An ultrasonic, pulse-immersion apparatus and method are described for determining the effects of moisture on the dynamic elastic properties of rock. The method provides an alternative approach for assessing the moisture sensitivity of rocks. Ultrasonic wave velocities are continuously monitored in immersed rock samples as a function of water absorption and time up to saturation. Moisture effects on compressional wave velocity vary as a function of the type of rock and the time and amount of water absorption. Regression analyses are used to curve-fit plots of the data and to derive empirical expressions for compressional wave velocity as a function of water content for different categories of rock. Results indicate that compressional wave velocity can be used to predict both the moisture content and its effect on strength and deformational properties of rock. These results have potential for detecting or monitoring bad roof conditions in situations where the mine rock exhibits strength degradation with moisture absorption.

Mill length was the primary variable investigated in an autogenous pilot mill circuit. The 5-1/2' diameter mill had both pebble ports and 1/2" wide slotted grates. The plus 1/2" mill product was crushed in a cone crusher and returned to the mill feed along with the minus 1/2" plus 4 or 6 mesh fraction. Tests were run with a short mill, inside length of 26-3/8", or diameter-to-length ratio of 2.50 to 1. The same mill was then lengthened to 48-3/8", diameter-to-length ratio of 1.36 to 1. The effect of mill length on circuit product characteristics was studied. Results show that (1) circuit throughput or grinding rate is lower per foot of mill length in the longer mill, (2) the long mill product is finer than the short mill product, and (3) KWH per ton of circuit product is slightly higher with the longer mill; however, KWH per ton of minus 200 mesh material (finer fraction) produced is essentially the same in the long mill as the short mill, It is not known whether the relationships found for the pilot mill are valid for commercial size mills.

A mining company plans to extend its surface coal-mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accountings for the site shows an overall Neutralization Potential to Maximum Potential Acidity Ratio (NP:MPA) of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to be mined. If traditional dragline-mining methods are used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. To prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using truck-shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, amine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Therefore, mining this site should not result in the formation of AMD.

Improved liberation and flotation of kerogen from eastern oil shale were accomplished with high-temperature grinding and a1 so with the addition of fuel oil during the grinding stage. Liberation measurements indicated that possible coalescence and aggregation phenomenon of kerogen particles during grinding may reflect this behavior. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment of the rougher concentrate prior to cleaning improved the quality of separation.

This paper describes uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide and sulfide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance; however, the nature of the heterogenious reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring of sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. A review of recent studies shows that sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps can be monitored and hence the optimum dosage controlled using the platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes. The use of these electrodes for improved reproducibility of bench-scale experimental data and plant implementation of laboratory results is described.

The Authors compiled a dataset of projects constructed in the Toronto Area between 1990–2020 procured either Design-Build or Design-Bid-Build. Data were analyzed identifying independent cost variables across the two methods. Overall industry efficiency further comparison with historical information demonstrates the costs of engineering ongoing escalation due to rising trends in environmental requirements and public consultations stirred through modern communicative platforms. These hard to predict and estimate costs need to be included in the risks evaluated and managed by Owners and not by Contractors

The purpose of these opening remarks is to establish a viewpoint, which will form part of the basis for later discussion between panel members and between the panel and the audience. Important issues will be identified. These ideas in the form of questions and answers, hopefully, will provide the necessary background for the ensuing dialogue. Is There An Urgency? We do not believe there is the urgency for immediate control legislation that has been depicted by some Congressional sources, environmental groups, and certain segments of the press. Emissions of sulfur oxides in the United States have decreased 15% during the 19701s, even though the use of coal by electrical utility power plants increased nearly 80%. That trend will continue as the older plants are phased out of operation and are replaced with newer plants, which must meet the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) requiring the use of "scrubbers" to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 70% or 90%. The present Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, by allowing the logical progression of economic events- -depreciation, retirement, replacement, and growth--will produce approximately a 50 % reduction in SOX emissions by the year 2015.

Arizona copper mines produced nearly 67% of the nation?s copper in 2000, according to a report released by the Arizona Mining Association (AMA). This was a slightly larger share than in 2000 despite large reductions by one major copper producer and production cutbacks at several other facilities. In 1999, Arizona mines produced 64% of the nation?s copper. The report was prepared by economist George F. Leaming of the Western Economic Analysis Center in Marana, AZ. It also showed the copper industry had a $4.6-billion impact on the Arizona economy in 2000, a 26%decline from 1999. This is the lowest financial impact since 1973 and less than half the record reached in 1981of $9.6 billion. The decline is primarily due to a sustained low copper price and a slow-down in the US economy. The mining industry?s impact included combined direct and indirect contributions of $1.283 billion in personal income for Arizona residents, the equivalent of 43,000jobs. More than 5,000 of those jobs were in state and local government and more than 18,000 were in trade and ser-vice businesses. The copper industry directly employed fewer than 8,000 people statewide in 2000. This was down about 23% from 1999.

Introduction Occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) in mafic and ultramafic rocks in association with Cu-Ni mineralization are well known. Yet for the Duluth Complex, a large body of dominantly mafic igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota with significant Cu-Ni mineralization (Bonnichsen, 1972; Boucher, 1975; Watowich, 1978; Weiblen and Morey, 1980), little has been published concerning its platinum group element (PGE) contents and mineralogy. In a previous study of massive sulfide rock, sperrylite (PtAs2) was found in nickel arsenide and recovery of arsenide minerals by flotation has been investigated (Iwasaki et al., 1986; Ryan and Weiblen, 1984). Recently, an announcement was made of the discovery of significant quantities of platinum and palladium [peak assay values of 9 g/t (0.27 oz per st)] in an interval of a drill core with disseminated sulfide mineralization 16 km (10 miles) southeast of Ely, MN (Anon, 1985; Sabelin, 1985). This paper describes PGM from the Pt-Pd-enriched zone and evaluates their potential for concentration. Geologic setting The Pt-Pd zone occurs in the South Kawishiwi in¬trusion near its basal contact at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth. The South Kawishiwi is one of several minor mafic intrusions that constitute the western margin of the Duluth Complex near Ely, MN (Fig. 1). It is com¬prised of a 70.1- to 350.5-m (230- to 1150-ft) thick sul¬fide-bearing basal unit of troctolite with minor amounts of anorthosite, norite, picrite, and oxide layers overlain by a troctolite unit with interlayered anorthosite (Bonnichsen et al., 1980; Foose, 1984; and Foose and Weiblen, 1986). The basal unit, in which the Pt-Pd zone is found, is markedly heterogeneous in rock type, lacking any coherent internal stratigraphy, and shows evidence of both pre- and post-consolidation faulting (Foose and Weiblen, 1986). Geochemistry Chemical analyses were made on 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals of crushed drill core material (1/4 core, BX size) at 731.5 to 740.7 m (2400 to 2430 ft) depth and the results are presented in Fig. 2. The analytical techniques used were atomic absorption spectrometry for silver, chromium, copper, and nickel; a coulometric titration method for sulfur; and a combined fire assay-DC plasma technique for gold, palladium, and platinum. Figure 2 shows the significant enrichment of platinum and palladium at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth; it corresponds to a stratigraphic interval rich in oxide minerals. Average values for platinum and palladium contents over the 3-m (10-ft) interval are 2520 and 2580 ppb, respectively, or 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) platinum plus palladium. Platinum plus palladium contents from individual 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals are as high as 9120 ppb or 9.1 g/t (0.27 oz per st) and average 7.4 g/t (0.22 oz per st) in a 1.5-m (5-ft) interval in the richest part of the zone. The Pt-to-Pd ratio is nearly 1:1 over the entire 9.1-m (30-ft) interval and the platinum and palladium correlate closely with chromium, which ranges from 1.9% to 5.3%. Copper, nickel, and sulfur contents for the drill core interval are also given in Fig. 2. In¬terestingly, the Pt-Pd high corresponds to a depletion in copper, nickel, and sulfur. A NIOSH study on occupational deaths between 1980 and 1989 indicated that in the United States, mining had the highest average annual fatality rate (3 1.9 per 100,000 workers) of any other major industry. Since "lack of training" was often cited as the primary cause of accidents, NIOSH has been investigating new methods for effective training. One such method is the use of low- cost, desktop computers to simulate a virtual mining environment. Computer-based training offers several advantages over conventional training because the computer programs provide a three- dimensional environment that allows the trainee to practice using evacuation routes, encounter mining hazards, and view mining operations without being exposed to any real danger. One major focus of the project is mine escapeway multiuser training using desktop virtual reality programs. Researchers have imported mine maps into the software for the purpose of practicing actual evacuation routes and procedures. Various scenarios for evacuation can be practiced in a three-dimensional computer simulation of the mine in a disaster situation, complete with smoke, fire, and other dangers. Depending on the trainee's job description (i.e., foreman, shift boss, beltman, etc.), certain tasks need to be performed in addition to navigating primary and/or secondary escape routes. Each scenario allows for individual or team-based training and provides a means to educate mine workers in hazard recognition and hazard avoidance. Using this program, mine workers can practice evacuating various mine layouts without the danger and expense associated with escapeway training in an actual underground mine. Each scenario can be changed to test the trainee's reaction in a variety of circumstances and run many times so the trainee can practice concepts. This training experience will help reinforce the knowledge acquired during more conventional classroom instruction, and the inherent flexibility of the program allows training materials to be tailored to meet the specific requirements of individual mines.

"Re-occurring face ignitions in U.S. coal mines are concerning and require a closer look at air quality monitoring systems and practices employed in these mines. The explosion disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia in 2010 caused 29 fatal injuries and was largely caused by inadequate water sprays and inadequate ventilation monitoring. In this comparison, the author compares ventilation system monitoring in Australian, German and U.S. underground coal mines and makes recommendations for improvements and best practices. Mines in Germany and Australia are adhering to more stringent requirements for monitoring air quality and quantity and for monitoring water spray systems on cutters to prevent frictional ignitions. Air quality should to be monitored for sufficient oxygen, toxic gases, explosibility and for fire gases indicating a potential fire. Ventilation monitors must also confirm that sufficient quantities of air are available. Fully automated, continuously recording atmospheric monitoring and alarm systems are established practices in Germany and Australia and should be mandated for U.S. mines as well, in addition to the current, regular spot inspections of the ventilation system by certified mine examiners. BACKGROUND: METHANE EXPLOSIONS, FACE IGNITIONS AND NEED FOR AIR QUALITY MONITORING Accumulations of methane in face areas of underground coal mines frequently lead to ignitions that can cause burns, traumatic injuries and, in the case of the 2010 Upper Big Branch disaster, cause major explosions with multiple fatalities. Table 1 shows the number of reported face ignitions in U.S. coal mines between 2010 and 2014, based on statistical data published by MSHA (MSHA 2010 – 2014). Although there appears to be a downward trend in such ignition incidents over time, ignitions continue to occur with some regularity; and each ignition may cause a potentially catastrophic mine explosion.Per regulation, all U.S. coal mining machinery, continuous miners and longwall equipment, is outfitted with continuously monitoring methane sensors wired to cut power to the equipment as the methane level exceeds 1%. Face ignitions keep occurring because these sensors are usually not positioned in sufficiently close proximity to the coal cutting drums or to the freshly exposed coal face where the methane is most likely released. Therefore, methane may accumulate in explosive concentrations near the coal face and the cutting drums long before the gas concentration reaches the 1% level near the monitor and creates an alarm."

In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

The Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel is being built to bypass a substantial leak in New York City’s primary water supply tunnel. The 13,500 foot long tunnel travels 600 feet under the Hudson River through the same troubled geology and high pressure water inflows that the original tunnel did in the 1940s. A Robbins TBM traversed this geology and built gasketed segments. Nine thousand two hundred feet of 16 foot diameter interliner was installed and backfilled within the segments. Finally, reinforced cast in place lining was placed. This paper addresses the challenges and the multi-tasking approach the contractor utilized.

Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

San Antonio has experienced sustained growth for decades, putting increased pressure on existing wastewater infrastructure. In June 2013, San Antonio Water System (SAWS) reached a Consent Decree agreement that requires significant improvements to the wastewater system over a 10-year period to reduce Sanitary Sewer Overflows. One of the critical projects was the W-6 Upper Segment Tunnel project to reduce sanitary sewer overflows on an existing sewer main running through Lackland Airforce Base. The replacement project consisted of a new tunnel nearly 29,000 LF of primarily 104" FRP. The project also includes nine shafts and multiple trenchless crossings to make near surface connections to the new works.

"EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. Successful application of these diagrams, however, requires that several considerations be kept in mind to prevent what had been termed as “gross errors” in their calculation and use. In this paper, the aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the STABCAL thermodynamic equilibrium software. A breakdown of the Gibbs’ Phase Rule and how it is used in STABCAL to modify the diagrams is included. The methodology was applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system, and resulting diagrams were compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The complexity of such diagrams increases with every additional component, and competition between species becomes more apparent, as can be seen by curvature in the resulting mass-balanced diagrams. The complete diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is shown. It compares well with spectroelectrochemical measurements from Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies.IntroductionInnovation in the field of processing arsenicbearing copper ores has been of particular interest. Copper arsenic sulfosalt minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennanite (Cu12As4S13) are now frequently prevalent in ore bodies as the oxide and easily leachable sulfides become harder to find. These minerals, unless pretreated somehow, concentrate in copper sulfide flotation processes, in turn concentrating the arsenic levels. Increasing environmental restrictions on arsenic content for smelters makes the hydrometallurgical processing of these concentrates more favorable. While enargite is considered one of the more refractory copper sulfides, more so than chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), there are still several methods, both industrially proven and in development, that are capable of processing these ore types. Alkaline sulfide leaching can be used as a pretreatment method to solubilize arsenic selectively (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp, Takasaki and Shibayama, 2010a, 2010b), or the entire metal content can be leached using acid-type leaches such as acidified ferric sulfate (Dutrizac, 1981; Hackl et al., 1995; Klauber, 2008), or the chloride assisted, CESL (McDonald and Muir, 2007) or nitrogen species catalyzed (Anderson, 2003) processes can be used.As development of these leaching technologies proceed, it is also important to develop an understanding of the mineral thermodynamics. To date, there are numerous studies on the Cu-Fe-S-H2O system, particularly as it relates to chalcopyrite leaching, yet few studies have done on the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Computer-generated EH-pH diagrams have been employed to illustrate the importance of thermodynamic calculations in providing insight into such a system."

In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

Mechanized tunnelling is undoubtedly one of the most innovative disciplines in the international construction industry. Technological progress in the planning and production of most modern infrastructure is constantly striving for new records on basis of highly specialized solutions and know-how. Humans and technology have accomplished excellent achievements over the past few years in varied, difficult terrain. New length records are being set with the 64 km long Brenner Base Tunnel and the HS2 Railway system currently under construction in Europe. Cities are building ever longer and more demanding sewer tunnels. The paper highlights some of the challenges, trends and innovations of long-distance tunnelling projects.

"Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) and Analysis of Retreat Mine Pillar Stability (ARMPS) treat the pillar as a passive structure that is designed to carry overburden dead-weight. This dead-weight is calculated by simple rules based on the geometry of the mining, such as “tributary area theory,” “pressure arch theory,” and “abutment angle theory.” Although the pressure arch loading approach indirectly accounts for the generally stiffer overburden response of narrow and deep panels, it does not include the effect of specific geology of the overburden in load calculations. The relationship between successful pillar layouts and overburden geology can be incorporated into the load calculation by using the Ground Response Curve (GRC) approach.This paper introduces the GRC modeling methodology to investigate the effect of overburden geology and excavation geometry on load transfer mechanisms using seven field measurement case studies from four U.S. mines. It was also shown that the modeling methodology used to derive GRC in this study approximates mining-induced stresses and deformations within 5% of the values measured in the field.INTRODUCTIONFrith and Reed (2017) stated that current state-of-the-art pillar design methods ignore the overburden mechanics and use estimated dead-weight of overburden to compute pillar sizes. In the United States and around the world, overburden loading is typically estimated by simple geometric rules, generally with the tributary area theory (TAT). The specific overburden mechanics, structural competence of the overburden strata, geology, in situ stresses, and overburden/pillar interactions are typically ignored. However, these important mechanical responses affect the stability of the mine pillars and openings; therefore, they also affect the safety of the mine workers.Research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) after the Crandall Canyon mine disaster (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010) showed that small panel width-to-depth ratios and stiff-strong overburden result in a reduction of the observed pillar loads, much smaller than the TAT estimate. In fact, as a response to the Crandall Canyon disaster, Mark (2010) implemented a pressure arch loading approach into the latest ARMPS program to recognize the inherently greater stability of narrow panels at depth. The pressure arch approach is a first logical step to introducing non-tributary area loading into the practical ARMPS program. Although the pressure arch loading indirectly accounts for the generally stiffer overburden response of narrow and deep panels, it does not include the effect of specific geology and mechanical response of overburden in the load calculations."
