"Underground structures such as square/arch steel sets, king beam structure, etc. are widely used for the roof support in underground mines. In designing and calculating the required carrying capacities of these underground structures, how to identify the potential rock loads on the structures over long term is a challenging question for ground control engineers. Based on design practices of both surface and underground structures, the authors have designed and applied appropriate load factors in underground structural design projects to accommodate different rock types, entry/intersection dimensions, roof geologic conditions, availability of roof bolts and water, etc. Classification of load (reduction) factors for large-span underground intersections are presented for reference. Success of designed underground structures in effectively controlling roof stability over years indicates the applicability of the load factor concept for underground structural design, and its same significance as of the load factor specifications in ASCE/SEI 7-10, ANSI/AWC NDS (2015), and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012). The load factor concept will facilitate ground control engineers to appropriately utilize popular structural design software, such as RISA-3D or -2D to efficiently design and analyze underground structures.LOAD FACTORS IN STRUCTURE DESIGN APPLICATIONSIn structures, loads cause stresses, deformations, and displacements. Assessment of their effects is carried out by the methods of structural analysis with the help of load factors. Loads can be increased or decreased by load factors to meet the requirement that design strength be higher than maximum loads. For example, in designing a staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. Face ventilation and water sprays are the primary controls used on continuous miner sections to protect workers from respirable coal and silica (quartz) dust. Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the impact on respirable dust concentrations when increasing airflow from 3000 to 9000 cfm (1.42 to 4.25 m3/sec), water flow from 15 to 35 gpm (0.057 to 0.132 m3/min) , and water pressure from 80 to 200 psi (5.52 x105 to 1.38 x106 pa). The effective limits for each control and interactions between these controls were of particular interest. Initial analysis concentrated on defining the impact of the control parameters on the respirable fraction of the feed dust, which was a blend containing 90% coal and 10% quartz. Gravimetric sampling indicated that airflow had the most significant individual impact on respirable dust levels and resulted in reductions of 99% at the operator and 57% in the return. Regression modeling was used to predict dust concentrations at the operator and in the return. Significant interactions were observed between control parameters and often, defined the level for a control parameter where increases above that level did not significantly benefit dust control. Increasing airflow to 8400 cfm (3.96 m3/sec), water flow to 25 gpm (0.095 m3/min), and water pressure to 140 psi (9.65 x105 Pa) typically provided respirable dust reductions at both sampling locations, while optimizing use of control resources. After determining these relationships for the total respirable fraction, selected filters were analyzed for quartz content to define the impact on the quartz component of the feed dust. For the individual control parameters, airflow again had the most significant impact and resulted in reductions of 98% at the operator and 26% in the return. Regression modeling of the quartz concentrations indicated that no significant interactions between control parameters were present. At the operators location, airflow was the only parameter identified as having a statistically significant reduction for quartz dust. A reduction in quartz approaching 95% was observed for increasing airflow to 6000 cfm (2.83 m3/sec). Increases above 6000 cfm had little additional impact. In the return, a linear relationship between control parameters and quartz levels was observed with reductions of approximately 27% predicted for increasing any one control parameter to its maximum level. The synergistic impact of increasing all control parameters to maximum levels resulted in a maximum predicted reduction of 81%.

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor. This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

The term “Paste Technology” was first used in the late 1980’s. It was used to describe a high fines (15 wt% or greater minus 20 microns), low water content backfill material that could be transported underground through a borehole/pipeline distribution system (4” to 8” dia.) at a yield stress similar to fresh concrete (100 to 400 centipoise). This “Paste Backfill”, unlike slurry transported backfills does not segregate into separate solid and liquid phases at low pipeline transport velocities or upon disposal into the underground stope. Paste backfills can consist solely of fine material, or can include fines plus sand and aggregate similar to a concrete mix. Pipeline transport of paste requires that sufficient fine material (minus 20 micron content) is contained within the mix to lubricate the pipeline walls to create a plug flow condition. For concrete, the fine material is supplied through the cement addition to achieve high compressive strength. For paste, the fine material is generally available in large quantities in the form of mill tailings. The paste tailings can be transported underground for use as backfill or discharged on the surface in a tailings management facility (TMF). This natural abundance of fine grained material is not exclusive to mine tailings but is common to many waste streams in many different industries. This makes the disposal of many waste materials very amenable to paste pipeline transport and placement as a non-segregating slurry. The potential use of paste technology for a wider group of waste materials was realized by these authors and others over two decades ago. Through the effort of this small group the use of paste technology has expanded over the years to become recognized as a low cost, environmentally superior, and technologically controllable method of transporting and placing specific material waste streams with a low water content and high placement density. The high yield stress nature of a paste also lends itself well to the blending of one or more coarse waste materials into the fine waste material paste stream. This allows all the waste materials to be transported by pipeline, increases their placement density; decreases the supernatant release/treatment, reduces contaminant mobilization, hydraulic conductivity and oxygen/water reactivity through encapsulation in the paste matrix. The following paper describes the present state-of-the-art use of paste technology in the world today. It also describes future uses of the technology that are under development and speculates on the overall use of the technology for waste management in the future.

Carbon dioxide capture from coal-fired power plant flue gas and subsequent sequestration is expected to play a vital role in mitigating global climate change. To meet the growing need for CO2 capture Technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and Utilization. We have successfully converted CO2 into oxalic acid using an electrochemical approach. If oxalic acid can be produced in bulk from CO2, it can be used to leach rare earth minerals at low cost. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. In this paper, we will present an idea of how the factors mentioned above will effect the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to Oxalic acid. INTRODUCTION. CO2 is thermodynamically quite stable, as shown by its highly negative heat of formation. Thus, it is expected that the formation of any useful chemical from CO2 will require the input of at least as much energy as geological sequestration. However, to be more effective the resulting economic value of the chemical need only pass the cost of the additional energy required beyond geological sequestration. This lends itself to two extremes: one where the quantity of energy required is low and one where the economic value of the additional energy is low. It is expected that CO2 can be reduced via electrolysis to several compounds. Of particular interest are formic acid, oxalic acid, methanol, ethanol, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide (as a component to syn-gas). These chemicals have been reported as electrolytic products previously in literature and have considerable potential for application. EXPERIMENTAL Electrocatalytic Production of Oxalate from CO2 We are using membrane electrolysis cell to produce oxalate from CO2. A membrane electrolysis cell is a 2-chamber electrolysis cell where the chambers are separated by a selectively permeable membrane. To produce oxalate, a cation exchange membrane (which selectively exchanges cations) was used. Previous literature suggests that in the cathode chamber an organic electrolyte, such as tetraethylammonium perchlorate or tetraethylammonium bromide in dimethylformamide, are preferred3. In the anode chamber, a sodium hydroxide solution water is used. Carbon dioxide is then bubbled into the cathode chamber as a current is applied.

Foreign and domestic companies find the mineral potential of this country's stern public lands, its capital markets, political stability, and "open-door" policy attractive for hard mineral exploration. Traditionally, exploration in the US has been geographically based and responsibility oriented at the district level. The 1970s brought a decentralized approach to exploration as major non-metal companies began to diversify into hard minerals. The emphasis was on capital intensive metal and energy projects involving bulk-tonnages. The recent economic downturn in metals has caused many of the new participants to withdraw from the mineral scene. The surviving companies have shifted their emphasis toward medium scale precious metal projects having high operating margins and rapid return on equity. Exploration expenditures in the United States are now principally focused on gold and silver to the exclusion of practically all other commodities. In the search for precious metals companies have scaled back their exploration efforts and have began to apply new approaches to target selection. The search is being assisted by rapidly evolving conceptual models. The change in orientation has led to numerous new discoveries. The finds are essentially "rediscoveries" that c,-re previously uneconomic. The majority are low-grade surface deposits that have involved low discovery costs and short lead times for development by low-cost mining and beneficiation methods. The emphasis on gold to the exclusion of all other commodities raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 80s.

Tin has been one of the very few commodities which has been covered by an international commodity agreement. It is the only metal so covered. The reason behind tin's prediliction for an agreement has been the inconsistency of the price pattern for tin during the entire 20th century. It is not surprising in view - of the wide and wild fluctuations in its price that tin has been called the Cinderella metal. An examination, for example, of prices in 1977 alone attests to the erratic behavior of the tin markets. The high was recorded on October 27 at M$1,895 per picul and the low on January 3 at M$l,314 3/8, on the Penang market, a spread in Malaysian dollars of $581 for a picul weighing 133 1/3 pounds. The first steps in international cooperation on tin were taken after the price bonanza of the First World War. Despite a lack of increased consumption, and in spite of the fact there was no shortage of mining production during the war, prices boomed. Shipping shortages and thinning stocks brought about a situation where in the U.S., industrial stocks were only 1/6 of what they had been in 1914. The boom busted early. In 1921 the tinplate industry of the world had cut its output in half and total world consumption of tin fell by 1/3. Tin producers became so concerned that they created what was called the Bandoeng Pool. It accumulated stocks held by countries now known as Indonesia and Malaysia, amounting to 28 percent of the combined production of the two countries and about 15 percent of the total world for 1921. The pool holdings were shortly exhausted and thereafter in the years 1924 to 1928, general boom conditions existed for tin.

The longterm future of Glencores’ mining operations in the Sudbury basin area of Ontario, Canada likely depends on mining deposits at depths below two kilometres. To gain a better insight into the rockmass response to mining, a geological scouthole program has been implemented at Glencores’ Nickel Rim Deep and Onaping Depth Project to gain insight into rockmass conditions ahead of the devel-opment face. The scouthole program involves drilling long (up to 600 m) subhorizontal boreholes drilled ahead of the development end and collecting data about the rockmass conditions from various geophysi-cal and mechanical tools (in addition to conventional core logging). Once all data has been collected and the borehole is available, seismic sensors are installed up to 450 m down the hole as part of the micro-seismic monitoring program with the leading sensor always located ahead of the development end. The recorded seismic data is used to provide realtime insight into the rockmass response to mining. On May 20, 2017 a flurry of seismicity with a maximum moment magnitude (Mw) of 0.7 occurred causing damage to the ramp heading. Data from the microseismic monitoring system had indicated that conditions at the development end were changing prior to the rockburst. A back analysis of the scouthole data indicated a clear anomaly in the rockmass at the location of the rockburst. The scouthole data also provided sufficient information to suggest that once this anomalous zone was exited, mining conditions would improve. With the microseismic monitoring system providing realtime information from the rockmass, the area was re-habilitated and ramp development continued successfully. Details of the rehabilitation and adjustments to the ramp development are discussed. Some correlations between the scouthole data and recorded micro-seismicity are also presented.

In some parts of the world, silver chloride occurs naturally in deposits of cerargyrite (1) (i.e. horn silver). In other cases, silver chloride is produced and exploited for its well- known photographic or electrochemical properties. In this case, it is a valuable commodity needing no further refinement. However, silver chloride is frequently encountered in precious metals refining. In most cases, it is a by-product that occurs in small amounts. For example, it is a common occurrence in gold refining when using the Miller and Wohlwill refining processes or when parting fire assay beads. As such, the mode of reduction to elemental silver is of little impact on the overall refining economics. Thus, a variety of reduction methods are employed all enjoying varying degrees of popularity (2). On the other hand, silver chloride serves as a key intermediate in the production of fine silver by nitrogen species catalyzed acid pressure leaching of refractory silver concentrates. This has most recently been practiced at the Sunshine Mining & Refining plant located in Kellogg, Idaho. Thus, efficient methods of reduction, precipitation and materials handling on an industrial scale are of the utmost importance. In this presentation, the evolution of these methods will be detailed.

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

The abstract discusses the use of numerical simulations to investigate roof fall in underground mines. It highlights the advantages of the discrete element method (DEM) in simulating large strain problems and fracturing processes, while acknowledging its computational limitations for large-scale problems. The study presents a 3D numerical model coupling the finite difference method (FDM) and DEM to simulate laminated roof failure in a coal mine. The model represents the laminated roof with bonded particles and discontinuities, while the surrounding rock is represented by continuum zones. The research analyzes the fracturing of the laminated roof as the entry advances, demonstrating the coupled method's ability to reproduce laminated roof failure.

Forecasting mined grade variability from exploration information is a challenging task in mine planning. For effective planning of activities such as workplace scheduling, ore grade quality control etc. development of realistic numerical/simulation models of in-situ variability from exploration information is an essential first step. Geostatistical conditional simulation (GCS) is one of the well known methods to develop these simulations. Recently, stochastic fractal models based on the assumptions of scale-in variance and self-similarity have been used for developing simulations of several natural phenomena. It has been suggested that these models might permit generation of short-scale variability information from exploration data with greater fidelity when the data satisfies the attendant assumptions. In this paper the stochastic fractal models are reviewed and their relationship to geostatistical variogram models is examined. A comparison of the two simulation techniques has been per-formed using coal sulfur data from a mined out coal property. The results of this comparative analysis are also presented in the paper.

"The mining of tabular deposits accounts for a significant portion of modern production in both underground hard rock and especially, soft rock mining. There is a large discrepancy between the availability of tabular reserves and the amount of development of these deposits, particularly when the deposit has a dip of around 25-50 degrees. This project studied the technical and practical barriers to the mining of these deposits through modern and historical case studies. The primary technical barriers to the development of these deposits are material movement and roof support. The study of historical attempts overcome these barriers and why they failed allowed us to research the possibility of implementing modern technology on previously unsuccessful methods. By modifying some common mining methods, some of these deposits can be mined at only a marginal increase in cost and using readily available equipment. These modified mining methods could make previously underdeveloped deposits to become viable. INTRODUCTION Tabular deposits are defined as orebodies that extend at least hundreds of meters along two dimensions, and a substantially smaller amount along another [1]. Moderately bedded tabular deposits are mined less often than their more horizontal counterparts due to the technical issues they present. These issues often cause lower productivity, higher cost, and more frequent accidents. Moderate dip is a less well defined term; but in this case, it will refer to any deposit which has a dip of at least 20°. This paper will focus on deposits that dip around 25°-50° and are deep enough to require underground excavation methods. These deposits are too steep for most conventional methods yet not steep enough for gravity fed methods to work efficiently. In some cases, this dip range is also referred to as intermediate or steeply dipping. The types of deposits most likely to fall into this category are sedimentary bedded deposits such as coal, trona, evaporates, placers, and other alluvial deposits. Some other types of deposits can fall into this category as well. These include some of the metal reefs such as the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which was deposited by lava flows, but is tabular. Some areas have dips that fall into the moderately inclined category. There are also some metamorphic deposits such as slate or marble that can have dips of more than 20°. The dip angle of these deposits can cause several challenges. Ore movement becomes more difficult as the exceeds the limits of conventional conveyors, rubber-tired, or tracked vehicles. At the same time the dip is below the angle of repose of the material. This prevents gravity assisted haulage, as the ore and waste will not run downhill by itself. Another common problem in moderately inclined underground mines is roof support. The dip angle can increase the risk of pillar and support failure. This is due to slippage between rock layers, non-perpendicular support of the vertical stresses, and slippage of standing supports. The inclination leads to stresses that are not usually found in typical horizontally bedded deposits. These stresses may require larger pillars that may reduce ore recovery below profitable levels."

The effect of various flotation depressants and surface treatments on the floatability of coal derived pyrites in the presence of XIBC was investigated with a modified Hallimond tube microflotation cell. The floatability of pyrite particles which had been cleaned with hot dilute (5%) hydrochloric acid was relatively large. However, the floatability of such particles was reduced greatly by the addition of specific depressants such as calcium hydroxide and also by treating the pyrite with an aerated warm alkaline solution. Although this treatment and these depressants also had some effect on the floatability of coal particles, the effect was much less than on the pyrite particles.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. In no Confederation of Independent States (CIS) country does the mining sector play quite so commanding a role as in the mountainous Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan. Its president, Askar Akayev, says he would like to develop his country into "a Central Asian Switzerland." However, in Switzerland, the gold is largely under the street along Zurich's renowned Bahnhofstrasse. In Kyrgyzstan, though, the gold is still in the mountains. Accordingly, Kyrgyzstan's recent adoption of a comprehensive new mining law has attracted widespread attention. Akayev recently completed a tour of the United States. His visit drew large crowds from the business community at events staged in New York and Washington, DC. The success can be attributed as much to the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan's min¬ing sector as to the personal charms of the nation's president. Led by a half-billion-dollar investment by Canada's uranium giant Cameco, the mining sector is leading Kyrgyzstan's economic revival. And Bishkek is beginning to show some of the same signs of a "boom town" that already mark its Kazak neighbor, Almaty. Mercedes and BMWs already outnumber the Volgas on Bishkek's major traffic arteries. After nearly two years of debates involving government advisors and a final round of deliberation in Parliament, Kyrgyzstan finally adopted its second mining law. This followed quickly in the wake of measures enacted in neighboring Kazakstan and proposed in Russia. Kyrgyzstan's new law replaces the 1992 law "On Mineral Resources." It was one of the first enactments of an independent Kyrgyzstan. The 1992 law made a major contribution to the introduction of free-market economics in the country by ending the state monopoly over mineral exploration and development. It also laid the groundwork for an independent mining industry. According to Kyrgyz government reports, Kyrgyzstan has about 270 commercially viable deposits of almost 40 types of mineral resources. These include oil, gas, coal, precious-, nonferrous-, ferrous-, rare- and basemetals. However, the nation's key draw is gold. Since enactment of the first law, the government has issued more than 100 licenses for geological prospecting for and development of established deposits of gold.
