur at surface mines can result from inadequate lighting. Mobile equipment operators are among the occupations associated with the nonfatal incidents reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In addition, getting on/off the equipment (ingress/egress) frequently adds to the highest proportion of nonfatal incidents. Accordingly, researchers at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a field study to investigate lighting on haul trucks and wheel loaderswith regard to glare and illuminance levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The objective was to determine whether two light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires—a Mr. Beams® (model MB390 Ultrabright) (area luminaire-1) and a NIOSH-developed Saturn (custom-designed for a mine roof bolter study) (area luminaire-2)—could complement a headlamp luminaire. Measured levels of visual tasks, with the headlamp alone and the area luminaires plus the headlamp, demonstrated that illuminance met or exceeded IES-recommended levels. Nevertheless, the area luminaires illuminated a much broader area, which is key to increasing hazard awareness. Discomfort and disability glare were lower with area luminaire-1 than with area luminaire-2. Differences in glare were more noticeable for newer models of haul trucks and loaders featuring updated ingress/egress system designs. This study demonstrates that commercially available luminaires, such as area luminaire-1, are capable of complementing headlamp lighting, and can thus improve a miner’s ability to detect and avoid STF hazards.

The quantity of coal recovered by diamond coring techniques is not sufficient in many instances to make meaningful coking and/or ash fouling tests. Quantities in excess of that obtained by conventional coring techniques, usually in amounts exceeding 500 pounds, has been designated bulk sampling. During the past three years, AMAX Coal Company has utilized five methods of bulk sampling. It was our desire to obtain a bulk sample that was diagnostic of the seam by the most expedient and economical method. From the beginning all of our efforts have been directed to methods which would extract the required coal from slim boreholes which provide quick and inexpensive access to the coal seam, regardless of depth, terrain and accessability. In our efforts and investigation several large diameter cores have been taken from thick coal seams at relatively shallow depths in easily drilled rocks. On the other hand, for deeper thin seams multiple large diameter coring is more expensive and time consuming. It is somewhat less expensive when multiple cores are taken from a single slim borehole utilizing deflection coring, although considerable skill is necessary.

Recent sinkhole activity in carbonate terranes of Alabama has resulted in damage to transportation lines, structures, utility lines, and property in general. Active sinkhole development and subsidence has been well documented in Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, and South Africa. An excellent example of the potential danger resulting from this activity is the spectacular collapse under a South African gold ore crusher plant that resulted in the death of 29 men in 1962. Due to the severity of the problem in certain localized areas in Alabama, a detailed investigation is being undertaken by the Geological Survey of Alabama and the U. S. Geological Survey. One of the most promising techniques is the application of aerial photography and thermal infrared imagery. Conventional and modern remote-sensing techniques are being used in Alabama to locate and define areas of sinkhole activity and to determine which areas are most prone to its occurrence.

The study investigates the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain (CAC) in reducing respirable dust exposure for shuttle car and ramcar operators in underground coal mining. Field testing showed that the CAC reduced dust exposure by 11-34% overall and by 57-65% during ramcar loading by the continuous miner. These results demonstrate the CAC’s potential as a significant dust control device.

Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. (SDA) designed a tunnel project that fulfilled the Sustainability Objectives of Social Equity, Environment, and Economics. The project translated the principles of Sustainable Development into actions that lessened the impacts of construction on environment, lives of residents, businesses, traffic, and other social systems (i.e., shopping, recreational, and educational). The project involved the construction of a 16,108 feet of 84 inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor by tunneling 40 feet beneath the ground surface through difficult geological and hydrogeological settings. An effective public information and stakeholders relationship program was developed to achieve the stated objectives of sustainability.

The ore at this new underground operation is a massive sulfide breccia with high copper values. A major highway and electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface orebodv. The mining method being used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner together with a single boom, hydraulic jumbo is used for the mining. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation.

Productivity is a fascinating concept. Like motherhood or apple pie, we know it as a good thing. Just what it means is not so clear. To a coal miner we assume it means tons of coal hauled from the mine. To the company president it means profit after capital, labor, and other costs have also been reckoned. To the government economist it means output in a balance of payments. What does it mean to the biologist, and can reclamation really be productive? In this paper we discuss productivity from a biological viewpoint, give some yield data for various types of reclamation plantings, and discuss how our demand for or acceptance of differing kinds of productivity is tied up in bigger questions of land use, environmental stability, and resource allocation.

Bioleaching is a viable option for the processing of auriargentiferous refractory ores with high arsenic content. The application of mesophilic (A. ferrooxidans and ?L. ferrooxidans?) and thermophilic bacteria of the genus Sulfolobus (S. solfataricus and S. acidocaldarius) as oxidant treatment before the cyanidation of an industrial arsenical pyrite concentrate is presented. The results show that extraction of gold and silver increases due to bio-oxidation caused by mesophilic bacteria and results in a maximum gold recovery of 68%. In all strains studied, biooxidation resulted in an average silver recovery of 50%. The results showed that all evaluated strains were sensitive to solids content (5 to 20%) and average particle size (75 and 38 µm) of the concentrate.

Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material. But the conveyors essential to this movement suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust, and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded. This presentation will start with an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design. It will then report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, Nevada. Here performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine. THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSFER POINTS Conveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance are the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created. The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material—cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage, or airborne dust—that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems, and issues with community relations. As estimate attributed to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that 85 percent of conveyor maintenance is a result of fugitive material at conveyor transfer points. TECHNOLOGIES TO IMPROVE TRANSFER POINTS A number of techniques to improve the performance of conveyor transfer points have been developed. They include: • Absorbing impact, to prevent damage to belt, belt support systems, and conveyor structure, and reduce spillage caused by the impact energy arising from long material drops or large lumps of material loaded onto the receiving belt. • Stabilizing the belt line, to eliminate sag that allows spillage and encourages material entrapment that can damage the belt. • Protecting the skirtboard seals, by sheltering the sealing strips from the mass of cargo pushing material toward the edges of the belt. • Using self-adjusting, multiple-barrier edge seals, to keep material on the belt by providing long-lived seal efficiency with minimum maintenance requirements. • Controlling and centering the belt’s path, to eliminate belt wander and the spillage and damage it can cause. • Allowing dust to settle, through the incorporation of chutework that provides expanded stilling zone and the use of dust curtains at the points where the belt enters and exits the transfer. • Adding supplemental dust control systems, through the installation of systems for passive dust gathering, water-based dust suppression, and/or active dust collection."

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1.0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of S02 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

This study used artificial neural networks (ANNs) coupled with Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) to analyze truck haulage data from openpit mines. The proposed weighted ensemble models performed better than benchmark models in predicting truck productivity, providing a new means of solving complex data and improving mine planning and decision-making.

"The traditional approach to rail tunnel fire safety design is to follow NFPA 130, which assumes a major tunnel fire could occur and requires bi-directional emergency ventilation. There is no regard to the impact of ventilation on fire growth and smoke production. In Europe and other parts of the world, the need for tunnel ventilation systems to provide smoke management in the event of fire is being questioned. The European Commission’s Safety in Railway Tunnels TSI is based on a philosophy that improved running capability (preventing fires and other events stopping the train in the tunnel) and elevated fire performance of materials means the chances of a major fire in a tunnel is highly unlikely, with only small fires expected, and no tunnel ventilation required. This approach is reinforced by the International Tunneling Association which has recently published an Engineering Methodology for Performance Based Fire Safety Design on Underground Rail Systems, which includes a methodology that does not require assessment of tenability in tunnels, but requires a scenario based risk assessment to be undertaken to determine overall fire safety measures. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh has shown that forced airflow from a mechanical ventilation system may promote fire growth and increase smoke volumes much more than with natural ventilation. Whilst the concept of no mechanical ventilation (i.e. natural ventilation) is a new concept for some, for many rail tunnels it is worthy of serious further consideration. RAIL TUNNEL SMOKE MANAGEMENT AND STANDARDS Smoke management using mechanical bi-directional ventilation systems has been a central part of the fire safety design solution under NFPA 130 for rail tunnels since 1982. The current version of the standard, NFPA 130: 2014, states that mechanical ventilation should be fitted to rail tunnels of length greater than 305 meters and an engineering analysis should be undertaken for tunnels of length 61 to 305 meters to determine whether mechanical ventilation should be fitted. However, this approach is not necessarily reflected elsewhere in the world. In Europe in particular, mechanical ventilation systems for smoke control within rail tunnels have taken a much less central role within the standards framework."

Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a seven-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Company in southeast Utah. The support system allow good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered, Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."
