Impermeable geologic faults in the coal seam can cause intermittent production problems or can cause unexpected amounts of water or gas to issue from degasification boreholes. These faults also can impact methane emissions into the mine workings, especially if they hinder proper and effective degasification of the coal bed. They may also act as barriers for methane flow in the coal seam. Although this might seem beneficial for advancing mine workings, faulting may also cause gas pressure buildups and result in compartmentalization of the gassy regions from which large quantities of water and methane may rush into mine workings. This study uses reservoir simulations to illustrate the effects of impermeable faults, with and without throws, on the production performance of vertical and horizontal degasification boreholes. These boreholes were drilled from the surface to intercept the coal layer and fault and were assumed to produce methane two years prior to mining of the coal seam. Longwall advances and face position related emissions and reservoir properties were characterized using sector definitions along the path of the panel grids. This work numerically evaluates water and gas productions of each borehole and presents the effects and the impacts of impermeable faults on methane emissions due to an advancing coal face. The results can be used to understand the effects of impermeable faults on borehole productions and face emissions due to these coal seam anomalies.

As part of a program to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the diffusion coefficients for ferric ions in synthetic copper leach solutions. Determination of ferric ion diffusion coefficients in typical dump leach solutions is necessary for predicting leaching rates of copper from large-scale leaching operations and for optimizing concentrations of ferric iron in solutions to maximize leaching efficiency. Derivative chronopotentiometry, an electroanalytical technique, was used to determine ferric ion diffusion coefficients. The diffusion coefficient decreased dramatically with increasing concentration of iron in solution. An empirical model was used to relate the ferric ion diffusion coefficient to the total amount of sulfate in solution. Measuring the diffusion coefficient dependence on temperature yielded an activation energy of 5.5 kcal/mole of ferric ion. Activity coefficients of ferric ions as a function of concentration were calculated from diffusion coefficient data.

This report describes a project in which Development of a Supervisory and Management Training Program for the Underground Coal Mining Industry was developed and evaluated. The project was carried out in two phases. The first phase was a research effort to develop specifications for the program. The second phase was a development and evaluation effort. In the second phase, training programs for first-line supervisors (section foremen) and for middle managers (mine/shift foremen and mine superintendents) were prepared in accordance with the specifications and evaluated by members of the industry. This report describes the project and presents the conclusions drawn there from.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for removing excess iron from representative samples of bauxite ore from the Quapaw deposit of American Cyanamid Co., Saline County, Ark., in order to produce a beneficiated ore suitable for use in the alum industry, At the request of the sponsoring company, the samples were reduction-roasted at 800° C. and then magnetically separated. Although some rejection of iron was effected under these conditions, the general results were not satisfactory, A much more successful procedure, from the standpoints of both rejection of iron and recovery of alumina, consisted of a short (l5-minute), low-temperature (400° C.) oxidizing roast, followed by a 2-minute interval in a hydrogen atmosphere, then cooling to room temperature, and, finally, high-intensity magnetic separation to remove the iron.

An improved maximum-bubble-pressure system using the Sugden twin-capillary method for measuring the surface tension and density of molten metals is described. Improvements include (1) internally ground capillary tips, (2) electronic pressure transducers, (3) micrometer adjustment of immersion depth for density measurements, (4) valuing arrangements to allow operation at other than atmospheric pressure, (5) temperature range to 1,100° C, and (6) recorder readout of pressures. Data for surface tension of mercury from 20° to 300° C are given.

Provide a lighter, smaller apparatus for more gently supporting electrical cable as it is raised or lowered in a well as compared with the conventional method of using a winch and pulley. Approach The conventional method of running cable into a well is to use a winch to pull the cable over a pulley located at the end of a boom placed over the well. This has the disadvantages of being bulky and of placing a concentrated strain on the cable at the point where it moves over the pulley. These disadvantages are overcome by using a "Chinese finger" cable grip assembly to hold and release a multiple conductor cable.

Exports of agricultural products, mostly coffee, continued to account for more than 90% of Burundi's foreign exchange revenue. The country's ban on commercial mining was lifted in 1987. Mining of peat for fuel, limestone for agriculture, and clay for insecticides continued as in previous years. At yearend, Burundi's external debt stood at almost $700 million.2 Amoco Burundi, a subsidiary of the Amoco Petroleum Co., drilled two exploration wells in northern Lake Tanganyika in 1987. No oil was found, but preliminary findings were encouraging enough that further seismic surveys and offshore and onshore drilling exploration were planned in 1988. Any oil or gas finds would have substantial impact on the Burundian economy because a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports. The Zaire Government agreed in June to let Amoco Burundi explore Zaire's side of Tanganyika using the same equipment and personnel being used in Burundi.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers measured threshold igniting powers as a function of beam diameter for butane and propane-air mixtures by laser-heating targets placed on optical fiber tips using a 1064 nm laser. The minimum igniting powers for propane-air and butane-air were about 250 and 300 mW, respectively. Threshold igniting powers for propane-air were approximately proportional to beam diameter for beam diameters from 0.1 to 2.0 mm. Results suggest that relatively powerful beams may be used in these atmospheres without causing ignition, provided the beam diameter is controlled. Threshold ignition delay times using 91125 and 62.51 125 pm fibers were approximately proportional to the inverse square of the laser power. Ignition delays were about 45 ms or longer for laser powers up to 800 mW. Preproduction samples of a commercial optical fuse prevented ignitions under selected test conditions. The Bureau of Mines used regression analysis and applied statistical methods in an effort to rationalize the results of an experiment examining the effects of certain variables on carbon deposition in a reservoir for thermal recovery of petroleum. Although none of the 15 trials of the original experiment resulted in the response of weight-percent of carbon regarded by the experimenter as adequate, values calculated using canonical analysis in two trials yielded responses 33 and 54 percent higher than the minimum acceptable figure. The actual responses differed by less than 3 and 6 percent, respectively, from the predicted responses. Methods are described for defining a path of increasing response based on the minimum point and the response surfaces and for defining a set of values for the parameters in question, which result in increased response, A detailed explanation of the mathematical process used in this analysis is presented in the appendix for ease in computer programing the technique.

An ideal fire warning alarm system for underground mines would be low cost, convenient, fast, reliable, and able to warn all underground workers. Present warning systems, such as phones, messengers, and stench, fail one or more of these criteria. The U.S. Bureau of Mines may have devised the ideal system. The one way communication system employs a large loop antenna and transmitter to create a 630 hertz (Hz) electromagnetic field to send information through-the-earth to cap lamp battery mounted micro- receivers worn by underground miners. Field tests of prototype equipment in 1986 resulted in through-the- rock signal transmission of over 762 m (2500 ft). Subsequent hardware upgrades for more recent tests resulted in transmissions of over one mile. Recently developed receiver circuitry employs phase- locked-loop detection circuitry responsive only to a specific series of pulses of given time duration, that eliminates false alarms from electromagnetic noise emitted by mine equipment, power lines, or lightning. The cross-measure borehole technique has been shown by the Bureau of Mines to be an effective method of controlling methane liberated by fracturing the roof strata in longwall gobs where overburden is less than 750 ft (229 m). Boreholes are drilled into roof strata before mining operations affect the roof strata. Longwall mining fractures the roof strata and releases methane from source beds. Surface exhausters or vacuum pumps are used to draw the gas to the surface through an underground pipeline and vertical exhaust hole. The captured methane is thus prevented from entering the mine's ventilation system. About 71 pct of the methane produced by longwall mining in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed was captured by the cross-measure boreholes. Borehole spacing is an important factor affecting the performance of the technique. Interference tests and measurements of methane flows in return air indicate borehole spacing in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed should be limited to about 200 ft (61 m) except on the first 600 ft (183 m) of the longwall, where spacing should be reduced to about 100 ft (30 m) to capture the large quantities of methane released when the first large roof fall occurs. Comparisons between measured and calculated gas pressure differentials on boreholes indicate borehole length can be reduced from 280 to 140 ft (85 to 43 m), which reduces drilling costs significantly. Additional experimentation is necessary to verify the calculations.

Improve the efficiency of stainless steel pickling (chemically cleaning) operations by providing the industry a quick and convenient method to estimate pickling solution behavior and to estimate recommended ranges of nitric and hydrofluoric acid concentrations for effective pickling of stainless steels. Background Iron, chromium, and nickel in stainless steels react with nitric and hydrofluoric acids during pickling. Ions of these dissolved metals complex or combine with the acid anions. When the total metal concentration reaches about, 50 grams per liter of pickling solution, the solution no longer serves its purpose and is considered spent. Knowledge of cation and anion species in these pickling solutions contributes an insight into pickling chemistry and allows estimates to be made of the most effective ranges of acid concentrations. The Bureau developed a computational model of the complex equilibrium chemistry occurring among iron, chromium, and nickel and the pickling solution. Total concentrations, in grams per liter, of nitrate, fluoride, iron, chromium, and nickel were used as input; output was 17 cation and anion molar concentrations. The model, in the form (if an equilibrium program on a mainframe computer, was used extensively to facilitate Bureau research by determining chemical complexes in numerous stainless steel pickling solutions. However, the program's availability to members of the stainless steel industry, its intended users, was limited because of lack of mainframe compatibility and the difficulty of program maintenance.

Provide sound battery safety guidelines for mine workers who maintain mobile surface mining equipment. Approach Battery-related accidents account for about 5 percent of all nonfatal disabling injuries in coal and metal nonmetal surface mines. These accidents occur despite the fact that appropriate battery safety technology (maintenance-free batteries, cable removers, fault detectors, hot-jumping systems, etc.) exists. Mine operators are not always aware of the safety measures that could be taken because this safety information is widely scattered in numerous unrelated technical reports, vendor brochures, and journal articles. A literature search of these reports and a review of relevant industry standards, handbooks, and references on battery safety, followed by discussions with mining company and MSHA personnel, provided the Bureau of Mines with the background necessary to develop procedures for proper and safe battery usage. These procedures were condensed and written in nontechnical language to serve as guidelines in assuring battery safety during maintenance of mining equipment.

A package of bench design programs is being publicly released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). These programs are designed to provide a probabilistic estimate of the likelihood that various widths of catch bench will be retained. Program modules address the mechanisms of plane, plane step path, and wedge failure. Results are drawn from statistical and geostatistical descriptions of fracture characteristics and other input parameters, and reported as the statistical chance that a given width of catch bench will survive, that is, that a catch bench will remain wide enough to catch rolling and sliding material and prevent such material from posing hazards to miners operating below. The capabilities and application of this software are demonstrated through a case example. Comparing bench width estimates obtained using geologic data with actual widths is a key step in verifying that a program is appropriate for particular site conditions and that proper statistical descriptions of fracture parameters for that site have been developed. Such verification efforts improve confidence, and hence usefulness, of this method for designing future slope benches. Development and release of these programs appears particularly timely given recent progress in photoanalysis methods, which promise to greatly reduce the cost of collecting fracture data.

Improve safety at mineral operations that use cyanide leach solutions to recover precious metals from finely ground ores, Approach Provide an alternative, non-acidic means of cleaning processing systems such as the State-of-Maine filter system, thereby reducing the exposure of workers to toxic hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), The Problem Many gold and silver mining operations use cyanide solutions to dissolve gold and silver from ores. The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. 1. INTRODUCTION Underground mining in the USA has undergone significant change in the past 20 years. Two key elements have been increased mechanization and a more educated work force in spite of these changes, many jobs continue to be labor-intensive and repetitive in nature. They entail tasks that, performed over time, can take a toll on the soft tissues and joints. The problem may be compounded by an aging mining workforce. In 1996 the mean age of the coal mining work force was 45 years and the median total years of experience was 20 (NMA 1998). As a person ages, the body resilience to chronic wear and. tear is reduced, which may cause a worker to pay an increasingly higher health price for performing the same task. Mining companies, like many others, are becoming more aware of cumulative effects to the worker as reports of these types of injuries rise. . Conducting a job analysis is an important step when considering a job redesign or modification to reduce worker cumulative trauma exposure. A basic approach to job analysis is to examine the types of aches and pains reported, the tasks performed, and work site conditions. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted an evaluation of roof-bolting tasks performed at an underground coal mine concerned about early warning signs of cumulative trauma. This evaluation will comprise the primary focus of this chapter. The approach used for the roof-bolting race study may be applicable to other work environments. 2. FUNDAMENTALS OF CUMULATIVE TRAUMA EXPOSURE Musculoskeletal injury is a term used to describe a wide range of soft tissue disorders that affect the nerves, tendons and muscles. Common examples include lower back pain, tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. The majority of these injuries are not the result of sudden mishaps, but usually develop gradually from repeated wear and tear. Symptoms may not appear immediately, but can take weeks, months or even years. Symptoms may result from many types of activities, performed at work or at home, and it is often difficult to attribute there to a single event. In fact, it is more common to identify factors that may have contributed to the development of the condition. The terms repetitive strain injuries or cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) have been commonly used to refer to disorders that have occurred due to work-related activities. Three main risk factors contribute to CTD: force, repetition and awkward postures. Any one or combination of these may contribute to the development of CTD. Therefore, the design of equipment in conjunction with the required tasks should be evaluated when attempting to reduce these risk factors. Examining the layout of the work area to help identify tasks which may contribute to cumulative trauma is necessary. The following list (Putz-Anderson 1988), describes ergonomics concerns that, overall, should be minimized at the work area: • Crowding or cramping the worker: a work area layout may unnecessarily constrain movements of the worker. • Twisting or turning: placement of tools and materials may require the worker to twist the spine to fulfill the requirements of the job. • Repeated reaching motions: the layout of the work area may require the worker to lean to reach and grasp the necessary tools and controls. • Misalignment of body parts: the arrangement of the work area may require the worker to frequently have one shoulder higher than the other or have the neck or spine bent to one side. While many of these concerns are a function of equipment design and environmental conditions, making workers aware of these issues may help them to adapt their work habits to reduce risk of injury. Additionally, this information is useful when conducting an ergonomic evaluation of a work area and associated tasks. 3. UNDERGROUND MINING ENVIRONMENT The underground mining environment is a unique challenge. It is more difficult to develop controls for an underground mine site as compared with a factory setting where equipment and facilities can be more easily designed to reduce worker force, posture and repetitive exposures. In an underground mine, workers are required to perform labor-intensive tasks that often cannot be avoided due to environment constraints. The dynamic nature of the environment does not allow easy implementation of mechanical assists to reduce force exposure. Many of the tasks performed by workers are repetitive. Restrictive work areas due to low ceiling height, low lighting levels and large pieces of equipment cause workers to perform these tasks in postures that are not desirable. Designers of underground mining equipment can control how a machine will function, but not the environment in which it will be used, Hazards in an underground mine cannot be completely removed by redesigning the system. There are many hazards and information sources that must be continually monitored by workers including their position in relation to large pieces of mobile equipment and unpredictable geological anomalies. Thus, immediate dangers may take priority over awareness of ergonomic considerations while performing a job. 4. CASE STUDY OF UNDERGROUND ROOF BOLTING 4.1. Roof Bolting and Cumulative Trauma Exposure In an underground coalmine, after an area is mined it is necessary to support the roof to keep it from collapsing. Since 1950, the primary method for supporting the mine roof has been installation of roof bolts. Long bolts installed into the roof compress the layers of strata achieving a uniformly distributed support anchorage. Roof bolts, typically 6-8 feet long, are installed by workers using large roof-bolting machines. There are different types of machines

Identify specific sources and the relative levels of contribution of various components of longwall shearer operations to the total airborne respirable dust generated during mining. Approach A research investigation was conducted in two phases by the Bureau of Mines at five mine sites to identify specific dust sources and their relative importance during long-wall shearing operations. During phase I of the project the specific longwall mining elements identified for evaluation were: cutting, sumping, tramming, conveying, and moving roof supports. During phase II of the project, two dust sources were evaluated: clearance ring cutters cutting in six-inch web width increments, and loading operations. Investigation Results As a result of dust measurements, the gage cutters were determined to be the major dust-generating source on the shearer. These cutters, at 6-inch web depth, produce three times as much dust per unit volume as is produced at 30 inches full web depth. The following list of averaged values for the mines tested shows that shearer cutting generated averaged dust levels four times as high as those generated by conveying, and approximately five times as high as those generated in moving roof supports.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated that building bricks can be produced by the steam-curing process from various types of industrial mineral wastes. Wastes, utilized to produce bricks, consisted of copper mill tailings, roofing granule fines, asbestos fines, and zinc mill tailings. Bonding of the wastes with either Ca(OH)2 or portland cement resulted in building bricks that met ASTM specification C73-67 for grade SW and MW bricks when evaluated in accordance with ASTM designation C67-66 on sampling and testing of brick. An economic evaluation of the process indicates the total operating cost per 1,000 bricks is about $36.

Native asphalt was produced in 1980 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output decreased 22% in 1980 to 1.25 million tons while value decreased 2% to $25.0 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert, Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

There?s no denying that mining is a male-dominated industry. Yet thanks to technologies developed over the last 20 years, societal changes in sex role stereotyping, individual determi­nation, and the willingness of companies to train women, there are no jobs in mining today where women are not represented. Women are drillers and electricians as well as drivers of heavy equipment and haulpack trucks. They perform jobs ranging from field exploration and metallurgy to clerical and janitorial and warehousing positions, from prospectors and underground blasters to geologists and land reclamation experts, from communicators to legal experts on mining law and more. The Women?s Mining Coalition, founded in 1994 to shepherd responsible legislative mining reform, estimates that 20 percent of the workers in the mining industry are women. Although women are concentrated in clerical and adminis­trative jobs, at least 10 percent are in non-traditional, hardhat jobs, claims the group. There are women in management, but the numbers in senior management remain small, especially in larger companies.
