This paper describes the application of a cable disc elevator to continuous lift ore vertically from underground mines. Application of this system requires the tensions developed within the cable must remain within the carrying capacity of the cable including applicable safety margins. A critical element occurs at starting the system when it is fully loaded which requires the force developed by the system to exceed the static friction forces. This paper describes the laboratory rig developed to investigate the static friction forces. Details of the results of tests on three different ores for both dry and wet conditions are given. These results are discussed.

The experimental results of some wet batch and continuous grinding experiments carried out in a 40 x 40 cm grate discharge ball mill have been analyzed for the variation of the grinding rate parameters, Si, with various operating conditions using a linearized population balance model. The wet grinding tests were carried out under conditions which were very similar to those encountered in the actual practice in plant operation. Well distributed -4 and -20 mesh feeds of two complex pyritic ores were used. The volume-percent solids in the pulp ranged from 30-40, the particle load from 5-8 kg, and the solids feed rate from 70-1 10 kg/hr.

The Zurichberg twin track tunnel is the main segment of the Swiss Federal Railway's new expressline. A heavy concrete lining with a circular cross-section was chosen to cope with the swelling tendency of the surrounding rock. The 4,356 m (14,300 ft) long, 11.52 m (38 ft) diameter tunnel was driven using a shielded Robbins TBM. A 1.20 m (4 ft) wide, 25 cm (10 in) thick precast lining was placed from within the shield tail as the excavation progressed. Tunnel excavation and initial lining operation were completed in 18 months, averaging 11.86 m/day (40 ft/day) in two nine hour shifts. After breaking through, the final 28 cm (11 in) thick concrete arch lining was cast in place.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,175 t (3,500 st) of ore per day with an average gold grade of 12.6 g/t (0.4 opst). The mine has a large horizontal extent of 762 by 152 m (2,500 by 500 ft) and a vertical extent of 6 to 61 m (20 to 200 ft). Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, the deposits are divided into several mining zones. The geotechnical properties of mining zones are also different from one zone to another. A successful geotechnical collection system is very important for mining design and operation in the Leeville underground mine. Three methods are used to collect the geotechnical data in the Leeville underground mine: • Core logging. Most geotechnical data are collected by this method, which is based on exploratory drills and estimates parameters for rock quality designation (RQD), fracture frequency (FF), compressive strength and rock mass rate (RMR). • Site investigation. This method collects more detailed geotechnical data and geostructural data from work done in the underground drifts and stopes. Parameters of RQD, FF, compressive strength, RMR, rock tunneling quality index (Q) and geostructural data are estimated. • Data collected from drill holes made for the critical infrastructure facilities. This method provides the best detailed geotechnical information for areas in which the critical infrastructure located. A complete geotechnical database has been constructed using this geotechnical data collection system. The database can be used for the design of ground support, stopes and stope blasts, among other critical applications.

Unitization and containerization continue to grow with great rapidity throughout the world today. Every industrial nation outside of the Iron Curtain is devoting more and more time toward research of these developing sciences. Unitization and containerization are proving to be the solution to many of modern industry's most pressing handling and shipping problems. Manufacturers make large savings, carriers receive many benefits, and customers take an increasing interest in demanding that their shipments either be unitized or containerized. Unit-loads consist of items, packages or bulk materials pre-assembled into a convenient mass for handling by mechanized equipment and to fit the internal dimensions of carriers. It has been found that unitized handling and shipping offers cost savings too great to be ignored by anyone interested in the distribution of goods. At present, the benefits from unitized shipping and handling are being enjoyed only to a small extent due to the failure of many persons concerned with handling practices in recognizing only some of the advantages of unitization. Before the full benefits of unitized handling and shipping can be realized, some major changes in packaging and distribution practices will be necessary on the part of industry. Numerous investigations in the last two years show conclusively that there are more advantages and more inherent savings for shipping goods on pallets in unit loads than by any other method. There is no question that unit-load handling can offer significant advantages to the user over piece-by-piece package handling. Reduction in handling costs is the primary objective of such activities, but it is by far not the sole objective. Some of the other benefits that can be realized are:

Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

Storage and transport systems are essential for mineral processing. Section 10 includes systems for storage and transport of dry bulk materials, slurries, and water necessary for operation of mineral pro¬cessing plants. All aspects of these systems are presented, including material characteristics; dry material placement in and reclamation from storage stockpiles and bins; dry material conveyance; hydraulics (liquid flow and pumping); slurry characteristics; slurry storage and reclaim, slurry flow (distributors, launders, and pipes), and pumping; water (primary and secondary process, reclaimed, fire, cooling, and domestic) supply, transport, and storage; equipment selection and sizing; power transmission; controls; and health and safety. The mate¬rials considered include crude ore; process and other water supplies; initial, intermediate; and final in-plant materials; finished materials; and tailings and other waste products. Section 10 is a compilation of practical operating data for engineers, technicians, and plant opera¬tors. For the design of mineral processing plants, including selection and sizing of equipment, the design engineer should consult with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, engineering firms, and plant op¬erators with specialized experience in particular materials handling methods. When unusual conditions are encountered, actual pilot or full scale testing may be required to insure adequate design. Operation of mineral processing plants is dependent on the proper engineering and construction of storage and transport systems for dry bulk materials, slurries, and water. It is obvious that processing plants cannot produce the required quantities of semifinished and finished products unless these material can be transported adequately to, through, within, and from the plant. Costs of storage and transport systems may exceed 50% of the total capital and/or operating costs. Considerable attention must be given to the design, layout, and engineering of these systems. These systems are interrelated with the mineral processing method and it is necessary to determine the best combination of mineral processing method and storage and transport systems. Storage and transport systems perform a major supportive func¬tion to mineral processing. The final selection of these systems depends on the final selection of the processing method and related systems (environmental control, tailings and waste disposal, etc.). The process¬ing method determines the characteristics of materials to be stored and transported; distances, elevations, flow rates for transport; and storage requirements. Flowsheet After selection of the processing method and related systems, a flowsheet must be developed. This flowsheet should indicate produc¬tion rate, percent solids or moisture, and specific gravity for all initial, intermediate, and final products or product flow streams. It also may be necessary to know the size analysis, chemical analysis, abrasiveness, and other physical characteristics of various product flow streams. The flowsheet provides basic information for plant layout, storage requirements, and selection and sizing of process and transport equip¬ment. Storage and transport systems often function improperly be¬ cause of inadequate flowsheet data or process revisions, resulting in improper equipment selection and sizing. Further details on plant design are presented in Section 33. After selection and sizing of process equipment, it is necessary to select the type of material transport equipment to be used for in¬plant materials handling as well as crude ore, tailings, and final prod¬ucts. The storage and/or surge requirements, including capacity and location, then are determined. Storage and/or surge capacity is neces¬sary for leveling production rate fluctuations due to variations in material characteristics; production scheduling; equipment mismatch¬ing, failure, or breakdown; and scheduled maintenance downtime. Variations in ore grindability will cause fluctuations in throughput or production rate for grinding mills and variations in ore grade will cause fluctuations in production rate for concentrating equipment. Variations in material moisture content and percent solids can have serious effects on the capacity of material transport equipment. In some cases, a blending system may be desirable or necessary to reduce variations and to obtain uniform production and/or metallurgy. Storage capacity often is needed because of different production schedules for various phases of the mining and mineral processing complex. As an example, the mine and coarse crushing plant may operate on a one- or two-shift-per-day schedule while the fine crushing plant and concentrator on a three-shift-per-day schedule. This would require storage between the coarse and fine crushing plants. Another example would be load-out storage where unit trains are used to haul concentrate or final products. The concentrator could be operated on a three-shift-per-day schedule while only I to 2 hr may be scheduled for unit train loading. This would require adequate load-out storage so that the concentrator can be operated continuously. Process equipment with mismatched capacities requires storage or surge capacity between the mismatched equipment to achieve oper¬ating efficiency. As an example, the fine crushers may have greater capacity than the rod mills. Storage between the fine crushers and the rod mills permits both the crushers and rod mills to be operated at optimum capacity with the crushers actually operating or running a lesser number of hours per day. Mismatched capacities for process and transport equipment also may require storage or surge capacity. Mismatching of equipment capacities most often occurs because of the difficulty in equipment sizing. Thus, the design engineer must anticipate where in the flowsheet these mismatching capacities are likely to occur while making every effort to assure that equipment is selected and sized properly. Equipment breakdown can cause major operating difficulties and lost production. These breakdowns can be reduced with adequate scheduled maintenance. Lost production due to nonscheduled down¬time caused by equipment breakdown can be reduced further by standby equipment and storage and/or surge capacity ahead of essen¬tial mechanical and electrical equipment. As an example, standby pumps and conveyors often are available as part of the in-plant trans¬port system. Storage and/or surge bins and tanks often serve dual functions, such as dewatering, mixing, and smoothing production rate fluctuations.

In a mineral processing plant there are a number of routine decisions which are based at least in part on the plant's metallurgical performance. Among these are those related to: 1) equipment functioning properly 2) suitable operating conditions 3) reagents achieving desired results 4} determining operating response to changes in ore 5) defining circuits offering potential for improvement A step beyond the routine, are the periodic management evaluations of operating supervision and technical assistance, which are based largely on profit -a direct function of are availability, metallurgical performance and operating costs. The "yardstick", excuse me -"meterstick", by which performance is best measured is the plant metallurgical balance, which tells not only what was produced but how it was produced. Since this metallurgical balance is directly related to both plant profits and individual rewards, it is only reasonable to make that "meterstick" as precise as humanly possible.

"INTRODUCTION Outer space technology and exploration have reached a tipping point so that mining and mineral processing in outer space is now a certainty and not a dream. Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."

The coal seam in the southern coal field of the Ordos Basin serves as the main aquifer, while the region is known for its high-intensity coal mining activities. The coupling effect of mine water and the strong disturbance caused by high-intensity mining have brought serious challenges to the stability of coal pillars. To address this, a formula for determining the reasonable width of coal pillars under the aforementioned coupling effect and establish a criterion for coal pillar instability in this paper. A case study was on the 11,215 working face at the Xiaojihan coal mine in the area to investigate coal pillar stability. Results indicate that the strength and stability of the coal pillar are affected by the water content, with a small water content increasing its strength and large water content weakening it. In high-intensity exploration of watery coal seams, the best stability of the coal pillar is achieved at optimal water content and mining rates. For the Xiaojihan coal mine, the optimum water content and mining rate are 3.31% and 20 m/d, respectively, ensuring the efficient mining of watery coal seams. Furthermore, this study's findings can provide valuable references for the mining design of coal mines with similar geological conditions in the region.

The two Agrico Chemical Company self unloading Phosphate Rock barges put into service in 1976 operate at over their design carrying capacity. Each barge now carries 26,000 short ton instead of the planned 25,000 short ton at 32 foot of draft. They are in service between Agrico's Tampa, Florida Terminal and the Donaldsonville, Louisiana Fertilizer Complex, moving a total of 2,500,000 short tons each year. This was the first use of the Parascrew design for a marine application. The barges, with their 3,000 STPH unloading and matching loading rate is the vital link in this total transportation and handling system. Rock is moved from the Pierce, Florida Mines through the Tampa Big Bend Terminal, across the Gulf of Mexico, and up the Mississippi to the Agrico Faustina Phosphoric Acid Plant 30 miles below Bacon Rouge, Louisiana. The trip from the terminal to the plant is 600 miles and the turnaround time is just about six days. Seven years operating experience has proved that the system works. Fittingly, the two barges are named the "Faustina" and the "Pierce". They have a beam of 85-feet and are 495 feet long. folded depth is 43 feet, with a ballasted light draft of 19 feet and a typical loaded draft of 32 feet. There are four separated holds with the machinery room located forward of 101 hold. Each hold is 51 feet wide at the coamings with an 18 foot straight section on the side, and a 24 foot long, 600 slope sheet for a 23 foot clear reclaim width at the bottom. The Parascrew in each of the holds is 37 feet long between the bearings and is supported on a 14 inch diameter hollow shaft. The screw pitch varies and the diameter of the flights step up from l'-9" diameter to 2'-6" diameter on the discharge end. By sloping the centerline, a minimum four inch bottom clearance is maintained across the hold. Some bending of the tube does take place.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s annual conference and expo, MINEXCHANGE 2026, will take place Feb. 22–25, 2026, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The event will foster a hub for innovation, technical exchange and policy discussion for the global mining industry. Over four days, attendees will take part in short courses, technical sessions, field trips and networking events that highlight the advancement of the mining industry. The conference’s keynote session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” will start at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 in the Grand Ballroom E–J. The speaker will address the sweeping policy actions now shaping the nation’s mineral future, following a series of executive orders issued by the Trump administration designed to bolster domestic mineral production and energy security. These directives, including Immediate Measures to Increase Domestic Mineral Production (EO 14241) and Establishing the National Energy Dominance Council (EO 14213), have set in motion a coordinated effort across the Departments of Interior, Energy, Defense and Commerce to enhance the United States’ position as a global leader in critical minerals. The invited speakers include Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Nate Foster, managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott, who will examine how policy and industry are converging to meet surging demand for minerals essential to modern technology. Governor Cox is expected to highlight Utah’s long-standing role in American mining, from the early development of Kennecott Copper to its current position as a producer of 40 of the nation’s 50 identified critical minerals. Foster, meanwhile, will offer insights into Rio Tinto’s extensive operations in Utah, including the Kennecott Copper Mine — one of only two operating copper smelters in the United States — and the company’s ongoing efforts to build more resilient, sustainable supply chains. Rio Tinto’s work in critical mineral production, from copper and tellurium in Utah to new operations in Arizona, has made it a fundamental figure in the U.S. mineral economy. Projects such as the Resolution Copper development and the revival of Gunnison Copper using Rio Tinto’s innovative Nuton technology illustrate how private-sector leadership is driving sustainability in domestic mining. Linear circuit analysis (LCA) is a fundamental tool which has been used to evaluate mineral separation circuits during the preliminary design phase. Traditionally, the LCA methodology uses the analytic circuit solution to determine the relative slope of the circuit?s partition curve. This value is then used as an indicative performance measure suitable for the comparison and ranking of alternative circuit configurations. Unfortunately, the partition curve slope only reflects the separation potential of middling material. In most mineral systems, this material represents a small portion of the initial feed (due to liberation) as well as a small portion of the revenue potential (due to the incremental value). Respecting these limitations, the authors have developed new separation performance indicators which may be derived from the analytical circuit solution and used in LCA problems. These indicators inherently reflect the separation potential of pure material, providing a better indication of lost revenue due to misplaced material. The complete methodology has been integrated with prior software to produce the Heuristic Optimizer for Resource Separation Economics (HORSE).

Beam theory is a proxy for the behavior of intact, deforming roof strata above underground openings. Strong, stiff, intact strata have the ability to store significant strain energy when underground openings have large spans, as is typical of longwall operations. When strata fail, they may release some or all of this strain energy. Released energy is partitioned between fracture, thermal, and seismic energy. The tensile failure surface in simply supported beams is predicted to be free of shear stress. This prediction and the kinematic inability of crack slip during fracture make significant dissipation of energy by friction unlikely. In this study, the failure energy partitioning of Nugget Sandstone specimens is examined. Tensile fractures in specimens were induced using three-point loading tests. Elastic waves emanating from fracture events were recorded using an array of accelerometers. Accelerometers were placed within two crack lengths of the fracture surface, and the acceleration records are similar to strong motion seismic records. Spectral analysis was performed and used to develop synthetic, well-behaved, acceleration signals. Synthetic velocity signals were used to estimate radiated seismic energy generated by fracture. These estimates of radiated seismic energy demonstrate a potential means to constrain the minimum seismic partition. Fracture testing was performed on additional samples to estimate the fracture toughness of the sandstone. Synthesis of this data demonstrate a potential means to constrain a maximum seismic partition. Bounding the seismic partition for this type of fracture event could aid the detection and evaluation of seismicity emanating from longwall operations. Having better information about the location and magnitude of mining-induced seismicity within longwall overburdens could lead to better understanding of extraction sequencing and rock behavior in general. These energy estimates also support the hypothesis that dissipation of thermal energy by friction is small in bending tensile failure.

OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

The beach and offshore gold resources demonstrated at Nome, Alaska are some of the richest found in Alaska. They contain potentially significant resources that may be exploited in the future. Several companies have contributed to the exploration and reserve estimation in Nome offshore gold deposits. More than 3,000 holes were drilled and over 10,000 offshore samples were analyzed in the Nome offshore areas of approximately 40 km2. Those 3,000 plus drill hole logs were converted into digital formats comparable with ArcGIS software. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS 8.3 and its geostatistic, 3D analysis, and spatial analysis components. In this study, based on the data processing and visualization results of ArcGIS, a user-friendly website for mineral resource management and utilization is developed using ArcIMS 4.0.1. ArcIMS is a GIS solution to build and deliver maps, data, and tools over the Internet. The Nome offshore mineral resources website presents the geostatistic and GIS analysis information. This site allows clients to access the information and perform ArcGIS analysis, such as interactive data query, and map layers display of the gold resource distribution, average grade, gold reserve, and relative mineral resource estimation via remote computers. With linkage to other related mining web sites, this web site allows users to search for related publications and more flexibly manage the information. A few other appropriate customized tools are also being developed to assist interactions between the server and clients for data analysis and management.

The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth's capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America's industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country's expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. They issued the following statement: "...our desire to free ourselves from dependence upon a foreign market (has) led to the organization of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, and the parties who have connected themselves with it are determined to produce upon American soil all the principal manufactures of steel that are now, at such a serious cost for freight, commission, insurance, exchange, duty, etc., and often, with so much delay and uncertainty, imported from abroad. "Maceral separation is one possible technique to expand coking coal resources, either by increasing the blending ratio of non- or slightly caking coal or rationally utilizing the coking coal according to the different behaviors of macerals in coking. The success of maceral enrichment for a given coal using flotation is dependent on the differences in flotation kinetic rate among macerals. This paper presents the flotation rates and zeta potentials of the vitrinite-rich and inertiniterich maceral concentrates obtained from six coal samples of different ranks – from high-volatile B bituminous coal with mean random vitrinite reflectance (Rrandom) of 0.64 percent to low-volatile bituminous coal with Rrandom of 1.73 percent – using a float-sink procedure. The flotation results show that vitrinite-rich concentrates can be produced in tap water using froth flotation only with frother for the high-volatile B and A bituminous coal samples, but there was no good performance for the high-volatile C bituminous and medium- to low-volatile bituminous coal samples. The zeta potential results show that froth flotation could probably separate the high-volatile C bituminous coal samples well by adjusting pH, but there was no good performance for the higher-rank coal samples. Because caking coals are rare and expensive, they are often blended with non- or slightly caking coals. Considering the tight supply-demand situation for coking coal in China, it is important and urgent to develop highly efficient technologies for rationally utilizing and expanding coking coal resources (Mochizuki et al., 2013)."

The pelletizing process for low grade iron ores has undergone continual changes since its inception over twenty years ago. These changes have necessitated filtration equipment changes in order to produce a product suitable for balling. With modern techniques it is now possible to produce pellets of 68% Fe from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Low grade ores require fine grinding to liberate impurities This shift to finer grinds over the years has necessitated major changes in the filtration steps. Techniques are now available for producing suitable product from ores with Blaines as high as 3600 cm2/gram. This has been made possible by the development of high performance filters. Recent developments have reduced maintenance costs and produced higher production reliability. The paper discusses iron concentrate filtration from its beginning to present day design. It will be shown that the dewatering step prior to balling has gone through four generations of filters. Particular emphasis is placed upon hydraulic studies which have allowed today's optimum designs.
