Abstract. Study on nonlinear damage localization process of rocks under water chemical corrosion is a more interesting topic in rock mechanics research world widely. It is very important in estimating long term stability of rock engineering, design of nuclear waste repository and its performance estimation, geothermal and petroleum development. This paper reports that new development of study on the topic, including methodology, results of meso-mechanical test, real-time CT scan test and acoustic emission test, temporal fractal behaviors, neural dynamic modeling and chemical-induced damage law, etc. This paper also discusses the research directions of the topic in the near future. Zusammenfassung. Untersuchung zum durch die chemische Corrosion induzierten Schaedigungsprozess ist einer der Trends im Gebiet der Felsmechanik. Sie ist zugleich ein sehr wichtiges Forschungsprojekt u.a. fuer geotechnische Langzeitstabilitaetsanalyse, Langzeitsicherheit eines Endlagers, Erdwaerme- und Erdoelfoerderung. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die neusten Entwicklungen in den folgenden Teilgebieten zusammen: Untersuchungsmethoden, Laborversuchsergebnisse der Mikromechanik, der Computer-Tomographie und der akustischen Emission, zeitabhaengige Fraktaleigenschaften, Modelle fuer die Nervendynamik sowie Modelle fuer chemie-induzierte Schaedigungen. Zum Schluss werden kuenftige Forschungsschwerpunkte bzw. –richtungen diskutiert. Résumé L’étude du processus de la localisation de l’endommagement du à l’érosion chimique est un thème d’actualité pour la mécanique des roches. Elle est également un sujet de recherche d’importance dans l’évaluation de la stabilité à long terme des ouvrages rocheux, l’analyse du system de stockage des déchets nucléaires et l’évaluation de son comportement, l’exploitation de l’énergie thermique et pétrolifère, etc. Cet article présente le développement actuel dans ce domaine, incluant la méthodologie d’étude sur le processus de la localisation de l’endommagement dû à l’érosion chimique, l’analyse des essais mécaniques avec l’observation microscopique, du balayage en temps réel (CT), et de l’émission acoustique. On aborde ainsi modèle des caractéristiques fractural du temps, le modèle de la mécanique dynamique neural, ainsi que la loi de comportement d’endommagement dû à l’effet chimique. Enfin, les perspectives relatives à ces études sont présentées et discutées.

Firstly, genetic algorithm is used to reach the global optimization in planning. Then, evolutionary programming is employed to obtain the partial optimization for each year. This paper presents a modelling tool that can be used to predict the behaviour of solvent extraction processes. In particular, this model allows calculating metal extraction efficiency as a function of pH, solvent flowrate, stripping flowrate and aqueous feed flowrate in the mixers-settlers. Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Mining layout See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a detailed description. Drill rig The drill rig was a combination of a Secoma P-Low LC 10long hole feed and an Axera low profile carrier. The choice of this equipment was made through consultation with Tamrock Sandvik. All relevant design perimeters of the area to be mined were taken into consideration. Production targets

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affect the wellbeing of workers and result in poor quality work, lower work performance and decreased motivation. In contrast to ‘occupational’ diseases where there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between hazard and disease (e.g., asbestos and asbestosis, lead and lead poisoning), ‘work-related’ diseases are multifactorial, where the work environment and the type of work that is performed contribute significantly to musculoskeletal disorders. WMSD is the term used to describe disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves). WMSDs are by definition a work-related phenomenon. The literature shows inarguably that certain jobs and certain work-related factors are associated with a significant risk of contracting a WMSD. It is assumed that repeated movements and postures, static work, continuous loading of the tissue structures or lack of recovery time, trigger or cause a pathological process that then manifests itself as a WMSD. This paper looks at the prevalence of the WMSD condition at three mines in South Africa: a coal, a gold and a platinum mine. Predisposing factors that include work factors, presentation of symptoms and psychological factors will be discussed in the paper.

Falls of ground (FOG) still account for around 35 per cent of all fatalities in underground southern African mines. To help reduce FOG, appropriate support technology needs to be implemented, and a mindset and cultural change are required to make a significant change. Discipline plays a major role and needs attention, whilst appropriate first-world support technology is available to assist in the reduction of injuries and the improvement of productivity. Section 54 mine stoppages due to FOG are costly. Appropriate support should reduce these unnecessary stoppages. Coal mining has adapted leading support technologies over the years. Platinum and chrome mines have shown significant moves towards adopting leading and appropriate support technologies, seeing noteworthy changes in injury statistics for the better. In typical conventional underground mining operations, the use of temporary support components offers some protection to workers while the permanent and generally more elaborate support systems are installed or constructed. Nonetheless, FOG continue and still result in injuries to people. The author wishes to explore the options and practicality of making use of new-generation support products and technology to provide not only safer support operations, but to also enhance productivity at the working faces. This paper will examine the use of appropriate support technology as a means to making the working stope or development end a safer and more productive workplace.

"In mineral resource evaluations, geostatistical methods known as global change of support allow prediction of the theoretical histogram and gradetonnage curves prior to interpolations or simulations of grades. Two methods commonly used by professionals to guide the choice of interpolation parameters and assess results are the discrete Gaussian model (DGM) and the indirect lognormal correction (IndLog). These models rely upon an estimate of the dispersion variance of the blocks, which is derived by numerical integration of the variogram model over a discretized block. Due to difficulties in obtaining well-formed traditional experimental variograms (especially in the presence of outliers and limited clustered data), many professionals prefer to use ‘normalized’ variograms such as correlogram (non-ergodic variogram), pairwise-relative, or variogram of the normal score transform. A series of simulations with different grade distributions and variogram models are used to assess the performances and robustness of the various variogram estimators with respect to the DGM and IndLog global change of support. Our results show that the traditional variogram, the correlogram, and normal score variogram have better performances, compared to pairwise, for both DGM and IndLog. Moreover, DGM provided better results than IndLog for the grade distributions that are not strictly lognormal. These findings provide valuable guides for geostatistics practitioners. IntroductionWhen reporting resource estimates,practitioners are required to follow generalstandards described in the NI43-101 (CIMguidelines), JORC, or SAMREC codes. One cangenerally recognize three main parts directlyrelated to the block model:•,Pre-processing: exploratory data analysis (EDA), domaining, capping, compositing, declustering, variography•,Processing: block size, neighbourhood, interpolation types (linear or nonlinear)•,Post-processing: classification, reporting.Pre-processing aims to simplify and strengthen the processing step. Ideally, domaining, capping. and compositing is aimed at defining a single homogenous population. During the processing phase, a common practice is to use a block size corresponding to the planned selective mining unit (SMU). In most precious metal deposits (gold, notably), the SMU size is frequently smaller than the recommended half data spacing (Journel and Huijbregts 1978), resulting in high estimation variance and either a high degree of smoothing if the regression slope is managed or a high degree of conditional bias if it is not. Most actual resource estimates are made using block sizes between one-quarter to one-sixth of the average data spacing, sometimes even smaller. In addition to the block size, the interpolation choices for the neighbourhood selection and interpolator (e.g. inverse distance (ID) or ordinary kriging) are often based on the Qualified Person’s (the QP) experience and some basic validation plots that often do not consider the conditional bias (e.g. trends or SWATHs plots, which are designed to compare two sets of population using a one-dimensional graph)."

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column was installed as a final cleaner at the Northam Platinum Ltd. UG 2 concentrator in South Africa. It further discusses the improvements achieved after the conversion of a conventional flotation column, utilized as cleaner in the Merensky concentrator, to an external sparger flotation column. Finally, the application of the above knowledge in the design and commissioning of an external sparger flotation column as final cleaner in the furnace slag concentrator, is also discussed. 1. FINAL CLEANER AT THE UG 2 CONCENTRATOR The MF2 designed UG 2 concentrator is processing 75 000 tonnes run of mine ore at a head grade of 4.0 g/t 3PGM+Au and a feed Cr2O3 concentration of 28 %. Since commissioning of the plant in 2001, Cr2O3 in final concentrate amounted to approximately 5 % of the total mass. Although final concentrate produced from the UG 2 concentrator is blended with final concentrate obtained from the Merensky concentrator before smelting, blended Cr2O3 values in excess of 1.6% lead to difficulties in the subsequent smelting process. Several options for reducing the amount of Cr2O3 in final concentrate have been evaluated namely:- ? Differing types of depressants at various dosing rates. This test work did not reduce the amount of Cr2O3 reporting to final concentrate by any significant extent. ? Reduction in mass pull to minimize the entrainment of Cr2O3 in the concentrate stream.. This process change had a detrimental effect on PGM recovery. Conclusions were drawn that conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells could not achieve the required selectivity without sacrificing PGM recovery. As a consequence an alternative mechanism needed to be incorporated for the final cleaning of PGM concentrate.

"Run-of-mine coal contains particles of different sizes with different specific gravities, and when this coal is crushed, the amount of material present in a particular density class changes. This alters the washability characteristics of the coal, which affects the quantity, quality, and separation efficiency of the gravity-based coal washing process. The degree of difficulty in washing a typical coal at a particular specific gravity depends mostly on the amount of material occurring within ±0.1 specific gravity range, which is known as ‘near-gravity material’ at that particular specific gravity of separation. In this paper, two numerical indices, namely ‘near-gravity material index’ and ‘index of washability’, are used to quantify the distribution of near-gravity material in different density classes and to evaluate the degree of difficulty involved in the washing process. The results of this preliminary investigation indicate the uniform distribution of near-gravity material in all density classes for finer size fractions, whereas for coarser size fractions more near-gravity material is present in the lower density classes, making the washing process more difficult at a lower specific gravity of separation. IntroductionThe prime objective of coal beneficiation is to remove physical impurities as effectively and economically as possible. The beneficiation process includes various operations on the asmined coal to make it more suitable for enduse application without destroying the physical identity of the coal. There are several coal beneficiation processes, but gravity-based separators remain the most efficient unit operation for removing the undesirable gangue material from run-of-mine coal. These separators exploit the difference in density between coal particles and gangue particles to effect a separation. The feed is introduced into an aqueous suspension of ultrafine magnetite with a particular density. The feed particles with a relative density less than that of the suspension (clean coal) float to the top surface of the suspension, whereas particles denser than the suspension density (gangue material) sink to the bottom. When the difference in density between the particle and the aqueous suspension is large, the separation is easy, but when this difference is less the separation becomes much more difficult since the settling velocity of the particles is very low. This lower settling velocity increases the probability that particles that should report to floats report to sinks, and vice versa, hence increasing the amount of misplaced material. Therefore, the degree of difficulty in beneficiating a typical coal at a particular specific gravity depends on the amount of material occurring within ±0.1 specific gravity range. This is known as ‘neargravity’ material, also termed ‘near-dense’ material, at that particular specific gravity of separation."

"When considered collectively, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves are arguably a key asset for any mining company. Mineral Reserves are the economically mineable portions of Mineral Resources. They therefore provide a good indication of the economic prospects in the short to medium term and associated non-financial impairments for mining companies, hence a focus on Mineral Reserves. An assessment of modifying factors for converting Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves revealed that Mineral Reserves were most sensitive to long-term commodity prices, hence the focus on long-term commodity prices. The justification for selecting gold and platinum mines is that they collectively make a significant contribution to South Africa’s earnings from mining.The introduction of the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) in 2000 informed the basis for analysing long-term commodity price assumptions for major South African gold and platinum mining companies between 2000 and 2016. The analysis revealed that the least number of non-financial impairments occurred when long-term commodity prices were within ±5% of spot prices. This finding suggests that this range is the ideal range for long-term commodity price assumptions to improve confidence in Mineral Reserve declarations and minimize impairments. Introduction The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) defines a Mineral Resource as ‘a concentration or occurrence of solid material of economic interest in or on the Earth’s crust in such form, grade or quality and quantity that there are reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 18). Mineral Resources are categorized according to increasing levels of geoscientific confidence or knowledge, from Inferred to Indicated and lastly, Measured categories. The SAMREC Code defines a Mineral Reserve as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resource’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 25). In some of the other reporting codes such as the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code), a Mineral Reserve is synonymous with an Ore Reserve. The conversion of Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves involves applying modifying factors, which are non-resource considerations. The modifying factors used in the Mineral Reserve estimation process include mining, metallurgical, processing, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, and governmental factors. Each of these modifying factors consists of several components which require due consideration in the estimation of Mineral Reserves. Table I shows some of the components typically considered for each of the modifying factors."

"SynopsisAlthough women all over the world have been involved in mining activities for centuries, mining has always been considered a very masculine industry due to its heavily male-dominated workforce as well as the physicality of mining work. The mining industry has not been an obvious career choice and preferred place of employment for women; women were mainly employed in administrative and advisory positions. Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from being employed in underground operations in South Africa, but the Mines Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996, removed these restrictions. In addition, new mining legislation (the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, No. 28 of 2002) and the accompanying Mining Charter make specific provisions for the inclusion of women in core mining activities and require 10% of core positions to be filled by women.This article voices perceptions of the physical ability of women employed in core mining positions. Findings are drawn from empirical work undertaken at platinum, phosphate, and copper mines. Quantitative and qualitative research paradigms are used. It is evident that women find it extremely difficult to perform mine work that requires physical strength and stamina. Practical recommendations, informed by the literature review and empirical findings, are made with the objective of contributing to the sustainable deployment of women in the mining industry.IntroductionFor many years, mining has been considered the foundation of the South African economy. Although the mining industry in South Africa is currently under considerable pressure and experiences various challenges, including escalating operational costs, electricity tariff increases, safety-related issues and associated production stoppages, poor productivity, labour unrest, and reduced demand both globally and domestically, it remains a key contributor to the national economy and development of the country (IDC, 2013, p. 9).Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from meaningful participation in the mining industry and were denied access to skills and jobs, self-employment, and entrepreneurship. The newly elected democratic government in 1994 initiated substantial socio-political and economic transformation in South Africa. Nearly every sector in the country was transformed and re-shaped, primarily through sector-specific legislation, but also through negotiations between government, industry, and labour unions to create and refine the so-called sector charters, which included the Mining Charter. The vision of the new regime, the African National Congress (ANC), was to ‘transfer power to the people and transform society into a non-racial, non-sexist, united, democratic one, and change the manner in which wealth is shared, in order to benefit all the people’ (ANC, 2007)."

Artisanal and small-scale miners in Nigeria struggle to attract formal financing to upgrade their operations to a more sustainable form of small-scale mining operation. Literature shows that for an investment to attract formal sources of financing; the business must be considered creditworthy by potential lenders. This means that the credit risks associated with the investment must be bearable for the potential lender. This study looks at how artisanal and small-scale miners can attract formal funding, which will help them take the leap from artisanal state to a form of sustainable small-scale mining operation. This study evaluates the creditworthiness of artisanal and small-scale mining operators using key credit risk parameters identified in the literature and through primary investigation. A quantitative study is conducted on a sample of 100 artisanal and small-scale miner establishments in Nigeria to evaluate the effect of these identified credit risk parameters on creditworthiness. It is shown in this study that being a member of a mining cooperative society, which is a form of social collateral, best improves the chances of access to formal financing for miners within the sample group. This underpins the role of social collateral, in both the formal and informal economy, and its influence in improving the creditworthiness of a typical artisanal and small-scale miner.

SAMREC (The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves) Clause 7 notes that ‘Documentation detailing Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves from which a Public Report is prepared must be prepared by, or under the direction of, and signed by a Competent Person.’ Similar statements with respect to Competent Valuators (CVs) and Qualified Reserves Evaluators (QREs) are contained in the SAMVAL (South African Code for the Reporting of Mineral Asset Valuations) and SAMOG (South African Code for the Reporting of Oil & Gas Resources) codes respectively. What does it mean to be a Competent Person (CP) in the context of compiling/signing-off on SAMCODE (South African Mineral Code) compliant documents? What do the registration and experience requirements mean? Who is ultimately responsible for the report and what does such responsibility prescribe?

High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

In extracting base metals from ore bodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environmental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur is emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coal mines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Pyroserv has developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful byproduct of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulfate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

Copper smelter dust (CSD) is a byproduct of copper smelting and is composed of considerable amounts of copper values and also contaminants (like silica and mullite). Silica in CSD forms Siloxane, a low density material, which is difficult to separate from the aqueous phase during solvent extraction. The need therefore arises to reduce/remove the aluminosilicates for better grade and recovery of copper in subsequent processes. This paper reports the use of two types of centrifugal gravity concentrators, namely Knelson (KGC) and Falcon (FGC), for upgrade of copper in CSD. The aim was achieved by an initial characterisation (Particle Size Distribution (PSD) and mineralogical analysis), together with Density Separation (DS) experimentation, premised on a hypothetical density difference between copper oxide and silicon/aluminum oxide. Wet screening results showed that 88.52 % of CSD particles were in -53 μm fraction. Further PSD study using laser diffraction showed the -53 μm fraction to be composed mainly of 26 μm, 22 μm and 18.5 μm fractions. Mineralogical analysis showed copper to occur mainly as oxides (24.34 wt%), but also as sulphides (7.95 wt%), and a substantial amount of aluminosilicates (42.97 wt%) were identified. Density of CSD was determined as 2.83 g/cm3. Copper content (18.02 wt%) in CSD was upgraded to 35.94 wt% in concentrate using KGC. In conclusion, the results showed good convergence between hypothesis and experiment. Additionally, it was also concluded that KGC performed better than FGC for copper upgrade in CSD. "After detonation of the explosive, the final blast-induced damage area around the blast-hole falls into three categories, namely crushed zone, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone. This paper presents a modified model to calculate the size of crushed zone around a blast-hole in drill-and-blast, with the hoop compressive stress and cavity expansion effect taken into account. The material in the crushed zone was assumed to be a granular medium without cohesion, but with internal friction. On this basis, the formula for crushing zone radius was derived. The proposed approach was verified with tests reported in the literature and the simulated results from SPH-FEM coupled models. A full statistical analysis was also carried out, and the predicted values were found to be in better agreement with the test results compared with other models. A sensitivity analysis of the modified model showed that the size of the blast-induced damage area is mainly affected by the following factors: rock mass properties, in situ stress, and borehole pressure. In particular, the roles of borehole pressure and in situ stress are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made on how the size of the crushing zones can be decreased. IntroductionOver the past decades, drill-and-blast has become the most commonly used technology in rock excavation. It is well known that in rock mass fragmentation with explosives, the annular rocks around the blast-hole are converted into fines. The formation of these fines consumes a significant part of the energy of the detonation, which in general is ignored in the determination of the efficiency of detonation (Glatolenkov and Ivanov, 1992; Furtney et al., 2012). Many studies show that only 20–30% of the total explosive energy is effectively used in fragmenting the rock, and up to 50% of the energy generated by conventional charges is wasted in overcrushing of the crushed zone and the inner part of the fractured zone (Ouchterlony et al., 2004; Sanchidrian et al., 2007). How to control the crushed zone to enhance the effective utilization of explosive energy, reducing the unit explosive consumption and the engineering cost, is therefore of great significance."
