The flotation behaviour of phoscorite from the Phosphate Development Corporation was measured in a pilot plant, the flotation cells in the plant being varied in configuration so as to operate with or without circulating loads. The ore was floated in a batch cell so that the parameters for a kinetic model could be estimated, and these parameters were then used in a flotation-plant simulator, which is based on the kinetic model, in the prediction of the performance of a pilot flotation plant operating on phoscorite. The simulator predictions compare well with the measured performance of the ore in the pilot plant, but the comparison shows that the kinetic model is not completely adequate for the prediction of performance in continuous flotation plants. The model is weakest in its ability to model the behaviour of the froth phase. The flotation behaviour of the ore could be adequately described when it was assumed that the apatite and gangue each consist of floatable and unfloatable components. The effect of particle size on the specific flotation-rate constant of apatite was found to have a maximum at 85 µm and to fall to zero at 400 µm that for the gangue had a maximum at 50 µm and was zero at 350 µm.

Scrap printed circuit boards were selectively smelted at 1 200°C to produce a metallic alloy having three phases. These phases were identified as a lead-rich phase, a low tin content alpha bronze phase, and a high tin delta phase. Electrochemical leaching studies on this alloy were done in 1 mol/dm3 sulfuric acid or in 2 mol/dm3 hydrochloric acid (adjusted to an ionic strength of 3 mol/dm3). The lead rich phase was more strongly passivated in sulfate media, and in this medium the high tin content delta bronze was more resistant to corrosion than the lower tin alpha bronze phase. In chloride medium the lead phase and both bronze phases corroded readily, but with current densities about an order of magnitude lower than in sulfate medium (static conditions) for the bronze phases. The high tin delta bronze phase was found to form a passivating layer in sulfate media. A similar layer was not seen in chloride medium. The leaching studies in sulfate medium also showed the existence of an alpha bronze phase of lower tin content in the centres of the alpha phase grains. This phase was quite resistant to leaching in sulfate medium.

In 1999, INCO Limited Mines Research, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, took delivery of a MeycoRobojet Logica Spraymobile, a computerized concrete spraying system. The Spraymobile is a self-contained mobile machine capable of applying spray-on ground support in underground applications. The Logica component of the Robojet is designed to control the operation of the Robojet, as well as scan and map the tunnel geometry prior to the spraying operation. The Robojet can be operated in various modes, from manual to automatic operation. In the automatic mode the computer controls the standoff distance, angle, and motion of the spraying jet. In 2000, INCO Limited, working with Meyco Equipment of Switzerland (a division of MasterBuilders Technologies), detailed a plan to create a tele-operation package for controlling the spraying process from a surface location at INCO's Mines Research Test mine. With the RobojetLogica operating in automatic mode, the operator at the machine becomes a process monitor. Since the Logica system controls the key spraying parameters of nozzle distance and nozzle angle to the sprayed surface, the operator could easily monitor and control the Robojet Logica from aremote location. The benefits of operating underground mobile mining (drills and LHDs)equipment from a surface location has been demonstrated at INCO Limited, however, the abilityto control a ground support operation (shotcrete spraying) from surface has not been attempted until now. This paper will describe the Spraymobile shotcreting system, the development of the tele-operation package for the Robojet Logica, as well as modifications to the original Spraymobile for implementing the tele-remote package on the Robojet Logica at the Mines Research test mine.

In her wonderful book, 'The Guns of August', historian Barbara Tuchman tells us that the French war plan for 1914 was dedicated entirely to an offensive strategy, not a defensive one. Plan 17, as it was called, concentrated everything on a French advance to the Rhine, leaving the French left virtually unguarded. This strategy could only be justified by the fixed belief that the Germans could not deploy sufficient manpower to extend their invasion around through western Belgium and the low provinces; and this in turn was based on the belief that the Germans would never use reserve troops in the front line. Al evidence to the contrary was ignored. But when the war came, the Germans followed Count Von Schlieffen's plan; they did use reserves in the front line and they did come the long way around on the west. The result- as you know-was a protracted war, with fearful consequences for the rest of our century.

The data on heat stroke cases reported during the past five years were examined to determine the influence of age on the incidence of heat stroke. Relating the age distribution of these cases to that of the total number of Bantu mine workers showed clearly that the older men run a significantly higher risk of developing heat stroke than the younger men. Although the number of Bantu over 40 years of age in the industry is less than 10 per cent of the total they nevertheless accounted for 50 per cent of the fatal heat stroke and 25 per cent of the nonfatal heat stroke cases during the period under review. Age must, therefore, be recognised as a causal factor in heat stroke and the worker over 40 years of age should be allocated to work on surface, or in cool areas or to non-strenuous and supervisory tasks in hot areas.

With a number of new mines at the feasibility stage and beyond and with several pellet capacity expansions well underway to reduce sintering activity, Alex Broad looks at the impact of worldwide environmental legislation on the iron ore industry. 'Environmental impact assessment' has become something of a buzz term in the metals and mining industry over the last few years and is sure to be an integral part of any green or brown-field project worldwide by the turn of the century, if it is not already. Given the number of iron ore projects springing up, most notably in deposit-blessed Australia, it is not surprising that the subject of environmental approval has been raising its green head. At the very least the process can slow down a new mine project, or at worst have it deemed unfeasible but in general a government is unlikely to put up unnecessary barriers to a project with the beneficial financial implications of an iron ore deposit.

The usual figures quoted for water usage in South African gold mines are 1 ton of water used per ton of rock broken, which represents a consumption of 4000 litres of water every second. Owing to the limited sources under ground water, the high cost of surface-water supplies, and the environmental problems of effluent disposal, water IS recycled continuously for underground use. This paper reviews the various types of water treatment and why water needs to be treated. The uses of lime and some flocculants are considered, since much of the mine service water requires only simple neutralization and clarification. Where mining depths necessitate the installation of underground refrigeration plant, more stringent water requirements must be met, and where plant performance is to be maintained, the prevention of system scaling and corrosion is necessary. The families of chemicals added to provide such protection are outlined, together with a description of the mechanisms of control.

Optimizing the public gains from the exploitation of mineral resources By Dr A. AZIS and Dr J. ZWARTENDYK Every nation must decide how it should exploit its mineral resources so as to contribute most to its national objectives. It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived.from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit. The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits. Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels. Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to showthe impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues.

AUTHORS' REPLY TO DISCUSSION In his contribution to our paper Dr Lloyd makes two criticisms: The first criticism, as we interpret it, is that the agglomerate flotation process that we described is not really necessary because previously described processes effect almost the same results or could be made to give the same results by including sufficient paraffin in the reagent combination.

The efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the aluminothermic reduction process in the production of ferro-alloys and 'pure' metals depends strongly on appropriate balancing of the process energy required. Insufficient energy results in a poor metal yield, while over-supply can result in excessive fuming and possibly even ejection of the reactor contents in a potentially dangerous 'thermite bomb' reaction. This situation becomes even more critical when the suitability of limited quantities of oxide from new sources must be evaluated, dictating smaller-scale testwork. The resulting higher relative heat losses from the system complicates control of the energy balance, and usually requires the addition of thermal boosters or reactant preheating in order to sustain an autothermic process. This often detracts from the quality of the metal product, and adds to the hazards of batch aluminothermic- reduction testing. The development of a small-scale method (producing less than 2,5 kg of metal) for the plasma-assisted aluminothermic reduction of chromium oxide that overcomes such difficulties is described. The technique involves the use of a sealed 50 kVA plasma-arc furnace to provide controlled electrical ignition and supplementary energy to the reactants contained in a water-cooled copper crucible. The application of the method to the evaluation of the aluminothermic production of pure chromium metal from a unique chromic oxide source is reported.

This volume, which was advertised in the December, 1968, issue of the Journal at a pre-publication price of £4, is edited by W. Ryan of Warren Spring Laboratory and published by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London. It is an up-to-date review of the operations of some 50 or so companies whose activities embrace the extraction and refinement of metals in the United Kingdom. Thirty-four metals are discussed, ranging from aluminium to zirconium and also there are chapters on ferro-alloys, non-ferrous alloys, high purity metals and metalloids, the platinum group metals and the rare earths. The sources of the various metals are given, followed generally by a brief description of the primary recovery process. Thereafter the operations of specific companies that deal in a particular metal are described in some detail. Certain metals such as barium, bismuth, gallium, thallium and zirconium are perforce covered very briefly as their commercial application is limited but in other cases, especially aluminium, copper lead and zinc, fairly detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided. This publication should be of considerable value to students as it presents modern procedures with regard to the refining and uses of the particular metals under review. This information may not be available from text books which in any case tend towards obsolescence. The book should also prove a valuable addition to the bookshelves of practising metallurgists providing, as it does, a schedule of most of the metallurgical companies operating in the United Kingdom. The quality of the paper and binding, the clarity of printing and illustrations and the arrangement of the subject matter are excellent and are subjects for which the editor and publishers are to be commended. VERSLAG- REPORT No. 1365 STUDIES OF INCIPIENT FUSION IN THE SYSTEM CHROMITE- MgO- Al2O3-SiO2-C 5th January, 1972 Investigator: N. A. Barcza SYNOPSIS A fundamental study was made of twelve chromite ores by use of a thermobalance under atmospheric and reducing conditions. It was found that their thermal behaviour under atmospheric conditions can be related to the mineralogical composition of the chromite spinel and the gangue. The overall mechanism of reduction with solid carbon over the temperature range of 1 200 to 1 500°C was shown to be diffusion of carbon through the reaction product. The effects of additions of fluxes and variations in particle size on the kinetics and mechanism of reduction were determined. It was shown that carbon monoxide does not reduce chromite ore up to temperatures of 1 550 °C, and it can therefore be eliminated as the diffusing reducing species. However, the reaction product of reduction, namely a mixed carbide of iron and chromium, was shown to be an effective reducing agent for chromitc ore, while also facilitating the transport of carbon. VERSLAG - REPORT No. 1380 AN ELECTROCHEMICAL MODEL FOR THE LEACHING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE 10th January, 1972 Investigators: C. R. S. Needes, M. J. Nicol SYNOPSIS A correlation between the rate of leaching of UO2 and the electrochemical properties of the oxidant concerned has been derived. This correlation is found to be borne out by experimental results. Certain effects observed in UO2 leaching and hitherto unexplained have been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. Experiments have shown that the mixed potential of a UO2 electrode gives a measure of the rate of dissolution of UO2. Its significance to commercial practice is discussed. CONCLUSIONS (I) The dissolution of UO2 in the presence of a number of oxidants can be explained in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. (2) The mixed potential of the UO2 electrode is a measure of the rate of UO2 leaching. This principle could be used in the control of industrial leaching operations. (3) A simple treatment has provided a mathematical basis for a fundamental correlation between the rate of U02 dissolution and the chemical properties of the oxidants concerned. This relation has been found to agree well with experimental results. (4) A number of phenomena occurring during the leaching of UO2, hitherto not explained in a satisfactory manner, have now been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism.

As you pointed out, furnace power factor (and consequently transformer MVA rating) depends upon the inductive reactance, and so it is desirable to design for the lowest possible value of this parameter. The further introduction on the primary side of the transformer of capacitors, whether in shunt or in series, increases the network power factor but does not alter the furnace power factor; that is, the phase angle between electrode to- hearth voltage and current remains unchanged. Exploration, and other, boreholes are drilled to obtain information about the geological environment. Knowledge of the exact position (dip and direction) of the holes is important to ensure compatibility between the hole and the geological information. Kumba Resources traditionally used mechanical methods to determine the hole characteristics. These are cumbersome and expensive, and as a consequence a new method, the IVEC (Iscor Video Exploration Camera), was developed which utilizes a charged coupled device (CCD) image sensor focused on a three-dimensional compass. This system is rugged, relatively inexpensive and gives real-time results during borehole logging. Keyword: Borehole inclination, deviation, dip and direction, geophysics, exploration.

The work described here is an extension of current theory applied to obtaining the power dissipated at the wavefront of a transverse disturbance traveling along a mine hoisting cable. A previously derived empirical relation is adapted to the present problem, and is solved by use of a Lagrange-type reference frame moving with the wavefront. As a result of tie limitations inherent in the original relation, only a lower-bound for the domain of predicted power losses is defined. A qualitative assessment of conditions leading to the undesirable effects of internal frictional losses at the wavefronts are discussed in terms of the operating environment found on typical mining installations

The production 01material liner than 75 µm in a number of open-circuit mills was investigated. The mils ranged from laboratory rod and ball mils treating a variety 01 ores to large industrial rod mils treating gold and copper ores. It was shown that the dependence on feed rate 01 the production 01 material liner than 751J.1T1 can be accurately described by a simple formula that was derived in previous work. In some 01 the systems reviewed, it proved possible to assess the feed rate 01 ore to the mil at which the rate 01 production 01 material finer than 75 µm can be maximized.
