Underground mining accidents in the USA in recent times have prompted the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to review emergency and tracking systems for underground mines. Several communication and tracking systems are available on the market and various systems have been installed in mines around the world. In addition, MSHA?s standard on Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) requires mines to comply with the final PEL of 160µg/m3 by May 20, 2008. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc., Underground Division, has been in operation since 1995 and an extensive control and monitoring network, and a leaky feeder voice network is in place. Enhancements to the communication and control system are currently being implemented to include a PED emergency notification system, wireless LAN with tracking of personnel and equipment in the mine, and a ventilation control system that will use the tracking information and ventilation data to automate much of the mine ventilation system. Expected benefits from such a system would be enhanced communication with miners, emergency notification, location of miners and equipment, energy savings, improved ventilation control, and improved atmospheric conditions in the mine including reduction of diesel particulate matter (DPM).

Methane gas caused an eight-month shutdown of mining operations at the Mill Creek, Phase 3, Tunnel. The gas-related shutdown occurred as the tunnel was advanced to an approximate distance of 2,700 feet, which constitutes approximately18% of the total tunnel length. The construction of an emergency ventilation shaft, a comprehensive program of de-gassing wells and an expanded gas monitoring system were used to mitigate the gas condition. When complete, this tunnel will be utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from a portion of Cleveland, Ohio and ten suburbs. This paper will provide an overview of gas related remedial measures and explain how these measures were integrated into the project to ensure safe tunneling conditions.

Hydro-Jex© releaching was undertaken during the summer of 2010 at the Valley Leach Facility (VLF) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine. Several advancements to the technique were made in response to the technical design and operational challenges posed by the unique site conditions. New geophysical resistivity monitoring techniques were developed to monitor solution migration during the injections. These developments are presented along with discussion of gold production resulting from the project.

In recent years, U.S. regulatory agencies have placed emphasis on identifying and regulating asbestos dust exposures in the mining environment, with a particular focus upon industrial mineral deposits in which asbestos occurs as an accessory mineral. Because asbestos minerals form in specific geologic environments, only certain predictable types of industrial mineral deposits can potentially host asbestos mineralization. By applying a basic knowledge of asbestos geology, the costly and time consuming efforts of asbestos monitoring and analyses can be directed towards those mineral deposit types most likely to contain asbestos mineralogy, while saving efforts on the mineral deposits that are unlikely to contain asbestos. While the vast majority of industrial mineral deposits in the Western United States are asbestos-free, there are several types that can, in some instances, host asbestos mineralization, or be closely associated with it. These industrial mineral deposits include a few types of aggregate, dimension, and decorative stone, and some deposits of chromite-nickel, magnesite, nepheline syenite, olivine, rare earth elements, talc, vermiculite, and wollastonite.

The city of Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by miners seeking tin near the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. The rapid development of the city and surrounding area since independence has led to more rapid runoff during rainstorms and to gradual canalisation of the rivers with some restricted sections. The outcome has been more frequent and more severe floods (Abdullah 2006). At the same time the centre of Kuala Lumpur has become a modern inter-national city with tall office buildings, hotels, and shopping centres connected by a network of wide roads and commuter rail systems. With these the cost of dislocation during floods has risen as has the cost of making good damage afterwards. The Government of Malaysia considered these consequences unacceptable and sought ideas from the private sector for a solution. Potential solutions consisted of variations on the themes of bypassing the city centre with a flood relief tunnel or of providing off channel storage or a combination of both. Since under Malaysian law a tunnel cannot be constructed under private property unless this is first purchased or agreement reached with the owner, it was necessary for most of the tunnel alignment to run below existing heavily congested roads. After considering these facts Gamuda Berhad and MMC Berhad, two leading Malaysian development and construction companies, decided to propose to Government an innovative solution in which the tunnel would be used to carry road traffic except during floods.

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it “feels right”. We have developed procedures to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will be suitable for copper heap leaching.

In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Does that match your experience? Many of you, 764 or 69.4%, clip your magazine for further reference. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. The regulations for current coal mine refuge alternative (RAs) require that there be sufficient life support to sustain survival of the maximum number of RA occupants for a minimum of 96 hours. This minimum duration assumes that rescuers can access the RA through the mine within four (4) days of the onset of the mine emergency. But what if mine rescue teams cannot reach the miners within the RA before the RA air supply is severely limited or exhausted? What could be done to extend the duration of the RA life support capability into the 97th hour and beyond? In addition, what might be done to enable more rapid rescue of the miners if they could not be reached through the mine in a timely manner? This paper describes a systems approach to address the potential need to extend the duration of RA life support beyond current design limits. New capabilities that need to be developed in advance of such a dire need include more reliable emergency communications, highly mobile and efficient drilling rigs, enhanced directional drilling techniques, and a standardized RA external life support interface along with RA internal design modifications to accommodate use of an external supply. The following sections describe the need, intent, and technology gaps associated with each of these capabilities. Government agencies and the mining industry should consider initiation of a program to investigate, design, and develop effective means of extending the current 96-hour time restriction on coal mine refuge alternative life support. The development process should begin with a focused study to refine the overall operational concept, investigate the current state-of-the art of critical technologies, identify specific technology development priorities, and make recommendations for a development program to provide in an organized, efficient, and timely manner a solution for extended refuge alternative life support and occupant rescue.

Testing was conducted on a Minnesota Iron Ore concentrate with Cook Clay as a binder using compressive sheer mixing to enhance the performance of the agglomeration mechanism. The testing was conducted on a bench scale at the Midland Research Center the summer of 2004. Results of the test program will be presented that shows the impact of compressive sheer mixing had on the strength achieve in a green ball.

The U.S. Geological Survey has completed a dig-ital coal resource assessment of six of the top-producing coal beds and coal zones in the northern and central Appalachian Basin coal regions. These include the Pennsylvanian-aged Pittsburgh, Upper Freeport, Lower Kittanning, Fire Clay, Pond Creek, and Pocahontas No. 3 coal beds and coal zones. Resources were calculated on all of the coalbeds/zones, with the exception of the Lower Kittanning coal bed. Preliminary original resources are estimated at about 93 billion short tons (84 billion tonnes), of which about 66 billion short tons (60billion tonnes) remain. Much of the remaining coal in all five coal beds/zones is thinner [<3.5 ft (1.07m)] and deeper [>1,000 ft (305 m)] than the coal that has been mined, but economic resources are still available and mining in each coal bed/zones will continue throughout this decade and into the next given current market conditions.

This paper discusses the process utilized by the Kiewit?Bilfiger Berger Joint Venture (Contractor) to select, design, and procure the largest mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever implemented in North America. The mixshield will excavate the 8,534 linear m × 6.7 m ID (28,000 linear ft × 22 ft ID) tunnel for the City of Portland Oregon?s, Bureau of Environmental Services (Owner) East Side CSO Tunnel Project. TBM selection was conducted under a preconstruction contract in which the Contractor, Owner, Construction Management Consultant and Designer collaborated on TBM selection prior to commencement of construction. Amax Coal Industries Inc.&apos;s Delta Mine is a medium-sized. high-sulfur coal producer that has lived up to the challenges posed by nearly six decades of a highly competitive domestic coal market. The mine now faces one of its biggest challenges - the same one staring at the dozens of other high-sulfur producers in the Midwest - the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The 59-year-old mine, located in the coal fields of southern Illinois, has remained one of the state&apos;s oldest continuously operating mines by rolling with the ups and downs of the coal market and by incorporating new technologies and innovative productivity improvements into its operation.

This paper summarizes the main achievements of our previous project entitled "Development of a technological system producing quality guaranteed fly-ash based binder". Furthermore, this study deals with the laboratory experience of lignite fly ash utilization for two different goals. On the one hand the fly ash was tested as a binder; on the other hand it was investigated as an underground mine backfill material. Considering the first goal, the utilization of a mixture of mechanically activated fly ash and lime for producing an independent binding composition has been assessed involving determination of relationship between the degree of activation of fly ash and the strength of the obtained concrete. The results confirmed that this hydraulic binder is suitable for construction of stabilization and capping layers or base layer. Regarding the backfilling application, this paper presents laboratory experiments, their results including settling tests, hydraulic permeability and strength measurements and dense slurry technology related results.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

The National Mining Association’s (NMA)MINExpo International ’96 is shaping up to be the organization’s largest. About 30,000 mining industry business and technical professionals are expected to descend on Las Vegas, NV Sept. 9-12 to take part in the 25 technical sessions and visit the more than 900 exhibitors who will be showing off their products and services. MINExpo will be the largest mining equipment and services exposition in the United States this year. Exhibits at MINExpo will fill the Las Vegas Convention Center, parking lots and part of the Hilton Center, located next door to the convention center. NMA estimates that this year’s show will cover more than 46,450m2 (500,000 sq ft) of exhibit space. Some of the exhibits on display will include haultrucks, hydraulic shovels and excavators, conveyors, continuous miners and tunneling machines. In addition, an array of computer equipment and software will be demonstrated. A new feature this year will be a helicopter pavilion, located in the Hilton Center. Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft have become indispensable to many remote mining operations. NMA said that at least one full-size helicopter will be on display.

A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits, thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. The European industrial minerals industry and its markets are largely self-sufficient. The companies who are members of the Industrial Minerals Association (IMA-Europe) number around 150 contributing 5 billion Euros to the EU?s GDP and range in size from global publicly quoted corporations to small family owned private companies. Their means and capability to implement sustainable development vary considerably. However the leading companies provide an excellent set of best practices, which IMA as a trade association with recognised core competencies in the field of sustainable development is ideally placed to promulgate throughout its membership. As an active participant in the EU Voluntary Scheme for SDI reporting IMA is not only working to increase the level of response to the SDI questionnaire but is also developing with its members a new sustainable development charter which its members will voluntarily adopt as a guiding principle for their implementation of sustainable development This work will be a consultative process involving all IMA?s section members as well as other trade associations, NGOs and MEPs. Public awareness of the benefits of minerals and their contribution to sustainable development has been raised by IMA?s awareness campaign now being followed by a more targeted programme aimed at MEPs. Further work in the future will consider product stewardship and life-cycle analysis. IMA is already positioning itself with the help of its members to assimilate the minerals industry of the accession territories in the sustainable development process.

Agapito Associates (AAI) provides consulting services in geo-engineering, mining engineering and related disciplines. Founded in 1978, the firm operates out of offices in Grand Junction, CO, Golden, CO and Lombard, IL. Members of the staff include mining, civil and geological engineers, physicists, geologists, numerical analysts, computer specialists, instrumentation specialists, plus administration and technical support personnel. AAI has provided consulting and engineering services to mining companies producing base metals, precious metals, coal, potash, trona, limestone, oil shale and salt, and to defense and nuclear-waste disposal industries. AAI also provides services for measuring in situ horizontal stresses using an advanced biaxial overcore stress downhole measurement system developed by Sigra of Australia. Since 1978, AAI has measured in situ stress in copper, oil shale, molybdenum, trona, limestone and coal mines, and in tunnels and concrete structures. Since 1994, the staff has completed 527 overcore stress determinations. AAI has the equipment and personnel for overcoring, sample coring and instrumentation installation in limited access, surface and underground mines. Portable Longyear CP-65 drills, borehole deformation gauges and strain indicators are used for difficult-access overcoring and are permissible for use in gassy mines.

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields&apos; Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.
