11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. The current National commitment to expanding the human presence into the solar system will clearly require major facilities in Earth orbit or possibly on the moon. Such facilities will need large amounts of materials for structural modules, life support, propulsion, and shielding. The heavy transportation costs in fuel required to lift materials from the Earth's surface make a terrestrial-based space system inherently inefficient. A more cost-effective approach would be to provide as much of the required materials as possible from other bodies in space not having the high cost of Earth launch. This paper identifies potential targets for space-based resource utilization, constraints on exploitation, and relative benefits of various sources.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project located in Doha Qatar, was designed to collect and manage ground and stormwater and then discharge the treated waters offshore. The project constructed a long outfall tunnel using an EPB TBM with segmental lining, each tunnel ring being 1.35 m in length with an internal diameter of 3.7 m.. The diffuser structure was a 6-arm structure, measuring 294m by 40 m connected to a central manifold in turn connected to the TBM constructed tunnel via a riser shaft drilled from an off-shore barge. This technical paper will discuss the planning, methodology and construction practices employed to connect the TBM tunnel to the diffuser structure 10.2 km offshore.

The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another increasingly common evaluation system for proposed projects is the environmental, social and health impact assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its generally more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluating potential impacts, such as on public health, and other features such as an ecosystem services approach to assessing biophysical and community impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. In this paper, EIA standards for the province of Alberta, Canada are discussed and compared to ESHIA. It concludes with several recommendations for consideration.

The Groveland Mine. Concentrator and Pellet Plant are located in Dickinson County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The construction of the Groveland Mine in 1959 was the first United States operation for the Hanna Mining Company in mining and beneficiating low grade iron formations. (1) The plant produced concentrates at 675,000 lt/yr. (746,600 mt/yr.) which was used as sinter feed in the steel industry from 1959 to 1963. Upon completion of a pelletizing plant in April, 1963 production increased to 1.6 million lt/yr (1.77 million mt/yr) of pellets. After the plant expansion, mill capacity increased to 2.2 million 1t/yr (2.43 million mt/yr.), producing 2.0 million It/yr (2.23. million mt/yr.) of pellets assaying 63.0% iron and 7.0% silica. (1) Prior to April, 1971 the concentrator operated with a flowsheet consisting of spirals and a petroleum sultonate iron notation circuit. This was presented in a paper by R. R. Smith and E. E. Sougstad, "Flotation at the Groveland Mine" in the 50th Anniversary Volume entitled "Froth Flotation". The ore body at the Groveland Mine consists basically of two types of iron formation (34% total iron, 20% magnetic iron head), the most abundant of which is a bedded magnetite-chert-silicate rock. This is intermingled to varying degrees with non-bedded to poorly bedded hematite-clastic quartz-chert rock. (1) In developing the Groveland flowsheet, Humphrey spirals were used because of their ability to produce a coarse size concentrate at a low cost. Tests run in the lab and pilot plant on the Groveland ore showed a. spiral weight recovery in the 27 to 33% range. (2) However as the ore body was opened up, it became evident that the most abundant ore type did not liberate at the coarse size fraction needed for spirals. Plant recoveries for the first five years operating the spirals only averaged from 10 to 15% weight recovery. In 1971 the weight recovery on the spirals had dropped to a low of 5%. To increase iron recovery and at the same time increase plant capacity with the least effect on the present operations the mill flaw-sheet proceeded from a spiral-notation circuit to an all flotation circuit to a magnetic separator-flotation circuit. During this changeover the concentrate grade also had to be improved to meet market demands. To do this the following changes evolved

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with U.S. Borax and Chemical Corporation and the Kennecott Copper Corporation, has investigated the use of the microseismic method to evaluate the stability of large, open-pit slope walls. The method is based on the phenomenon that stressed rock normally emits subaudible rock noises, and the number of rock noises per unit time (noise rate) and the magnitude of the rock noises (amplitude) increase as the stresses in the rock approach the failure stress of the rock. Therefore, the detection and recording of those rock noises serve as a semiquantitative method of predicting the incipient failure of rock. This report briefly describes the three different types of microseismic apparatus, the procedures, and the results of microseismic investigations in the slope walls of the Boron Mine near Boron, California, and the Rimbley, Liberty, and Tripp-Veteran open-pit mines near Ely, Nevada. Microsesimic noise rates in stable inactive mining areas are between 0 and 10 noises/ hour; the rates in stable active mining areas are between 10 and 50 noises/hour; and the rate in unstable areas is as high as 2500 noises/ hour. High microseismic noise rates in the Liberty Pit correlate with the time of nearby earthquakes, indicating that the earthquakes affected the slope wall. The results provide evidence that the microseismic tech¬nique is applicable to large pit walls, and that the wide band, wide range microseismic equipment appears to be suitable for open-pit investigations.

This paper presents the field investigation, field measurement, data analysis, and formulation of fire-extinguishing measures conducted to extinguish the fire from a coal spontaneous combustion incident that occurred in a high-gas coal mine in China.

"He?s an SOB, but he's my SOB." Many of us have heard this line in reference to attorneys, and can appreciate the humor. However, the thought reflects a deeper attitude that lawyers should be used for attack purposes in the legal system or the regulatory process. Often, more permitting progress can be made with tact and flexibility than with inflexible, overly aggressive strategies. Usually, administrative hearings or other litigation work to the disadvantage of the applicant. Thus, I have concerns about approaching any permitting system with a hard-line attitude. On the other hand, the project team must always be prepared to defend permit applications and present a legally adequate case at public meetings, administrative hearings, or judicial proceedings. This paper discusses a number of strategies intended to increase the probabilities for successful permitting, whether opposition is informal or highly organized.

Blasthole sampling practices were investigated at the Erdenet copper and molybdenum mine in Mongolia to address grade reconciliation issues. The goal of the study was to determine if the particle size distribution (PSD) of blasthole cuttings was accurately reflected in the samples. The study additionally examined if the measured grade was related to the particle size of samples. Using a sector sampler specifically designed to collect samples for the study, six large samples were collected from three blocks following a specialized protocol. Each sample was split into nine size fractions, ranging from larger than 12 mm to smaller than 63 µm. Copper and molybdenum grades were determined for each of the size fractions. For comparison, nine samples were collected from the same blocks following the standard mine sampling protocol. These samples were also split into the same nine size fractions. As with the other samples, grades were determined for each of the size fractions. The results showed that the PSD in the samples collected following the standard operating procedure varied significantly from sample to sample. This variation was much lower for the samples collected following the specialized protocol. Loss of fines was also indicated in the standard mine sampling process. These observations suggest that the standard sampling protocol did not consistently capture the PSD. The copper and molybdenum grades increased as particle size decreased, regardless of the sampling protocol used. This observation underscores the importance of the PSD of a sample being representative of the true PSD. Given the low number of samples in the study, it is not a strong conclusion that the standard sampling protocol captures the PSD inconsistently. However, it could be taken as a caution. On the other hand, the grade versus PSD relationship is more certain, given that it was observed regardless of the sampling method used.

Computer programs developed as part of the PROSPECTOR project at SRI International can indicate where the highest grade hypogene copper occurs in porphyry copper prospects. The programs are useful in selecting drilling targets in untested porphyry deposits. Because of mineralogic, structural and lithologic variations in porphyry-type deposits, three distinct computer programs have been constructed; however, this paper considers only the stockwork type in homogeneous rock (similar to the Lowell and Guilbert model). The programs represent models in the form of inference networks that utilize the mineralogic, alteration, lithologic, structural, geochemical and geophysical data normally collected prior to a drilling decision. One example of an application of the PROSPECTOR program for a stockwork-homogeneous porphyry is given: Island Cooper in British Columbia. Computations based on the surface geologic, geochemical and geophysical data for Island Copper clearly disclose the best hypogene grade of the deposit. Other deposits were tested in the programs as well, and in each case PROSPECTOR programs indicate the region with the highest hypogene grade.

The continuous balling? operation whereby a moist particulate mass is tumbled in a horizontal revolving drum with recirculation of the undersize product can be extremely unstable. Product and recycle rates are subject to wide fluctuations. Although the problem seems to be well-recognized, there is little published information or quantitative data readily available, especially in relation to industrial-scale circuits. Probably the best available published results are in the Russian literature, an illustration of which is given in Figure 1. These data, taken from a study') of some of the factors which influence the stabilization of the pelletizing process, illustrate the wide variations in circulating load and circuit productivity which may be encountered over a period of operation. The problems of balling circuit stability may be traced to random seed or nuclei generation and uncontrolled agglomerate growth. The situation is analogous to that in crystallization processes where (4 considerable attention is given to nucleation control. In November 1980 a combined airborne electro-magnetic (INPUT.) and magnetometer survey was conducted by Questor Surveys Limited in the State Line Area, Colorado-Wyoming. The survey was the result of discussions over a prolonged period between the authors and various investigators of the State kimberlite occurrences. As a result of these discussions and literature studies, it was decided that airborne geophysical methods would be potentially useful in the exploration for new kimberlite occurrences. The survey was designed by Paterson, Grant and Watson Limited and conducted by Questor Surveys Limited over an area in which more than 15 kimberlite bodies were known and on some of which ground geophysical surveys had been conducted. The survey was designed primarily to determine the airborne electromagnetic and magnetic responses of the known occurrences and to deter- mine whether these responses would be detectable under similar conditions in other parts of the State Line District and elsewhere.

The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium, and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. [Table 1] affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak- type brines, produced mainly for lithium. MARKET ATTRIBUTES Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are: 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities. 8. Purchases are generally by contract of one year or longer term, with spot buying playing only a minor role. 9. Contract prices are usually fixed in short term commitments, but may vary according to assay, with premiums and penalties for content above or below the norm; however, general practice is for specifications to be fixed in the contract with minimums being set for the desired material and maximums for undesired elements. In longer term contracts, prices are often escalated on labor, fuel, and other vendor processing costs. 10. Suppliers of individual commodities to the chemical industry tend to be limited in number and are generally medium- to large-size producers that supply a few major consumers. 11. The bulk of the mineral volume is for basic chemical uses, sulfur suppliers to sulfuric acid producers and fluorspar for hydrofluoric acid producers being typical examples. These basic chemical products then are used for the production of other products. 12. Shortage of a supply of adequate quality leads consumers to seek substitutes. In the case of fluorspar, much work is being done on recovery of fluorine from phosphate rock. Success in the form of fluorosilicic acid and/or hydrofluoric acid production could, in time, affect the hydrofluoric acid chemical industry. 13. Markets tend to be characterized by cycles of shortage followed by oversupply, with attendant wide price fluctuations. 14. Baniers to trade can have an adverse effect on the necessary movement of industrial minerals used by the chemical industry in international trade. Antidumping laws, quotas, and tariffs can disrupt or dislocate normal markets. 15. Chemical industry consumers may back-integrate for security of supply or for favorable economics, sometimes by joint ownership and often with experienced mining partners.

A naturally aged and synthesized manganese oxide-coated granular media was found in our laboratory to have the capability of the removal of soluble Mn(H) from mine drainage by adsorption and oxidation. Mine drainage commonly also includes other heavy metal ions. Extending this principle, this paper presents the removal of heavy metals including lead, copper, cobalt, zinc and nickel in the aqueous solution by using the synthesized manganese oxide-coated granular media. It was found that the adsorption of lead, copper, cobalt, zinc and nickel on the manganese oxide-coated media follows both Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherms except in the concentration range less than 0.1 mmole/L. The adsorption mechanism involves the ion exchange between the heavy metal ions and synthesized manganese oxide coated on the media. The synthetic manganese oxide surface has a strong metal binding ability to the heavy metals in the order of Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Zn2+ > C02+ based on the adsorption results using batch and continuous column operations. The breakthrough curves of these heavy metals showed that the synthesized media could be used effectively in the removal of these heavy metal ions in a cell or packed column. The process can simultaneously facilitate the immobilization of the heavy metals on the synthesized manganese oxide coated media. A subsequent pH adjustment dislodges the heavy metals and regenerates the synthetic media. Thus, the process accomplishes the adsorption, immobilization and concentration of the heavy metal from waste stream in one monolithic procedure.

Construction of a major linear project in any environment is difficult, at best. Construction of a major linear project which includes major subway elements, both cut and cover and tunneling, in the center of an urban environment, approaches the impossible. I believe such a project would be impossible for a private company or a privately owned utility for a variety of reasons. The major two reasons are the funding necessary for such massive projects and the myriad of individual interests associated with private ownership of land. Such projects are possible in the public sector only because the need for the project... as is the case with mass transportation in Atlanta. . .overrides the profit motive. Without the profit motive, private companies, whether utilities or not, are precluded from practical interest in the development of any project. While it is safe to conclude that a profit-oriented business would have no practical interest in developing such massive projects as may include major tunnels, it would be useful, I think, to compare some of the significant differences between private profit-oriented businesses, and an agency, or Authority, such as MARTA, in building a major linear project. For over 100 years Degussa has worked together with the min­ing industry not only providing quality products but also develop­ing technologies to support these products through value added goods and services. For cyanide, these technologies include leach enhancement processes such as PAL™ and Solidox™, and cyanide detoxification with peroxygen based processes such as SILOX™ and Caro's acid using our DegOX™ technology. Degussa has also made important advances in how sodium cyanide is packaged and shipped with our liquid NaCN plant joint venture with MSI, CYANCO in Winnemucca, Nevada, and our Advantage SLS™ solid to liquid cyanide delivery system. All of these innovative technologies developed to support NaCN in mining, provide value to our customers and show Degussa's commitment to Responsible Care·11.1 and dedication to product stewardship. With Responsible Care and the customer in mind, Degussa has developed Advantage CCS™ cyanide control system, which will soon be available for the North American market. Currently there are several CCS units in service installed by Degussa AG (Germany), and we are in the process of designing the next gen­eration of the CCS which should be completed by late '98. Based on our experience working with gold and silver mines all over the world, there appeared to be an opportunity to further assist our customers by providing a better more automated way to control their cyanide additions. By providing the mine with an accurate method for maintaining their desired cyanide levels in their leach circuits, we could help them avoid underdosing and the associated gold and silver losses, and overdosing the cyanide which not only wastes cyanide but may increase treatment costs as well. In the early 1990's, when we began to introduce our CCS units, there were several cyanide controllers and on-line analyzers avail­able. However, they appeared to be too complicated and not made to stand the harsh conditions inside a mill. This resulted in exces­sive downtime and poor analytical results. We also found that many units would be installed but not commissioned by the sup­plier. Based on these observations, along with filtration and con­trol problems on some existing units, Degussa decided to design its own cyanide control system based on our extensive knowledge of cyanide chemistry, using the best components available worldwide.

The dissolution process of phosphate rock from the Semikan area (Mardin-Mazidagi, Turkey) using dilute phosphoric acid has been investigated. The work involved studying the effect of important variables, such as reaction time, stirring speed, particle size fraction, phosphoric acid concentration and temperature. Van der Sluis et al.?s model was used to determine the rate of the partial dissolution of phosphate ore. Mass-transfer coefficients (kL) varied between 2.8 and 28.5.10-3 m.s-1. The activation energy of the process varied between 16 and 20 kJ.mol-1. It has been found that the dissolution process is controlled by calcium ion diffusion, rather than by chemical reaction.

Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

Current coal cleaning technology uses heavy media (HM) for the recovery of coal in particles larger than 1/16 of an inch. Through the use of float sink measurements of the feed and products to commercial HM unit operations, a selection function, sometimes called Tromp curve in the coal industry, can be computed. Since the selection function is a plot f the probability of a particle appearing in the float versus the particle density, the slope of the curve will be sharper at the point where the particle has a 50% chance f appearing in the float. Thus, the separation will be better. Fine-tuning a unit operation or a circuit of unit operations requires that the selection function be accurately known. By current practice, it is difficult to obtain an accurate measure of the slope because, when the selection function is plotted versus density, the data forms an S-shaped curve which lacks data points near the 505 point of the curve. This lack of sensitivity in measuring the slope means that small recovery improvements cannot be detected; thus, only large improvements are measurable. Since most engineering improvements are small when individually considered, but large when aggregated ever many small improvements, this lack of measurement sensitivity rules out the slew march toward improved efficiency. This paper presents a method of analyzing heavy media selection functions resulting in a far more effective measure of the selective function slope. Furthermore, this improved method is applied to a number of industrial coal cleaning plants for both heavy media and heavy media cyclones.
