Volumetric flow and mass flow are two of the critical process parameters needed to understand and control flotation processes, with others being levels, densities, and metal analyses. Both volumetric flow and density measurements can be adversely influenced by entrained air, which will result in artificially high flow readings and artificially low mass flow calculations. Array-based instrumentation has been used successfully to accurately measure both volumetric flow of aerated slurry and the quantity of air entrained within the slurry. The latter measurement has been used to correct density measurements, thus providing an accurate mass flow calculation. A case study involving the use of this technology to measure both flow rates and air entrainment levels at Eland Platinum processing facility (concentrator) will be covered in detail. In addition, with certain traditional flow meters such as electromagnetic meters, erroneous volumetric flow rates can be recorded in the presence of paramagnetic or ferromagnetic material. The use of this array technology to avoid spikes in measurements due to steel fragments passing through the pipe will also be discussed.

S. J. Venning (Member): The authors should be congratulated on producing such concise data from the plethora of experimental report results. Their observations on the cost of liners calls for some comment however, as the really unique feature about liners in South Africa is that they can be obtained so cheaply. Attention has been focussed on the 1961 cost of white iron at R50 per ton for chill cast block liners while manganese steel liners are reported as costing as much as R250 per ton. The former are however, a relatively heavy, simple casting with a low labour content and reasonably high percentage productivity, made from metal melted in a cupola. The capital investment to produce this type of casting is low compared with that required to produce manganese or other alloy steels. The chill cast liner block is always a production item and is cast in a permanent mould. Almost all manganese mill liners, except perhaps small aperture screens, are sold for considerably less than the R250 per ton quoted by the authors. Where a price of this nature is asked it would be because the design of the casting demanded is complicated or leaves little metal to carry the labour and other costs of production. As reference has also been made in the paper to liner costs in America, prices for similar types of liners obtained during a visit to Canada and the U.S.A. in 1961, could be of interest: Material Price per Location short ton Ni-hard R250 Elliot Lake Body liners block type Ni-Hard R300-310 FAS New York Mn Steel R280-290 FAS New York Screens (grids) slotted Cr.Mo. White iron in Canada was then quoted at about R150 per ton, but as Ni-Hard gave a life of at least two to twoand-a-half times that of white iron, it was a much more attractive proposition particularly when relining and down time costs were taken into consideration. There is little doubt that most foundries would welcome clear and complete specifications of the customers requirements and systematic checks to ensure that these specifications are being met. B.S.S. or other accepted standards should form the basis of these, and periodic inspections should be undertaken to ensure that only those foundries capable of complying should be included as suppliers. The authors have referred to new designs, but can the industry really call the grid and plate new when the patents were taken out during the second world war and the sawtooth block has been used for at least 35 years. South Africa’s mining and metals industries have an illustrious history dating back to the Late Iron Age. We live in a complex and data-intensive world that has already fundamentally changed how we work and live. The outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in immeasurable suffering worldwide, but the crisis also accelerated many technological developments and altered the way we think about, and experience, technology and work. Problem-solving requires new and rapidly changing skills to manage the data tsunami. Whether at the rock face or on the processing plant, the fundamentals have not changed, although how we interact with minerals and their properties has changed dramatically. Sustainable processing and design are non-negotiable if we genuinely want to achieve the aim of the cradle-to-cradle principle. As we venture forth, what can scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians learn from history? History is data presented in a context; sometimes, the context is also important. We exist in an age of data, with most of the world’s data created in only the past two years. History can enhance our understanding of the present and enhance our future outcomes. Lessons from history can help provide insights into making ethical and sustainable choices related to technology or engineering in the mining and metallurgical industry. Shifting the perspective of mining and metallurgy professionals from a narrow focus on complex technical solutions towards a broader context for problem-solving and designs that includes the entire ecosystem is crucial. "The smelter at Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, located in Sudbury, Ontario, operates a single electric AC furnace. This furnace treats nickel sulphide concentrates produced by Glencore and third-party feeds and as such its performance is key to the company’s nickel supply chain. Currently the plant has two shutdowns per year in order to carry out significant repairs on matte tap-holes.Improved monitoring systems that enable better prediction of tap-hole wear have been a continued focus. The electric furnace is an essential piece of the smelter flow sheet requiring the need for planned tap-hole maintenance along with robust systems for management according to to this plan.The ability to meet our goal of zero harm is ensuring that safe practices are in place. Detailed procedures and cool-down practices have been implemented to ensure that required matte chemistry and temperature criteria can be met during the period leading into a shutdown for tapblock maintenance.A significant repair of the electric furnace will take place in 2015. During this rebuild, the sidewalls and matte endwall will be replaced. There is work underway to improve wall and matte end performance in an attempt to extend the time between rebuilds. This paper will review the approach taken towards this end."

Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, non-sinusoidal oscillation enhances the ability to control waveform and meets different oscillation requirements by adding an independent parameter, which is the key technology for high-efficiency continuous casting. A new waveform of mould non-sinusoidal oscillation is proposed in this paper, that is, a velocity waveform that is composed only of straight lines and parabolas, which not only has good dynamic characteristics, but also further enhances the feature of non-sinusoidal oscillation. Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, the negative strip time is reduced by 15.9%, the maximum negative strip velocity difference is increased by 38.3%, and the maximum positive strip velocity difference is decreased by 27.8%. The formulas of oscillation process parameters can be clearly deduced, and the isoplethic curves of oscillation process parameters when multi-parameter simultaneously changes are drawn. The negative strip time decreases as the modification ratio, frequency, and casting speed increase, but increases as stroke increases. In order to maintain the stability of negative strip time, an oscillation synchronous control model for optimising oscillation basic parameters was developed. Through practical application, the mean oscillation mark depths decreased by 10.1 μm and the flux consumption is increased from 0.37 kg/t to 0.45 kg/t in the non-sinusoidal oscillation model, which meets the requirements of normal production.

The Soutpansberg Coalfield hosts South Africa's hard coking coal reserves. However, coals in this region are understudied compared to other coalfields in the country. This study characterizes the properties of fine-float fraction samples extracted from a wide diameter borehole core in the Makhado Project, Tshipise sub-basin, Soutpansberg coalfield. Conventional analyses were used to determine the coal quality, petrographic composition, mineralogy, geochemistry (including trace element and rare earth element composition), and free swelling index of samples from six coal horizons and three partings from the economic No.6 Seam. The coal samples are classified as medium rank bituminous C coals (0.88 %RoVmr, 0.92 %Rmax) and are highly vitrinitic in composition (97 vol% mineral matter free (mmf)). The samples show strong caking potential (FSI of 9). The total rare earth concentrations range between 570 and 3193 ppm in the ash samples. Preliminary analysis show all but two samples are promising sources of rare earth elements as the total concentrations exceeded the 1000 ppm cut-off grade. Further research is required to confirm these preliminary findings.

Since 1925, xanthates have been widely used in sulfide flotation due to their low cost, ease of manufacture, and ability to float most value species. However, the industry's increasing need for safer and more selective alternatives, driven by low head grades, poor-quality, difficult-to-process ore with complex mineralogy, and stricter environmental regulations, has led to the development of Solvay's AERO® XR series of collectors. These custom-formulated products are based on greener chemistries and offer metallurgical benefits that are similar to or better than those of xanthates, without the safety concerns. Developed through Solvay's Flotation Matrix (FM) 100 approach, the XR series collectors are suitable for a wide range of applications, including the processing of Cu, Zn, and Cu-Ni, as well as the flotation of precious metals. This paper will highlight the differences between xanthates and XR series collectors, and present case studies of their successful commercial application at various global operations.

Advances in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are transforming mining and mineral processing, and making them more algorithm intensive. The paradigm is shifting from one of detection and control to one of prediction and optimisation. To build up reliable prediction and optimisation models these steps should be passed: collect, aggregate, cleanse, and process large amounts of complex, structured, and unstructured data as a first stage. Next, the right tools must be used to extract meaningful features from the operational data for the build-up of a prediction model. A grinding circuit is one of the challenging areas in terms of determining its overall efficiency and the prediction of product quality. In a processing plant, some of the KPIs are typically unmeasurable or infrequently measured for real-time application, e.g. ore grindability and grind size. However, these variables are required to calculate the grinding circuit efficiency and to model the operation performance. In this paper, advanced analytic tools have been used to extract one selected KPI (cyclone overall P80 or final grind size) and its relationship with measured variables for an industrial dataset. The results illustrate that the performance of the grinding circuit can be predicted for real-time monitoring by means of measured data. I appreciate the honour that has been bestowed upon me by my election as President of this Institute. We are starting what I believe will be a challenging year. The first challenge facing the Institute is financial. From the accounts for you will note that the Institute operated at a loss for the first time since 1987. average membership subscription was increased by only 10 per cent, reflecting desire to keep costs down in the minerals industry. The Institute will therefore to rely on other income to meet its budget requirements and break even financially. source of these funds will be the activities of the Technical Programme Committees. disciplines-Mining, Extraction Metallurgy, and Metals Technology are planning programmes for the coming year. I urge al members to increase their support of colloquia schools. Increased membership would also bring in more funds. Please, therefore, encourage colleagues who are not yet members of the Institute to join it.

In this research, in order to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV)(as vibration indicator) caused by blasting projects in the excavations of the Karoun III power plant and dam, three techniques including statistical, empirical, and neural network were used and their results were interpreted and compared. First, multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) was used as statistical approach. Next, PPV was predicted using some widely used empirical models. Lastly, an artificial neural network was used. In the ANN model, maximum charge per delay, total charge per round, distance from blast site, direction of firing, blasthole length, number of blastholes, total delay in milliseconds, number of delay intervals, and average specific charge were taken into consideration as input parameters and consequently the PPV as output parameter. The results of the techniques were interpreted from two points of view. Firstly, the correlation between the observed data and predicted ones, secondly the total error between observed data and predicted ones. The MVRA had a satisfactory correlation but its error of estimation was comparatively very high. The empirical model had reliable correlation and a small error of estimation; in total the results of empirical method were more reliable than those of MVRA. Generally, the ANN approach showed very high correlation and a very small error. The results of this research indicated that the ANN model is the best predicting model for PPV in comparison with other approaches.

Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of eighteen and the standing committees held forty-six meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of income over expenditure of R5 051 compared with an excess of expenditure over income last year of R4 608. This major reversal of fortunes is due in the first instance, of course, to the increased subscriptions. There were, however, other important contributors, particularly sales of the Proceedings of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and profits on the operation of symposia and colloquia. It would appear from a study of the accounts that there has been a substantial drop in expenditure on secretarial fees. In actual fact, however, our total expenditure on secretarial fees was higher. A portion of this expenditure was charged against the administration of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and, in addition, the charge against the Journal accounts for secretarial fees was increased. It will be recalled that in last year's annual report it was mentioned that subsequent to the new arrangement for publication of the Journal, the expected improvement in the finances of the Journal had been slow in materialising. After a total period of 18 months there was still no sign of improvement and it was accordingly decided to end the arrangement. As a result, the drain on the finances of the Institute was considerably lessened in the second half of the year. During the course of the year Council became concerned about the rapid depletion of our accumulated funds and gave careful and detailed attention to all aspects of the Institute's financial affairs. Particular attention was given to: 1. The fact that the Institute does not have a solid financial backing and must appeal for funds every time any special event such as a symposium is held. 2. The responsibilities of the Institute to the profession and the community, with particular reference to the desirability of establishing Institute bursaries and participating in other educational activities. 3. The rapidly rising cost of living. 4. The immediate financial position of the Institute. 5. The rapidly increasing cost of publishing the Journal due to the increasing number of papers available. In the meantime the immediate financial position of the Institute has improved but as this is due largely to non-recurring or irregular items of revenue, it should not be given undue weight. After careful consideration it was decided that an appeal should be made to industry for financial assistance, which would be used to cover the cost of symposia and other unusual expenditure and also, if possible, to build up the capital resources of the Institute so that there is a solid foundation for the future. Before appealing to industry, Council wished to be quite certain that there could be no criticism of the Institute for not having done our best in a personal capacity. Furthermore, Council examined many comparative statistics, including those circulated to members, which showed that, while expenditure per member has risen at an average annual rate of 7,5% over the last fifteen years, subscription revenue per member has risen at only 3,4% per annum. It was with this background that your Council decided to raise the subscriptions. Initial approaches have been made to the big mining groups and there has been a very generous response, although the details of how financial assistance will be provided have not yet been worked out. It seems likely that some form of affiliated company membership will be the most suitable method of achieving this. When these details have been fixed, it is the intention to extend the appeal to all corners of the mining industry as well as manufacturing and metallurgical industries. It is believed that these measures will ensure that the finances of the Institute are placed on a firm foundation on which the expanding activities can be planned. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R73 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 411. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year fron R6 540 to R9 160. The market value is now almost exactly the same as the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to R23 010 compared with R17 959 a year ago.

Electrowinning is one of the nickel recovery processes from solutions obtained from the leaching of nickel sources. Every year significant amounts of nickel products are used in various industrial processes and daily life, such as catalysts or batteries, which are a valuable source of nickel for recovery. Nickel purity is also very important in the electrowinning process, because the amount of impurities in nickel such as sulphur, if greater than 100 ppm, make it unsuitable for use in catalysts and plating. Because sulfur is intrinsic to the sulphate electrowinning system, we needed to investigate parameters that can affect the quality and purity of nickel. In this regard, experiments were performed in static and circulating electrowinning processes. A monitoring and circulation system was designed and built to measure voltage, current and temperature as well as to circulate the solution in the system at a specified rate. It was then observed that nickel ion concentration, pH, using the circulation system and additives, were factors affecting the purity and quality of nickel, and in the best case the amount of sulphur in nickel was below 100 ppm. Discussion J. de V. Lambrechts (Fellow): The author's paper is a brilliant follow-up of an earlier paper by Starfield and Dickson.1 I have no quarrel with Dr Starfield's computerization of a complex problem, but I do not believe that he is getting quite the right answers from his programme. My impression is that his predictions about wet bulb temperature increases in very deep mines are over optimistic; in other words, that it will be hotter than Dr Starfield predicts. This is putting my views in a nutshell. This is not the occasion on which to indulge in lengthy argument about the original paper by Starfield and Dickson, but the present paper is, after all, based directly on that earlier paper and if the one fails, the other cannot succeed. I did level certain criticisms at the first paper and cannot say that the authors' replies were very convincing. I do not think it is a sin to admit that I belong to the old school which believes in thorough field experimentation and practical trials and no amount of mathematical manipulation or physical theorizing, no matter how excellent, can make up for inadequate practical confirmation. This, as I see it, is still the crux of the matter. The original paper by Starfield and Dickson still rests on somewhat scanty practical evidence and I would be much happier if Dr Starfield's computer programme, based on the Starfield-Dickson model, had been checked against a large mass of observations in the practical mining situation. This is what both Wiles2 and myself3 had tried to do previously. What we lacked in mathematics and/or computer aids, I think the present paper by Dr Starfield lacks in practical substantiation. This is no condemnation of the author's paper which, taken by itself, is excellent but I think the final stage is still lacking, namely the bringing together of theory and empiricism in a manner acceptable to all. This may be wishful thinking on my part but I hope, within the next year or so, to come up with a modified Starfield-Dickson model in such a way that the computer answers will agree in the majority of cases with the few hundred field observations which are already on record. Hemp (Visitor): Dr Starfield's paper has very effectively rounded off one particular aspect of the general problem of heat flow in mines. The ease with which this computer programme can be used to calculate temperature increases in horizontal airways must lead to its wider use in ventilation planning and, in developing this rapid method, Dr Starfield has indeed rendered a valuable service to the mining industry. One could consider further instances of heat flow in airways in which the availability of a rapid computer method would be desirable, e.g. the flow of air down a shaft, where there is an increase in temperature due to adiabatic compression, as well as an increase in virgin rock temperature as the depth increases. However, this particular case would not present any new problems and would merely require an extension of the exisitng work. I should like in this contribution to talk about an aspect of environmental control in mines which, I think, will become more important in the future. It is well known that wet bulb temperatures are subject to fluctuations underground. In some instances, particularly in stopes, the fluctuations, both with time and position, can be considerable. The theoretical work which has been carried out on temperature increases has been aimed at the prediction of mean temperatures, and no account has been taken of fluctuations around this mean. It is questionable whether this approach will, on its own, be sufficient, particularly when temperature increases in stopes are considered. The fluctuations in air temperatures underground arise from two causes. The first of these would be the fluctuations in surface conditions, and here one could list random, diurnal and seasonal fluctuations. The second cause is the multitude of things which vary in a mine and here one could list variations in air flow quantity, sources of evaporation, heat transfer from pump and compressed air columns and, particularly in the stope, variations in air flow patterns. Fluctuations arising from surface temperature variations should be amenable to calculation, and here one envisages figures relating the decay of temperature variation with distance to factors such as air flow quantity. Fluctuations resulting from changes in the mine are perhaps more difficult to tackle theoretically and the best approach could well be to analyse underground observations. In this connection, there is a good case to be made for the increased use of statistical methods in the analysis of underground temperature measurements, and it might be of value to look at current air-conditioning practice.
