PDMI mines five different grades of ore. Shovel operators were experiencing problems differentiating one material type from another. In 1997 PDMI decided to try GPS ore control to aid operators in identifying material boundaries. Computer generated ore control maps and GPS data defining the shovels' position is fed to a computer on board the shovel. A monitor, located near the shovel operator, displays material types, their boundaries, and the shovels' position and movement in relation to the mining face. This information has reduced errors in material identification by 50%.

Structured or embossed HDPE and LLDPE geomembranes have been available to mine owners and designers for over ten (10) years. As many owners and designers discover and demand the consistent high quality characteristics of this type of geomembrane due to the unique manufacturing process, the use of these materials in new mines, mine expansions and final closure designs has steadily increased. Structured liner materials are available for double lined and final cover systems and are revolutionizing the way ponds, pads and final closures are constructed. This paper will discuss the structured or embossed geomembrane concept and manufacturing process. Additionally, the paper will present comparative testing illustrating the major advantages of using this type of product in these types of applications. Both technical and economic advantages are illustrated. The cost savings include lower installation costs, less material used, and third party inspection times not to mention better performance. These new systems will be presented.

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. "The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

In recent years, market rates of interest have risen well above their historical long-term average. Also during this period, the short-term variability of interest rates has been greater than in prior years. Interest rates have a significant effect on the operation of our economy. They influence the extractive industries in a number of ways. Their major long- range impact is on investment decisions - specifically the valuation of mineral deposits. An understanding of the factors that influence interest rates is important to the engineer or businessman who makes the investment decisions for the mining company. The effect of changes in the market rate of interest on the value of mineral reserves is critical to the future financial success of the mining enterprise. The most common simplification of the factors determining the level of interest rates is that they are a function of the demand for and the supply of money. While this is an oversimplification, most businessmen would be hard- pressed to provide a better explanation. The purpose of this paper is to explore certain fundamental economic aspects of interest rates and to examine their effect on the analysis of investment in mineral deposits.

The Montana Operations of the Anaconda Company constitute an integrated, though geographically separated, non-ferrous metal production complex. The mines are located at Butte and consist of one large open-pit mine, two small underground mines, a precipitation plant for both underground and pit-dump leach water, and the Weed Copper Concentrator. The smelter, located at Anaconda, Montana 25 miles to the west, processes all Butte copper shipments as well as copper materials from both Anaconda and private mines. Copper and zinc are refined at Great Falls, Montana, 165 miles to the north. Other facilities developed over the years include the Anaconda Forest Products Division, the Butte, Anaconda, and Little. Chicago Water Companies, and the Montana Hardware Company. Data processing for these operations has been performed on an IBM 360 Series, Model 30 computer, utilizing a Disc Operating System. This was replaced in September 1970 with a 360 Series, Model 40 128K unit. In addition, some data processing is also done for Anaconda Company operations located at Britannia Beach, British Columbia; Columbia Falls, Montana; Yerington, Nevada; and Twin Buttes and Tuscon, Arizona. The material under discussion in this paper will be concerned primarily with the mining operations at Butte.

Fortunately, few mining professionals have dealt with what all mining professionals fear---a mine disaster. Unfortunately, many have dealt with ?accidents? which may or may not claim lives but nevertheless rise to the level of a ?disaster? given the fallout of liability and litigation in today?s society.1 The undersigned authors published an article some ten years ago regarding crisis management2 based upon their collective first-hand experiences in actual disasters to that point in history. Unfortunately, disasters have occurred since that time, prompting legislation, and a fresh analysis and expansion of those basic principles is certainly in order. Without question, no two disasters are ever alike, yet general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action can be formulated?and if a mining operation is to have any chance of survival after a disaster, such a plan is vital. The primary concern as any disaster evolves remains as stated a 2003 SME article3--the protection of human life. From that point, the focus moves to any assistance that may be needed given the magnitude of the situation. Permeating throughout this process is "damage control." The first step in dealing with a disaster, however, begins long before any threat of danger arises?formulation and implementation of an Emergency Response Plan.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project (MPSO) is in Doha Qatar. This technical paper will discuss and explain the three major stages of geotechnical investigation employed. Stage one the tender geotechnical data and how this was used to design the TBM and identify various areas of risk. Stage two was the selection of supplementary geotechnical investigation methodologies. Stage three was the geotechnical investigation by specialist equipment installed on the TBM and providing further data on a real time basis as the TBM was advancing. Analysis of all the data will be provided along with the lessons learned.

Detailed mapping, using a large diameter diamond-drill in conjunction with high resolution reflection seismics, has increased known resources of kaolin clay and glass-grade silica sand from scattered deposits generally < 1 km2 to large areas of Cretaceous valley fill up to 130 m thick. Detailed chemical and physical analysis of drill core is presently underway. Silica sand deposits intersected in this study are up to 99.4 % SiO2 without beneficiation. Light grey to white kaolin clays identified by XRD and DT A have concentrations values (without beneficiation) up to 47.28% SiO2, 37.44% Al2O3, 0.45% Fe2O3, 0.49% K2O, 0.07% Nap, 0.07% CaO and 0.39% MgO.

The combination of high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) image analysis and Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) simulations has demonstrated the ability to describe real multiphase flow problems in fine coal filtration. The single component multiphase flow He-Chen-Zhang LBM model was used to simulate filtration with actual HRXMT images of pore network structures produced in filtration experiments. The analysis performed on coal, silica, and glass bead filter cakes showed that particle shape and wettability are two of the most important factors in the retention of moisture during filtration.

The New York Trap Rock Corporation has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. The company produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, with a total annual production amounting to 6 million tons. The crushed stone is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey and Long island areas by water transportation. There are daily deliveries of approximately 35 scowloads to the market area. Its customers are contractors with ready-mixed concrete and asphalt plants located on the water, where the aggregate is unloaded for its ultimate use. For a number of years capital equipment was replaced only when the current operating machinery was no longer serviceable, or when&apos; a need was apparent for a different type of equipment. There was no particular regard for efficiency or for operating and maintenance costs. Such lack of system often resulted in the emergency purchase of equipment which was later found to be unsuitable for the job. A few years ago it became apparent that a systematic procedure was necessary. After evaluation of several systems, an individualized plan was evolved from the basic pattern developed by the Machinery and Allied Products Institute. The system adopted by New York Trap Rock has proved wholly satisfactory.

Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine mesh screens is discussed. High frequency, low amplitude, fine mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with &apos;hot ferric chloride to remove Pb and Cu contaminates before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

Congress, under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended, charged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the responsibility for safe and permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste in a geologic repository. The waste will consist of spent fuel from commercial nuclear generating plants and reprocessing activities. Under direction of this law DOE is currently evaluating Yucca Mountain in Southern Nevada as the candidate site for a potential high-level radioactive waste repository. Presidential, Congressional and State of Nevada approval are needed for repository construction to proceed after successful completion of site characterization and recommendation of the site to Congress. The DOE will submit a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to construct the geologic repository. Following successful construction DOE will update its license application to operate the repository.

AngloGold Ashanti operates the world`s deepest mine, Mponeng gold mine, in South Africa. A vast refrigeration and ventilation system provides acceptable working conditions 3800m below surface at 60°C rock temperature. In such a system, optimisation and assessment of modifications becomes very difficult. With that in mind, a research project was launched to determine whether recently developed system simulation technology can be applied to a mine as vast and complex as Mponeng. Using the techniques and methods as implemented in FLOWNEX software, it was indeed proven to be possible to do a mine-wide combined simulation of compressed air flow, ventilation air psychrometry and refrigeration water systems. Interactions between the various streams included heat transfer, pressure drop, evaporation and condensation. The simulation model was used in a parametric study to test various water flow and temperature operating points for the refrigeration system. It was found that, given current limitations, the mine refrigeration system is running fairly close to optimal but with some opportunities for improvement. The simulation model also provided useful insight for future changes or extensions to the system.

Every year the United States consumes millions of dollars worth of abrasive materials as blasting media. Entrained in either a gas or liquid stream or propelled by paddles or wheels, they are directed onto the surface of another material to modify that surface. The modifications to impacted surfaces include cleaning, cutting, deburring, etching, finishing, and peening. Blasting media can be either organic or mineral abrasive materials. Information and data presented are for only a portion of the mineral abrasives, they are; fused aluminum oxide, coal slag, copper slag, garnet, metallic shot and grit, nickel slag, olivine, silica sand, silicon carbide, and staurolite.

We applied kriging (geostatistics) to interpret the structure of basement rock in Yucca Flat, NTS from borehole data. The estimation error for 118 data is 81 m comparable with those based on both gravity and borehole data. Using digitized topographic data, we tested the kriging results and found that the model validation process (Thomas option) on data gave a fair representation of the overall uncertainty of the kriged values.

PREFACE Debris disposal can very often be a severe problem and major restriction on tunnel boring projects, especially for small diameter tunnels and in underground mines. Hydraulic transport could provide a suitable solution. Investigations have therefore been made in connection with a full-scale project of 4.8 km length and 2,3 m diameter, to obtain the required technical and economical data for planning an optimized transport system, e.g. for a tunnel boring drivage of 6 - 7 m diameter in underground coal mines. INTRODUCTION The Radau-Tunnel, chosen for the investigations, has been designed for transferring flood peaks between the rivers Radau and Grosse Romke in the Harz-Mountain of Lower Saxony. A DEMAG TVM 20/23 H tunnel boring machine was used to drive the tunnel on a rising gradient of 0,53 %. The rock consisted of shale and hornblende (55 %), granite (15 %), diabase (15 %), chert (8 %) and gabbro (7 %). The project has been sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology.

Real option value (ROV) method is considered to be more practical and advanced compared to net present value (NPV) method in evaluating a mining project, in particularly when there is substantial uncertainty in the commodity market as well as possible operational flexibility embedded in the project. Usually, it may take months or even years for the commodity product to be available in the market after the mining activation decision is made. The impacts of postponing the delivery of commodity product on the mine?s ROV and NPV are assessed based on the proposed real option method. Postponing the delivery of the products leads to declined NPV and ROV compared to the non-postponing scenario and extended postpone results in higher lost values in NPV and ROV. For a mine with lower mining cost, by postponing the delivery, the exercising threshold of commodity price is lower because the mine owner anticipates that commodity price may rise during the time of postponing. A mine with higher mining cost requires a higher exercising price threshold to ?lock up? the profit when there is ambiguity of market situation due to the postponing of the delivery.

Within the investigation works for the Copenhagen Cityring metro, Geo/CMT have carried out 90 geotechnical boreholes. Together with the previously available investigation, this resulted in more than 15 km of vertical drillings and several thousands of laboratory tests. The design is made for 17 stations, four shafts and two parallel 16 km long tunnels. The geotechnical investigation and design have been carried out in several stages comprising appropriate refinement of structural design and design of excavation operations, including TBM break-in and launching operations at each station shaft. Acceptance of the solution and / or refinement of the investigation and design schedule in the next stage were based on the geological conditions, area availability at surface level, planning and cost-control criteria. The applied recursive design refinement is presented herein with an example of the Østersøgade shaft location.

To increase zinc recovery in the concentrate, this investigation performed mineralogical characterization, dispersion studies, bench and pilot-scale flotation experiments and an industrial flotation trial. The objective was to verify the flotation behavior of the silicate zinc ore (calamine type) in the presence of slimes, with the aid of dispersing agents. Characterization studies identified the major minerals in the flotation feed as hemimorphite (calamine), quartz and dolomite. Dispersion tests showed that enhanced dispersion of the particles in the pulp in the absence of reagents occured at a pH range between 8.5 and 12.0. Bench-scale flotation experiments were planned using the statistical tool of complete factorial design at two levels, replicated once. These experiments showed, and were confirmed at the pilot-plant scale, that higher doses of sodium sulfide and polymeric dispersant combined with sodium silicate favored a higher metallurgical recovery. At 6,800 g/t (218 oz/st) sodium sulfide and 6,992 g/t (224 oz/st) polymeric dispersing agent combined with sodium silicate, a zinc grade of 38.4% in the final concentrate was achieved, at an average metallurgical recovery of 72.4%. The industrial trial confirmed the pilot scale results, leading to zinc recovery of 76.1% and a 37.3% zinc grade in the concentrate.
