An upgrade to Vale?s existing Clarabelle dual-pinion, semiautogenous (SAG) mill was completed by the power and automation technology company, ABB. The mill is used to reduce the size of the ore at the company?s nickel and copper mines in the Sudbury area. The project was completed on time and on budget with an excellent safety record. Located in Ontario about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto, Vale?s Sudbury operations are primarily underground nickel sulfide mines, with integrated mining, milling, smelting and refining operations. One of the characteristics of Clarabelle Mill is to accept nickel-copper ore from various sources and companies and to produce a nickel-copper concentrate and copper concentrate for further processing. The size of the ore is further reduced in SAG mills, rod mills and ball mills, where all milling is done wet.

United States Antimony Corporation, at its Yankee Fork property in central Idaho, is currently using a combination of flotation, gravity-amalgamation, and concentrate cyanide leaching, silver sulfide precipitation, and activated charcoal loading to recover both silver and gold. Tine processes of flotation, milling, gravity concentration, amalgamation, concentrate leaching, sulfide precipitation and gold recovery via charcoal are discussed. The flow sheet illustrates the use of cyanidation as an alternative to shipment to a smelter.

When reading different studies discussing trends in coal mining, it appears that a substantial expansion of output by the year 2000 is predicted, even in the most pessimistic forecasts. Depletion of shallow, easy-to-mine deposits is only a matter of time, and the future average mining depth will increase. The proportion of slope to shaft mines operated during the next decades will change in favor of the shaft mines. Since an increasing amount of shafts in new nine developments seems to be inevitable, it appears appropriate to focus more attention on shaft design criteria. Some valuable papers have recently been published (1) that emphasize geotechnical aspects of shaft design. In the discussion that follows some other aspects of design criteria will be evaluated.

The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

The engineering company's participation in quality assurance in the mining industry is twofold. Not only must it have such a program to ensure the necessary high standards for its own design and construction of a minerals processing plant, but it is also responsible as the "engineer" for both the selection and the quality of purchased equipment which goes into that plant. It is in this latter role that the engineer finds the most difficulty, or controversy, since while it is relatively easy to control his own performance, this is not ncessarily so when dealing with companies, all with their own ideas or standards. The engineer has perhaps rather reluctantly become more involved with the quality assurance of purchased equipment. This is because he has been used to writing performance type specifications and expecting the equipment manufacturer to provide the degree of quality, and control of that quality, for the product to meet the specified operating conditions. However, this has sometimes placed the manufacturer in a difficult position since to remain competitive in today's market conditions, he cannot always insist on product improvements or options which may in the long run be vital to reliable operation of the equipment.

The effect of reaction conditions on the desulphurization of oil sand coke residues has been studied. The variables investigated were temperature, reaction time, heat transfer resistance, and mode of caustic soda addition. The results obtained show that oil sand coke desulphurization increases with temperature, reaction time, and heat transfer rate. In an oxidative environment, coke combustion during molten caustic leaching (MCL) commences at temperatures above 500°C. The mode of caustic addition has no effect on coke desulphurization.

In the present work compared flotation kinetics of apatite with four different collectors was established. Sodium oleate and rice bra~ oil were used to represent conventional collectors. The new collectors included a sulfosuccinate and a sulfosuccinamate. It was observed that the collection ability of each reagent was very dependent upon the mineral size ranges. The results-were analyzed in terms of size-by-size recovery curves. Flotation rates were also very dependent on size ranges of the mineral particles. One of the new collectors displayed higher flotation rates for coarser particles than the other reagents tested. Synergetic effects were also apparent when a conventional collector was mixed to a new collector.

Canada has been a producer of sulphur in various forms for about 100 years, Pyrites, as a source of sulphur dioxide for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, were being mined in the 1860's. Smelter gas, for the same purpose, has been recovered since 1928. Between 1935 and 1943, and from 1952 to the present, elemental sulphur has been produced in Canada from two raw material sources and by several methods. This paper attempts to present a view of the current status of the elemental sulphur industry in Canada based on the sour gas fields of Alberta and British Columbia. Production from this source has increased rapidly in the past 12 years to make Canada one of the major sulphur producers of the world. The present industry in Canada relies mainly on sour gas sulphur and it is expected that it will continue to grow in the future. However, before describing current activity relating to sour gas it may be of interest to outline briefly the early pyrite activities, the roots of the sulphur industry in Canada.

As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using crosslinked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganrte, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The iminodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pryolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethano lamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating cross- linked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dupersing agent.

Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterizations of gold ores. However, this is not a simple tusk due to low gold grade, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. Using the same sections of a gold-rich ore, a critical test was performed using an optical microscope (OM) and an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences, such as the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM. The Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area was deleted from the list of US Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the US Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found indications of precious- and base-metal-resources. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most of which were previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak mining district to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz and calcite with gold, silver, and base-metals. At the surface, these veins are poorly defined. Exposures of the more than forty veins examined were as thick as 17 ft and as long as 1000 ft. Samples from these veins contained significant amounts of precious- and base-metals-as much as 0.02 oz per ton gold, 2.1 oz per ton silver, 1.0% copper, 2.6% lead and 0.4 % zinc. No vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource was disclosed by the sample data. However, most do have indications of precious- and base-metal-resources at depth. Subsurface exploration of some of the veins is recommended.

Modern surface mining operations are always seeking for minimizing costs while increasing production rates, among the optimization of other specific tasks that have an impact on the economics of the mine. Specifically, the cost related to the production fleet operation (shovels and trucks), the maximization of the overall performance of the equipment, and the uncertainty to meet the goals at the end of the operational time horizon are always topics of discussion with no apparent simple answer. On the other hand, truck-shovel dispatch systems based on Linear/Non-Linear Programming Algorithms have been in operation since mid-1990’s with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine, but having in most cases some important shortcomings related to the way these systems deal with the decision making of the operational objectives, being necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. This paper discusses the implementation of a novel methodology based on AI techniques to assist in the decision making of the best goal selection when operating a Fleet Management System, taking into consideration time periods as variables and integrating them as part of the analysis, providing a better overview of the forecast plan completion with respect to previous production numbers and evaluating best alternative to handle future events to minimize losses or maximize profits, resulting in better truck assignments, minimum shovel idle times and overall productivity improvements of the operation at the end of the time horizon.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low-and high-rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

The U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) is currently conducting a national program to survey for uranium the conterminous United States and Alaska by 1980 using airborne and surface techniques. This paper discusses the techniques used and some of the results of airborne surveys conducted to date by Geodata International, Inc. Airborne gamma radiation and the earth's magnetic field data are measured to provide data leading to regions potentially more favorable for the exploration and discovery of uranium ore. High-sensitivity radiometric and magnetic field data have been gathered from an aircraft with an average surface altitude of 400 feet (Figure 1). Under most conditions, data are usable up to an aircraft surface elevation of about 1250 feet where limitations will be discussed. Results of data analysis under GJO-1632, GJ0-1644, GJO-1654 and GJO-1663 will be discussed.

This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.
