"There are signs that the commodity downturn that has battered the mining industry for the past five years is beginning to ease up. As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."

The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct iron making pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicate that 69% are less than 2.5 µm across, 21 % are 2.5-5 µm, and 10% are larger than 5 µm. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The numbers tell the story of this one. More than 50,000 people and 1,890 exhibitors took over the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 24-26 for the largest mining trade show in the world ? MINExpo. Inside the convention center, some of the largest machines used in mining were on display. Caterpillar, Liebherr, Komatsu and Hitachi displayed ultraclass offroad mining trucks and shovels. Atlas Copco and Schramm were among companies that rolled in mining drills and Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin were among the companies showing off the massive tires used by the trucks. Throughout the three halls and an outdoor display area, just about every kind of product, gadget or service used in the mining industry could be found on display somewhere.

The application of an open-pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to analyze mine planning and scheduling problems in large surface mines is discussed. The mine chosen for this application employed a large stripping dragline working in tandem with a shovel-truck haulback system for removing overburden. Large bottom-dump trucks were employed behind a coal loading shovel to transport the exposed coal out of the pit. Specifically, the current operations and the recommendations for short term and long term improvements were simulated on OPMHS. The effects of changing the operating parameters of the equipment on the total system were evaluated. Several alternatives were also studied for the best use of the existing equipment if the current operating parameters could not be improved upon. The results of the application are discussed.

Conventional wisdom in the mineral processing industry leads one to believe that pressure oxidation of refractory carbonaceous (preg-robbing) ores is not a practical approach to process development. Initial acid pressure oxidation testing on carbonaceous sulfide ores at the Twin Creeks Mine supported this conventional wisdom. After testing other refractory process options, including air and oxygen enriched roasting, Santa Fe Pacific Gold decided to take a second look at pressure oxidation, using conditions outside the normal range of conventional practice. A combination of very fine grinding and high operating temperature and pressure resulted in significant increases in gold extraction. This paper details the effect of operating parameters developed for Twin Creeks on gold recovery, sulfur oxidation, carbon oxidation/passivation and preg-robb through the laboratory and pilot plant investigations.

Kaolin is defined and described as an industrial mineral. In addition the types of deposits -primary and secondary are defined and the genesis of kaolin from feldspars and other minerals discussed. The major deposits of the world found in the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, and Czechoslovakia are described along with many of the minor kaolin deposits. Four areas which have very large deposits of kaolin could, with technological breakthroughs to reduce viscosity significantly, become important factors in supplying the world markets which are increasing year by year.

As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. An AFM has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite in aqueous solutions. The AFM images show that fluorite surface becomes smoother with the adsorption of 7 × 10-5 M oleic acid solution at pH 9. Force measurement shows that fluorite is strongly positively charged in water at pH 6, suggesting a neglectable surface carbonation of fluorite. The adsorption of oleic acid at pH 9 renders fluorite more and more negatively charged. The surface morphology change of fluorite as shown by the AFM images suggests that oleic acid chemisorbs on fluorite at pH 9. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite. It may also improve the lateral polymerization of unsaturated oleic acid on fluorite as suggested by the smoother mineral surface in oleic acid solutions at an elevated temperature.

Coal-fired power plants in the U. S. produce approximately 20 million metric tons of Hue-gas desulfurization sludge every year. The sludge mainly consists of calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. This can be converted to synthetic gypsum, which in principle could be a marketable commodity. However, many Hue-gas scrubbers produce sludges that do not meet the quality requirements of the gypsum industry, and so their sludges must be landfilled as a waste. If a suitable method can be developed for removing certain objectionable impurities from the sludge, it will then be possible to market the material instead of landfilling it. A sludge from a natural-oxidation scrubber was characterized, and the main contaminant was found to be calcium carbonate from unreacted limestone. Based on the particle size and the characteristics of the material, froth flotation was considered as a method for purifying the material. Since no flotation studies have ever been carried out to separate calcium carbonate particles from calcium sulfite or calcium sulfate particles, it was first necessary to select a suitable collecting reagent. Based on Zeta-potential studies, the most suitable reagent was found to be an octadecylamine-octadecylguanidine complex. Results are presented for flotation of calcium carbonate from scrubber sludge using this reagent, in a reverse-flotation process. The best results were obtained when the sludge was first pre-cleaned using a water-only cyclone to remove unfloatable coarse limestone, followed by froth flotation to remove fine limestone.

The continuous need for infrastructure expansion forces the mining industry to develop underground structures into more sensitive and violent environments. Whatever support system is chosen, it is mandatory that potential rock movement be controlled. All this has intensified the development of safety systems and new, unique solutions which can enable construction companies to go both, further and deeper, without reducing the level of safety. To address these needs, Atlas Copco developed the Roofex® bolt, specifically designed to withstand large static and dynamic deformations under prespecified load conditions. The most complete mining show ever held in the United States and the largest exposition of its kind to be held anywhere in the world in 1988. That's how the American Mining Congress is billing its "MINExpo International '88," to be held April 24-28 at Chicago's McCormick Place, the largest exposition facility in the country. MINExpo International '88 will combine for the first time two previously separate AMC-sponsored shows - the International Coal Show and the International Mining Show. Starting with the 1988 show, MINExpo International will be held every four years. The next show, in 1992, will be held in Las Vegas. The MINExpo in Chicago will feature more than 500 mining equipment and services exhibits covering 3 hm2 (320,000 sq ft) of exhibit space. Exhibitors will display products ranging from small safety devices to large earth-moving equipment. MINExpo is one of the few trade shows selected by the US Department of Commerce for its Foreign Buyer Program. Commerce is working with US embassies around the world to publicize MINExpo and to form delegations of visitors from many countries. Overseas visitors to the show will be assisted at an on-site International Business Center. It will provide currency exchange, translation, and other services to foreign buyers. Registrants at MINExpo will also be able to attend their choice of 27 morning-only program sessions. At these sessions, international mining experts from industry, government, and academe will analyze technical, strategic, and policy matters and discuss the outlook for the industry. "Toward the 21st Century" is the theme of this year's program. The technical workshops and managerial seminars are designed to assist mining executives, engineers, and geologists as well as mine superintendents, managers, and foremen in handling their responsibilities. Based on previous attendance at AMC international mining shows, the association says that more than 25,000 persons are expected to attend the Chicago show. It is expected that approximately 15% of the attendees will be from foreign countries. The Soviet Union will be among those exhibiting at MINExpo. The Russians have leased more than 2.8 dame (3000 sq ft) of space to display their mining machinery and equipment. It is the first time that the Russians have joined in an exhibition of mining equipment in the US. The two largest manufacturers of mining equipment in the Soviet Union, Setmash and Avtoexport, will put on display in Chicago a variety of Russian-made equipment. It will range from 100 t (110 st) heavy-duty dump trucks and diesel engines to drilling, hoisting, and conveying equipment. In addition to some 400 US exhibitors of mining equipment and services at MINExpo, nearly 100 companies will be present from other major mining nations such as Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, and West Germany. And, for the first time, a Chinese manufacturer will take part in the AMC show, participating with its US marketing partner.

The design of most underground support systems has largely been based upon empirical rules. This design method has proven to be satisfactory in most cases as witnessed by the number of successfully completed works. However, the adequacy of this approach to the developing technology of ground support systems associated with deep excavation has not been substantiated. In cases where the material has definite time-dependent behavior parameters, rules of past experience become extremely vague and conservative. The Spokane Mining Research Center is currently engaged in extensive research to develop rational design methods for underground structures which will account for the many interacting factors such as in-situ properties of the rock mass, excavation methods, proposed types of support system, construction sequence, and environmental variables. Computer-controlled machine sorting may, if properly applied, have a dramatic effect on overall economics of a mine operation. Radiometric and photometric sorters have been used for many years and new developments will be reported, such as a sorter for fine particles and a conductivity/magnetic sorter. Application examples with emphasis on precious metals will be given. Economics for some of the projects will be reviewed and discussed. Sorting underground is shown to be particularly attractive, but machine sorting would be profitable in most cases based on savings in transportation and milling/beneficiation costs only.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the cost approach category for real property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties. The author reasons that standards and regulations pertaining to real property valuation should be modified, and underlying principles should be expanded, so as not to inhibit appropriate application of these cost approach methods.

The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a research and development project sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe containment for disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is currently being developed 2150 feet below the surface, in a thick salt bed which will serve as the disposal medium. Provision of a proper ventilation system at the WIPP Project is a major priority of those responsible for its design, management, and operations. As an ongoing effort towards this goal, it was decided to simulate the mine's ventilation system using Dravo's MINEVENT computer program. Specifically, the work included the development of the following simulation models: 1. Simulation of the current ventilation system 2. Simulation of the designed ventilation system for the following modes: o Mine Construction mode/shift o Waste storage mode/shift o Fire or exhaust filtration mode These computer models are useful in solving complex ventilation problems likely to be encountered in an R&D project, like WIPP. They are particularly helpful for the development of contingency plans to incorporate during emergency situations, such as fires, fan stop- pages, radiation leaks, etc. Also, they can be utilized when considering expanding certain underground areas to ensure the availability of adequate ventilation.

"While the American Exploration & Mining Association (AEMA) was preparing to close one chapter and begin another during its annual conference in Spokane, WA Dec. 3-7, word of a significant victory on an issue that has been important to the association for many years came from the halls of Washington, D.C.During a keynote address on Dec. 6, Joe Balash, assistant secretary of Land and Minerals Management for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), told a sold-out lunch crowd that the DOI had released final drafts of proposed revisions to the Obama-era greater sage grouse conservation plans. The revisions suggest removing hundreds of thousands of acres of federally protected habitat in Utah, and easing restrictions on energy development and other activities, including mining, in Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming.The protections of the sage grouse were put in place by the Obama administration in 2015. The sage grouse, a prairie fowl, is considered by conservationists to be a key indicator species for the health of America’s sagebrush ecosystem. The previous plan to protect the ground-dwelling bird imposed restrictions to development in sage grouse habitat, but did not place the birds on the endangered species list — a move that many believed would have imposed far more rigid rules.AEMA, and its executive director Laura Skaer, led the way in the fight against the Obama-era greater sage grouse plan, arguing that the plan unnecessarily hurt economic development.“We were the first organization to point out that the greater sage grouse was being used to stop mining, oil and gas production and grazing on public lands in the interior mountain west,” said Skaer who is retiring from AEMA with a significant legal win on this front. “Early on, we cautioned that the proposed Land Use Plan Amendments would be worse than a listing (of the sage grouse) under the Endangered Species Act. Very few believed us until they saw the plans with all of the restrictions and the recommendation for a 4-million-ha (10-million-acre) withdrawal from mineral entry. We were the only organization that filed comments on all 88 Land Use Plan Amendments in 11 states covering more than 24.2 million ha (60 million acres).”"

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

"INTRODUCTION Of all the natural resources being taxed by the needs of the modern world, perhaps the most important is the continually expanding demand for water resources. As water becomes scarcer, and increasingly important, new technologies are needed to find innovative ways to preserve this precious resource. In Chile, for example, the mining industry is investing billions of dollars to build desalination plants and pipelines; bringing ocean water as far as 200 kilometers inland to meet their demand and maintain operations. It is a full-blown crisis for that nation and a top priority for their government and economy. It has been reported that world water consumption will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years, representing nearly exponential growth. In the U.S., as more and more communities continue to be built, more drain on the current water infrastructure is created. For 25 percent of people and operations that rely on water from aquifers, this source is being consumed at a rate that will create significant problems meeting the demand in as few as two generations.1 A PROACTIVE APPROACH When it comes to controlling dust at your operation, whether a landfill, a transfer station, a haul road or another ancillary area, what are the options? We know watering is not the answer, but at the same time, we need to prevent dust from flying to ensure a safe environment and keep our skies clear of pollution, for both regulatory requirements and neighbors. Creating a Dust Mitigation Program instead of looking to buy the first dust control product off the shelf is a first step to conserve water and, at the same time, maintain the operational demands and environmental standards for a given site. The program concept is straightforward enough. However, the process of effectively constructing and executing a program is quite involved. When undertaking a program, each manager needs to work with their team and their partners/vendors in analyzing the following elements: 1. Site Expectations—It is important to understand how to balance your internal standards with your regulatory requirements, as well as how to keep your neighbors satisfied. 2. Site Aggregate—Variations in native soil, such as clay content or gravel levels, greatly affect the approach that will yield the highest results. 3. Climate—Relative humidity and seasonal variations are critical to achieving predictable results through product choice, application frequency and timing. 4. Daily Traffic—The type and frequency of traffic is an essential variable for site management. 5. Environmental Responsibilities—If you have additional, specifically defined responsibilities, the approach to your site may vary. 6. Budget—While efficiency is the goal of any program, some sites will have more stringent restrictions than others. 7. Current Usage Rates—Document and understand where you’re starting from, both with water, supporting products, and maintenance so that effective measurement of results is possible."
